1Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten[1] a man with the help of the Lord.”2And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground.3In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, (Le 2:12; Nu 18:12)4and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, (Ex 13:12; Nu 18:17; Pr 3:9; Heb 11:4)5but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. (Pr 21:27)6The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen?7If you do well, will you not be accepted?[2] And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to[3] you, but you must rule over it.” (Ge 3:16; Ec 8:12; Isa 3:10; Ro 2:6)8Cain spoke to Abel his brother.[4] And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. (Mt 23:35; Heb 12:24; 1Jo 3:12; Jud 1:11)9Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?” (Joh 8:44)10And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. (Heb 12:24; Re 6:10)11And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. (Nu 35:33; De 27:24)12When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.”13Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear.[5] (Ge 19:15)14Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” (Ge 9:6; Nu 35:19; 2Ki 24:20; Job 15:20; Ps 51:11; Ps 143:7; Jer 52:3)15Then the Lord said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him. (Ps 79:12; Eze 9:4; Eze 9:6; Re 14:9; Re 14:11)16Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod,[6] east of Eden.17Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. When he built a city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch.18To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.19And Lamech took two wives. The name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.20Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have livestock.21His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.22Zillah also bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.23Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say: I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.24If Cain’s revenge is sevenfold, then Lamech’s is seventy-sevenfold.” (Ge 4:15)25And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed[7] for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”26To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the Lord. (Ge 5:6; 1Ch 1:1; Ps 116:17; Zep 3:9; Zec 13:9; Lu 3:38)

Und Abel wurde ein Schäfer, Kain aber wurde ein Ackermann.3Es begab sich aber nach etlicher Zeit, dass Kain dem HERRN Opfer brachte von den Früchten des Feldes. (Ex 23:19)4Und auch Abel brachte von den Erstlingen seiner Herde und von ihrem Fett. Und der HERR sah gnädig an Abel und sein Opfer, (Ex 34:19; Le 3:16)5aber Kain und sein Opfer sah er nicht gnädig an. Da ergrimmte Kain sehr und senkte finster seinen Blick. (Ex 33:19; Heb 11:4)6Da sprach der HERR zu Kain: Warum ergrimmst du? Und warum senkst du deinen Blick?7Ist’s nicht so: Wenn du fromm bist, so kannst du frei den Blick erheben. Bist du aber nicht fromm, so lauert die Sünde vor der Tür, und nach dir hat sie Verlangen; du aber herrsche über sie. (Ro 6:12; Ga 5:17)8Da sprach Kain zu seinem Bruder Abel: Lass uns aufs Feld gehen! Und es begab sich, als sie auf dem Felde waren, erhob sich Kain wider seinen Bruder Abel und schlug ihn tot. (1Jo 3:12; 1Jo 3:15)9Da sprach der HERR zu Kain: Wo ist dein Bruder Abel? Er sprach: Ich weiß nicht; soll ich meines Bruders Hüter sein? (Ge 3:9)10Er aber sprach: Was hast du getan? Die Stimme des Blutes deines Bruders schreit zu mir von der Erde. (Ps 9:13; Mt 23:35; Heb 12:24)11Und nun: Verflucht seist du auf der Erde, die ihr Maul hat aufgetan und deines Bruders Blut von deinen Händen empfangen. (Nu 35:33)12Wenn du den Acker bebauen wirst, soll er dir hinfort seinen Ertrag nicht geben. Unstet und flüchtig sollst du sein auf Erden.13Kain aber sprach zu dem HERRN: Meine Schuld ist zu schwer, als dass ich sie tragen könnte.[1]14Siehe, du treibst mich heute vom Acker, und ich muss mich vor deinem Angesicht verbergen und muss unstet und flüchtig sein auf Erden. So wird mir’s gehen, dass mich totschlägt, wer mich findet. (Job 15:20)15Aber der HERR sprach zu ihm: Nein, sondern wer Kain totschlägt, das soll siebenfältig gerächt werden. Und der HERR machte ein Zeichen an Kain, dass ihn niemand erschlüge, der ihn fände. (Eze 9:6; Re 7:3)16So ging Kain hinweg von dem Angesicht des HERRN und wohnte im Lande Nod[2], jenseits von Eden, gegen Osten.
Kains Nachkommen
17Und Kain erkannte seine Frau; die ward schwanger und gebar den Henoch. Und er baute eine Stadt, die nannte er nach seines Sohnes Namen Henoch.18Dem Henoch aber wurde Irad geboren, Irad zeugte Mehujaël, Mehujaël zeugte Metuschaël, Metuschaël zeugte Lamech.19Lamech aber nahm zwei Frauen, eine hieß Ada, die andere Zilla.20Und Ada gebar Jabal; von dem sind hergekommen, die in Zelten wohnen und Vieh halten.21Und sein Bruder hieß Jubal; von dem sind hergekommen alle Zither- und Flötenspieler.22Zilla aber gebar auch, nämlich den Tubal-Kain; der machte die Werkzeuge für alle Erz- und Eisenschmiede. Und die Schwester des Tubal-Kain war Naama.23Und Lamech sprach zu seinen Frauen: Ada und Zilla, höret meine Rede, ihr Frauen Lamechs, merkt auf, was ich sage: Einen Mann erschlug ich für meine Wunde und einen Jüngling für meine Beule.24Kain soll siebenmal gerächt werden, aber Lamech siebenundsiebzigmal. (Ge 15:1; Le 19:18; De 32:35; Mt 18:22)
Set und Enosch
25Adam erkannte abermals seine Frau, und sie gebar einen Sohn, den nannte sie Set: »Denn Gott hat mir einen andern Sohn gegeben für Abel, den Kain erschlagen hat.«26Und auch dem Set wurde ein Sohn geboren, den nannte er Enosch. Zu der Zeit fing man an, den Namen des HERRN anzurufen. (Ge 12:8)
