1Who is like the wise? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man’s wisdom makes his face shine, and the hardness of his face is changed. (De 28:50; Pr 4:8; Pr 21:29; Ac 6:15)2I say:[1] Keep the king’s command, because of God’s oath to him.[2] (Ex 22:11; 2Sa 21:7; 1Ki 2:43; 2Ch 36:13; Eze 17:18)3Be not hasty to go from his presence. Do not take your stand in an evil cause, for he does whatever he pleases. (Ec 10:4)4For the word of the king is supreme, and who may say to him, “What are you doing?” (Job 9:12; Da 4:35)5Whoever keeps a command will know no evil thing, and the wise heart will know the proper time and the just way.[3]6For there is a time and a way for everything, although man’s trouble[4] lies heavy on him. (Ec 3:1; Ec 3:17)7For he does not know what is to be, for who can tell him how it will be? (Pr 24:22; Ec 3:22; Ec 6:12; Ec 9:12; Ec 10:14)8No man has power to retain the spirit, or power over the day of death. There is no discharge from war, nor will wickedness deliver those who are given to it. (De 20:5; Job 14:5; Ec 3:19; Ec 9:11)9All this I observed while applying my heart to all that is done under the sun, when man had power over man to his hurt. (Ec 1:13)
Those Who Fear God Will Do Well
10Then I saw the wicked buried. They used to go in and out of the holy place and were praised[5] in the city where they had done such things. This also is vanity.[6] (Ne 11:1; Pr 10:7; Ec 9:5; Mt 24:15)11Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil. (Es 7:5; Ps 10:6; Ps 50:21; Isa 26:10; Ac 5:3; Ro 2:4; 2Pe 3:9)12Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him. (De 12:25; Ps 37:11; Ps 37:18; Pr 1:33; Ec 7:15; Isa 3:10; Isa 65:20; Mt 25:34)13But it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God. (Job 14:2; Ec 6:12; Isa 3:11)
Man Cannot Know God’s Ways
14There is a vanity that takes place on earth, that there are righteous people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, and there are wicked people to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity. (Job 21:7; Ps 17:9; Ps 73:3; Ps 73:12; Ec 2:14; Ec 7:15; Jer 12:1)15And I commend joy, for man has nothing better under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun. (1Ki 4:20; Ec 2:24)16When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on earth, how neither day nor night do one’s eyes see sleep, (Ps 127:2; Ec 1:13; Ec 3:10)17then I saw all the work of God, that man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. However much man may toil in seeking, he will not find it out. Even though a wise man claims to know, he cannot find it out. (Ps 73:16; Pr 25:2; Ec 3:11)
Ecclesiastes 8
New International Version
from Biblica1Who is like the wise? Who knows the explanation of things? A person’s wisdom brightens their face and changes its hard appearance.
Obey the king
2Obey the king’s command, I say, because you took an oath before God.3Do not be in a hurry to leave the king’s presence. Do not stand up for a bad cause, for he will do whatever he pleases.4Since a king’s word is supreme, who can say to him, ‘What are you doing?’5Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm, and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure.6For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter, though a person may be weighed down by misery.7Since no-one knows the future, who can tell someone else what is to come?8As no-one has power over the wind to contain it, so[1] no-one has power over the time of their death. As no-one is discharged in time of war, so wickedness will not release those who practise it.9All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own[2] hurt.10Then too, I saw the wicked buried – those who used to come and go from the holy place and receive praise[3] in the city where they did this. This too is meaningless.11When the sentence for a crime is not quickly carried out, people’s hearts are filled with schemes to do wrong.12Although a wicked person who commits a hundred crimes may live a long time, I know that it will go better with those who fear God, who are reverent before him.13Yet because the wicked do not fear God, it will not go well with them, and their days will not lengthen like a shadow.14There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: the righteous who get what the wicked deserve, and the wicked who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless.15So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.16When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the labour that is done on earth – people getting no sleep day or night –17then I saw all that God has done. No-one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no-one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it.
Ecclesiastes 8
New International Reader’s Version
from Biblica1Who is like a wise person? Who knows how to explain things? A person’s wisdom makes their face bright. It softens the look on their face.
Obey the king
2I’m telling you to obey the king’s command. You promised to serve him. You made a promise to God.3Don’t be in a hurry to quit your job in the palace. Don’t stand up for something the king doesn’t like. He’ll do anything he wants to.4The king has the final word. So who can ask him, ‘What are you doing?’5No one who obeys his command will be harmed. Those who are wise will know the proper time and way to approach him.6There’s a proper time and way for people to do everything. That’s true even though a person might be suffering greatly.7No one knows what lies ahead. So who can tell someone else what’s going to happen?8No one can stop the wind from blowing. And no one has the power to decide when they will die. No one is let out of the army in times of war. And evil won’t let go of those who practise it.9I understood all these things. I used my mind to study everything that’s done on earth. A man sometimes makes life hard for others. But he ends up hurting himself.10I also saw sinful people being buried. They used to come and go from the place of worship. And others praised them in the city where they worshipped. That doesn’t have any meaning either.11Sometimes the sentence for a crime isn’t carried out quickly. So people make plans to commit even more crimes.12An evil person may be guilty of a hundred crimes. Yet they may still live a long time. But I know that things will go better with those who have great respect for God.13Sinful people don’t respect God. So things won’t go well with them. Like a shadow, they won’t be around very long.14Here’s something else on this earth that doesn’t have any meaning. Sometimes godly people get what sinful people should receive. And sinful people get what godly people should receive. Here’s what I’m telling you. That doesn’t have any meaning either.15So I advise everyone to enjoy life. A person on this earth can’t do anything better than eat and drink and be glad. Then they will enjoy their work. They’ll be happy all the days of the life God has given them on earth.16I used my mind to understand what it really means to be wise. I wanted to observe the hard work people do on earth. They don’t close their eyes and go to sleep day or night.17I saw everything God has done. No one can understand what happens on earth. People might try very hard to figure it out. But they still can’t discover what it all means. Wise people might claim they know. But they can’t really understand it either.
Ecclesiastes 8
King James Version
1Who is as the wise man ? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man' wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.2I counsel thee to keep the king' commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.3Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.4Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?5Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man' heart discerneth both time and judgment.6Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.7For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?8There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.9All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.10And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.11Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.12Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:13But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.14There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men , unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men , to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.15Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.16When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)17Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it ; yea further; though a wise man think to know it , yet shall he not be able to find it .
Wer also kann ihm sagen: Was tust du? (Job 9:12)
(Job 21:7; Ps 37:17; Pr 10:27)
Weiterführung
13Freilich kenne ich das Wort:
Denen, die Gott fürchten, wird es gut gehen, / weil sie sich vor ihm fürchten;
Es gibt gesetzestreue Menschen, denen es so ergeht, / als hätten sie wie Gesetzesbrecher gehandelt;
