1At that time Joshua summoned the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh,2and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you and have obeyed my voice in all that I have commanded you. (Nu 32:20; De 3:18; Jos 1:16)3You have not forsaken your brothers these many days, down to this day, but have been careful to keep the charge of the Lord your God.4And now the Lord your God has given rest to your brothers, as he promised them. Therefore turn and go to your tents in the land where your possession lies, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. (Jos 11:23; Jos 13:8)5Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” (De 6:5; De 6:6; De 6:17; De 10:12; De 11:1; De 11:13; De 11:22; Jos 23:11)6So Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents. (Jos 14:13)7Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, but to the other half Joshua had given a possession beside their brothers in the land west of the Jordan. And when Joshua sent them away to their homes and blessed them, (Jos 17:5)8he said to them, “Go back to your tents with much wealth and with very much livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, and iron, and with much clothing. Divide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.” (Nu 31:27; 1Sa 30:24)9So the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home, parting from the people of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, their own land of which they had possessed themselves by command of the Lord through Moses. (Nu 32:1; Nu 32:26; Nu 32:29)
The Eastern Tribes’ Altar of Witness
10And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size.11And the people of Israel heard it said, “Behold, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built the altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the people of Israel.” (De 13:12)12And when the people of Israel heard of it, the whole assembly of the people of Israel gathered at Shiloh to make war against them. (Jud 20:1)13Then the people of Israel sent to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, (Ex 6:25; Nu 25:7; Jud 20:28)14and with him ten chiefs, one from each of the tribal families of Israel, every one of them the head of a family among the clans of Israel. (Nu 1:4)15And they came to the people of Reuben, the people of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, and they said to them,16“Thus says the whole congregation of the Lord, ‘What is this breach of faith that you have committed against the God of Israel in turning away this day from following the Lord by building yourselves an altar this day in rebellion against the Lord? (Le 17:8; Nu 14:9; De 12:13; Jos 22:18)17Have we not had enough of the sin at Peor from which even yet we have not cleansed ourselves, and for which there came a plague upon the congregation of the Lord, (Nu 25:3; De 4:3; Ps 106:28)18that you too must turn away this day from following the Lord? And if you too rebel against the Lord today then tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel. (Nu 16:22; Jos 22:16)19But now, if the land of your possession is unclean, pass over into the Lord’s land where the Lord’s tabernacle stands, and take for yourselves a possession among us. Only do not rebel against the Lord or make us as rebels by building for yourselves an altar other than the altar of the Lord our God. (Jos 18:1; Jos 22:16; Jos 22:18)20Did not Achan the son of Zerah break faith in the matter of the devoted things, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? And he did not perish alone for his iniquity.’” (Jos 7:1; Jos 7:5; Jos 22:18)21Then the people of Reuben, the people of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh said in answer to the heads of the families of Israel,22“The Mighty One, God, the Lord! The Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows; and let Israel itself know! If it was in rebellion or in breach of faith against the Lord, do not spare us today (De 10:17; 1Ki 8:39)23for building an altar to turn away from following the Lord. Or if we did so to offer burnt offerings or grain offerings or peace offerings on it, may the Lord himself take vengeance. (De 18:19; 1Sa 20:16)24No, but we did it from fear that in time to come your children might say to our children, ‘What have you to do with the Lord, the God of Israel? (Jos 4:6; Jos 4:21)25For the Lord has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you, you people of Reuben and people of Gad. You have no portion in the Lord.’ So your children might make our children cease to worship the Lord.26Therefore we said, ‘Let us now build an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice,27but to be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we do perform the service of the Lord in his presence with our burnt offerings and sacrifices and peace offerings, so your children will not say to our children in time to come, “You have no portion in the Lord.”’ (Ge 31:48; De 12:5; De 12:17; Jos 22:34; Jos 24:27)28And we thought, ‘If this should be said to us or to our descendants in time to come, we should say, “Behold, the copy of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us and you.”’ (Jos 22:27)29Far be it from us that we should rebel against the Lord and turn away this day from following the Lord by building an altar for burnt offering, grain offering, or sacrifice, other than the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tabernacle!” (Jos 22:16)30When Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation, the heads of the families of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the people of Manasseh spoke, it was good in their eyes. (Jos 22:13; Jos 22:33)31And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the people of Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is in our midst, because you have not committed this breach of faith against the Lord. Now you have delivered the people of Israel from the hand of the Lord.” (Le 26:11)32Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the chiefs, returned from the people of Reuben and the people of Gad in the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the people of Israel, and brought back word to them. (Jos 22:10; Jos 22:15)33And the report was good in the eyes of the people of Israel. And the people of Israel blessed God and spoke no more of making war against them to destroy the land where the people of Reuben and the people of Gad were settled. (Jos 22:30; 1Ch 29:20; Ne 8:6; Da 2:19; Lu 2:28)34The people of Reuben and the people of Gad called the altar Witness, “For,” they said, “it is a witness between us that the Lord is God.” (Jos 22:27)

(Heb 4:8)5Achtet aber nur genau darauf, dass ihr tut nach dem Gebot und Gesetz, das euch Mose, der Knecht des HERRN, geboten hat, dass ihr den HERRN, euren Gott, liebt und wandelt auf allen seinen Wegen und seine Gebote haltet und ihm anhangt und ihm dient von ganzem Herzen und von ganzer Seele. (De 6:5; De 10:12)6So segnete sie Josua und ließ sie gehen, und sie gingen zu ihren Zelten.7Dem einen halben Stamm Manasse hatte Mose Erbteil gegeben in Baschan, der andern Hälfte gab Josua ihr Erbteil unter ihren Brüdern diesseits des Jordans nach Westen zu. Und als er sie gehen ließ zu ihren Zelten und sie gesegnet hatte,8sprach er zu ihnen: Ihr kommt wieder heim mit großem Gut zu euren Zelten, mit sehr viel Vieh, Silber, Gold, Bronze, Eisen und Kleidern. So teilt nun die Beute eurer Feinde mit euren Brüdern. (Nu 31:27)
Der Altar am Jordan
9Da kehrten zurück die Söhne Ruben, die Söhne Gad und der halbe Stamm Manasse und gingen von den Israeliten weg aus Silo, das im Lande Kanaan liegt, dass sie ins Land Gilead zögen zum Lande ihres Erbes, das sie nach dem Befehl des HERRN durch Mose geerbt hatten.10Und da sie zu den Steinkreisen am Jordan kamen, die noch im Lande Kanaan liegen, bauten die Söhne Ruben, die Söhne Gad und der halbe Stamm Manasse dort am Jordan einen Altar, groß und ansehnlich.11Als aber die Israeliten sagen hörten: Siehe, die Söhne Ruben, die Söhne Gad und der halbe Stamm Manasse haben einen Altar gebaut an den Grenzen des Landes Kanaan, bei den Steinkreisen am Jordan, an der Grenze des Gebiets der Israeliten,12da versammelte sich die ganze Gemeinde der Israeliten in Silo, um gegen sie zu Felde zu ziehen.13Und die Israeliten sandten zu den Söhnen Ruben, den Söhnen Gad und dem halben Stamm Manasse ins Land Gilead den Pinhas, den Sohn Eleasars, den Priester, (Nu 25:7)14und mit ihm zehn Fürsten, aus jeder Sippe der Stämme Israels einen, und jeder war Haupt seiner Sippe über Tausend in Israel.15Und als sie zu den Söhnen Ruben, den Söhnen Gad und dem halben Stamm Manasse ins Land Gilead kamen, redeten sie mit ihnen und sprachen:16So lässt euch sagen die ganze Gemeinde des HERRN: Wie versündigt ihr euch an dem Gott Israels, dass ihr euch heute abkehrt von dem HERRN und dass ihr euch einen Altar baut und von dem HERRN abfallt? (De 12:13)17Ist’s nicht genug mit der Schuld von Peor, von der wir bis zum heutigen Tag noch nicht gereinigt sind und um derentwillen eine Plage unter die Gemeinde des HERRN kam? (Nu 25:1)18Und ihr wendet euch heute von dem HERRN weg. Dann wird es geschehen: Heute lehnt ihr euch auf gegen den HERRN, und morgen wird er über die ganze Gemeinde Israel zürnen.19Haltet ihr das Land eures Erbes für unrein, so kommt herüber ins Land, das dem HERRN gehört, wo die Wohnung des HERRN steht, und empfangt Erbteil unter uns; aber lehnt euch nicht auf gegen den HERRN und gegen uns, dass ihr euch einen Altar baut außer dem Altar des HERRN, unseres Gottes.20Versündigte sich nicht Achan, der Sohn Serachs, am Gebannten, und kam nicht der Zorn über die ganze Gemeinde Israel, obgleich er nur ein einzelner Mann war? Ging er nicht zugrunde wegen seiner Missetat? (Jos 7:1)21Da antworteten die Söhne Ruben und die Söhne Gad und der halbe Stamm Manasse und sagten zu den Obersten über Tausend in Israel:22Der starke Gott, der HERR, der starke Gott, der HERR, weiß es; so wisse es auch Israel: Fallen wir ab oder lehnen wir uns auf gegen den HERRN, so helfe er uns heute nicht!23Und wenn wir darum den Altar gebaut haben, dass wir uns von dem HERRN abwenden wollten, um Brandopfer oder Speisopfer darauf zu opfern oder Dankopfer darauf darzubringen, so möge es der HERR selbst untersuchen.24Haben wir es nicht vielmehr aus Sorge darum getan, dass wir dachten: Morgen könnten eure Söhne zu unsern Söhnen sagen: Was geht euch der HERR, der Gott Israels, an?25Der HERR hat den Jordan zur Grenze gesetzt zwischen uns und euch, ihr Söhne Ruben und Gad, ihr habt kein Teil am HERRN. Damit würden eure Nachkommen unsere Nachkommen von der Furcht des HERRN abwenden.26Darum sprachen wir: Lasst uns einen Altar bauen, nicht zum Brandopfer noch zum Schlachtopfer,27sondern damit er ein Zeuge sei zwischen uns und euch und unsern Nachkommen, dass wir dem HERRN Dienst tun wollen vor ihm mit unsern Brandopfern, Dankopfern und Schlachtopfern, und eure Söhne künftig nicht sagen dürfen zu unsern Söhnen: Ihr habt kein Teil an dem HERRN. (Jos 24:27)28Und wir sagten uns: Wenn sie morgen zu uns oder zu unsern Nachkommen so reden würden, so könnten wir sagen: Seht, wie der Altar des HERRN gebaut ist, den unsere Väter gemacht haben, nicht zum Brandopfer noch zum Schlachtopfer, sondern zum Zeugen zwischen uns und euch.29Das sei ferne von uns, dass wir uns auflehnen gegen den HERRN und uns heute von ihm abwenden und einen Altar bauen zum Brandopfer und zum Speisopfer und zum Schlachtopfer außer dem Altar des HERRN, unseres Gottes, der vor seiner Wohnung steht.30Da aber Pinhas, der Priester, und die Fürsten der Gemeinde, die Obersten über Tausend in Israel, die bei ihm waren, diese Worte hörten, die die Söhne Ruben, Gad und Manasse sagten, gefielen sie ihnen gut.31Und Pinhas, der Sohn Eleasars, der Priester, sprach zu den Söhnen Ruben, Gad und Manasse: Heute erkennen wir, dass der HERR unter uns ist, weil ihr euch nicht an dem HERRN versündigt habt mit dieser Tat. Nun habt ihr die Israeliten errettet aus der Hand des HERRN.32Da kehrten Pinhas, der Sohn Eleasars, der Priester, und die Obersten aus dem Land Gilead von den Söhnen Ruben und Gad ins Land Kanaan zu den Israeliten zurück und sagten’s ihnen an.33Das gefiel den Israeliten gut, und sie lobten Gott und sagten, dass sie nicht mehr gegen sie zu Felde ziehen wollten, um das Land zu verderben, darin die Söhne Ruben und Gad wohnten.34Und die Söhne Ruben und Gad nannten den Altar: »Zeuge ist er zwischen uns, dass der HERR Gott ist«.
