Tell the Coming Generation

1 A Maskil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my teaching; incline your ears to the words of my mouth! (Ps 49:1; Ps 50:1; Ps 50:7; Isa 51:4) 

2 I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old, (Nu 21:27; Ps 49:4; Mt 13:35) 

3 things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. (Ps 44:1) 

4 We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. (Ex 12:26; Ex 13:8; Ex 13:14; De 11:19; Jos 4:6; Job 15:18; Ps 78:11; Ps 78:32; Joe 1:3) 

5 He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, (Ps 19:7; Ps 81:5; Ps 147:19) 

6 that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, (Ps 78:4; Ps 102:18) 

7 so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments; (Ps 77:12; Ps 105:45) 

8 and that they should not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation whose heart was not steadfast, whose spirit was not faithful to God. (Ex 32:9; Ex 33:3; De 9:7; De 9:24; De 31:27; 2Ki 17:14; 2Ch 30:7; Job 11:13; Ps 78:37; Jer 5:23; Eze 20:18) 

9 The Ephraimites, armed with the bow, turned back on the day of battle. (Ps 78:57) 

10 They did not keep God’s covenant, but refused to walk according to his law. (2Ki 17:15) 

11 They forgot his works and the wonders that he had shown them. (Ps 78:4; Ps 106:13) 

12 In the sight of their fathers he performed wonders in the land of Egypt, in the fields of Zoan. (Nu 13:22; Ps 72:18; Ps 78:43; Isa 19:11; Isa 19:13; Eze 30:14) 

13 He divided the sea and let them pass through it, and made the waters stand like a heap. (Ex 14:21; Ex 15:8; Ps 136:13) 

14 In the daytime he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a fiery light. (Ps 105:39) 

15 He split rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep. (Ex 17:6; Ps 78:20; Ps 105:41; Ps 114:8; Isa 48:21) 

16 He made streams come out of the rock and caused waters to flow down like rivers. (Nu 20:8; Nu 20:10) 

17 Yet they sinned still more against him, rebelling against the Most High in the desert. (De 9:22; Ps 78:40; Ps 78:56; Isa 63:10) 

18 They tested God in their heart by demanding the food they craved. (De 6:16; Ps 78:41; Ps 78:56; Ps 95:9; Ps 106:14; 1Co 10:9) 

19 They spoke against God, saying, “Can God spread a table in the wilderness? (Ex 16:3; Nu 11:4; Nu 20:3; Nu 21:5; Ps 23:5) 

20 He struck the rock so that water gushed out and streams overflowed. Can he also give bread or provide meat for his people?” (Ps 78:15) 

21 Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was full of wrath; a fire was kindled against Jacob; his anger rose against Israel, (Nu 11:1) 

22 because they did not believe in God and did not trust his saving power. (Ps 78:8; Ps 78:32; Ps 78:37) 

23 Yet he commanded the skies above and opened the doors of heaven, (Ge 7:11; Mal 3:10)

25 Man ate of the bread of the angels; he sent them food in abundance. (Ps 78:29; Ps 103:20)

30 But before they had satisfied their craving, while the food was still in their mouths, (Nu 11:33; Job 20:23) 

31 the anger of God rose against them, and he killed the strongest of them and laid low the young men of Israel. (Ps 78:63; Isa 10:16) 

32 In spite of all this, they still sinned; despite his wonders, they did not believe. (Nu 14:11; Ps 78:22) 

33 So he made their days vanish like a breath, and their years in terror. (Nu 14:29; Nu 14:35; Nu 26:64; Ps 39:5) 

34 When he killed them, they sought him; they repented and sought God earnestly. (Ho 5:15) 

35 They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer. (Ex 15:13; De 32:4; De 32:15; De 32:31; Ps 74:2) 

36 But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues. (Isa 29:13; Isa 57:11; Eze 33:31) 

37 Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not faithful to his covenant. (Ps 51:10; Ps 78:8) 

38 Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath. (Ex 34:6; Nu 14:20) 

39 He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again. (Ge 6:3; Job 7:7; Job 10:9; Ps 103:14) 

40 How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness and grieved him in the desert! (Ps 78:17; Ps 78:56; Ps 106:14; Ps 107:11; Eph 4:30) 

41 They tested God again and again and provoked the Holy One of Israel. (Ps 71:22; Ps 78:18) 

42 They did not remember his power or the day when he redeemed them from the foe, (Jud 8:34) 

43 when he performed his signs in Egypt and his marvels in the fields of Zoan. (Ex 4:21; Ex 7:3; Ex 11:9; Ps 78:12; Ps 105:27; Ps 106:22; Ac 7:36) 

44 He turned their rivers to blood, so that they could not drink of their streams. (Ex 7:17) 

45 He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them, and frogs, which destroyed them. (Ex 8:2; Ex 8:21) 

46 He gave their crops to the destroying locust and the fruit of their labor to the locust. (Ex 10:12) 

47 He destroyed their vines with hail and their sycamores with frost. (Ex 9:23) 

48 He gave over their cattle to the hail and their flocks to thunderbolts. (Ex 9:19) 

49 He let loose on them his burning anger, wrath, indignation, and distress, a company of destroying angels. (Ex 12:13; Ex 12:23; 2Sa 24:16) 

50 He made a path for his anger; he did not spare them from death, but gave their lives over to the plague. 

51 He struck down every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham. (Ex 12:29; Ps 105:23; Ps 105:27; Ps 105:36; Ps 106:22; Ps 135:8; Ps 136:10) 

52 Then he led out his people like sheep and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. (Ps 77:20) 

53 He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. (Ex 14:13; Ex 14:19; Ex 14:27; Ex 15:10) 

54 And he brought them to his holy land, to the mountain which his right hand had won. (Ex 15:17; Ps 68:16; Ps 74:2; Isa 11:9; Isa 57:13) 

55 He drove out nations before them; he apportioned them for a possession and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents. (Jos 23:4; Ps 44:2; Ps 135:12; Ps 136:21; Ac 13:19) 

56 Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God and did not keep his testimonies, (Jud 2:11; Ps 78:18; Ps 78:40) 

57 but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers; they twisted like a deceitful bow. (Ps 78:9; Ho 7:16) 

58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places; they moved him to jealousy with their idols. (Le 26:30; Nu 25:11; De 7:5; De 7:25; De 12:2; De 12:3; De 31:29; De 32:16; De 32:21; Jud 2:12; 1Ki 11:7; 1Ki 12:31; Eze 20:28) 

59 When God heard, he was full of wrath, and he utterly rejected Israel. (De 3:26; Ps 78:62; Ps 106:40) 

60 He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh, the tent where he dwelt among mankind, (Jos 18:1; 1Sa 4:11; Jer 7:12; Jer 7:14; Jer 26:6) 

61 and delivered his power to captivity, his glory to the hand of the foe. (1Sa 4:21; Ps 63:2; Ps 96:6; Ps 132:8) 

62 He gave his people over to the sword and vented his wrath on his heritage. (1Sa 4:10; Ps 78:59) 

63 Fire devoured their young men, and their young women had no marriage song. (Ps 79:5; Ps 89:46; Jer 7:34) 

64 Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows made no lamentation. (1Sa 4:11; Job 27:15) 

65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a strong man shouting because of wine. (Ps 35:23; Ps 73:20) 

66 And he put his adversaries to rout; he put them to everlasting shame. (Ps 40:14) 

67 He rejected the tent of Joseph; he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim, (Ps 80:1; Ps 81:5) 

68 but he chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loves. (Ps 87:2) 

69 He built his sanctuary like the high heavens, like the earth, which he has founded forever. 

70 He chose David his servant and took him from the sheepfolds; (1Sa 16:12) 

71 from following the nursing ewes he brought him to shepherd Jacob his people, Israel his inheritance. (1Sa 10:1; 2Sa 5:2; 2Sa 7:8; Ps 28:9) 

72 With upright heart he shepherded them and guided them with his skillful hand. (1Ki 9:4; Ps 77:20; Ps 101:2)

Gottes Geschichte mit seinem Volk

1 Ein Gedicht Asafs. Mein Volk, höre auf meine Weisung! Ihr alle, gebt acht auf meine Worte! 

2 Ich will euch an frühere Zeiten erinnern, euch Gottes geheimnisvolle Führungen zeigen. 

3 Wir kennen das alles seit langen Jahren, weil wir immer wieder davon hörten, wenn unsere Väter es uns erzählten. (Ps 44:2) 

4 Wir wollen es unseren Kindern nicht verschweigen. Auch die kommende Generation soll hören von der Macht des HERRN, von seinen Wundern, von allen Taten, für die wir ihn preisen. (De 4:9) 

5 Er hat mit Israel einen Bund geschlossen, den Nachkommen Jakobs seine Weisungen gegeben. Er hat unseren Vorfahren befohlen, ihren Kindern davon zu erzählen, 

6 damit auch die folgende Generation es erfährt, die Kinder, die noch geboren werden. Und wenn sie selbst Eltern geworden sind, sollen sie es weitergeben an ihre Kinder. 

7 Sie sollen auf Gott vertrauen, seine Taten nie vergessen und seine Gebote treu befolgen. 

8 Sie sollen nicht ihren Vorfahren gleichen, der Generation von widerspenstigen Rebellen, unzuverlässig und unbeständig, untreu gegenüber Gott. 

9 – Die Männer von Efraïm, mit Pfeilen und Bogen gerüstet, ergriffen am Tag des Kampfes die Flucht. – 

10 Sie hielten sich nicht an den Bund mit Gott und weigerten sich, seiner Weisung zu gehorchen. 

11 Sie vergaßen die machtvollen Wunder, die er vor ihren Augen getan hatte. 

12 In Ägypten, in der Gegend von Zoan, vor den Augen ihrer Väter, vollbrachte Gott gewaltige Taten: 

13 Er zerteilte das Meer und ließ sie hindurchziehen; er türmte das Wasser auf wie einen Damm. (Ex 14:21) 

14 Tagsüber leitete er sie mit einer Wolke und in der Nacht mit hellem Feuerschein. (Ex 13:21) 

15 In der Wüste spaltete er Felsen und ließ sie Wasser aus der Tiefe trinken. (Ex 17:6; Nu 20:11) 

16 Aus hartem Gestein brachen Bäche hervor und stürzten mit mächtigem Schwall herab. 

17 Sie aber sündigten weiter gegen den Höchsten, sie widersetzten sich ihm dort im dürren Land. (Ex 16:3; Nu 11:4) 

18 Sie wagten es, Gott auf die Probe zu stellen, als sie Nahrung verlangten nach ihrem Geschmack. 

19 Sie zweifelten an ihm und sagten: »Bringt Gott es etwa fertig, uns hier in der Wüste den Tisch zu decken? 

20 Es ist wahr, er hat den Felsen geschlagen und das Wasser strömte in Bächen heraus. Aber kann er uns auch Brot besorgen? Kann er Fleisch herbeibringen für sein Volk?« 

21 Als der HERR sie so reden hörte, wurde er zornig auf die Nachkommen Jakobs, sein Zorn traf Israel wie ein Feuer. (Nu 11:1) 

22 Sie hatten ihrem Gott nicht vertraut und nicht mit seiner Hilfe gerechnet. 

23 Trotzdem gab er den Wolken Befehl und öffnete die Himmelstore: (Ex 16:4; Ex 16:13; Ex 16:31) 

24 Er ließ das Manna auf sie regnen, er gab ihnen das Korn des Himmels zu essen. 

25 Sie alle aßen das Brot der Engel; Gott schickte ihnen Nahrung und machte sie satt. 

26 Am Himmel setzte er den Ostwind frei, er zwang den Südwind heranzustürmen. (Ex 16:13) 

27 Dann ließ er Fleisch auf sie regnen wie Staub, Vögel, so zahlreich wie Sand am Meer. 

28 Mitten ins Lager ließ er sie fallen, rings um die Zelte der Israeliten. 

29 Sie aßen und wurden mehr als satt; Gott gab ihnen, was sie gefordert hatten, 

30 doch ihre Gier war noch nicht gestillt. Sie hatten das Fleisch noch zwischen den Zähnen, (Nu 11:33) 

31 da wurde Gott zornig auf sie und schlug zu, ihre jungen, starken Männer tötete er. 

32 Aber trotz allem sündigten sie weiter, sie schenkten seinen Wundern kein Vertrauen. 

33 Da nahm er ihrem Leben Sinn und Ziel und ließ sie vergehen in Angst und Schrecken. 

34 Immer wenn Gott einige tötete, begannen die anderen, nach ihm zu fragen, sie wandten sich ihm zu und suchten ihn. 

35 Sie erinnerten sich: Gott war doch ihr Beschützer, er, der Höchste, war ihr Befreier. 

36 Aber alles war Heuchelei; was ihr Mund ihm sagte, war gelogen. 

37 Ihr Herz hielt nicht entschieden zu ihm, sie standen nicht treu zu seinem Bund. 

38 Trotzdem blieb er voll Erbarmen: Er tilgte sie nicht aus, sondern tilgte ihre Schuld. Oft genug verschonte er sie und hielt seinen Zorn im Zaum. (Ps 103:12) 

39 Er wusste ja, sie waren Geschöpfe, vergänglich wie ein Windhauch, der verweht und niemals wiederkehrt. (Ps 39:5) 

40 Wie oft widersetzten sie sich ihm in der Wüste und forderten seinen Zorn heraus! 

41 Immer wieder stellten sie ihn auf die Probe und kränkten ihn, den heiligen Gott Israels. 

42 Sie vergaßen seine großen Taten und den Tag der Befreiung von ihren Feinden. 

43 Damals gab er den Ägyptern Beweise seiner Macht, in der Gegend von Zoan vollbrachte er Wunder. (Ex 7:1; Ex 12:29) 

44 Er verwandelte die Ströme und Bäche in Blut, sodass niemand mehr daraus trinken konnte. 

45 Er schickte den Feinden Ungeziefer, das sie quälte, und Frösche, die ihr Land verseuchten. 

46 Ihre Ernte lieferte er den Heuschrecken aus, die fraßen den Ertrag ihrer Arbeit. 

47 Er zerschlug ihre Reben durch Hagel, ihre Feigen durch riesige Hagelkörner. 

48 Auch ihr Vieh gab er dem Hagel preis und ihre Herden den Blitzen. 

49 Er ließ seinen glühenden Zorn auf sie los, rasende Wut und furchtbare Plagen, ein ganzes Heer von Unglücksengeln. 

50 Er ließ seinem Zorn freien Lauf; er bewahrte sie nicht länger vor dem Tod, sondern lieferte sie aus an die Pest. 

51 Er tötete jeden erstgeborenen Sohn in den Häusern der Ägypter, der Nachkommen Hams. 

52 Dann führte er sein Volk hinaus wie eine Herde von Schafen und leitete sie auf dem Weg durch die Wüste. 

53 Er führte sie sicher, sie hatten nichts zu fürchten, aber ihre Feinde bedeckte das Meer. (Ex 14:28) 

54 Er brachte sie in sein heiliges Land, zu dem Berg, den er selbst erobert hatte. (Jos 23:3; Jos 24:8) 

55 Vor ihnen her vertrieb er die Völker; das Land verloste er unter die Seinen und gab es ihnen als Erbbesitz. In den Häusern der Kanaaniter ließ er die Stämme Israels wohnen. 

56 Sie aber forderten den Höchsten heraus, sie richteten sich nicht nach Gottes Geboten. (Jud 2:11) 

57 Sie kehrten sich ab und verrieten ihn genauso wie früher ihre Väter, unzuverlässig wie ein Bogen, dessen Sehne reißt. 

58 Sie ärgerten ihn mit ihren Opferstätten und reizten ihn mit Götzenbildern. 

59 Gott sah das alles und wurde zornig, er ließ die Israeliten im Stich. 

60 Das Zelt, das er bei ihnen aufgeschlagen hatte, seine Wohnung in Schilo, gab er auf. (Jos 18:1) 

61 Den Feinden erlaubte er, die Bundeslade zu entführen, das Zeichen seiner Macht und Hoheit. (1Sa 4:17) 

62 Er war so zornig auf sein eigenes Volk, dass er es dem Schwert der Feinde preisgab. 

63 Das Feuer fraß die jungen Männer, den Mädchen sang niemand mehr das Hochzeitslied. 

64 Die Priester wurden mit dem Schwert getötet und die Witwen konnten keine Totenklage halten. 

65 Da wachte der Herr auf, geradeso als hätte er geschlafen, wie ein Krieger, der seinen Rausch abschüttelt. (2Sa 7:8) 

66 Er schlug seine Feinde in die Flucht, bedeckte sie mit unauslöschlicher Schande. 

67 Die Nachkommen Josefs verwarf er, den Stamm Efraïm lehnte er als Führer ab. 

68 Doch den Stamm Juda erwählte er und den Berg Zion, den er liebte. 

69 Dort hat er seinen Tempel gebaut, hoch wie der Himmel und fest wie die Erde, die er gegründet hat für alle Zeiten. 

70 Er erwählte David als seinen Vertrauten. Er holte ihn von den Weideplätzen, 

71 vom Hüten der Herde rief er ihn weg und machte ihn zum König Israels, zum Hirten über Gottes eigenes Volk. 

72 Und David sorgte für sie mit redlichem Herzen, er leitete sie mit kluger Hand.
