1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. (Mt 26:2; Mr 14:1; Joh 6:4) 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people. (Mt 21:46; Joh 11:53) 3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. (Mt 26:14; Mt 27:3; Mr 14:10; Lu 6:16; Joh 6:71; Joh 12:4; Joh 13:2; Joh 13:27; Joh 13:30; Ac 1:16; Ac 5:3) 4 He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. (Ac 4:1; Ac 5:24; Ac 5:26) 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6 So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd. (Mt 20:18) 7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. (Ex 12:18; Mt 26:17; Mr 14:12; 1Co 5:7) 8 So Jesus[1] sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” 9 They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ (Lu 2:7; Joh 11:28) 12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” (Ac 1:13) 13 And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. (Lu 19:32) 14 And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. (Mt 26:20; Mr 14:17) 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it[2] until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” (Lu 14:15; Lu 22:30; Re 19:9) 17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. (Mt 15:36) 18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” (Mt 26:29; Mr 14:25; Lu 22:16) 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” (Mt 26:26; Mr 14:22; Lu 22:17; Joh 6:53; 1Co 10:16; 1Co 11:23) 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.[3] (Ex 24:8; Zec 9:11; Lu 22:19; 2Co 3:6; Heb 13:20) 21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. (Ps 41:9; Mt 26:21; Mr 14:18; Joh 13:18; Joh 13:21) 22 For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” (Ac 2:23) 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this. 24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. (Mr 9:34; Lu 9:46) 25 And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. (Mt 18:1; Mt 20:25; Mr 10:42; 1Pe 5:3) 26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. (Mt 23:11; Lu 9:48; Lu 22:25) 27 For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. (Mt 20:28; Lu 12:37) 28 “You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, (Heb 2:18; Heb 4:15) 29 and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, (Mt 25:34; Mt 28:18; Joh 17:18; Ac 14:22; 2Ti 2:12; Re 1:6) 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” (Ps 51:13; Joh 17:9; Joh 17:11; Joh 17:15; Joh 21:15) 33 Peter[5] said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” (Joh 21:19; Ac 12:4) 34 Jesus[6] said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.” (Mt 26:33; Mr 14:29; Joh 13:37) 35 And he said to them, “When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” (Mt 10:9; Mr 6:8; Lu 9:3; Lu 10:4) 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about me has its fulfillment.” (Isa 53:12; Mt 1:22; Lu 13:33; Joh 17:4; Joh 19:30; Ac 1:16) 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “It is enough.” (De 3:26; Mr 14:41; Lu 22:49) 39 And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” (Mt 6:10; Mt 20:22; Heb 5:7) 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. (Mt 4:11; Heb 1:14) 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.[7] (Lu 22:42) 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.” (Lu 22:40) 47 While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, (Mt 26:47; Mr 14:43; Lu 22:3; Joh 18:3) 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” (Lu 22:38) 50 And one of them struck the servant[8] of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? (Lu 22:4) 53 When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.” (Mr 14:35; Mr 14:41; Lu 2:46; Joh 8:2; Joh 12:27; Joh 16:4; Joh 18:20; Ac 26:18; Eph 6:12) 54 Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house, and Peter was following at a distance. (Mt 26:57; Mt 26:58; Mr 14:53; Mr 14:54; Joh 18:15) 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. (Mt 26:3; Mt 26:69; Mr 14:66; Joh 18:16; Joh 18:25) 56 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” 58 And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” (Ac 12:15) 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” (Mr 10:21; Lu 22:34; Ac 3:13) 62 And he went out and wept bitterly. 63 Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. (Mt 26:67; Mr 14:65; Joh 18:22) 64 They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?” (Lu 7:39; Lu 22:63) 65 And they said many other things against him, blaspheming him. (Mt 27:39) 66 When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said, (Mt 5:22; Mt 26:63; Mt 27:1; Mr 14:61; Mr 15:1; Lu 22:67; Joh 18:19; Joh 18:28; Ac 22:5) 67 “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, (Mt 1:17; Joh 10:24) 68 and if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” (Mr 16:19; Ac 7:56; Heb 1:3) 70 So they all said, “Are you the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, “You say that I am.” (Mt 14:33; Mt 26:25; Mt 27:11; Mr 15:2; Lu 23:3) 71 Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”

1 Es war aber nahe das Fest der Ungesäuerten Brote, das Passa heißt. (De 16:1; Mt 26:1; Mr 14:1; Joh 13:1; Joh 18:1) 2 Und die Hohenpriester und Schriftgelehrten trachteten danach, wie sie ihn töten könnten; denn sie fürchteten sich vor dem Volk. (Lu 19:47; Lu 20:19) 3 Es fuhr aber der Satan in Judas, genannt Iskariot, der zur Zahl der Zwölf gehörte. (Lu 4:13) 4 Und er ging hin und redete mit den Hohenpriestern und mit den Hauptleuten darüber, wie er ihnen Jesus überantworten könnte. 5 Und sie wurden froh und kamen überein, ihm Geld zu geben. 6 Und er sagte es zu und suchte eine Gelegenheit, dass er ihn an sie ausliefere ohne Aufsehen. 7 Es kam nun der Tag der Ungesäuerten Brote, an dem man das Passalamm opfern musste. (Ex 12:3; Ex 12:18) 8 Und er sandte Petrus und Johannes und sprach: Geht hin und bereitet uns das Passalamm, damit wir’s essen. 9 Sie aber fragten ihn: Wo willst du, dass wir’s bereiten? 10 Er sprach zu ihnen: Siehe, wenn ihr hineinkommt in die Stadt, wird euch ein Mensch begegnen, der trägt einen Wasserkrug; folgt ihm in das Haus, in das er hineingeht, 11 und sagt zu dem Hausherrn: Der Meister lässt dir sagen: Wo ist die Herberge, in der ich das Passalamm essen kann mit meinen Jüngern? 12 Und er wird euch einen großen Saal zeigen, schön ausgelegt; dort bereitet das Mahl. 13 Sie gingen hin und fanden’s, wie er ihnen gesagt hatte, und bereiteten das Passalamm. (Lu 19:32) 14 Und als die Stunde kam, setzte er sich nieder und die Apostel mit ihm. 15 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Mich hat herzlich verlangt, dies Passalamm mit euch zu essen, ehe ich leide. 16 Denn ich sage euch, dass ich es nicht mehr essen werde, bis es erfüllt wird im Reich Gottes. (Lu 13:29) 17 Und er nahm den Kelch, dankte und sprach: Nehmt ihn und teilt ihn unter euch; 18 denn ich sage euch: Ich werde von nun an nicht trinken von dem Gewächs des Weinstocks, bis das Reich Gottes kommt. 19 Und er nahm das Brot, dankte und brach’s und gab’s ihnen und sprach: Das ist mein Leib, der für euch gegeben wird; das tut zu meinem Gedächtnis. (1Co 10:16; 1Co 11:23) 20 Desgleichen auch den Kelch nach dem Mahl und sprach: Dieser Kelch ist der neue Bund[1] in meinem Blut, das für euch vergossen wird! (Ex 24:8; Jer 31:31) 21 Doch siehe, die Hand meines Verräters ist mit mir am Tisch. 22 Denn der Menschensohn geht zwar dahin, wie es beschlossen ist; doch weh dem Menschen, durch den er verraten wird! 23 Und sie fingen an, untereinander zu fragen, wer es wohl wäre unter ihnen, der das tun würde. 24 Es erhob sich auch ein Streit unter ihnen, wer von ihnen als der Größte gelten sollte. (Mt 20:25; Mr 10:42; Lu 9:46) 25 Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Die Könige herrschen über ihre Völker, und ihre Machthaber lassen sich Wohltäter nennen. 26 Ihr aber nicht so! Sondern der Größte unter euch soll sein wie der Jüngste und der Vornehmste wie ein Diener. 27 Denn wer ist größer: der zu Tisch sitzt oder der dient? Ist’s nicht der, der zu Tisch sitzt? Ich aber bin unter euch wie ein Diener. 28 Ihr aber seid’s, die ihr ausgeharrt habt bei mir in meinen Anfechtungen. (Joh 6:67) 29 Und wie mir mein Vater das Reich bestimmt hat, so bestimme ich für euch, (Lu 12:32) 30 dass ihr essen und trinken sollt an meinem Tisch in meinem Reich und sitzen auf Thronen und richten die zwölf Stämme Israels. (Mt 19:28) 31 Simon, Simon, siehe, der Satan hat begehrt, euch zu sieben wie den Weizen. (2Co 2:11) 32 Ich aber habe für dich gebeten, dass dein Glaube nicht aufhöre. Und wenn du dann umkehrst, so stärke deine Brüder. (Joh 17:9; Joh 17:11; Joh 17:15) 33 Er aber sprach zu ihm: Herr, ich bin bereit, mit dir ins Gefängnis und in den Tod zu gehen. 34 Er aber sprach: Petrus, ich sage dir: Der Hahn wird heute nicht krähen, ehe du dreimal geleugnet hast, dass du mich kennst. 35 Und er sprach zu ihnen: Als ich euch ausgesandt habe ohne Geldbeutel, ohne Tasche und ohne Schuhe, habt ihr je Mangel gehabt? Sie sprachen: Nein, keinen. (Lu 9:3; Lu 10:4) 36 Da sprach er zu ihnen: Aber nun, wer einen Geldbeutel hat, der nehme ihn, desgleichen auch eine Tasche, und wer’s nicht hat, verkaufe seinen Mantel und kaufe ein Schwert. 37 Denn ich sage euch: Es muss das an mir vollendet werden, was geschrieben steht: »Er ist zu den Übeltätern gerechnet worden.« Denn was von mir geschrieben ist, das hat ein Ende. 38 Sie sprachen aber: Herr, siehe, hier sind zwei Schwerter. Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Es ist genug. 39 Und er ging nach seiner Gewohnheit hinaus an den Ölberg. Es folgten ihm aber auch die Jünger. (Lu 21:37) 40 Und als er dahin kam, sprach er zu ihnen: Betet, dass ihr nicht in Anfechtung fallt! 41 Und er riss sich von ihnen los, etwa einen Steinwurf weit, und kniete nieder, betete 42 und sprach: Vater, willst du, so nimm diesen Kelch von mir; doch nicht mein, sondern dein Wille geschehe! (Mt 6:10; Joh 18:11) 43 [Es erschien ihm aber ein Engel vom Himmel und stärkte ihn. 44 Und er geriet in Todesangst und betete heftiger. Und sein Schweiß wurde wie Blutstropfen, die auf die Erde fielen.][2] 45 Und er stand auf von dem Gebet und kam zu seinen Jüngern und fand sie schlafend vor Traurigkeit 46 und sprach zu ihnen: Was schlaft ihr? Steht auf und betet, damit ihr nicht in Anfechtung fallt! 47 Als er aber noch redete, siehe, da kam eine Schar; und einer von den Zwölfen, der mit dem Namen Judas, ging vor ihnen her und nahte sich Jesus, um ihn zu küssen. 48 Jesus aber sprach zu ihm: Judas, verrätst du den Menschensohn mit einem Kuss? 49 Als aber, die um ihn waren, sahen, was geschehen würde, sprachen sie: Herr, sollen wir mit dem Schwert dreinschlagen? 50 Und einer von ihnen schlug nach dem Knecht des Hohenpriesters und hieb ihm sein rechtes Ohr ab. 51 Da sprach Jesus: Lasst ab! Nicht weiter! Und er rührte sein Ohr an und heilte ihn. 52 Jesus aber sprach zu den Hohenpriestern und Hauptleuten des Tempels und den Ältesten, die zu ihm hergekommen waren: Ihr seid wie gegen einen Räuber mit Schwertern und mit Stangen ausgezogen? 53 Ich bin täglich bei euch im Tempel gewesen, und ihr habt nicht Hand an mich gelegt. Aber dies ist eure Stunde und die Macht der Finsternis. (Lu 19:47; Lu 20:19; Joh 7:30; Joh 8:20) 54 Sie ergriffen ihn aber und führten ihn ab und brachten ihn in das Haus des Hohenpriesters. Petrus aber folgte von ferne. 55 Da zündeten sie ein Feuer an mitten im Hof und setzten sich zusammen; und Petrus setzte sich mitten unter sie. 56 Da sah ihn eine Magd im Licht sitzen und sah ihn genau an und sprach: Dieser war auch mit ihm. 57 Er aber leugnete und sprach: Frau, ich kenne ihn nicht. 58 Und nach einer kleinen Weile sah ihn ein anderer und sprach: Du bist auch einer von denen. Petrus aber sprach: Mensch, ich bin’s nicht. 59 Und nach einer Weile, etwa nach einer Stunde, bekräftigte es ein anderer und sprach: Wahrhaftig, dieser war auch mit ihm; denn er ist auch ein Galiläer. 60 Petrus aber sprach: Mensch, ich weiß nicht, was du sagst. Und alsbald, während er noch redete, krähte der Hahn. 61 Und der Herr wandte sich und sah Petrus an. Und Petrus gedachte an des Herrn Wort, wie er zu ihm gesagt hatte: Ehe heute der Hahn kräht, wirst du mich dreimal verleugnen. 62 Und Petrus ging hinaus und weinte bitterlich. 63 Die Männer aber, die Jesus gefangen hielten, verspotteten ihn und schlugen ihn, 64 verdeckten sein Angesicht und fragten: Weissage, wer ist’s, der dich schlug? 65 Und viele andere Lästerungen sagten sie gegen ihn. 66 Und als es Tag wurde, versammelte sich der Rat der Ältesten des Volkes – Hohepriester und Schriftgelehrte –, und sie führten ihn vor ihren Hohen Rat 67 und sprachen: Bist du der Christus, so sage es uns! Er sprach aber zu ihnen: Sage ich’s euch, so glaubt ihr’s nicht; (Joh 3:12; Joh 10:24) 68 frage ich aber, so antwortet ihr nicht. 69 Aber von nun an wird der Menschensohn sitzen zur Rechten der Kraft Gottes. (Ps 110:1; Ac 7:56) 70 Da sprachen sie alle: Bist du denn Gottes Sohn? Er sprach zu ihnen: Ihr sagt es, ich bin es. 71 Sie aber sprachen: Was bedürfen wir noch eines Zeugnisses? Wir haben’s selbst gehört aus seinem Munde. (Lu 11:54)

1 Si avvicinava la Pasqua, la festa ebraica, durante la quale si mangia soltanto pane non lievitato. 2 I primi sacerdoti e gli altri capi giudei tramavano la morte di Gesù e cercavano il modo di ucciderlo, senza provocare una rivolta popolare, possibilità che temevano molto. 3 Allora Satana entrò in Giuda Iscariota, uno dei dodici discepoli, 4 che si recò dai capi sacerdoti e dalle guardie del tempio per mettersi dʼaccordo con loro sul modo di aiutarli a prendere Gesù. 5 Naturalmente quelli ne furono ben contenti e gli promisero una ricompensa. 6 Così Giuda cominciò a cercare lʼoccasione buona per far arrestare Gesù in un momento tranquillo, quando non cʼera gente. 7 Giunse il giorno della celebrazione della Pasqua, durante il quale lʼagnello pasquale viene ucciso e mangiato col pane senza lievito. 8 Gesù mandò avanti Pietro e Giovanni con lʼincarico di trovare un posto per preparare la cena pasquale. 9 «Dove vuoi che andiamo?» gli chiesero. 10 Gesù rispose: «Non appena entrate in Gerusalemme, troverete un uomo che porta una brocca dʼacqua. Seguitelo fin nella casa in cui entrerà; 11 poi dite al padrone di casa: “Il nostro Maestro ti chiede di mostrarci la stanza dove farà la cena di Pasqua con i suoi discepoli”. 12 Egli vi condurrà di sopra in una grande stanza, già pronta per noi. Quello è il posto. Andate e preparate là la nostra cena». 13 Pietro e Giovanni andarono in città, trovarono tutto come Gesù aveva detto e prepararono la cena di Pasqua. 14-15 Poi Gesù arrivò con gli altri. Ad una certa ora, tutti si sedettero a tavola e Gesù disse: «Ho tanto aspettato e desiderato questo momento per poter fare questa Pasqua con voi, prima che comincino le mie sofferenze. 16 E adesso vi dico che non mangerò più questa cena di Pasqua, finché ciò che essa rappresenta non si realizzi nel Regno di Dio». 17 Poi prese un calice di vino e, dopo averne ringraziato Dio, disse: «Prendete questo, e dividetelo fra voi. 18 Perché non berrò più vino, fino a quando non verrà il Regno di Dio». 19 Prese quindi un pezzo di pane e, dopo averne ringraziato Dio, lo spezzò in tante parti, che distribuì agli apostoli, dicendo: «Questo è il mio corpo, dato per voi. Mangiate questo pane in mio ricordo». 20 Dopo cena, prese il calice di vino e lʼoffrì a loro dicendo: «Questo vino è il segno del nuovo patto di Dio per salvarvi, un patto suggellato col sangue che verserò per riscattare le vostre anime. 21 Ma tra di noi, seduto a questa tavola in veste dʼamico, cʼè lʼuomo che mi tradirà. 22 Devo morire. Fa parte del piano di Dio. Ma guai a quellʼuomo che mi tradisce!» 23 Allora i discepoli cominciarono a domandarsi gli uni con gli altri chi di loro avrebbe mai fatto una cosa del genere. 24 Nacque poi tra di loro una discussione per stabilire chi di loro fosse il più importante. 25 Ma Gesù spiegò: «A questo mondo i re e i grandi uomini danno ordini ai loro servi che non hanno altra scelta se non quella di mostrarsi soddisfatti! 26 Ma fra di voi non devʼessere così! Anzi, chi è il più importante deve essere pronto a servire come se fosse lʼultima ruota del carro. 27 Chi è più grande? Chi siede a tavola o chi serve? Senzʼaltro chi siede a tavola. Ma non fra di voi! Io stesso sono il vostro servo. 28 Voi mi siete rimasti fedeli in questi giorni terribili ed ora, 29 come il Padre mio ha preparato un Regno per me, anchʼio preparo un Regno per voi. In quel Regno avrete il diritto 30 di mangiare e bere alla mia tavola, e siederete su dodici troni per giudicare le dodici tribù dʼIsraele. 31 Simone, Simone, Satana ha chiesto di mettervi alla prova e vagliarvi come il grano! 32 Ma io ho pregato per te, che la tua fede non venga meno. E tu, quando sarai convertito e tornerai di nuovo da me, daʼ forza e sostieni la fede dei tuoi fratelli!» 33 Simone allora disse: «Signore, io sono pronto a finire in galera e perfino a morire con te!» 34 Ma Gesù disse: «Pietro, lascia che ti dica una cosa: prima che il gallo canti domattina, tu mi avrai rinnegato tre volte!» 35 Poi Gesù chiese loro: «Quando vi mandai a predicare il Vangelo ed eravate senza denaro, né bisaccia e neppure vestiti di ricambio, come ve la siete cavata?» «Bene», risposero tutti. 36 «Ma ora, invece», aggiunse Gesù, «chi ha una bisaccia, la prenda, ed anche dei soldi! E chi non ha una spada, è meglio che venda il suo vestito per comprarne una! 37 Perché è giunto il momento che si avveri questa profezia che mi riguarda: “Sarà messo nel numero dei criminali!” Proprio così, ogni cosa scritta sul mio conto dai profeti si avvererà». 38 «Signore», risposero, «abbiamo qui due spade!» Ma Gesù disse: «Basta!» 39 Poi, accompagnato dai discepoli, Gesù uscì dalla stanza e si diresse, come al solito, verso il Monte degli Ulivi. 40 Quando fu là, disse loro: «Pregate Dio di non essere sopraffatti dalla tentazione!» 41-42 Poi sʼallontanò circa un tiro di sasso, sʼinginocchiò e pregò: «Padre, se vuoi, ti supplico, togli da me questo calice di orrore! Ma sia fatta la tua volontà, non la mia». 43 Apparve, quindi, un angelo dal cielo per confortarlo. 44 In tale agonia di spirito pregava sempre più intensamente, sudando sangue che cadeva a terra in grosse gocce. 45 Quando Gesù si rialzò e ritornò dai discepoli, li trovò tutti addormentati, sfiniti per la tristezza. 46 «Perché dormite?» disse loro Gesù. «Svegliatevi e pregate Dio di non peccare, quando siete tentati!» 47 Stava ancora parlando, quando sopraggiunse un gruppo di persone guidate da Giuda, uno dei dodici apostoli. Giuda si avvicinò a Gesù per baciarlo, 48 ma Gesù gli disse: «Giuda, come puoi tradire così, con un bacio, il Messia?» 49 Quando gli altri discepoli videro ciò che stava accadendo, gridarono: «Signore, dobbiamo combattere? Abbiamo portato con noi le spade!» 50 Ed uno di loro colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli mozzò lʼorecchio destro. 51 Ma Gesù disse: «Basta così!» Poi toccò il punto da cui era stato staccato lʼorecchio e lo guarì. 52 Si rivolse quindi ai capi sacerdoti, ai capitani delle guardie del tempio e ai capi religiosi che guidavano la folla: «Sono un tipo così pericoloso da venirmi a prendere armati di spade e bastoni? 53 Perché non mi avete arrestato nel tempio? Ero là ogni giorno. Ma questo è il vostro momento, il momento in cui trionfa la potenza di Satana!» 54 Allora lo catturarono e lo portarono alla residenza del sommo sacerdote; intanto Pietro lo seguiva da lontano. 55 Nel cortile alcuni soldati avevano acceso un fuoco e molti sedevano lì attorno per scaldarsi. Pietro si unì a loro. 56 Al bagliore della fiamma una serva sʼaccorse di lui, e cominciò ad osservarlo attentamente. «Questʼuomo era con Gesù!» sbottò infine. 57 Ma Pietro negò: «Donna», disse, «io non lo conosco nemmeno!…» 58 Dopo un poʼ, qualcun altro, dopo averlo osservato, lʼapostrofò: «Anche tu sei uno di loro!» «Nossignore, non è vero!» replicò Pietro. 59 Era trascorsa circa unʼora, quando anche un terzo insistette, dicendo: «Conosco questo qui, è uno dei discepoli di Gesù, infatti viene dalla Galilea!» 60 Ma Pietro disse: «Ma se non so nemmeno di che stai parlando!» Non aveva finito di pronunciare queste parole, che un gallo cantò. 61 In quel momento Gesù si volse e guardò Pietro. Allora Pietro si ricordò che Gesù gli aveva detto: «Prima che il gallo canti domani mattina, mi rinnegherai tre volte…» 62 Disperato, uscì dal cortile e pianse amaramente. 63-64 Intanto le guardie che avevano in consegna Gesù, si prendevano gioco di lui. Dopo averlo bendato, lo prendevano a pugni, poi gli chiedevano: «Ehi profeta, indovina un poʼ chi ti ha colpito questa volta?» 65 E, bestemmiando, lo coprivano di ogni sorta dʼinsulti. 66 Il giorno dopo, alle prime ore dellʼalba, si riunì la Suprema Corte Ebraica, che comprendeva i capi sacerdoti e tutte le massime autorità religiose del paese. Gesù fu portato davanti a loro. 67-68 «Se tu sei il Cristo, ce lo devi dire!» gli dissero. Ma egli rispose: «Se ve lo dicessi, voi non mi credereste, né mi lascereste parlare. 69 Ma sʼavvicina lʼora in cui io, il Messia, siederò sul trono; alla destra del Dio Onnipotente». 70 A queste parole tutti gridarono: «Allora tu saresti il Figlio di Dio?!» Gesù rispose loro: «Sì che lo sono!» 71 «Che bisogno abbiamo di altre testimonianze?» gridarono. «Noi stessi abbiamo sentito con le nostre orecchie ciò che ha detto!»
