Joseph’s Brothers Return to Egypt

1 Now the famine was severe in the land. (Ge 41:54; Ge 41:57) 2 And when they had eaten the grain that they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little food.” 3 But Judah said to him, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.’ (Ge 42:20; Ge 44:23) 4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food. 5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’” 6 Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly as to tell the man that you had another brother?” 7 They replied, “The man questioned us carefully about ourselves and our kindred, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ What we told him was in answer to these questions. Could we in any way know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?” 8 And Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy with me, and we will arise and go, that we may live and not die, both we and you and also our little ones. (Ge 42:2) 9 I will be a pledge of his safety. From my hand you shall require him. If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever. (Ge 42:37; Ge 44:32) 10 If we had not delayed, we would now have returned twice.” 11 Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry a present down to the man, a little balm and a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds. (Ge 37:25) 12 Take double the money with you. Carry back with you the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight. (Ge 42:25; Ge 42:27; Ge 42:35) 13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again to the man. 14 May God Almighty^[1] grant you mercy before the man, and may he send back your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” (Ge 17:1; Ge 42:36; Ne 1:11) 15 So the men took this present, and they took double the money with them, and Benjamin. They arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph. 16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make ready, for the men are to dine with me at noon.” (Ge 24:2; Ge 39:4; Ge 43:19; Ge 44:1; Ge 44:4)

17 The man did as Joseph told him and brought the men to Joseph’s house. 18 And the men were afraid because they were brought to Joseph’s house, and they said, “It is because of the money, which was replaced in our sacks the first time, that we are brought in, so that he may assault us and fall upon us to make us servants and seize our donkeys.” 19 So they went up to the steward of Joseph’s house and spoke with him at the door of the house, 20 and said, “Oh, my lord, we came down the first time to buy food. (Ge 42:3; Ge 42:10; Ge 44:18) 21 And when we came to the lodging place we opened our sacks, and there was each man’s money in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. So we have brought it again with us, (Ge 42:27) 22 and we have brought other money down with us to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.” 23 He replied, “Peace to you, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has put treasure in your sacks for you. I received your money.” Then he brought Simeon out to them. 24 And when the man had brought the men into Joseph’s house and given them water, and they had washed their feet, and when he had given their donkeys fodder, (Ge 18:4) 25 they prepared the present for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there. (Ge 43:11) 26 When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the present that they had with them and bowed down to him to the ground. (Ge 37:5; Ge 42:6) 27 And he inquired about their welfare and said, “Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?” (Ge 42:11; Ge 42:13) 28 They said, “Your servant our father is well; he is still alive.” And they bowed their heads and prostrated themselves. (Ge 43:26) 29 And he lifted up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? God be gracious to you, my son!” (Ge 35:18; Ge 43:27) 30 Then Joseph hurried out, for his compassion grew warm for his brother, and he sought a place to weep. And he entered his chamber and wept there. (Ge 42:24; 1Ki 3:26; Jer 31:20) 31 Then he washed his face and came out. And controlling himself he said, “Serve the food.” (Ge 45:1) 32 They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. (Ge 46:34; Ex 8:26) 33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth. And the men looked at one another in amazement. 34 Portions were taken to them from Joseph’s table, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were merry^[2] with him. (Ge 45:22; 2Sa 11:8)

1 Die Hungersnot aber drückte das Land. 2 Und als verzehrt war, was sie an Getreide aus Ägypten gebracht hatten, sprach ihr Vater zu ihnen: Zieht wieder hin und kauft uns ein wenig Getreide. 3 Da antwortete ihm Juda und sprach: Der Mann schärfte uns das hart ein und sprach: Ihr sollt mein Angesicht nicht sehen, es sei denn euer Bruder mit euch. (Ge 42:15; Ge 42:34) 4 Willst du nun unsern Bruder mit uns senden, so wollen wir hinabziehen und dir zu essen kaufen. 5 Willst du ihn aber nicht senden, so ziehen wir nicht hinab. Denn der Mann hat zu uns gesagt: Ihr sollt mein Angesicht nicht sehen, euer Bruder sei denn mit euch. 6 Israel sprach: Warum habt ihr so übel an mir getan, dass ihr dem Mann sagtet, dass ihr noch einen Bruder habt? 7 Sie antworteten: Der Mann forschte so genau nach uns und unserer Verwandtschaft und sprach: Lebt euer Vater noch? Habt ihr auch noch einen Bruder? Da antworteten wir ihm, wie er uns fragte. Wie konnten wir wissen, dass er sagen würde: Bringt euren Bruder mit herab? (Ge 42:7) 8 Da sprach Juda zu Israel, seinem Vater: Lass den Knaben mit mir ziehen, dass wir uns aufmachen und reisen und leben und nicht sterben, wir und du und unsere Kinder. 9 Ich will Bürge für ihn sein; von meiner Hand sollst du ihn fordern. Wenn ich ihn dir nicht wiederbringe und vor deine Augen stelle, so will ich mein Leben lang die Schuld tragen. 10 Denn wenn wir nicht gezögert hätten, wären wir wohl schon zweimal wiedergekommen. 11 Da sprach Israel, ihr Vater, zu ihnen: Wenn es denn so ist, wohlan, so tut’s und nehmt von des Landes besten Früchten in eure Säcke und bringt dem Manne Geschenke hinab, ein wenig Balsam und Honig, Harz und Myrrhe, Pistazien und Mandeln. (Pr 18:16) 12 Nehmt auch doppelt so viel Geld mit euch. Das Geld, das ihr obenauf in euren Säcken wiederbekommen habt, bringt wieder hin. Vielleicht ist da ein Irrtum geschehen. (Ge 42:27; Ge 42:35) 13 Dazu nehmt euren Bruder, macht euch auf und geht wieder zu dem Manne. 14 Aber der allmächtige Gott gebe euch Barmherzigkeit vor dem Manne, dass er mit euch ziehen lasse euren andern Bruder und Benjamin. Ich aber muss sein wie einer, der seiner Kinder ganz und gar beraubt ist. (Ge 42:36) 15 Da nahmen sie diese Geschenke und das doppelte Geld mit sich, dazu Benjamin, machten sich auf, zogen nach Ägypten und traten vor Josef. 16 Als Josef sie sah mit Benjamin, sprach er zu seinem Haushalter: Führe diese Männer ins Haus und schlachte und richte zu, denn sie sollen zu Mittag mit mir essen. 17 Und der Mann tat, wie ihm Josef gesagt hatte, und führte die Männer in Josefs Haus. 18 Sie fürchteten sich aber, weil sie in Josefs Haus geführt wurden, und sprachen: Wir sind hereingeführt um des Geldes willen, das wir in unsern Säcken das vorige Mal wiedergefunden haben; man will auf uns eindringen und über uns herfallen und uns zu Sklaven machen und uns die Esel nehmen. (Ge 42:28) 19 Darum traten sie zu Josefs Haushalter und redeten mit ihm vor der Haustür 20 und sprachen: Mein Herr, wir sind das vorige Mal herabgezogen, Getreide zu kaufen, 21 und als wir in die Herberge kamen und unsere Säcke auftaten, siehe, da war eines jeden Geld oben in seinem Sack mit vollem Gewicht. Darum haben wir’s wieder mit uns gebracht, 22 haben auch anderes Geld mit uns herabgebracht, Getreide zu kaufen. Wir wissen aber nicht, wer uns unser Geld in unsere Säcke gesteckt hat. 23 Er aber sprach: Seid guten Mutes, fürchtet euch nicht! Euer Gott und eures Vaters Gott hat euch einen Schatz gegeben in eure Säcke. Euer Geld habe ich erhalten. Und er führte Simeon zu ihnen heraus (Ge 42:24) 24 und brachte sie in Josefs Haus, gab ihnen Wasser, dass sie ihre Füße wuschen, und gab ihren Eseln Futter. 25 Sie aber richteten das Geschenk zu, bis Josef mittags käme; denn sie hatten gehört, dass sie dort essen sollten. 26 Als nun Josef ins Haus trat, brachten sie ihm das Geschenk ins Haus, das sie mitgebracht hatten, und fielen vor ihm nieder zur Erde. 27 Er aber grüßte sie freundlich und sprach: Geht es eurem alten Vater gut, von dem ihr mir sagtet? Lebt er noch? 28 Sie antworteten: Es geht deinem Knechte, unserm Vater, gut und er lebt noch. Und sie verneigten sich und fielen vor ihm nieder. (Ge 37:7; Ge 37:9) 29 Und er hob seine Augen auf und sah seinen Bruder Benjamin, seiner Mutter Sohn, und sprach: Ist das euer jüngster Bruder, von dem ihr mir sagtet? Und sprach weiter: Gott sei dir gnädig, mein Sohn! 30 Und Josef eilte hinaus; denn sein Herz entbrannte ihm für seinen Bruder, und er suchte, wo er weinen könnte, und ging in seine Kammer und weinte daselbst. 31 Und als er sein Angesicht gewaschen hatte, ging er heraus und hielt an sich und sprach: Legt die Speisen auf! 32 Und man trug ihm besonders auf und jenen auch besonders und den Ägyptern, die mit ihm aßen, auch besonders. Denn die Ägypter dürfen nicht essen mit den Hebräern; denn es ist ein Gräuel für sie. (Ge 39:6; Ge 46:34; Ex 8:22) 33 Und man setzte sie ihm gegenüber, den Erstgeborenen nach seiner Erstgeburt und den Jüngsten nach seiner Jugend. Darüber verwunderten sie sich untereinander. 34 Und man trug ihnen Essen auf von seinem Tisch, aber Benjamin bekam fünfmal mehr als die andern. Und sie tranken und wurden trunken mit ihm.

1 La famine pesait lourdement sur le pays. 2 Lorsqu'ils eurent fini de manger le blé qu'ils avaient rapporté d'Egypte, Jacob dit à ses fils: «Retournez nous acheter un peu de nourriture.» 3 Juda lui répondit: «Cet homme nous a formellement déclaré: ‘Vous ne serez pas admis en ma présence à moins que votre frère ne soit avec vous.’ 4 Si donc tu veux bien laisser notre frère partir avec nous, nous descendrons t'acheter de la nourriture. 5 En revanche, si tu ne veux pas le laisser partir, nous ne descendrons pas. En effet, cet homme nous a dit: ‘Vous ne serez pas admis en ma présence à moins que votre frère ne soit avec vous.’» 6 Israël dit alors: «Pourquoi avez-vous mal agi envers moi en révélant à cet homme que vous aviez encore un frère?» 7 Ils répondirent: «Cet homme nous a interrogés sur nous et sur notre origine en disant: ‘Votre père est-il encore en vie? Avez-vous un frère?’ et nous avons répondu à ces questions-là. Pouvions-nous savoir qu'il dirait: ‘Faites venir votre frère’?» 8 Juda dit à son père Israël: «Laisse le garçon partir avec moi, pour que nous puissions nous mettre en route. Ainsi nous resterons en vie et ne mourrons pas, ni nous, ni toi ni nos enfants. 9 Je me porte moi-même garant pour lui, c'est à moi que tu le réclameras. Si je ne te le ramène pas et ne te permets pas de le revoir, je serai pour toujours coupable envers toi. 10 En effet, si nous n'avions pas tardé, nous serions déjà deux fois de retour.» 11 Leur père Israël leur dit: «Puisqu'il le faut, faites ceci: prenez dans vos sacs des meilleurs produits du pays pour en apporter en cadeau à cet homme, un peu de baume et un peu de miel, des aromates, de la myrrhe, des pistaches et des amandes. 12 Prenez le double d'argent avec vous et rapportez l'argent qu'on avait mis à l'entrée de vos sacs: peut-être était-ce une erreur. 13 Quant à votre frère, prenez-le! Levez-vous et retournez vers cet homme. 14 Que le Dieu tout-puissant éveille la compassion de cet homme envers vous et qu'il laisse revenir votre autre frère et Benjamin avec vous! De mon côté, si je dois être privé d'enfants, que j'en sois privé!» 15 Ces hommes prirent le cadeau. Ils prirent aussi le double d'argent avec eux, ainsi que Benjamin. Puis ils se levèrent, descendirent en Egypte et se présentèrent devant Joseph. 16 Dès que Joseph vit Benjamin avec eux, il dit à son intendant: «Fais entrer ces hommes dans la maison, tue une bête et prépare un repas, car ils mangeront avec moi à midi.» 17 L'homme se conforma à ses instructions et les conduisit dans la maison de Joseph. 18 Ils eurent peur lorsqu'ils furent conduits à la maison de Joseph et se dirent: «C'est à cause de l'argent remis l'autre fois dans nos sacs qu'on nous emmène. C'est pour se jeter sur nous, se précipiter sur nous. C'est pour nous prendre comme esclaves et s'emparer de nos ânes.» 19 Ils s'approchèrent de l'intendant de Joseph et lui adressèrent la parole à l'entrée de la maison. 20 Ils dirent: «Pardon, seigneur, nous sommes déjà descendus une fois pour acheter de la nourriture. 21 Quand nous sommes arrivés à l'endroit où nous devions passer la nuit, nous avons ouvert nos sacs et constaté que l'argent de chacun était à l'entrée de son sac, notre poids exact d'argent. Nous le rapportons avec nous. 22 Nous avons amené une autre somme d'argent pour acheter de la nourriture. Nous ne savons pas qui avait mis notre argent dans nos sacs.» 23 L'intendant répondit: «Soyez tranquilles! N'ayez pas peur: c'est votre Dieu, le Dieu de votre père, qui vous a donné un trésor dans vos sacs. Votre argent m'était bien parvenu.» Puis il leur amena Siméon 24 et les fit entrer dans la maison de Joseph. Il leur donna de l'eau pour qu'ils puissent se laver les pieds; il donna aussi du fourrage à leurs ânes. 25 Ils préparèrent leur cadeau en attendant que Joseph vienne à midi, car on les avait informés qu'ils mangeraient chez lui. 26 Quand Joseph fut arrivé à la maison, ils lui offrirent le cadeau qu'ils avaient apporté et se prosternèrent jusqu'à terre devant lui. 27 Il leur demanda comment ils allaient et dit: «Votre vieux père, dont vous aviez parlé, est-il en bonne santé? Est-il encore en vie?» 28 Ils répondirent: «Ton serviteur, notre père, est en bonne santé; il est encore en vie.» Puis ils s'inclinèrent et se prosternèrent. 29 Joseph leva les yeux et jeta un regard sur son frère Benjamin, le fils de sa mère. Il demanda: «Est-ce votre jeune frère, celui dont vous m'aviez parlé?» Et il ajouta: «Que Dieu te fasse grâce, mon fils!» 30 Il était profondément ému à la vue de son frère et avait besoin de pleurer. Il entra précipitamment dans une chambre et y pleura. 31 Après s'être lavé le visage, il en sortit. Retenant son émotion, il ordonna qu'on serve à manger. 32 On servit séparément Joseph et ses frères. Les Egyptiens qui mangeaient avec lui furent aussi servis séparément, car les Egyptiens ne pouvaient pas manger avec les Hébreux: c'est une pratique abominable à leurs yeux. 33 Les frères de Joseph s'assirent en sa présence, de l'aîné au plus jeune en fonction de leur âge. Ils se regardaient les uns les autres avec étonnement. 34 Joseph leur fit porter des plats qui étaient devant lui et Benjamin en eut cinq fois plus que les autres. Ils burent tout leur soûl avec lui.
