1And Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. (1Sa 2:10; Ps 9:14; Ps 13:5; Ps 20:5; Ps 35:9; Ps 75:10; Ps 89:17; Ps 89:24; Ps 92:10; Ps 112:9; Ps 148:14; Lu 1:46)2“There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. (Ex 15:11; De 32:30; Ps 86:8; Ps 89:6; Ps 89:8)3Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.4The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble bind on strength. (Ps 37:15; Ps 46:9; Ps 76:3)5Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. (Ps 113:9; Isa 54:1; Jer 15:9)6The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. (De 32:39)7The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. (Job 1:21; Job 5:11; Ps 75:7)8He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and on them he has set the world. (Job 36:7; Job 38:4; Ps 24:2; Ps 102:25; Ps 104:5; Ps 113:7; Da 4:17; Lu 1:52)9“He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail. (Ps 91:11; Ps 121:3; Pr 3:26)10The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.” (1Sa 2:1; 1Sa 7:10; 2Sa 22:14; Ps 2:9; Ps 18:13; Ps 89:24; Ps 96:10; Ps 96:13; Ps 98:9)11Then Elkanah went home to Ramah. And the boy[1] was ministering to the Lord in the presence of Eli the priest. (1Sa 1:19; 1Sa 2:18; 1Sa 3:1)
Eli’s Worthless Sons
12Now the sons of Eli were worthless men. They did not know the Lord. (Jud 2:10; 1Sa 1:16)13The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand,14and he would thrust it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. All that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there.15Moreover, before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give meat for the priest to roast, for he will not accept boiled meat from you but only raw.” (Le 3:5; Le 3:16; Le 7:23; Le 7:25; Le 7:31)16And if the man said to him, “Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish,” he would say, “No, you must give it now, and if not, I will take it by force.”17Thus the sin of the young men was very great in the sight of the Lord, for the men treated the offering of the Lord with contempt. (Ge 6:11; Mal 2:8)18Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy clothed with a linen ephod. (Ex 28:4; 1Sa 2:11; 1Sa 3:1; 2Sa 6:14; 1Ch 15:27)19And his mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. (1Sa 1:3)20Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “May the Lord give you children by this woman for the petition she asked of the Lord.” So then they would return to their home. (1Sa 1:28)21Indeed the Lord visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew in the presence of the Lord. (Ge 21:1; Jud 13:24; 1Sa 2:26; 1Sa 3:19; Lu 1:80; Lu 2:40)
Eli Rebukes His Sons
22Now Eli was very old, and he kept hearing all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who were serving at the entrance to the tent of meeting. (Ex 38:8)23And he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people.24No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the Lord spreading abroad.25If someone sins against a man, God will mediate for him, but if someone sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?” But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for it was the will of the Lord to put them to death. (Jos 11:20)26Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and also with man. (Lu 2:52)
The Lord Rejects Eli’s Household
27And there came a man of God to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the Lord, ‘Did I indeed reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt subject to the house of Pharaoh? (1Ki 13:1)28Did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel. (Ex 28:1; Le 2:3; Le 2:10; Le 6:16; Le 7:7; Le 7:34; Le 10:14; Nu 5:9; Nu 18:1; Nu 18:7; Nu 18:8; 1Sa 14:3; 1Sa 22:18)29Why then do you scorn[2] my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded for my dwelling, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’ (De 32:15)30Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,’ but now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. (Ex 27:21; Ex 29:9; Jer 18:9)31Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. (1Sa 4:11; 1Sa 4:18; 1Sa 4:20; 1Sa 22:18; 1Ki 2:27)32Then in distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity that shall be bestowed on Israel, and there shall not be an old man in your house forever. (Jud 18:30; 1Sa 4:11; Ps 78:59; Zec 8:4)33The only one of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep his[3] eyes out to grieve his heart, and all the descendants[4] of your house shall die by the sword of men.[5]34And this that shall come upon your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you: both of them shall die on the same day. (1Sa 4:11; 1Ki 13:3)35And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. And I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed forever. (1Sa 25:28; 2Sa 7:11; 2Sa 7:27; 2Sa 22:51; 1Ki 2:35; 1Ki 11:38; 1Ch 29:22; Ps 18:50; Ps 89:20)36And everyone who is left in your house shall come to implore him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread and shall say, “Please put me in one of the priests’ places, that I may eat a morsel of bread.”’”

(Ge 49:24; De 4:35; De 32:4; De 32:18; 2Sa 7:22; Ps 18:32; Ps 18:47; Ps 28:1; Isa 43:11; Isa 45:5; Isa 45:21)3Lasst euer großes Rühmen und Trotzen, freches Reden gehe nicht aus eurem Munde; denn der HERR ist ein Gott, der es merkt, und von ihm werden Taten gewogen.4Der Bogen der Starken ist zerbrochen, und die Schwachen sind umgürtet mit Stärke.5Die da satt waren, müssen um Brot dienen, und die Hunger litten, hungert nicht mehr. Die Unfruchtbare hat sieben geboren, und die viele Kinder hatte, welkt dahin. (Isa 54:1)6Der HERR tötet und macht lebendig, führt ins Totenreich und wieder herauf. (De 32:39; Ps 71:20)7Der HERR macht arm und macht reich; er erniedrigt und erhöht. (Ps 75:8; Eze 17:24)8Er hebt auf den Dürftigen aus dem Staub und erhöht den Armen aus der Asche, dass er ihn setze unter die Fürsten und den Thron der Ehre erben lasse. Denn der Welt Grundfesten sind des HERRN, und er hat die Erde darauf gesetzt. (Ps 113:7)9Er wird behüten die Füße seiner Heiligen, aber die Frevler sollen zunichtewerden in Finsternis; denn viel Macht hilft doch niemand. (Ps 33:16)10Die mit dem HERRN hadern, müssen zugrunde gehen. Über ihnen wird er donnern im Himmel. Der HERR wird richten der Welt Enden. Er wird Macht geben seinem Könige und erhöhen das Horn seines Gesalbten.11Und Elkana ging heim nach Rama in sein Haus; der Knabe aber war des HERRN Diener vor dem Priester Eli.
Die Bosheit der Söhne Elis
12Aber die Söhne Elis waren ruchlos. Sie fragten nicht nach dem HERRN13noch nach dem, was dem Priester zustand vom Volk. Wenn jemand ein Opfer bringen wollte, so kam des Priesters Diener, wenn das Fleisch kochte, und hatte eine Gabel mit drei Zacken in seiner Hand (Le 7:11; Le 7:28; De 18:3)14und stieß in den Tiegel oder Kessel oder Pfanne oder Topf, und was er mit der Gabel hervorzog, das nahm der Priester für sich. So taten sie allen in Israel, die dorthin kamen nach Silo.15Desgleichen, ehe sie das Fett in Rauch aufgehen ließen, kam des Priesters Diener und sprach zu dem, der das Opfer brachte: Gib mir Fleisch für den Priester zum Braten, denn er will nicht gekochtes Fleisch von dir nehmen, sondern rohes. (Le 3:3)16Wenn dann jemand zu ihm sagte: Lass erst das Fett in Rauch aufgehen und nimm dann, was dein Herz begehrt, so sprach er zu ihm: Du sollst mir’s jetzt geben; wenn nicht, so nehme ich’s mit Gewalt.17So war die Sünde der jungen Männer sehr groß vor dem HERRN, denn sie verachteten das Opfer des HERRN.18Samuel aber war ein Diener vor dem HERRN; und der Knabe war umgürtet mit einem leinenen Priesterschurz. (Ex 28:4)19Dazu machte ihm seine Mutter ein kleines Oberkleid und brachte es ihm Jahr für Jahr, wenn sie mit ihrem Mann hinaufging, um das jährliche Opfer darzubringen.20Und Eli segnete Elkana und seine Frau und sprach: Der HERR gebe dir Kinder von dieser Frau anstelle dessen, den sie vom HERRN erbeten hat. Und sie gingen zurück an ihren Ort.21Und der HERR suchte Hanna heim, dass sie schwanger ward, und sie gebar drei Söhne und zwei Töchter. Aber der Knabe Samuel wuchs heran bei dem HERRN.22Eli aber war sehr alt geworden. Und immer, wenn er von all dem hörte, was seine Söhne ganz Israel antaten und dass sie bei den Frauen schliefen, die vor dem Eingang der Stiftshütte dienten, (Ex 38:8)23sprach er zu ihnen: Warum tut ihr solches? Denn ich höre diese bösen Dinge, die ihr tut, vom ganzen Volk.24Nicht doch, meine Söhne! Denn das Gerücht, von dem ich reden höre in des HERRN Volk, ist nicht gut.25Wenn jemand gegen einen Menschen sündigt, so kann es Gott entscheiden. Wenn aber jemand gegen den HERRN sündigt, wer soll es dann für ihn entscheiden? Aber sie gehorchten der Stimme ihres Vaters nicht; denn der HERR war willens, sie zu töten.26Aber der Knabe Samuel nahm immer mehr zu an Alter und Gunst bei dem HERRN und bei den Menschen. (1Sa 3:19; Lu 2:52)
Das kommende Gericht über das Haus Eli
27Es kam aber ein Mann Gottes zu Eli und sprach zu ihm: So spricht der HERR: Ich habe mich offenbart dem Hause deines Vaters, als sie noch in Ägypten dem Hause des Pharao gehörten, (1Sa 9:6; 1Ki 13:1; 2Ki 1:9)28und hab’s mir erwählt aus allen Stämmen Israels zum Priestertum, dass sie auf meinem Altar opfern und Räucherwerk verbrennen und den Priesterschurz vor mir tragen, und ich habe dem Hause deines Vaters alle Feueropfer Israels gegeben. (Ex 30:7; Nu 18:8; De 18:1)29Warum tretet ihr denn mit Füßen meine Schlachtopfer und Speisopfer, die ich für meine Wohnung geboten habe? Und du ehrst deine Söhne mehr als mich, dass ihr euch mästet von dem Besten aller Opfer meines Volkes Israel.30Darum spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: Ich hatte gesagt, dein Haus und deines Vaters Haus sollten immerdar vor mir einhergehen. Aber nun spricht der HERR: Das sei ferne von mir! Sondern wer mich ehrt, den will ich auch ehren; wer aber mich verachtet, der soll wieder verachtet werden. (Ge 12:3; Ex 28:1; Mal 3:16)31Siehe, es wird die Zeit kommen, dass ich deinen Arm und den Arm des Hauses deines Vaters abhauen will, dass es keinen Alten geben wird in deinem Hause (1Ki 2:27)32und dass du voll Neid sehen wirst auf all das Gute, das Israel geschehen wird, und es wird niemand alt werden in deinem Hause immerdar.33Doch nicht einen jeden will ich dir von meinem Altar ausrotten, dass nicht deine Augen verschmachten und deine Seele sich gräme. Aber der größte Teil deines Hauses soll sterben, wenn sie Männer geworden sind.34Und das soll dir ein Zeichen sein, das über deine beiden Söhne, Hofni und Pinhas, kommen wird; an einem Tag werden sie beide sterben. (1Sa 4:11)35Ich aber will mir einen treuen Priester erwecken, der wird tun, wie es meinem Herzen und meiner Seele gefällt. Dem will ich ein beständiges Haus bauen, dass er vor meinem Gesalbten wandle immerdar. (1Sa 25:28; 1Ki 11:38; Heb 5:4)36Und wer übrig ist von deinem Hause, der wird kommen und vor jenem niederfallen um ein Silberstück oder um ein Brot und wird sagen: Lass mich doch Anteil haben am Priesteramt, dass ich einen Bissen Brot zu essen habe.
