Dedication to Theophilus

1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, (Ac 3:18; 2Ti 4:5; 2Ti 4:17) 

2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, (Mr 1:1; Mr 4:14; Joh 15:27; Joh 16:4; Ac 4:20; Ac 11:15; Ac 26:16; 1Co 4:1; 1Co 11:2; 1Co 11:23; Heb 2:3; 1Pe 5:1; 2Pe 1:16; 1Jo 1:1; 1Jo 1:3) 

3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, (Ac 1:1; Ac 11:4; Ac 23:26; Ac 24:3; Ac 26:25)

Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. (1Ch 24:10; Mt 2:1; Lu 1:8) 

6 And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. (Lu 2:25; Ac 23:1; Ac 24:16; Php 2:15; Php 3:6; 1Th 2:10; 1Th 3:13; 1Th 5:23) 

7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. (Ge 18:11; Jud 13:2; 1Sa 1:2; Lu 1:36; Heb 11:11) 

8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, (1Ch 24:19; 2Ch 8:14; 2Ch 31:2; Lu 1:5; Lu 1:23) 

9 according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. (Ex 30:7; 1Sa 2:28; 1Ch 23:13; 2Ch 29:11; Lu 1:21; Heb 9:2; Re 11:2; Re 11:19) 

10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. (Le 16:17; Ps 141:2; Re 5:8; Re 8:3) 

11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. (Ex 30:1; Ex 40:26) 

12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. (Ac 19:17) 

13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. (Lu 1:60; Lu 1:63; Ac 10:4; Ac 10:31) 

14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, (Lu 1:58) 

15 for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God,

18 And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” (Ge 15:8; Ge 17:17) 

19 And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. (1Ki 17:1; Job 1:6; Isa 63:9; Da 8:16; Da 9:21; Mt 18:10; Lu 1:26; Re 8:2) 

20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.” (Eze 3:26; Eze 24:27) 

21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were wondering at his delay in the temple. (Lu 1:9) 

22 And when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he kept making signs to them and remained mute. (Lu 1:21; Lu 1:62)

24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying, 

25 “Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.” (Ge 30:23; 1Sa 1:6; Ps 113:9; Isa 4:1) 

Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, (Mt 2:23; Lu 1:19) 

27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. (Mt 1:16; Mt 1:18; Mt 1:20; Lu 2:4) 

28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” (Jud 6:12; Ps 45:2; Da 9:23) 

29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. (Lu 1:12) 

30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. (Ac 7:46) 

31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. (Isa 7:14; Mt 1:21; Mt 1:25; Lu 2:21)

34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” 

35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. (Mt 1:18; Mt 1:20; Mt 14:33; Lu 1:32; Joh 6:69) 

36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. (Lu 1:7)

38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. (Jud 6:21; Ac 12:10) 

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, (Jos 20:7; Jos 21:11; Lu 1:65) 

40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 

41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, (Lu 1:15; Lu 1:67) 

42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! (De 28:4; Jud 5:24; Ps 127:3) 

43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (Lu 2:11; Lu 20:42; Joh 20:28) 

44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 

45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” (Lu 1:20; Joh 20:29) 

Mary’s Song of Praise: The Magnificat

46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, (1Sa 2:1; Ps 34:2; Ps 69:30; Ac 10:46; Ac 19:17; 1Th 5:23)

56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home. 

The Birth of John the Baptist

57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. 

58 And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. (Ge 19:19) 

59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, (Ge 17:12; Le 12:3; Lu 2:21; Php 3:5) 

60 but his mother answered, “No; he shall be called John.” (Lu 1:13) 

61 And they said to her, “None of your relatives is called by this name.” 

62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. (Lu 1:22) 

63 And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they all wondered. (Isa 8:1; Isa 30:8; Lu 1:60) 

64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. (Mr 7:35; Lu 1:20; Lu 2:28; Lu 24:53) 

65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea, (Lu 1:39; Lu 7:16) 

66 and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, “What then will this child be?” For the hand of the Lord was with him. (Lu 2:19; Lu 2:51; Ac 11:21; Ac 13:11) 

Zechariah’s Prophecy

67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, (Joe 2:28; Lu 1:15; Lu 1:41) 

68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people (Ex 4:31; 1Ki 1:48; 1Ch 29:10; Ezr 7:27; Ps 41:13; Ps 72:18; Ps 106:48; Ps 111:9; Ps 130:7; Isa 29:23; Isa 43:1; Isa 59:20; Mt 15:31; Lu 1:78; Lu 2:38; Lu 7:16; Lu 24:21; Ac 13:17; Ac 15:14; Heb 2:6) 

69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, (1Sa 2:1; 1Sa 2:10; 2Sa 22:3; Ps 18:2; Ps 132:17; Eze 29:21; Lu 1:32) 

70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, (Jer 23:5; Ac 3:21; Ro 1:2) 

71 that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us; (Ps 106:10) 

72 to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, (Le 26:42; Ps 105:8; Mic 7:20; Lu 1:54; Ro 9:4) 

73 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us (Ge 22:16; Ge 26:3; Heb 6:13) 

74 that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, (Zep 3:15) 

75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. (Jer 32:39; Mt 28:20; Eph 4:24; 1Th 2:10; Tit 2:12)

77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, (Mt 26:28; Mr 1:4)

79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Ps 107:10; Isa 9:2; Isa 42:7; Mt 4:16; Lu 2:14; Joh 8:12; Ac 26:18; Ro 3:17) 

80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel. (Mt 3:1; Mt 11:7; Lu 2:40)

1 Da es nun schon viele unternommen haben, Bericht zu geben von den Geschichten, die sich unter uns erfüllt haben, 

2 wie uns das überliefert haben, die es von Anfang an selbst gesehen haben und Diener des Wortes gewesen sind, (1Jo 1:1) 

3 habe auch ich’s für gut gehalten, nachdem ich alles von Anfang an sorgfältig erkundet habe, es für dich, hochgeehrter Theophilus, in guter Ordnung aufzuschreiben, (Ac 1:1; Col 4:14) 

4 auf dass du den sicheren Grund der Lehre erfährst, in der du unterrichtet bist. 

Die Ankündigung der Geburt Johannes des Täufers

5 Zu der Zeit des Herodes, des Königs von Judäa, lebte ein Priester von der Ordnung Abija mit Namen Zacharias, und seine Frau war von den Töchtern Aaron, die hieß Elisabeth. (1Ch 24:10; 1Ch 24:19) 

6 Sie waren aber alle beide gerecht und fromm vor Gott und lebten in allen Geboten und Satzungen des Herrn untadelig. 

7 Und sie hatten kein Kind; denn Elisabeth war unfruchtbar, und beide waren hochbetagt. 

8 Und es begab sich, als Zacharias den Priesterdienst vor Gott versah, da seine Ordnung an der Reihe war, 

9 dass ihn nach dem Brauch der Priesterschaft das Los traf, das Räucheropfer darzubringen; und er ging in den Tempel des Herrn. (Ex 30:7) 

10 Und die ganze Menge des Volkes betete draußen zur Stunde des Räucheropfers. 

11 Da erschien ihm der Engel des Herrn, der stand an der rechten Seite des Räucheraltars. 

12 Und als Zacharias ihn sah, erschrak er, und Furcht überfiel ihn. 

13 Aber der Engel sprach zu ihm: Fürchte dich nicht, Zacharias, denn dein Gebet ist erhört, und deine Frau Elisabeth wird dir einen Sohn gebären, dem sollst du den Namen Johannes geben. 

14 Und du wirst Freude und Wonne haben, und viele werden sich über seine Geburt freuen. 

15 Denn er wird groß sein vor dem Herrn; Wein und starkes Getränk wird er nicht trinken und wird schon von Mutterleib an erfüllt werden mit dem Heiligen Geist. (Jud 13:4) 

16 Und er wird viele der Israeliten zu dem Herrn, ihrem Gott, bekehren. 

17 Und er wird vor ihm hergehen im Geist und in der Kraft des Elia, zu bekehren die Herzen der Väter zu den Kindern und die Ungehorsamen zu der Klugheit der Gerechten, zuzurichten dem Herrn ein Volk, das wohl vorbereitet ist. (Mal 3:1; Mal 3:23; Mt 17:11) 

18 Und Zacharias sprach zu dem Engel: Woran soll ich das erkennen? Denn ich bin alt und meine Frau ist hochbetagt. (Ge 18:11) 

19 Der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Ich bin Gabriel, der vor Gott steht, und bin gesandt, mit dir zu reden und dir dies zu verkündigen. (Da 8:16) 

20 Und siehe, du wirst verstummen und nicht reden können bis zu dem Tag, an dem dies geschehen wird, weil du meinen Worten nicht geglaubt hast, die erfüllt werden sollen zu ihrer Zeit. 

21 Und das Volk wartete auf Zacharias und wunderte sich, dass er so lange im Tempel blieb. 

22 Als er aber herauskam, konnte er nicht mit ihnen reden; und sie merkten, dass er eine Erscheinung gehabt hatte im Tempel. Und er winkte ihnen und blieb stumm. 

23 Und es begab sich, als die Zeit seines Dienstes um war, da ging er heim in sein Haus. 

24 Nach diesen Tagen wurde seine Frau Elisabeth schwanger und hielt sich fünf Monate verborgen und sprach: 

25 So hat der Herr an mir getan in den Tagen, als er mich angesehen hat, um meine Schmach unter den Menschen von mir zu nehmen. (Ge 30:23) 

Die Ankündigung der Geburt Jesu

26 Und im sechsten Monat wurde der Engel Gabriel von Gott gesandt in eine Stadt in Galiläa, die heißt Nazareth, 

27 zu einer Jungfrau, die vertraut war einem Mann mit Namen Josef vom Hause David; und die Jungfrau hieß Maria. (Mt 1:16; Mt 1:18) 

28 Und der Engel kam zu ihr hinein und sprach: Sei gegrüßt, du Begnadete! Der Herr ist mit dir! 

29 Sie aber erschrak über die Rede und dachte: Welch ein Gruß ist das? 

30 Und der Engel sprach zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht, Maria! Du hast Gnade bei Gott gefunden. 

31 Siehe, du wirst schwanger werden und einen Sohn gebären, dem sollst du den Namen Jesus geben. (Isa 7:14; Mt 1:21) 

32 Der wird groß sein und Sohn des Höchsten genannt werden; und Gott der Herr wird ihm den Thron seines Vaters David geben, (Isa 9:6) 

33 und er wird König sein über das Haus Jakob in Ewigkeit, und sein Reich wird kein Ende haben. 

34 Da sprach Maria zu dem Engel: Wie soll das zugehen, da ich doch von keinem Manne weiß? 

35 Der Engel antwortete und sprach zu ihr: Der Heilige Geist wird über dich kommen, und die Kraft des Höchsten wird dich überschatten; darum wird auch das Heilige, das geboren wird, Gottes Sohn genannt werden. (Mt 1:18; Mt 1:20) 

36 Und siehe, Elisabeth, deine Verwandte, ist auch schwanger mit einem Sohn, in ihrem Alter, und ist jetzt im sechsten Monat, sie, von der man sagt, dass sie unfruchtbar sei. 

37 Denn bei Gott ist kein Ding unmöglich. (Ge 18:14) 

38 Maria aber sprach: Siehe, ich bin des Herrn Magd; mir geschehe, wie du gesagt hast. Und der Engel schied von ihr. 

Marias Besuch bei Elisabeth (Mariä Heimsuchung)

39 Maria aber machte sich auf in diesen Tagen und ging eilends in das Gebirge zu einer Stadt in Juda 

40 und kam in das Haus des Zacharias und begrüßte Elisabeth. 

41 Und es begab sich, als Elisabeth den Gruß Marias hörte, hüpfte das Kind in ihrem Leibe. Und Elisabeth wurde vom Heiligen Geist erfüllt 

42 und rief laut und sprach: Gesegnet bist du unter den Frauen, und gesegnet ist die Frucht deines Leibes! 

43 Und wie geschieht mir, dass die Mutter meines Herrn zu mir kommt? 

44 Denn siehe, als ich die Stimme deines Grußes hörte, hüpfte das Kind vor Freude in meinem Leibe. 

45 Ja, selig ist, die da geglaubt hat! Denn es wird vollendet werden, was ihr gesagt ist von dem Herrn. (Lu 11:27) 

Marias Lobgesang

46 Und Maria sprach: Meine Seele erhebt den Herrn, (1Sa 2:1) 

47 und mein Geist freuet sich Gottes, meines Heilandes; 

48 denn er hat die Niedrigkeit seiner Magd angesehen. Siehe, von nun an werden mich selig preisen alle Kindeskinder. 

49 Denn er hat große Dinge an mir getan, der da mächtig ist und dessen Name heilig ist. 

50 Und seine Barmherzigkeit währet für und für bei denen, die ihn fürchten. (Ps 103:13; Ps 103:17) 

51 Er übt Gewalt mit seinem Arm und zerstreut, die hoffärtig sind in ihres Herzens Sinn. (Ge 11:8) 

52 Er stößt die Gewaltigen vom Thron und erhebt die Niedrigen. (Ps 147:6) 

53 Die Hungrigen füllt er mit Gütern und lässt die Reichen leer ausgehen. (Ps 34:11; Ps 107:9) 

54 Er gedenkt der Barmherzigkeit und hilft seinem Diener Israel auf, 

55 wie er geredet hat zu unsern Vätern, Abraham und seinen Nachkommen in Ewigkeit. (Ge 17:7; Ge 18:18) 

56 Und Maria blieb bei ihr etwa drei Monate; danach kehrte sie wieder heim. 

Die Geburt Johannes des Täufers

57 Und für Elisabeth kam die Zeit, dass sie gebären sollte; und sie gebar einen Sohn. 

58 Und ihre Nachbarn und Verwandten hörten, dass der Herr große Barmherzigkeit an ihr getan hatte, und freuten sich mit ihr. 

59 Und es begab sich am achten Tag, da kamen sie, das Kindlein zu beschneiden, und wollten es nach seinem Vater Zacharias nennen. (Ge 17:12) 

60 Aber seine Mutter antwortete und sprach: Nein, sondern er soll Johannes heißen. 

61 Und sie sprachen zu ihr: Ist doch niemand in deiner Verwandtschaft, der so heißt. 

62 Und sie winkten seinem Vater, wie er ihn nennen lassen wollte. 

63 Und er forderte eine kleine Tafel und schrieb: Er heißt Johannes. Und sie wunderten sich alle. 

64 Und sogleich wurde sein Mund und seine Zunge aufgetan, und er redete und lobte Gott. 

65 Und es kam Furcht über alle Nachbarn; und diese ganze Geschichte wurde bekannt auf dem ganzen Gebirge Judäas. 

66 Und alle, die es hörten, nahmen’s zu Herzen und sprachen: Was wird aus diesem Kindlein werden? Denn die Hand des Herrn war mit ihm. 

Der Lobgesang des Zacharias

67 Und sein Vater Zacharias wurde vom Heiligen Geist erfüllt, weissagte und sprach: 

68 Gelobt sei der Herr, der Gott Israels! Denn er hat besucht und erlöst sein Volk (Lu 7:16) 

69 und hat uns aufgerichtet ein Horn des Heils im Hause seines Dieners David – (1Sa 2:10; Ps 18:3; Ps 132:17) 

70 wie er vorzeiten geredet hat durch den Mund seiner heiligen Propheten –, 

71 dass er uns errettete von unsern Feinden und aus der Hand aller, die uns hassen, 

72 und Barmherzigkeit erzeigte unsern Vätern und gedächte an seinen heiligen Bund, (Ge 17:7) 

73 an den Eid, den er geschworen hat unserm Vater Abraham, uns zu geben, (Ge 22:16; Mic 7:20) 

74 dass wir, erlöst aus der Hand der Feinde, ihm dienten ohne Furcht 

75 unser Leben lang in Heiligkeit und Gerechtigkeit vor seinen Augen. (Tit 2:12; Tit 2:14) 

76 Und du, Kindlein, wirst Prophet des Höchsten heißen. Denn du wirst dem Herrn vorangehen, dass du seinen Weg bereitest (Mal 3:1) 

77 und Erkenntnis des Heils gebest seinem Volk in der Vergebung ihrer Sünden, (Jer 31:34)
