1In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, (Mt 14:1; Mt 27:2; Mr 6:14; Lu 2:1; Lu 2:2; Lu 3:19; Lu 8:3; Lu 9:7; Lu 9:9; Lu 13:31; Lu 23:7; Ac 4:27; Ac 13:1)2during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness. Denn ich sage euch: Gott kann dem Abraham aus diesen Steinen Kinder erwecken.9Es ist schon die Axt den Bäumen an die Wurzel gelegt; jeder Baum, der nicht gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen.10Und die Menge fragte ihn und sprach: Was sollen wir nun tun?11Er antwortete aber und sprach zu ihnen: Wer zwei Hemden hat, der gebe dem, der keines hat; und wer Speise hat, tue ebenso.12Es kamen aber auch Zöllner, um sich taufen zu lassen, und sprachen zu ihm: Meister, was sollen denn wir tun?13Er sprach zu ihnen: Fordert nicht mehr, als euch vorgeschrieben ist!14Da fragten ihn auch Soldaten und sprachen: Was sollen denn wir tun? Und er sprach zu ihnen: Tut niemandem Gewalt noch Unrecht und lasst euch genügen an eurem Sold!15Als aber das Volk voll Erwartung war und alle dachten in ihren Herzen, ob Johannes vielleicht der Christus wäre, (Joh 1:19)16antwortete Johannes und sprach zu allen: Ich taufe euch mit Wasser; es kommt aber der, der stärker ist als ich; ich bin nicht wert, dass ich ihm die Riemen seiner Schuhe löse; der wird euch mit dem Heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.17In seiner Hand ist die Worfschaufel, und er wird die Spreu vom Weizen trennen und den Weizen in seine Scheune sammeln, die Spreu aber wird er mit unauslöschlichem Feuer verbrennen.18Und mit vielem andern mehr ermahnte er das Volk und predigte ihm.19Herodes aber, der Landesfürst, der von Johannes zurechtgewiesen wurde wegen Herodias, der Frau seines Bruders, und wegen all des Bösen, das er getan hatte, (Mt 14:3; Mr 6:17)20fügte zu dem allen noch dies hinzu: Er warf Johannes ins Gefängnis.

21Und es begab sich, als alles Volk sich taufen ließ und Jesus auch getauft worden war und betete, da tat sich der Himmel auf, (Mt 3:13; Mr 1:9)22und der Heilige Geist fuhr hernieder auf ihn in leiblicher Gestalt wie eine Taube, und eine Stimme kam aus dem Himmel: Du bist mein lieber Sohn, an dir habe ich Wohlgefallen.
