6Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. (Mt 27:15; Lu 23:18; Joh 18:39; Joh 19:16)7And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. (Ac 3:14; Ac 5:36)8And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them.9And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”10For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. (Joh 12:19)11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.12And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” (Joh 19:15)13And they cried out again, “Crucify him.”14And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” (Lu 23:41; Joh 8:46)15So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged[1] Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. Jesus Is Mocked
16And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters),[2] and they called together the whole battalion.[3] (Mt 26:3; Mt 27:27; Joh 18:28; Joh 18:33; Joh 19:2; Joh 19:9; Ac 10:1; Ac 23:35; Php 1:13)17And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. (Lu 23:11; Re 18:12; Re 18:16)18And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” (Mr 15:2)19And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. (Mt 8:2; Mr 14:65)20And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him. (Isa 53:7; Mr 10:34; Mr 15:17)
The Crucifixion
21And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. (Mt 27:32; Lu 23:26; Joh 19:17)22And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). (Mt 27:33; Lu 23:32; Lu 23:44; Joh 19:17; Joh 19:23; Joh 19:28)23And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. (Mt 2:11; Joh 19:39)24And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. (Ps 22:18)25And it was the third hour[4] when they crucified him. (Joh 19:14)26And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” (Mr 15:2)27And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.[5] (Mr 10:37; Joh 18:40)29And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, (Job 16:4; Ps 22:7; Ps 35:25; Ps 40:15; Ps 109:25; Jer 18:16; La 1:12; La 2:15; Mr 14:58)30save yourself, and come down from the cross!”31So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. (Mt 26:53; Lu 4:23; Joh 10:18)32Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him. The Death of Jesus
33And when the sixth hour[6] had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.[7]34And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Ps 22:1; Heb 5:7)35And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”36And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” (Ru 2:14; Ps 69:21)37And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. (Mr 15:34; Joh 10:18)38And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. (Ex 26:31; 2Ch 3:14)39And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he[8] breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son[9] of God!” (Mt 27:43; Mt 27:54; Lu 23:47; Lu 23:49)40There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. (Ps 38:11; Mt 27:56; Mr 16:1; Lu 8:2; Joh 19:25)41When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem. (Mr 15:40; Lu 2:4)
Jesus Is Buried
42And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, (Mt 27:57; Mt 27:62; Lu 23:50; Joh 19:38)43Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. (Lu 2:25; Lu 2:38; Ac 13:50; Ac 17:12)44Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.[10] And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. (Mr 15:39)45And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. (Mr 15:44)46And Joseph[11] bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. (Isa 22:16; Isa 53:9; Mr 14:51; Mr 16:4; Joh 11:38)47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid. (Mr 15:40)

Er aber antwortete ihm und sprach: Du sagst es.3Und die Hohenpriester beschuldigten ihn hart.4Pilatus aber fragte ihn abermals und sprach: Antwortest du nichts? Siehe, wie hart sie dich verklagen!5Jesus aber antwortete nichts mehr, sodass sich Pilatus verwunderte. (Isa 53:7; Mr 14:61)
Jesu Verurteilung und Verspottung
6Er pflegte ihnen aber zum Fest einen Gefangenen loszugeben, welchen sie erbaten.7Es war aber einer, genannt Barabbas, gefangen mit den Aufrührern, die beim Aufruhr einen Mord begangen hatten.8Und das Volk ging hinauf und bat, dass er tue, wie er ihnen zu tun pflegte.9Pilatus aber antwortete ihnen: Wollt ihr, dass ich euch den König der Juden losgebe?10Denn er erkannte, dass ihn die Hohenpriester aus Neid überantwortet hatten.11Aber die Hohenpriester wiegelten das Volk auf, dass er ihnen viel lieber den Barabbas losgebe.12Pilatus aber antwortete wiederum und sprach zu ihnen: Was wollt ihr dann, dass ich tue mit dem, den ihr den König der Juden nennt?13Sie schrien abermals: Kreuzige ihn!14Pilatus aber sprach zu ihnen: Was hat er denn Böses getan? Aber sie schrien noch viel mehr: Kreuzige ihn!15Pilatus aber wollte dem Volk Genüge tun und gab ihnen Barabbas los und ließ Jesus geißeln und überantwortete ihn, dass er gekreuzigt würde.16Die Soldaten aber führten ihn hinein in den Palast, das ist ins Prätorium, und riefen die ganze Kohorte[1] zusammen17und zogen ihm einen Purpurmantel an und flochten eine Dornenkrone und setzten sie ihm auf18und fingen an, ihn zu grüßen: Gegrüßet seist du, der Juden König!19Und sie schlugen ihn mit einem Rohr auf das Haupt und spien ihn an und fielen auf die Knie und huldigten ihm. Jesu Kreuzigung und Tod
20Und als sie ihn verspottet hatten, zogen sie ihm den Purpurmantel aus und zogen ihm seine Kleider an. Und sie führten ihn hinaus, dass sie ihn kreuzigten.21Und zwangen einen, der vorüberging, Simon von Kyrene, der vom Feld kam, den Vater des Alexander und des Rufus, dass er ihm das Kreuz trage.22Und sie brachten ihn zu der Stätte Golgatha, das heißt übersetzt: Schädelstätte.23Und sie gaben ihm Myrrhe im Wein zu trinken; aber er nahm’s nicht. (Pr 31:6; Mr 14:25)24Und sie kreuzigten ihn. Und sie teilten seine Kleider und warfen das Los darum, wer was bekommen sollte. (Ps 22:19)25Und es war die dritte Stunde, als sie ihn kreuzigten.26Und es stand geschrieben, welche Schuld man ihm gab, nämlich: Der König der Juden.27-28Und sie kreuzigten mit ihm zwei Räuber, einen zu seiner Rechten und einen zu seiner Linken.[2] (Isa 53:12; Mr 14:48)29Und die vorübergingen, lästerten ihn und schüttelten ihre Köpfe und sprachen: Ha, der du den Tempel abbrichst und baust ihn auf in drei Tagen, (Ps 22:8; Mr 14:58)30hilf dir nun selber und steig herab vom Kreuz!31Desgleichen verspotteten ihn auch die Hohenpriester untereinander samt den Schriftgelehrten und sprachen: Er hat andern geholfen und kann sich selber nicht helfen. (Mr 5:34; Mr 6:56)32Der Christus, der König von Israel, er steige nun vom Kreuz, damit wir sehen und glauben. Und die mit ihm gekreuzigt waren, schmähten ihn auch. (Joh 4:48)33Und zur sechsten Stunde kam eine Finsternis über das ganze Land bis zur neunten Stunde. (Am 8:9)34Und zu der neunten Stunde rief Jesus laut: Eli, Eli, lama asabtani?[3] Das heißt übersetzt: Mein Gott, mein Gott, warum[4] hast du mich verlassen? (Ps 22:2)35Und einige, die dabeistanden, als sie das hörten, sprachen sie: Siehe, er ruft den Elia.36Da lief einer und füllte einen Schwamm mit Essig, steckte ihn auf ein Rohr, gab ihm zu trinken und sprach: Halt, lasst uns sehen, ob Elia komme und ihn herabnehme! (Ps 69:22)37Aber Jesus schrie laut und verschied.38Und der Vorhang im Tempel zerriss in zwei Stücke von oben an bis unten aus. (Ex 26:31; 2Ch 3:14)39Der Hauptmann aber, der dabeistand, ihm gegenüber, und sah, dass er so verschied, sprach: Wahrlich, dieser Mensch ist Gottes Sohn gewesen! (Mr 1:11; Mr 14:61)40Und es waren auch Frauen da, die von ferne zuschauten, unter ihnen Maria Magdalena und Maria, die Mutter Jakobus des Kleinen und des Joses, und Salome,41die ihm nachgefolgt waren, als er in Galiläa war, und ihm gedient hatten, und viele andere Frauen, die mit ihm hinauf nach Jerusalem gegangen waren. (Lu 8:2; Joh 12:26)
Jesu Grablegung
42Und als es schon Abend wurde und weil Rüsttag war, das ist der Tag vor dem Sabbat, (De 21:22)43kam Josef von Arimathäa, ein angesehener Ratsherr, der auch auf das Reich Gottes wartete; der wagte es und ging hinein zu Pilatus und bat um den Leichnam Jesu.44Pilatus aber wunderte sich, dass er schon tot war, und rief den Hauptmann und fragte ihn, ob er schon länger gestorben wäre.45Und als er’s erkundet hatte von dem Hauptmann, überließ er Josef den Leichnam.46Und der kaufte ein Leinentuch und nahm ihn ab vom Kreuz und wickelte ihn in das Tuch und legte ihn in ein Grab, das war in einen Felsen gehauen, und wälzte einen Stein vor des Grabes Tür.47Aber Maria Magdalena und Maria, die Mutter des Joses, sahen, wo er hingelegt war.

Après avoir attaché Jésus, ils l'emmenèrent et le livrèrent à Pilate.2Pilate l'interrogea: «Es-tu le roi des Juifs?» Jésus lui répondit: «Tu le dis.»3Les chefs des prêtres portaient contre lui beaucoup d'accusations.4Pilate l'interrogea de nouveau: «Ne réponds-tu rien? Vois tous les témoignages qu'ils portent contre toi.»5Mais Jésus ne répondit plus rien, ce qui étonna Pilate.6A chaque fête, il relâchait un prisonnier, celui que le peuple réclamait.7Il y avait en prison le dénommé Barabbas avec ses complices, pour un meurtre qu'ils avaient commis lors d'une émeute.8La foule se mit à demander à grands cris ce qu'il avait l'habitude de leur accorder.9Pilate leur répondit: «Voulez-vous que je vous relâche le roi des Juifs?»10En effet, il savait que c'était par jalousie que les chefs des prêtres avaient fait arrêter Jésus.11Cependant, les chefs des prêtres excitèrent la foule afin que Pilate leur relâche plutôt Barabbas.12Pilate reprit la parole et leur dit: «Que voulez-vous donc que je fasse de celui que vous appelez le roi des Juifs?»13Ils crièrent de nouveau: «Crucifie-le!»14«Quel mal a-t-il fait?» leur dit Pilate. Ils crièrent encore plus fort: «Crucifie-le!»15Voulant satisfaire la foule, Pilate leur relâcha Barabbas et, après avoir fait fouetter Jésus, il le livra à la crucifixion.16Les soldats conduisirent Jésus à l'intérieur de la cour, c'est-à-dire dans le prétoire, et ils rassemblèrent toute la troupe.17Ils lui mirent un habit pourpre et posèrent sur sa tête une couronne d'épines qu'ils avaient tressée.18Puis ils se mirent à le saluer: «Salut, roi des Juifs!»19Ils lui frappaient la tête avec un roseau, crachaient sur lui et se mettaient à genoux pour se prosterner devant lui.20Après s'être ainsi moqués de lui, ils lui enlevèrent l'habit pourpre, lui remirent ses vêtements et l'emmenèrent pour le crucifier.
Crucifixion et mort de Jésus
21Ils forcèrent un passant qui revenait des champs à porter la croix de Jésus. C'était Simon de Cyrène, le père d'Alexandre et de Rufus.22Ils conduisirent Jésus à l'endroit appelé Golgotha, ce qui signifie «lieu du crâne».23Ils lui donnèrent [à boire] du vin mêlé de myrrhe, mais il ne le prit pas.24Ils le crucifièrent, puis ils se partagèrent ses vêtements en tirant au sort pour savoir ce que chacun aurait.25C'était neuf heures du matin quand ils le crucifièrent.26L'inscription indiquant le motif de sa condamnation portait ces mots: «Le roi des Juifs».27Ils crucifièrent avec lui deux brigands, l'un à sa droite et l'autre à sa gauche.28[Ainsi fut accompli ce que dit l'Ecriture: Il a été compté parmi les criminels.[1]] (Isa 53:12)29Les passants l'insultaient et secouaient la tête en disant: «Hé! toi qui détruis le temple et qui le reconstruis en trois jours,30sauve-toi toi-même, descends de la croix!»31Les chefs des prêtres, avec les spécialistes de la loi, se moquaient aussi entre eux et disaient: «Il en a sauvé d'autres et il ne peut pas se sauver lui-même!32Que le Messie, le roi d'Israël, descende maintenant de la croix, afin que nous voyions et que nous croyions!» Ceux qui étaient crucifiés avec lui l'insultaient aussi.33A midi, il y eut des ténèbres sur tout le pays, jusqu'à trois heures de l'après-midi.34Et à trois heures de l'après-midi, Jésus s'écria d'une voix forte: «Eloï, Eloï, lama sabachthani?» – ce qui signifie: Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m'as-tu abandonné?[2] (Ps 22:2)35Quelques-uns de ceux qui étaient là, après l'avoir entendu, disaient: «Voici qu'il appelle Elie.»36Et l'un d'eux courut remplir une éponge de vinaigre; il la fixa à un roseau et lui donna à boire en disant: «Laissez donc, voyons si Elie viendra le descendre de là.»37Cependant, Jésus poussa un grand cri et expira.38Le voile du temple[3] se déchira en deux, depuis le haut jusqu'en bas.39Quand l'officier romain qui se tenait en face de Jésus [entendit son cri et] le vit expirer de cette manière, il dit: «Cet homme était vraiment le Fils de Dieu.»40Il y avait aussi des femmes qui regardaient de loin. Parmi elles étaient Marie de Magdala, Marie, mère de Jacques le jeune et de Joses, ainsi que Salomé,41qui le suivaient et le servaient lorsqu'il était en Galilée, et beaucoup d'autres femmes qui étaient aussi montées avec lui à Jérusalem.
Mise au tombeau du corps de Jésus
42Le soir venu, comme c'était le jour de la préparation, c'est-à-dire la veille du sabbat,43Joseph d'Arimathée arriva. C'était un membre éminent du conseil, qui attendait lui aussi le royaume de Dieu. Il osa se rendre vers Pilate pour demander le corps de Jésus.44Pilate s'étonna qu'il soit déjà mort; il fit venir l'officier et lui demanda si Jésus était mort depuis longtemps.45Une fois renseigné par l'officier, il fit remettre le corps à Joseph.46Joseph acheta un drap de lin, descendit Jésus de la croix, l'enveloppa dans le drap de lin et le déposa dans un tombeau taillé dans la roche. Puis il roula une pierre à l'entrée du tombeau.47Marie de Magdala et Marie la mère de Joses regardaient où l'on déposait Jésus.
