A Census of Israel’s Warriors

1 The Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt, saying, (Ex 19:1; Ex 25:22; Nu 10:11) 

2 “Take a census of all the congregation of the people of Israel, by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head. (Ex 30:12; Ex 38:26; Nu 1:18; Nu 1:20; Nu 1:22; Nu 3:47; Nu 26:2; 2Sa 24:2; 1Ch 21:2; 1Ch 23:3; 1Ch 23:24) 

3 From twenty years old and upward, all in Israel who are able to go to war, you and Aaron shall list them, company by company. (Ex 12:51; Ex 30:14; Nu 14:29) 

4 And there shall be with you a man from each tribe, each man being the head of the house of his fathers. 

5 And these are the names of the men who shall assist you. From Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur; (Nu 7:30) 

6 from Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai; (Nu 7:36) 

7 from Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab; (Ex 6:23) 

8 from Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; (Nu 7:18) 

9 from Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; (Nu 7:24) 

10 from the sons of Joseph, from Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud, and from Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; (Nu 7:48; Nu 7:54; 1Ch 7:26) 

11 from Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; (Nu 7:60) 

12 from Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; (Nu 7:66) 

13 from Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran; (Nu 7:72) 

14 from Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel; (Nu 7:42) 

15 from Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.” (Nu 7:78) 

16 These were the ones chosen from the congregation, the chiefs of their ancestral tribes, the heads of the clans of Israel. (Ex 18:21; Ex 18:25; Nu 7:2; Nu 26:9; 1Ch 27:16) 

17 Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named, (1Ch 12:31; 1Ch 16:41; 2Ch 28:15; 2Ch 31:19; Ezr 8:20) 

18 and on the first day of the second month, they assembled the whole congregation together, who registered themselves by clans, by fathers’ houses, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upward, head by head, 

19 as the Lord commanded Moses. So he listed them in the wilderness of Sinai. 

20 The people of Reuben, Israel’s firstborn, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war: (Nu 2:3) 

21 those listed of the tribe of Reuben were 46,500. (Nu 26:7) 

22 Of the people of Simeon, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, those of them who were listed, according to the number of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war: 

23 those listed of the tribe of Simeon were 59,300. (Nu 26:14) 

24 Of the people of Gad, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all who were able to go to war: 

25 those listed of the tribe of Gad were 45,650. (Nu 26:18) 

26 Of the people of Judah, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 

27 those listed of the tribe of Judah were 74,600. (Nu 26:22; 2Sa 24:9) 

28 Of the people of Issachar, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 

29 those listed of the tribe of Issachar were 54,400. (Nu 26:25) 

30 Of the people of Zebulun, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 

31 those listed of the tribe of Zebulun were 57,400. (Nu 26:27) 

32 Of the people of Joseph, namely, of the people of Ephraim, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 

33 those listed of the tribe of Ephraim were 40,500. (Nu 26:37) 

34 Of the people of Manasseh, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 

35 those listed of the tribe of Manasseh were 32,200. (Nu 26:34) 

36 Of the people of Benjamin, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 

37 those listed of the tribe of Benjamin were 35,400. (Nu 26:41) 

38 Of the people of Dan, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 

39 those listed of the tribe of Dan were 62,700. (Nu 26:43) 

40 Of the people of Asher, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 

41 those listed of the tribe of Asher were 41,500. (Nu 26:47) 

42 Of the people of Naphtali, their generations, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war: 

43 those listed of the tribe of Naphtali were 53,400. (Nu 26:50) 

44 These are those who were listed, whom Moses and Aaron listed with the help of the chiefs of Israel, twelve men, each representing his fathers’ house. (Nu 26:64) 

45 So all those listed of the people of Israel, by their fathers’ houses, from twenty years old and upward, every man able to go to war in Israel— 

46 all those listed were 603,550. (Ex 12:37; Ex 38:26; Nu 11:21; Nu 26:51) 

Levites Exempted

47 But the Levites were not listed along with them by their ancestral tribe. (Nu 2:33; Nu 26:57; Nu 26:62) 

48 For the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 

49 “Only the tribe of Levi you shall not list, and you shall not take a census of them among the people of Israel. 

50 But appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all its furnishings, and over all that belongs to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall take care of it and shall camp around the tabernacle. (Ex 38:21; Nu 3:7; Nu 3:23; Nu 4:15) 

51 When the tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up. And if any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death. (Nu 3:10; Nu 3:38; Nu 10:17; Nu 10:21; Nu 18:22; 1Sa 6:19; 2Sa 6:6; 1Ch 13:10) 

52 The people of Israel shall pitch their tents by their companies, each man in his own camp and each man by his own standard. (Nu 2:2; Nu 2:34) 

53 But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the people of Israel. And the Levites shall keep guard over the tabernacle of the testimony.” (Nu 3:7; Nu 3:38; Nu 8:19; Nu 8:26; Nu 9:19; Nu 9:23; Nu 16:46; Nu 18:3; Nu 18:5; Nu 31:30; Nu 31:47; 1Ch 23:32; 2Ch 13:11) 

54 Thus did the people of Israel; they did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses.

Zählung des Volkes

1 Und der HERR redete mit Mose in der Wüste Sinai in der Stiftshütte am ersten Tage des zweiten Monats im zweiten Jahr, nachdem sie aus Ägyptenland gezogen waren, und sprach: (Ex 40:17; Nu 26:2) 

2 Nehmt die Summe der ganzen Gemeinde der Israeliten auf nach ihren Geschlechtern und Sippen und Namen, alles, was männlich ist, Kopf für Kopf, (Ge 35:23; Ex 30:12) 

3 von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann in Israel. Ihr sollt sie zählen nach ihren Heerscharen, du und Aaron. 

4 Und es soll euch beistehen je ein Mann von jedem Stamm, nämlich das Haupt seiner Sippe. 

5 Dies sind aber die Namen der Männer, die euch beistehen sollen: von Ruben: Elizur, der Sohn Schedëurs; 

6 von Simeon: Schelumiël, der Sohn Zurischaddais; 

7 von Juda: Nachschon, der Sohn Amminadabs; (Ex 6:23) 

8 von Issachar: Netanel, der Sohn Zuars; 

9 von Sebulon: Eliab, der Sohn Helons; 

10 von den Söhnen Josefs: von Ephraim: Elischama, der Sohn Ammihuds; und von Manasse: Gamliël, der Sohn Pedazurs; (Ge 48:5; 1Ch 7:26) 

11 von Benjamin: Abidan, der Sohn des Gidoni; 

12 von Dan: Ahiëser, der Sohn Ammischaddais; 

13 von Asser: Pagiël, der Sohn Ochrans; 

14 von Gad: Eljasaf, der Sohn Deguëls; 

15 von Naftali: Ahira, der Sohn Enans. 

16 Das sind die Berufenen aus der Gemeinde, die Fürsten unter den Stämmen ihrer Väter, die da Häupter über die Tausende in Israel waren. 

17 Und Mose und Aaron nahmen diese Männer zu sich, wie sie da mit Namen genannt sind, 

18 und versammelten die ganze Gemeinde am ersten Tage des zweiten Monats, und sie ließen sich einschreiben nach ihren Geschlechtern und Sippen und Namen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, Kopf für Kopf, 

19 wie der HERR es Mose geboten hatte. So zählte er sie in der Wüste Sinai. 

20 Die Söhne Rubens, des ersten Sohnes Israels, nach ihrer Abstammung und ihren Geschlechtern, ihren Sippen und Namen, Kopf für Kopf, alles, was männlich war, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann, 

21 so viele ihrer vom Stamm Ruben gezählt wurden, waren 46500. 

22 Die Söhne Simeon nach ihrer Abstammung und ihren Geschlechtern, ihren Sippen und Namen, Kopf für Kopf, alles, was männlich war, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann, 

23 so viele ihrer vom Stamm Simeon gezählt wurden, waren 59300. 

24 Die Söhne Gad nach ihrer Abstammung und ihren Geschlechtern, ihren Sippen und Namen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann, 

25 so viele ihrer vom Stamm Gad gezählt wurden, waren 45650. 

26 Die Söhne Juda nach ihrer Abstammung und ihren Geschlechtern, ihren Sippen und Namen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann, 

27 so viele ihrer vom Stamm Juda gezählt wurden, waren 74600. 

28 Die Söhne Issachar nach ihrer Abstammung und ihren Geschlechtern, ihren Sippen und Namen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann, 

29 so viele ihrer vom Stamm Issachar gezählt wurden, waren 54400. 

30 Die Söhne Sebulon nach ihrer Abstammung und ihren Geschlechtern, ihren Sippen und Namen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann, 

31 so viele ihrer vom Stamm Sebulon gezählt wurden, waren 57400. 

32 Die Söhne Josef: die Söhne Ephraim nach ihrer Abstammung und ihren Geschlechtern, ihren Sippen und Namen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann, 

33 so viele ihrer vom Stamm Ephraim gezählt wurden, waren 40500; 

34 die Söhne Manasse nach ihrer Abstammung und ihren Geschlechtern, ihren Sippen und Namen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann, 

35 so viele ihrer vom Stamm Manasse gezählt wurden, waren 32200. 

36 Die Söhne Benjamin nach ihrer Abstammung und ihren Geschlechtern, ihren Sippen und Namen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann, 

37 so viele ihrer vom Stamm Benjamin gezählt wurden, waren 35400. 

38 Die Söhne Dan nach ihrer Abstammung und ihren Geschlechtern, ihren Sippen und Namen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann, 

39 so viele ihrer vom Stamm Dan gezählt wurden, waren 62700. 

40 Die Söhne Asser nach ihrer Abstammung und ihren Geschlechtern, ihren Sippen und Namen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann, 

41 so viele ihrer vom Stamm Asser gezählt wurden, waren 41500. 

42 Die Söhne Naftali nach ihrer Abstammung und ihren Geschlechtern, ihren Sippen und Namen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann, 

43 so viele ihrer vom Stamm Naftali gezählt wurden, waren 53400. 

44 Dies sind die Männer, die Mose zählte mit Aaron und den zwölf Fürsten Israels, von denen jeder seiner Sippe vorstand. (Ge 17:20; Ge 25:16) 

45 Und die Summe der Israeliten nach ihren Sippen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alles, was mit dem Heer hinausziehen kann in Israel, 

46 war 603550. (Ex 12:37; Nu 2:32) 

47 Die aber Leviten waren nach dem Stamm ihrer Väter, wurden nicht mit darunter gezählt. 

48 Und der HERR redete mit Mose und sprach: 

49 Den Stamm Levi sollst du nicht zählen noch seine Summe aufnehmen unter die Israeliten, (Nu 2:33; Nu 3:15) 

50 sondern du sollst ihnen die Wohnung des Gesetzes anvertrauen, mit all ihrem Gerät und allem, was dazugehört. Sie sollen die Wohnung tragen und alle Geräte und sollen sie in ihre Obhut nehmen und um die Wohnung her sich lagern. (Ex 38:21; Nu 3:23; Nu 4:1) 

51 Wenn die Wohnung aufbricht, sollen die Leviten sie abbauen. Wenn aber die Wohnung haltmacht, sollen die Leviten sie aufschlagen. Und wenn ein Fremder sich naht, der soll sterben. (Nu 3:10; Nu 3:38; Nu 17:5) 

52 Die Israeliten sollen sich lagern nach ihren Heerscharen, ein jeder in seinem Lager und bei seinem Banner. 

53 Aber die Leviten sollen Sorge tragen um die Wohnung des Gesetzes, damit nicht ein Zorn über die Gemeinde der Israeliten komme. So sollen die Leviten ihren Dienst versehen an der Wohnung des Gesetzes. (Nu 17:11; Nu 18:5; Jos 9:20; 2Sa 24:1; 2Ch 19:2; Isa 57:17; Isa 64:4) 

54 Und die Israeliten taten alles, wie der HERR es Mose geboten hatte. So taten sie’s.
