He Will Tread Down Our Foes

To the choirmaster: according to Shushan Eduth. A Miktam of David; for instruction; when he strove with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and when Joab on his return struck down twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

1 O God, you have rejected us, broken our defenses; you have been angry; oh, restore us.^[1] (2Sa 5:20; Ps 44:9; Ps 60:10; Ps 80:3)

1 Ein güldenes Kleinod Davids, vorzusingen, nach der Weise »Lilie des Zeugnisses«, zur Belehrung, 2 als er mit den Aramäern von Mesopotamien und mit den Aramäern von Zoba Krieg führte; als Joab umkehrte und die Edomiter im Salztal schlug, zwölftausend Mann. (2Sa 8:3; 2Sa 8:13; 2Sa 10:13; 2Sa 10:18)

3 Gott, der du uns verstoßen und zerstreut hast und zornig warst, tröste uns wieder; 4 der du die Erde erschüttert und zerrissen hast, heile ihre Risse; denn sie wankt. 5 Du ließest deinem Volk Hartes widerfahren, du gabst uns einen Wein zu trinken, dass wir taumelten. (Ps 75:9) 6 Du hast doch ein Zeichen gegeben denen, die dich fürchten, damit sie fliehen können vor dem Bogen. Sela. (Ex 17:15) 7 Dass deine Freunde errettet werden, dazu hilf mit deiner Rechten und erhöre uns! (Ps 108:7) 8 Gott hat in seinem Heiligtum geredet: Ich will frohlocken; ich will Sichem verteilen und ausmessen das Tal Sukkot; 9 Gilead ist mein, mein ist Manasse, / Ephraim ist der Schutz meines Hauptes, Juda ist mein Zepter. (Ge 49:10) 10 Moab ist mein Waschbecken, / meinen Schuh werfe ich auf Edom, Philisterland, jauchze mir zu! 11 Wer wird mich führen in die feste Stadt? Wer geleitet mich nach Edom? 12 Wirst du es nicht tun, Gott, der du uns verstoßen hast, und ziehst nicht aus, Gott, mit unserm Heer? 13 Schaff uns Beistand in der Not; denn Menschenhilfe ist nichts nütze. 14 Mit Gott wollen wir Taten tun. Er wird unsre Feinde zertreten.

Preghiera dopo la sconfitta

1 Al direttore del coro. Su «Il giglio della testimonianza». Inno di Davide, da insegnare; quando egli mosse guerra ai Siri di Mesopotamia e ai Siri di Soba, e Ioab tornò e sconfisse dodicimila Idumei nella valle del Sale. O Dio, tu ci hai respinti, ci hai dispersi, ti sei sdegnato; ristabiliscici ora! 2 Hai fatto tremare la terra, l’hai spaccata; risana le sue fratture, perché sta per crollare. 3 Hai fatto vedere al tuo popolo cose spiacevoli; ci hai dato da bere un vino che stordisce. 4 Ma ora, tu hai dato a quelli che ti temono una bandiera, perché si alzino in favore della verità. [Pausa] 5 Salvaci con la tua destra e rispondici, perché quelli che ami siano liberati. 6 Dio ha parlato dal suo santuario: «Io trionferò, spartirò Sichem e misurerò la valle di Succot. 7 Mio è Galaad, mio è Manasse, Efraim è l’elmo del mio capo, Giuda è il mio scettro. 8 Moab è il catino in cui mi lavo; sopra Edom getterò il mio sandalo; o Filistia, fammi acclamazioni!» 9 Chi mi condurrà nella città forte? Chi mi condurrà fino a Edom? 10 Non sarai forse tu, o Dio, che ci hai respinti e non esci più, o Dio, con i nostri eserciti? 11 Dacci aiuto per superare le difficoltà, poiché vano è il soccorso dell’uomo. 12 Con Dio noi faremo prodigi, egli schiaccerà i nostri nemici.
