Matthew 1

English Standard Version

1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. (Ge 22:18; 2Sa 7:12; Ps 132:11; Isa 11:1; Jer 23:5; Lu 1:32; Lu 1:69; Lu 3:23; Joh 7:42; Ac 2:30; Ac 13:23; Ro 1:3; Ga 3:16; 2Ti 2:8; Re 22:16)2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, (Ge 21:3; Ge 25:26; Ge 29:35)3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram,[1] (Ru 4:18; 1Ch 2:1)4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon,5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, (Jos 6:25)6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, (1Sa 16:1; 1Sa 17:12; 2Sa 12:10; 2Sa 12:24)7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asaph,[2] (1Ch 3:10)8 and Asaph the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah, (2Ki 15:1; 1Ch 3:11)9 and Uzziah the father of Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,10 and Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos,[3] and Amos the father of Josiah,11 and Josiah the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. (1Ch 3:15; Es 2:6; Jer 24:1; Jer 27:20)12 And after the deportation to Babylon: Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel,[4] and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, (1Ch 3:17; Ezr 3:2; Lu 3:27)13 and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor,14 and Azor the father of Zadok, and Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud,15 and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob,16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. (Lu 3:23)17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ fourteen generations. (Mt 2:4; Mt 11:2; Mt 16:16; Mt 22:42; Mt 23:10; Mr 8:29; Lu 3:15; Joh 1:41; Joh 4:25)18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ[5] took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed[6] to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. (Mt 1:1; Mt 1:16; Mr 1:1; Lu 1:27; Lu 1:35; Joh 1:17; Joh 17:3)19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. (De 24:1)20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. (Mt 2:12; Mt 2:13; Mt 2:19; Mt 2:22)21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Mt 1:25; Lu 1:31; Lu 2:11; Lu 2:21; Ac 3:26; Ac 4:12; Ac 5:31; Ac 13:23; Ac 13:38)22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: (Mt 2:15; Mt 2:23; Mt 4:14; Mt 21:4; Mt 26:56; Mr 14:49; Joh 19:36)23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). (Isa 7:14; Isa 8:8; Isa 8:10; Mt 28:20)24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. (Mt 1:21)

Matthew 1

New International Version

1 This is the genealogy[1] of Jesus the Messiah[2] the son of David, the son of Abraham:2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,3 Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,4 Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse,6 and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife,7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa,8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah,9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah,11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah[3] and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,13 Zerubbabel the father of Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor,14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Elihud,15 Elihud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[4]: his mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[5] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[6] because he will save his people from their sins.’22 All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet:23 ‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’). (Isa 7:14)24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

Matthew 1

King James Version

1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Matthew 1

New International Reader’s Version

1 This is the written story of the family line of Jesus the Messiah. He is the son of David. He is also the son of Abraham.2 Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob. Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah. Tamar was their mother. Perez was the father of Hezron. Hezron was the father of Ram.4 Ram was the father of Amminadab. Amminadab was the father of Nahshon. Nahshon was the father of Salmon.5 Salmon was the father of Boaz. Rahab was Boaz’s mother. Boaz was the father of Obed. Ruth was Obed’s mother. Obed was the father of Jesse.6 And Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon. Solomon’s mother had been Uriah’s wife.7 Solomon was the father of Rehoboam. Rehoboam was the father of Abijah. Abijah was the father of Asa.8 Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat was the father of Jehoram. Jehoram was the father of Uzziah.9 Uzziah was the father of Jotham. Jotham was the father of Ahaz. Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.10 Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh. Manasseh was the father of Amon. Amon was the father of Josiah.11 And Josiah was the father of Jeconiah and his brothers. At that time, the Jewish people were forced to go away to Babylon.12 After this, the family line continued. Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel.13 Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud. Abihud was the father of Eliakim. Eliakim was the father of Azor.14 Azor was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Akim. Akim was the father of Elihud.15 Elihud was the father of Eleazar. Eleazar was the father of Matthan. Matthan was the father of Jacob.16 Jacob was the father of Joseph. Joseph was the husband of Mary. And Mary was the mother of Jesus, who is called the Messiah.17 So there were 14 generations from Abraham to David. There were 14 from David until the Jewish people were forced to go away to Babylon. And there were 14 from that time to the Messiah.18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about. His mother Mary and Joseph had promised to get married. But before they started to live together, it became clear that she was going to have a baby. She became pregnant by the power of the Holy Spirit.19 Her husband Joseph was faithful to the law. But he did not want to put her to shame in public. So he planned to divorce her quietly.20 But as Joseph was thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel said, ‘Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take Mary home as your wife. The baby inside her is from the Holy Spirit.21 She is going to have a son. You must give him the name Jesus. That’s because he will save his people from their sins.’22 All this took place to bring about what the Lord had said would happen. He had said through the prophet,23 ‘The virgin is going to have a baby. She will give birth to a son. And he will be called Immanuel.’ The name Immanuel means ‘God with us.’ (Isa 7:14)24 Joseph woke up. He did what the angel of the Lord commanded him to do. He took Mary home as his wife.25 But he did not sleep with her until she gave birth to a son. And Joseph gave him the name Jesus.
