Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt

1 When Jacob learned that there was grain for sale in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” (Ac 7:12) 2 And he said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go down and buy grain for us there, that we may live and not die.” (Ge 43:8) 3 So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. 4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph’s brother, with his brothers, for he feared that harm might happen to him. (Ge 35:18; Ge 42:38) 5 Thus the sons of Israel came to buy among the others who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan. 6 Now Joseph was governor over the land. He was the one who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground. (Ge 37:7; Ge 37:9; Ge 41:41) 7 Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he treated them like strangers and spoke roughly to them. “Where do you come from?” he said. They said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.” (Ge 42:30) 8 And Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. 9 And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamed of them. And he said to them, “You are spies; you have come to see the nakedness of the land.” (Ge 37:5; Ge 37:9; Ge 42:7; Ge 42:30)

10 They said to him, “No, my lord, your servants have come to buy food. 11 We are all sons of one man. We are honest men. Your servants have never been spies.” 12 He said to them, “No, it is the nakedness of the land that you have come to see.” 13 And they said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more.” (Ge 37:30; Ge 42:32) 14 But Joseph said to them, “It is as I said to you. You are spies. 15 By this you shall be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here. 16 Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. Or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies.” 17 And he put them all together in custody for three days. 18 On the third day Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, for I fear God: (Le 25:43; Ne 5:15) 19 if you are honest men, let one of your brothers remain confined where you are in custody, and let the rest go and carry grain for the famine of your households, (Ge 42:33) 20 and bring your youngest brother to me. So your words will be verified, and you shall not die.” And they did so. (Ge 42:34; Ge 43:5; Ge 44:23) 21 Then they said to one another, “In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.” (Ge 37:23; Job 36:8) 22 And Reuben answered them, “Did I not tell you not to sin against the boy? But you did not listen. So now there comes a reckoning for his blood.” (Ge 9:5; Ge 37:21; 1Ki 2:32; 2Ch 24:22; Ps 9:12; Lu 11:50)

23 They did not know that Joseph understood them, for there was an interpreter between them. 24 Then he turned away from them and wept. And he returned to them and spoke to them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes. (Ge 43:30) 25 And Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, and to replace every man’s money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. This was done for them. (Ge 44:1) 26 Then they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed. 27 And as one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at the lodging place, he saw his money in the mouth of his sack. 28 He said to his brothers, “My money has been put back; here it is in the mouth of my sack!” At this their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?” 29 When they came to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying, 30 “The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly to us and took us to be spies of the land. (Ge 42:7; Ge 42:9) 31 But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we have never been spies. 32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father. One is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.’ (Ge 42:13) 33 Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, ‘By this I shall know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your households, and go your way. (Ge 42:15; Ge 42:19) 34 Bring your youngest brother to me. Then I shall know that you are not spies but honest men, and I will deliver your brother to you, and you shall trade in the land.’” (Ge 34:10; Ge 34:21) 35 As they emptied their sacks, behold, every man’s bundle of money was in his sack. And when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid. (Ge 42:27; Ge 43:21) 36 And Jacob their father said to them, “You have bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and now you would take Benjamin. All this has come against me.” (Ge 43:14) 37 Then Reuben said to his father, “Kill my two sons if I do not bring him back to you. Put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you.” (Ge 46:9) 38 But he said, “My son shall not go down with you, for his brother is dead, and he is the only one left. Erste Reise der Söhne Jakobs nach Ägypten

1 Als aber Jakob sah, dass Getreide in Ägypten zu haben war, sprach er zu seinen Söhnen: Was seht ihr euch lange an? 2 Siehe, ich höre, es sei in Ägypten Getreide zu haben; zieht hinab und kauft uns Getreide, dass wir leben und nicht sterben. 3 Da zogen hinab zehn Brüder Josefs, um in Ägypten Getreide zu kaufen. 4 Aber den Benjamin, Josefs Bruder, ließ Jakob nicht mit seinen Brüdern ziehen; denn er sprach: Es könnte ihm ein Unfall begegnen. 5 So kamen die Söhne Israels, Getreide zu kaufen, samt andern, die mit ihnen zogen; denn es war Hungersnot im Lande Kanaan. 6 Aber Josef war der Regent im Lande und verkaufte Getreide allem Volk im Lande. Als nun seine Brüder kamen, fielen sie vor ihm nieder zur Erde auf ihr Antlitz. 7 Und er sah sie an und erkannte sie, aber er stellte sich fremd gegen sie und redete hart mit ihnen und sprach zu ihnen: Woher kommt ihr? Sie sprachen: Aus dem Lande Kanaan, Getreide zu kaufen. 8 Aber wiewohl er sie erkannte, erkannten sie ihn doch nicht. 9 Und Josef dachte an die Träume, die er von ihnen geträumt hatte, und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr seid Kundschafter und seid gekommen, zu sehen, wo das Land offen ist. (Ge 37:5) 10 Sie antworteten ihm: Nein, mein Herr! Deine Knechte sind gekommen, Getreide zu kaufen. 11 Wir sind alle eines Mannes Söhne. Wir sind redlich. Deine Knechte sind keine Kundschafter. 12 Er sprach zu ihnen: Nein, sondern ihr seid gekommen, zu sehen, wo das Land offen ist. 13 Sie antworteten ihm: Wir, deine Knechte, sind zwölf Brüder, eines Mannes Söhne im Lande Kanaan, und der jüngste ist noch bei unserm Vater, und der eine ist nicht mehr. 14 Josef sprach zu ihnen: Es ist, wie ich euch gesagt habe: Kundschafter seid ihr. 15 Daran sollt ihr geprüft werden: So wahr der Pharao lebt – ihr sollt nicht von hier wegkommen, es komme denn her euer jüngster Bruder! 16 Sendet einen von euch hin, der euren Bruder hole, ihr aber sollt gefangen sein. Daran will ich prüfen eure Rede, ob ihr mit Wahrheit umgeht. Andernfalls – so wahr der Pharao lebt! – seid ihr Kundschafter! 17 Und er ließ sie zusammen in Gewahrsam legen drei Tage lang. (Ge 37:24) 18 Am dritten Tage aber sprach er zu ihnen: Wollt ihr leben, so tut nun dies, denn ich fürchte Gott: 19 Seid ihr redlich, so lasst einen eurer Brüder gebunden liegen in eurem Gefängnis; ihr aber zieht hin und bringt heim, was ihr gekauft habt für den Hunger in euren Häusern. 20 Und bringt euren jüngsten Bruder zu mir, so will ich euren Worten glauben, sodass ihr nicht sterben müsst. Und sie gingen darauf ein. 21 Sie sprachen aber untereinander: Das haben wir an unserem Bruder verschuldet! Denn wir sahen die Angst seiner Seele, als er uns anflehte, und wir wollten ihn nicht erhören; darum kommt nun diese Trübsal über uns. 22 Ruben antwortete ihnen und sprach: Sagte ich’s euch nicht, als ich sprach: Versündigt euch nicht an dem Knaben, doch ihr wolltet nicht hören? Nun wird sein Blut gefordert. (Ge 37:21) 23 Sie wussten aber nicht, dass es Josef verstand; denn er redete mit ihnen durch einen Dolmetscher. 24 Und er wandte sich von ihnen und weinte. Als er sich nun wieder zu ihnen wandte und mit ihnen redete, nahm er aus ihrer Mitte Simeon und ließ ihn binden vor ihren Augen. 25 Und Josef gab Befehl, ihre Säcke mit Korn zu füllen und ihnen ihr Geld wiederzugeben, einem jeden in seinen Sack, dazu auch Zehrung auf den Weg; und so tat man ihnen. 26 Und sie luden ihr Getreide auf ihre Esel und zogen von dannen. 27 Als aber einer seinen Sack auftat, dass er seinem Esel Futter gäbe in der Herberge, sah er sein Geld, das oben im Sack lag, 28 und sprach zu seinen Brüdern: Mein Geld ist wieder da, siehe, in meinem Sack ist es! Da stockte ihnen das Herz, und sie sprachen erschrocken zueinander: Was hat Gott uns angetan? 29 Als sie nun heimkamen zu ihrem Vater Jakob ins Land Kanaan, sagten sie ihm alles, was ihnen begegnet war, und sprachen: 30 Der Mann, der im Lande Herr ist, redete hart mit uns und hielt uns für Kundschafter. 31 Und wir antworteten ihm: Wir sind redlich, wir sind keine Kundschafter, 32 sondern zwölf Brüder, unseres Vaters Söhne; der eine ist nicht mehr, und der jüngste ist noch bei unserm Vater im Lande Kanaan. 33 Da sprach der Herr im Lande zu uns: Daran will ich merken, ob ihr redlich seid: Einen eurer Brüder lasst bei mir und nehmt für eure Häuser, wie viel ihr bedürft, und zieht hin (Ge 24:1) 34 und bringt euren jüngsten Bruder zu mir, so merke ich, dass ihr nicht Kundschafter, sondern redlich seid; dann will ich euch auch euren Bruder wiedergeben und ihr mögt im Lande Handel treiben. 35 Und als sie die Säcke ausschütteten, fand ein jeder seinen Beutel Geld in seinem Sack. Und als sie sahen, dass es die Beutel mit ihrem Geld waren, erschraken sie samt ihrem Vater. 36 Da sprach Jakob, ihr Vater, zu ihnen: Ihr beraubt mich meiner Kinder! Josef ist nicht mehr da, Simeon ist nicht mehr da, Benjamin wollt ihr auch wegnehmen; es geht alles über mich. 37 Ruben antwortete seinem Vater und sprach: Wenn ich ihn dir nicht wiederbringe, so töte meine zwei Söhne. Gib ihn nur in meine Hand, ich will ihn dir wiederbringen. 38 Er sprach: Mein Sohn soll nicht mit euch hinabziehen; denn sein Bruder ist tot, und er ist allein übrig geblieben. Wenn ihm ein Unfall auf dem Wege begegnete, den ihr reist, würdet ihr meine grauen Haare mit Herzeleid hinunter zu den Toten bringen.

1 Voyant qu'il y avait du blé en Egypte, Jacob dit à ses fils: «Pourquoi vous regardez-vous les uns les autres?» 2 Il ajouta: «J'ai appris qu'il y avait du blé en Egypte. Descendez-y pour nous en acheter afin que nous restions en vie et ne mourions pas.» 3 Dix frères de Joseph descendirent en Egypte pour acheter du blé. 4 Jacob n'envoya pas avec eux Benjamin, le frère de Joseph, car il avait peur qu'il ne lui arrive un malheur. 5 Les fils d'Israël se joignirent à d'autres arrivants pour acheter du blé, car la famine régnait dans le pays de Canaan. 6 Quant à Joseph, il exerçait le pouvoir sur le pays. C'était lui qui vendait du blé à toute la population du pays. Les frères de Joseph vinrent et se prosternèrent devant lui le visage contre terre. 7 Quand Joseph vit ses frères, il les reconnut, mais il se comporta en étranger vis-à-vis d'eux. Il leur parla durement et leur dit: «D'où venez-vous?» Ils répondirent: «Du pays de Canaan, pour acheter des vivres.» 8 Si Joseph reconnut ses frères, eux ne le reconnurent pas. 9 Joseph se souvint des rêves qu'il avait eus à leur sujet et leur dit: «Vous êtes des espions. C'est pour examiner les points faibles du pays que vous êtes venus.» 10 Ils lui répondirent: «Non, seigneur, tes serviteurs sont venus pour acheter du blé. 11 Nous sommes tous les fils d'un même homme. Nous sommes sincères! Nous tes serviteurs, nous ne sommes pas des espions.» 12 Il leur dit: «Pas du tout, c'est pour examiner les points faibles du pays que vous êtes venus.» 13 Ils répondirent: «Nous tes serviteurs, nous étions douze frères, fils du même homme dans le pays de Canaan. Le plus jeune est aujourd'hui avec notre père et il y en a un qui n'est plus là.» 14 Joseph leur dit: «C'est ce que je viens de vous dire: vous êtes des espions. 15 Voici comment votre sincérité sera vérifiée: par la vie du pharaon, vous ne sortirez pas d'ici avant que votre jeune frère ne soit venu. 16 Envoyez l'un de vous chercher votre frère pendant que vous, vous resterez prisonniers. Vos affirmations seront ainsi vérifiées et je saurai si la vérité est de votre côté. Sinon, par la vie du pharaon, c'est que vous êtes des espions.» 17 Puis il les mit trois jours en prison ensemble. 18 Le troisième jour, Joseph leur dit: «Faites ce que je vous dis et vous vivrez. Je crains Dieu! 19 Si vous êtes sincères, qu'un seul de vous reste enfermé dans cette prison. Quant aux autres, partez, emportez du blé pour nourrir vos familles. 20 Puis amenez-moi votre jeune frère. Ainsi, vos affirmations seront vérifiées et vous ne mourrez pas.» C'est ce qu'ils firent. 21 Ils se dirent alors l'un à l'autre: «Oui, nous avons été coupables envers notre frère. Nous avons bien vu sa détresse quand il nous demandait grâce, et nous ne l'avons pas écouté. C'est pour cela que cette détresse nous frappe.» 22 Ruben répliqua: «Ne vous disais-je pas de ne pas commettre de faute envers cet enfant? Mais vous n'avez pas écouté, et voici que son sang nous est redemandé.» 23 Ils ne savaient pas que Joseph comprenait, car il se servait d'un interprète avec eux. 24 Il s'éloigna d'eux pour pleurer, puis il revint leur parler. Il prit parmi eux Siméon et le fit enchaîner sous leurs yeux. 25 Joseph ordonna qu'on remplisse de blé leurs sacs, qu'on remette l'argent de chacun dans son sac et qu'on leur donne des provisions pour la route, et c'est ce qu'on fit. 26 Quant à eux, ils chargèrent le blé sur leurs ânes et partirent. 27 L'un d'eux ouvrit son sac pour donner du fourrage à son âne, à l'endroit où ils passèrent la nuit, et il vit l'argent à l'entrée du sac. 28 Il dit à ses frères: «On m'a rendu mon argent et le voici dans mon sac.» Alors le cœur leur manqua et ils se dirent l'un à l'autre en tremblant: «Qu'est-ce que Dieu nous a fait?» 29 Une fois vers leur père Jacob dans le pays de Canaan, ils lui racontèrent tout ce qui leur était arrivé. Ils dirent: 30 «L'homme qui est le seigneur du pays nous a parlé durement et nous a pris pour des espions. 31 Nous lui avons dit: ‘Nous sommes sincères, nous ne sommes pas des espions. 32 Nous étions douze frères, fils du même père. L'un n'est plus là et le plus jeune est aujourd'hui avec notre père dans le pays de Canaan.’ 33 L'homme qui est le seigneur du pays nous a alors dit: ‘Voici comment je saurai si vous êtes sincères. Laissez l'un de vos frères avec moi, prenez de quoi nourrir vos familles et repartez, 34 puis amenez-moi votre jeune frère. Je saurai ainsi que vous n'êtes pas des espions, que vous êtes sincères. Je vous rendrai votre frère et vous pourrez librement parcourir le pays.’» 35 Lorsqu'ils vidèrent leurs sacs, ils constatèrent que le paquet d'argent de chacun était dans son sac. Ils virent, eux et leur père, leurs paquets d'argent et ils eurent peur. 36 Leur père Jacob leur dit: «Vous me privez de mes enfants! Joseph n'est plus là, Siméon n'est plus là et vous prendriez Benjamin! C'est sur moi que tout cela retombe.» 37 Ruben dit à son père: «Si je ne te ramène pas Benjamin, tu pourras faire mourir mes deux fils. Confie-le-moi et je te le ramènerai.» 38 Jacob dit: «Mon fils ne descendra pas avec vous, car son frère est mort et il ne reste que lui. S'il lui arrivait un malheur pendant le voyage que vous allez faire, vous feriez descendre avec douleur mes cheveux blancs dans le séjour des morts.»
