1Or do you not know, brothers[1]—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives?2For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage.[2] (1Co 7:39)3Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress. The Law and Sin
7What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” (Ex 20:17; De 5:21; Ro 3:20; Ro 13:9)8But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. (Ro 7:11; 1Co 15:56; Ga 5:13)9I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive and I died.10The very commandment that promised life proved to be death to me. (Ro 10:5)11For sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, deceived me and through it killed me. (Ge 3:13; Ro 7:8; Heb 3:13)12So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good. (Ps 19:8; Ps 119:137; Ro 7:16; 2Pe 2:21)13Did that which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means! It was sin, producing death in me through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment might become sinful beyond measure.14For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. (1Ki 21:20; 1Ki 21:25; 2Ki 17:17; Isa 50:1; Isa 52:3)15For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. (Ro 7:18; Ga 5:17)16Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. (Ro 7:12; 1Ti 1:8)17So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. (Ro 7:20)18For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. (Ge 6:5; Ge 8:21; Job 14:4; Job 15:14; Ps 51:5)19For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. (Ro 7:15)20Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. (Ro 7:17)21So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.22For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, (Ps 1:2; Ps 112:1; Ps 119:35; 2Co 4:16; Eph 3:16; 1Pe 3:4)23but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. (Ga 5:17; Jas 4:1)24Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? (Ro 6:6; Ro 8:23)25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

Freiheit vom Gesetz
1Wisst ihr nicht, Brüder und Schwestern – denn ich rede mit denen, die das Gesetz kennen –, dass das Gesetz nur herrscht über den Menschen, solange er lebt?2Denn eine Ehefrau ist an ihren Mann gebunden durch das Gesetz, solange der Mann lebt; wenn aber der Mann stirbt, so ist sie frei von dem Gesetz, das sie an den Mann bindet. (1Co 7:39)3Wenn sie nun bei einem andern Mann ist, solange ihr Mann lebt, wird sie eine Ehebrecherin genannt; wenn aber ihr Mann stirbt, ist sie frei vom Gesetz, sodass sie keine Ehebrecherin ist, wenn sie bei einem andern Mann ist.4Also seid auch ihr, meine Brüder und Schwestern, dem Gesetz getötet durch den Leib Christi, sodass ihr einem andern angehört, nämlich dem, der von den Toten auferweckt ist, damit wir Gott Frucht bringen.5Denn als wir im Fleisch waren, da waren die sündigen Leidenschaften, die durchs Gesetz geweckt wurden, kräftig in unsern Gliedern, sodass wir dem Tode Frucht brachten. 7Was wollen wir hierzu sagen? Ist das Gesetz Sünde? Das sei ferne! Aber die Sünde erkannte ich nicht außer durchs Gesetz. Denn ich wüsste nichts von der Begierde, wenn das Gesetz nicht gesagt hätte: »Du sollst nicht begehren!« (Ex 20:17)8Die Sünde aber nahm das Gebot zum Anlass und erregte in mir Begierden jeder Art; denn ohne das Gesetz war die Sünde tot. (Ro 5:13; 1Co 15:56)9Ich lebte einst ohne Gesetz; als aber das Gebot kam, wurde die Sünde lebendig,10ich aber starb. Und so fand sich’s, dass das Gebot mir den Tod brachte, das doch zum Leben gegeben war. (Le 18:5)11Denn die Sünde nahm das Gebot zum Anlass und betrog mich und tötete mich durch das Gebot. (Heb 3:13)12So ist also das Gesetz heilig, und das Gebot ist heilig, gerecht und gut. (1Ti 1:8)13Ist dann, was doch gut ist, mir zum Tod geworden? Das sei ferne! Sondern die Sünde, auf dass sie als Sünde sichtbar werde, hat mir durch das Gute den Tod gebracht, auf dass die Sünde über alle Maßen sündig werde durchs Gebot. (Ro 5:20)14Denn wir wissen, dass das Gesetz geistlich ist; ich aber bin fleischlich, unter die Sünde verkauft.15Denn ich weiß nicht, was ich tue. Denn ich tue nicht, was ich will; sondern was ich hasse, das tue ich.16Wenn ich aber das tue, was ich nicht will, stimme ich dem Gesetz zu, dass es gut ist.17So tue ich das nicht mehr selbst, sondern die Sünde, die in mir wohnt.18Denn ich weiß, dass in mir, das heißt in meinem Fleisch[1], nichts Gutes wohnt. Wollen habe ich wohl, aber das Gute vollbringen kann ich nicht. (Ge 6:5; Ge 8:21; Ro 7:25; Ro 8:3)19Denn das Gute, das ich will, das tue ich nicht; sondern das Böse, das ich nicht will, das tue ich.20Wenn ich aber tue, was ich nicht will, vollbringe nicht mehr ich es, sondern die Sünde, die in mir wohnt.21So finde ich nun das Gesetz: Mir, der ich das Gute tun will, hängt das Böse an.22Denn ich habe Freude an Gottes Gesetz nach dem inwendigen Menschen. (Eph 3:16)23Ich sehe aber ein anderes Gesetz in meinen Gliedern, das widerstreitet dem Gesetz in meinem Verstand und hält mich gefangen im Gesetz der Sünde, das in meinen Gliedern ist.
