1Now King David was old and advanced in years. And although they covered him with clothes, he could not get warm.2Therefore his servants said to him, “Let a young woman be sought for my lord the king, and let her wait on the king and be in his service. Let her lie in your arms,[1] that my lord the king may be warm.”3So they sought for a beautiful young woman throughout all the territory of Israel, and found Abishag the Shunammite, and brought her to the king. (Jos 19:18)4The young woman was very beautiful, and she was of service to the king and attended to him, but the king knew her not.
Adonijah Sets Himself Up as King
5Now Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, “I will be king.” And he prepared for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him. (2Sa 3:4; 2Sa 15:1)6His father had never at any time displeased him by asking, “Why have you done thus and so?” He was also a very handsome man, and he was born next after Absalom. (2Sa 3:3; 2Sa 3:4; 1Ch 3:2)7He conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest. And they followed Adonijah and helped him. (2Sa 2:13; 2Sa 2:18; 2Sa 20:25)8But Zadok the priest and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and Nathan the prophet and Shimei and Rei and David’s mighty men were not with Adonijah. (2Sa 8:18; 2Sa 12:1; 2Sa 23:8; 1Ki 1:7; 1Ki 4:18)9Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen, and fattened cattle by the Serpent’s Stone, which is beside En-rogel, and he invited all his brothers, the king’s sons, and all the royal officials of Judah, (Jos 15:7; 2Sa 17:17)10but he did not invite Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the mighty men or Solomon his brother. (2Sa 12:24)
Nathan and Bathsheba Before David
11Then Nathan said to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, “Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith has become king and David our lord does not know it? (1Ki 1:5)12Now therefore come, let me give you advice, that you may save your own life and the life of your son Solomon.13Go in at once to King David, and say to him, ‘Did you not, my lord the king, swear to your servant, saying, “Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne”? Why then is Adonijah king?’ (1Ki 1:30; 1Ch 22:9)14Then while you are still speaking with the king, I also will come in after you and confirm[2] your words.”15So Bathsheba went to the king in his chamber (now the king was very old, and Abishag the Shunammite was attending to the king).16Bathsheba bowed and paid homage to the king, and the king said, “What do you desire?”17She said to him, “My lord, you swore to your servant by the LORD your God, saying, ‘Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne.’ (1Ki 1:13)18And now, behold, Adonijah is king, although you, my lord the king, do not know it.19He has sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the sons of the king, Abiathar the priest, and Joab the commander of the army, but Solomon your servant he has not invited. (1Ki 1:7; 1Ki 1:9; 1Ki 1:10)20And now, my lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.21Otherwise it will come to pass, when my lord the king sleeps with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon will be counted offenders.” (De 31:16; 2Sa 7:12; 1Ki 2:10)22While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet came in.23And they told the king, “Here is Nathan the prophet.” And when he came in before the king, he bowed before the king, with his face to the ground.24And Nathan said, “My lord the king, have you said, ‘Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne’?25For he has gone down this day and has sacrificed oxen, fattened cattle, and sheep in abundance, and has invited all the king’s sons, the commanders[3] of the army, and Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, and saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’ (1Sa 10:24; 1Ki 1:19)26But me, your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon he has not invited. (1Ki 1:10; 1Ki 1:32)27Has this thing been brought about by my lord the king and you have not told your servants who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?”
Solomon Anointed King
28Then King David answered, “Call Bathsheba to me.” So she came into the king’s presence and stood before the king.29And the king swore, saying, “As the LORD lives, who has redeemed my soul out of every adversity, (Ru 3:13)30as I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel, saying, ‘Solomon your son shall reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne in my place,’ even so will I do this day.” (1Ki 1:13)31Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the ground and paid homage to the king and said, “May my lord King David live forever!” (Ne 2:3; Da 2:4; Da 3:9; Da 5:10; Da 6:6; Da 6:21)32King David said, “Call to me Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada.” So they came before the king.33And the king said to them, “Take with you the servants of your lord and have Solomon my son ride on my own mule, and bring him down to Gihon. (2Sa 11:11; 2Sa 20:6; 2Ch 32:30; 2Ch 33:14)34And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet there anoint him king over Israel. Then blow the trumpet and say, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ (1Sa 10:1; 1Sa 10:24; 2Sa 15:10; 2Ki 9:13; 2Ki 11:14)35You shall then come up after him, and he shall come and sit on my throne, for he shall be king in my place. And I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.”36And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, “Amen! May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, say so.37As the LORD has been with my lord the king, even so may he be with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord King David.” (1Sa 20:13; 1Ki 1:47)38So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule and brought him to Gihon. (2Sa 8:18)39There Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!” (Ex 30:23; 1Ki 1:34; 1Ch 29:22; Ps 89:20)40And all the people went up after him, playing on pipes, and rejoicing with great joy, so that the earth was split by their noise.41Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they finished feasting. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, “What does this uproar in the city mean?”42While he was still speaking, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came. And Adonijah said, “Come in, for you are a worthy man and bring good news.” (2Sa 15:27; 2Sa 15:36; 2Sa 17:17; 2Sa 18:27)43Jonathan answered Adonijah, “No, for our lord King David has made Solomon king,44and the king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites. And they had him ride on the king’s mule. (1Ki 1:38)45And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon, and they have gone up from there rejoicing, so that the city is in an uproar. This is the noise that you have heard. (1Ki 1:33)46Solomon sits on the royal throne. (1Ch 29:23)47Moreover, the king’s servants came to congratulate our lord King David, saying, ‘May your God make the name of Solomon more famous than yours, and make his throne greater than your throne.’ And the king bowed himself on the bed. (Ge 47:31; 1Ki 1:37)48And the king also said, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has granted someone[4] to sit on my throne this day, my own eyes seeing it.’” (1Ki 3:6; Ps 132:11; Ps 132:12)49Then all the guests of Adonijah trembled and rose, and each went his own way.50And Adonijah feared Solomon. So he arose and went and took hold of the horns of the altar. (Ex 27:2; 1Ki 2:28)51Then it was told Solomon, “Behold, Adonijah fears King Solomon, for behold, he has laid hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon swear to me first that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.’”52And Solomon said, “If he will show himself a worthy man, not one of his hairs shall fall to the earth, but if wickedness is found in him, he shall die.” (1Sa 14:45)53So King Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and paid homage to King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, “Go to your house.”

King James Version
1Now king David was old and stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.2Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.3So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.4And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.5Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.6And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man ; and his mother bare him after Absalom.7And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him .8But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.9And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren the king' sons, and all the men of Judah the king' servants:10But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.11Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth it not?12Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.13Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?14Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.15And Bathsheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.16And Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?17And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine handmaid, saying , Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.18And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest it not:19And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.20And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.21Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.22And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.23And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.24And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?25For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king' sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.26But me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.27Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?28Then king David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the king' presence, and stood before the king.29And the king sware, and said, As the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,30Even as I sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day.31Then Bathsheba bowed with her face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.32And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.33The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:34And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.35Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.36And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the LORD God of my lord the king say so too .37As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.38So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David' mule, and brought him to Gihon.39And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.40And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.41And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar?42And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou art a valiant man, and bringest good tidings.43And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.44And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king' mule:45And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This is the noise that ye have heard.46And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.47And moreover the king' servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.48And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it .49And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.50And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.51And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me to day that he will not slay his servant with the sword.52And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.53So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
