The First Beast

1 And I saw a beast rising out of the sea, with ten horns and seven heads, with ten diadems on its horns and blasphemous names on its heads. (Da 7:3; Re 12:3; Re 17:3) 2 And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear’s, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. (Da 7:4; Da 7:5; Da 7:6; Lu 4:6; Re 13:4; Re 13:11; Re 16:10)

3 One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. (Re 17:8) 4 And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?” (Re 18:18) 5 And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. 6 It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling,^[1] that is, those who dwell in heaven. 7 Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them.^[2] And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, (Da 7:21; Re 11:7; Re 12:17) 8 and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. 9 If anyone has an ear, let him hear: (Re 2:7) 10 If anyone is to be taken captive, to captivity he goes; if anyone is to be slain with the sword, with the sword must he be slain. Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints. (Ge 9:6; Isa 33:1; Jer 15:2; Jer 43:11; Re 14:12)

The Second Beast

11 Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. (Re 13:1; Re 13:14; Re 16:13) 12 It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence,^[3] and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed. (Re 13:3) 13 It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, (De 13:1; 1Ki 18:38; 2Ki 1:10; 2Ki 1:12; Mt 24:24; Lu 9:54; 2Th 2:9; Re 16:14; Re 19:20; Re 20:9)

14 and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of^[4] the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. (Re 12:9; Re 13:3; Re 13:12) 15 And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain. 16 Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave,^[5] to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, (Ga 6:17; Re 7:3) 17 so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. (Re 14:11; Re 15:2) 18 This calls for wisdom: let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man, and his number is 666.^[6] (Re 17:9; Re 21:17)

Und die ganze Erde wunderte sich über das Tier, 4 und sie beteten den Drachen an, weil er dem Tier die Macht gab, und beteten das Tier an und sprachen: Wer ist dem Tier gleich und wer kann mit ihm kämpfen? 5 Und es wurde ihm ein Maul gegeben, zu reden große Dinge und Lästerungen, und ihm wurde Macht gegeben, es zu tun zweiundvierzig Monate lang. (Ge 9:6; Jer 15:2; Re 14:12) 11 Und ich sah ein zweites Tier aufsteigen aus der Erde; das hatte zwei Hörner wie ein Lamm und redete wie ein Drache. 12 Und es übt alle Macht des ersten Tieres aus vor seinen Augen und es macht, dass die Erde und die darauf wohnen, das erste Tier anbeten, dessen tödliche Wunde heil geworden war. 13 Und es tut große Zeichen, sodass es auch Feuer vom Himmel auf die Erde fallen lässt vor den Augen der Menschen; (1Ki 18:38; Mt 24:24; 2Th 2:9) 14 und es verführt, die auf Erden wohnen, durch die Zeichen, die zu tun vor den Augen des Tieres ihm Macht gegeben ist; und sagt denen, die auf Erden wohnen, dass sie ein Bild machen sollen dem Tier, das die Wunde vom Schwert hatte und lebendig geworden war. 15 Und es wurde ihm gegeben, Geist zu verleihen dem Bild des Tieres, damit das Bild des Tieres reden und machen könne, dass alle, die das Bild des Tieres nicht anbeteten, getötet würden. 16 Und es macht, dass sie allesamt, die Kleinen und Großen, die Reichen und Armen, die Freien und Sklaven, sich ein Zeichen machen an ihre rechte Hand oder an ihre Stirn 17 und dass niemand kaufen oder verkaufen kann, wenn er nicht das Zeichen hat, nämlich den Namen des Tieres oder die Zahl seines Namens. 18 Hier ist Weisheit! Wer Verstand hat, der überlege die Zahl des Tieres; denn es ist die Zahl eines Menschen, und seine Zahl ist sechshundertsechsundsechzig^[3]. (Re 15:2)

1 Puis je vis monter de la mer une bête qui avait sept têtes et dix cornes, et sur ses cornes dix diadèmes, et sur ses têtes des noms blasphématoires. 2 La bête que je vis ressemblait à un léopard; ses pattes étaient comme celles d'un ours et sa gueule comme une gueule de lion. Le dragon lui donna sa puissance, son trône et une grande autorité. 3 L'une de ses têtes était comme blessée à mort, mais sa blessure mortelle fut guérie. Remplie d'admiration, la terre entière suivit alors la bête. 4 On adora le dragon parce qu'il avait donné l'autorité à la bête; on adora aussi la bête en disant: «Qui est semblable à la bête et qui peut combattre contre elle?» 5 Il lui fut donné une bouche qui proférait des paroles arrogantes et des blasphèmes, et elle reçut le pouvoir de faire la guerre pendant 42 mois. 6 Elle ouvrit la bouche pour proférer des blasphèmes contre Dieu, pour insulter son nom et son tabernacle, ceux qui habitent dans le ciel. 7 Il lui fut permis de faire la guerre aux saints et de les vaincre. Elle reçut l'autorité sur toute tribu, tout peuple, toute langue et toute nation, 8 et tous les habitants de la terre l'adoreront, tous ceux dont le nom n'a pas été inscrit dans le livre de vie de l'Agneau offert en sacrifice, et ce dès la création du monde. 9 Si quelqu'un a des oreilles, qu'il écoute. 10 Si quelqu'un fait des prisonniers, il sera emmené prisonnier. Si quelqu'un tue par l'épée, il doit être tué par l'épée. C'est ici que sont nécessaires la persévérance et la foi des saints. 11 Ensuite je vis monter de la terre une autre bête; elle avait deux cornes semblables à celles d'un agneau, mais elle parlait comme un dragon. 12 Elle exerçait toute l'autorité de la première bête en sa présence, et elle obligeait la terre et ses habitants à adorer la première bête, celle dont la blessure mortelle avait été guérie. 13 Elle accomplissait de grands signes miraculeux, jusqu'à faire descendre le feu du ciel sur la terre, à la vue des hommes. 14 Elle égarait les habitants de la terre par les signes qu'il lui était donné d'accomplir en présence de la bête; elle leur disait de faire une image de la bête qui avait été blessée par l'épée et qui avait survécu. 15 Elle reçut le pouvoir d'animer l'image de la bête, afin que cette image puisse parler et faire tuer tous ceux qui ne l'adoreraient pas. 16 Elle fit en sorte qu'on impose à tous les hommes, petits et grands, riches et pauvres, libres et esclaves, une marque sur leur main droite ou sur leur front. 17 Ainsi, personne ne pouvait acheter ni vendre sans avoir la marque, c'est-à-dire le nom de la bête ou le nombre de son nom. 18 Il faut ici de la sagesse. Que celui qui a de l'intelligence déchiffre le nombre de la bête, car c'est un nombre d'homme. Son nombre est 666.
