Ezekiel 37

English Standard Version

from Crossway
1 The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley;[1] it was full of bones. (Eze 1:3; Eze 3:12)2 And he led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry.3 And he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” And I answered, “O Lord God, you know.” (De 32:39; Eze 2:1; Joh 5:21; 1Co 15:35)4 Then he said to me, “Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. (Eze 6:2; Joh 5:28)5 Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath[2] to enter you, and you shall live. (Ge 2:7)6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.” (Eze 6:7; Eze 37:8)7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling,[3] and the bones came together, bone to its bone. (1Ki 19:11; Eze 12:7; Eze 24:18)8 And I looked, and behold, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them. (Eze 37:5)9 Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” (Eze 37:3; Eze 37:4; Da 7:2; Da 11:4; Re 7:1)10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army. (Eze 37:7; Re 11:11)11 Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are indeed cut off.’ (Isa 49:14; La 3:54; Eze 33:10; Eze 37:3)12 Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. (Isa 26:19; Eze 36:24; Eze 37:4; Eze 37:21; Eze 37:25; Ho 13:14)13 And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. (Eze 6:7)14 And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the Lord.” (Eze 17:24; Eze 36:27)15 The word of the Lord came to me:16 “Son of man, take a stick[4] and write on it, ‘For Judah, and the people of Israel associated with him’; then take another stick and write on it, ‘For Joseph (the stick of Ephraim) and all the house of Israel associated with him.’ (Ge 48:13; Ge 48:19; Nu 17:2; 2Ch 11:12; 2Ch 11:16; 2Ch 15:9; 2Ch 30:11; 2Ch 30:18; Eze 2:1; Ho 5:3; Ho 5:5; Zec 10:6)17 And join them one to another into one stick, that they may become one in your hand. (Isa 11:13; Eze 35:10; Eze 37:22; Eze 37:24)18 And when your people say to you, ‘Will you not tell us what you mean by these?’ (Eze 12:9; Eze 33:2)19 say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I am about to take the stick of Joseph (that is in the hand of Ephraim) and the tribes of Israel associated with him. And I will join with it the stick of Judah,[5] and make them one stick, that they may be one in my hand. (Eze 37:16; Eze 37:17)20 When the sticks on which you write are in your hand before their eyes, (Eze 12:3)21 then say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will take the people of Israel from the nations among which they have gone, and will gather them from all around, and bring them to their own land. (Eze 11:17; Eze 36:24; Eze 37:25)22 And I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. And one king shall be king over them all, and they shall be no longer two nations, and no longer divided into two kingdoms. (Jer 50:4; Eze 6:2; Eze 34:24; Eze 35:10; Eze 37:17; Eze 37:24)23 They shall not defile themselves anymore with their idols and their detestable things, or with any of their transgressions. But I will save them from all the backslidings[6] in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them; and they shall be my people, and I will be their God. (Ex 29:45; Le 26:12; Eze 14:11; Eze 34:24; Eze 34:30; Eze 36:25; Eze 36:29; 2Co 6:16; Re 21:3)24 “My servant David shall be king over them, and they shall all have one shepherd. They shall walk in my rules and be careful to obey my statutes. (Jer 23:5; Eze 34:23; Eze 36:27; Eze 37:22)25 They shall dwell in the land that I gave to my servant Jacob, where your fathers lived. They and their children and their children’s children shall dwell there forever, and David my servant shall be their prince forever. (Isa 60:21; Eze 28:25; Joe 3:20; Am 9:15; Joh 12:34)26 I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set them in their land[7] and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in their midst forevermore. (Isa 55:3; Eze 11:16; Eze 34:25; Eze 36:10; Eze 37:28; Eze 43:7)27 My dwelling place shall be with them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. (Le 26:11; Eze 37:23; Re 21:3)28 Then the nations will know that I am the Lord who sanctifies Israel, when my sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.” (Eze 20:12; Eze 36:23; Eze 37:26)

1 The hand of the Lord was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones.2 He led me to and fro among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry.3 He asked me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’ I said, ‘Sovereign Lord, you alone know.’4 Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones and say to them, “Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!5 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath[1] enter you, and you will come to life.6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.” ’7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone.8 I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.9 Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.” ’10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet – a vast army.11 Then he said to me: ‘Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, “Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.”12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.13 Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves and bring you up from them.14 I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.” ’15 The word of the Lord came to me:16 ‘Son of man, take a stick of wood and write on it, “Belonging to Judah and the Israelites associated with him.” Then take another stick of wood, and write on it, “Belonging to Joseph (that is, to Ephraim) and all the Israelites associated with him.”17 Join them together into one stick so that they will become one in your hand.18 ‘When your people ask you, “Won’t you tell us what you mean by this?”19 say to them, “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to take the stick of Joseph – which is in Ephraim’s hand – and of the Israelite tribes associated with him, and join it to Judah’s stick. I will make them into a single stick of wood, and they will become one in my hand.”20 Hold before their eyes the sticks you have written on21 and say to them, “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land.22 I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. There will be one king over all of them and they will never again be two nations or be divided into two kingdoms.23 They will no longer defile themselves with their idols and vile images or with any of their offences, for I will save them from all their sinful backsliding,[2] and I will cleanse them. They will be my people, and I will be their God.24 ‘ “My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd. They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees.25 They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your ancestors lived. They and their children and their children’s children will live there for ever, and David my servant will be their prince for ever.26 I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant. I will establish them and increase their numbers, and I will put my sanctuary among them for ever.27 My dwelling-place will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.28 Then the nations will know that I the Lord make Israel holy, when my sanctuary is among them for ever.” ’

New International Reader’s Version

from Biblica
1 The power of the LORD came on me. His Spirit brought me away from my home. He put me down in the middle of a valley. It was full of bones.2 He led me to and fro among them. I saw a huge number of bones in the valley. The bones were very dry.3 The LORD asked me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’ I said, ‘LORD and King, you are the only one who knows.’4 Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones. Tell them, “Dry bones, listen to the LORD’s message.5 The LORD and King speaks to you. He says, ‘I will put breath in you. Then you will come to life again.6 I will attach tendons to you. I will put flesh on you. I will cover you with skin. So I will put breath in you. And you will come to life again. Then you will know that I am the LORD.’ ” ’7 So I prophesied just as the LORD commanded me to. As I was prophesying, I heard a noise. It was a rattling sound. The bones came together. One bone connected itself to another.8 I saw tendons and flesh appear on them. Skin covered them. But there was no breath in them.9 Then the LORD said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath. Prophesy, son of man. Tell it, “The LORD and King says, ‘Breath, come from all four directions. Go into these people who have been killed. Then they can live.’ ” ’10 So I prophesied just as he commanded me to. And breath entered them. Then they came to life again. They stood up on their feet. They were like a huge army.11 Then the LORD said to me, ‘Son of man, these bones stand for all the people of Israel. The people say, “Our bones are dried up. We’ve lost all hope. We are destroyed.”12 So prophesy. Tell them, “The LORD and King says, ‘My people, I am going to open up your graves. I am going to bring you out of them. I will take you back to the land of Israel.13 So I will open up your graves and bring you out of them. Then you will know that I am the LORD. You are my people.14 I will put my Spirit in you. And you will live again. I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I have spoken. I have done it,’ announces the LORD.” ’15 A message from the LORD came to me. The LORD said,16 ‘Son of man, get a stick of wood. Write on it, “Belonging to the tribe of Judah and the Israelites who are connected with it.” Then get another stick. Write on it, “Ephraim’s stick. Belonging to the tribes of Joseph and all the Israelites connected with them.”17 Join them together into one stick in your hand.18 ‘Your people will ask you, “What do you mean by this?”19 Tell them, “The LORD and King says, ‘I am going to get the stick of Joseph and the Israelites connected with it. That stick is in Ephraim’s hand. I am going to join it to Judah’s stick. I will make them a single stick of wood in my hand.’ ”20 Show them the sticks you wrote on.21 Tell them, “The LORD and King says, ‘I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them together from all around. I will bring them back to their own land.22 There I will make them one nation. They will live on the mountains of Israel. All of them will have one king. They will never be two nations again. They will never again be separated into two kingdoms.23 They will no longer make themselves “unclean” by worshipping any of their evil gods. They will not do wrong things anymore. They always turn away from me. But I will save them from that sin. I will make them pure and “clean”. They will be my people. And I will be their God.24 ‘ “ ‘A man who belongs to the family line of my servant David will be their king. All of them will have one shepherd. They will obey my laws. And they will be careful to keep my rules.25 They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob. That is where your people of long ago lived. They, their children, their children’s children, and their children after them will live there for ever. And my servant from David’s family line will be their prince for ever.26 I will make a covenant with them. It promises to give them peace. The covenant will last for ever. I will make them my people. And I will cause there to be many of them. I will put my temple among them for ever.27 I will live with them. I will be their God. And they will be my people.28 My temple will be among them for ever. Then the nations will know that I make Israel holy. I am the LORD.’ ” ’

King James Version

1 The hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was full of bones,2 And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold, there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were very dry.3 And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest.4 Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD.5 Thus saith the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and ye shall live:6 And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.7 So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to his bone.8 And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was no breath in them.9 Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy, son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding great army.11 Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost: we are cut off for our parts.12 Therefore prophesy and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.13 And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your graves,14 And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken it , and performed it , saith the LORD.15 The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,16 Moreover, thou son of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions:17 And join them one to another into one stick; and they shall become one in thine hand.18 And when the children of thy people shall speak unto thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these?19 Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.20 And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thine hand before their eyes.21 And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land:22 And I will make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all:23 Neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God.24 And David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my statutes, and do them.25 And they shall dwell in the land that I have given unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children' children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for ever.26 Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.27 My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.28 And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore.

from Katholisches Bibelwerk
(Eze 36:23)
