1 At that time Joshua summoned the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, 2 and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you and have obeyed my voice in all that I have commanded you. (Nu 32:20; De 3:18; Jos 1:16) 3 You have not forsaken your brothers these many days, down to this day, but have been careful to keep the charge of the Lord your God. 4 And now the Lord your God has given rest to your brothers, as he promised them. Therefore turn and go to your tents in the land where your possession lies, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. (Jos 11:23; Jos 13:8) 5 Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” (De 6:5; De 6:6; De 6:17; De 10:12; De 11:1; De 11:13; De 11:22; Jos 23:11) 6 So Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents. (Jos 14:13) 7 Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, but to the other half Joshua had given a possession beside their brothers in the land west of the Jordan. And when Joshua sent them away to their homes and blessed them, (Jos 17:5) 8 he said to them, “Go back to your tents with much wealth and with very much livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, and iron, and with much clothing. Divide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.” (Nu 31:27; 1Sa 30:24) 9 So the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home, parting from the people of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, their own land of which they had possessed themselves by command of the Lord through Moses. (Nu 32:1; Nu 32:26; Nu 32:29) 10 And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size. 11 And the people of Israel heard it said, “Behold, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built the altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the people of Israel.” (De 13:12) 12 And when the people of Israel heard of it, the whole assembly of the people of Israel gathered at Shiloh to make war against them. (Jud 20:1) 13 Then the people of Israel sent to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, (Ex 6:25; Nu 25:7; Jud 20:28) 14 and with him ten chiefs, one from each of the tribal families of Israel, every one of them the head of a family among the clans of Israel. (Nu 1:4) 15 And they came to the people of Reuben, the people of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, and they said to them, 16 “Thus says the whole congregation of the Lord, ‘What is this breach of faith that you have committed against the God of Israel in turning away this day from following the Lord by building yourselves an altar this day in rebellion against the Lord? (Le 17:8; Nu 14:9; De 12:13; Jos 22:18) 17 Have we not had enough of the sin at Peor from which even yet we have not cleansed ourselves, and for which there came a plague upon the congregation of the Lord, (Nu 25:3; De 4:3; Ps 106:28) 18 that you too must turn away this day from following the Lord? And if you too rebel against the Lord today then tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel. (Nu 16:22; Jos 22:16) 19 But now, if the land of your possession is unclean, pass over into the Lord’s land where the Lord’s tabernacle stands, and take for yourselves a possession among us. Only do not rebel against the Lord or make us as rebels by building for yourselves an altar other than the altar of the Lord our God. (Jos 18:1; Jos 22:16; Jos 22:18) 20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah break faith in the matter of the devoted things, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? And he did not perish alone for his iniquity.’” (Jos 7:1; Jos 7:5; Jos 22:18) 21 Then the people of Reuben, the people of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh said in answer to the heads of the families of Israel, 22 “The Mighty One, God, the Lord! The Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows; and let Israel itself know! If it was in rebellion or in breach of faith against the Lord, do not spare us today (De 10:17; 1Ki 8:39) 23 for building an altar to turn away from following the Lord. Or if we did so to offer burnt offerings or grain offerings or peace offerings on it, may the Lord himself take vengeance. (De 18:19; 1Sa 20:16) 24 No, but we did it from fear that in time to come your children might say to our children, ‘What have you to do with the Lord, the God of Israel? (Jos 4:6; Jos 4:21) 25 For the Lord has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you, you people of Reuben and people of Gad. You have no portion in the Lord.’ So your children might make our children cease to worship the Lord. 26 Therefore we said, ‘Let us now build an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice, 27 but to be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we do perform the service of the Lord in his presence with our burnt offerings and sacrifices and peace offerings, so your children will not say to our children in time to come, “You have no portion in the Lord.”’ (Ge 31:48; De 12:5; De 12:17; Jos 22:34; Jos 24:27) 28 And we thought, ‘If this should be said to us or to our descendants in time to come, we should say, “Behold, the copy of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us and you.”’ (Jos 22:27) 29 Far be it from us that we should rebel against the Lord and turn away this day from following the Lord by building an altar for burnt offering, grain offering, or sacrifice, other than the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tabernacle!” (Jos 22:16) 30 When Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation, the heads of the families of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the people of Manasseh spoke, it was good in their eyes. (Jos 22:13; Jos 22:33) 31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the people of Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is in our midst, because you have not committed this breach of faith against the Lord. Now you have delivered the people of Israel from the hand of the Lord.” (Le 26:11) 32 Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the chiefs, returned from the people of Reuben and the people of Gad in the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the people of Israel, and brought back word to them. (Jos 22:10; Jos 22:15) 33 And the report was good in the eyes of the people of Israel. And the people of Israel blessed God and spoke no more of making war against them to destroy the land where the people of Reuben and the people of Gad were settled. (Jos 22:30; 1Ch 29:20; Ne 8:6; Da 2:19; Lu 2:28) 34 The people of Reuben and the people of Gad called the altar Witness, “For,” they said, “it is a witness between us that the Lord is God.” (Jos 22:27)

1 Josua rief die Männer der Stämme Ruben, Gad und Ost-Manasse zusammen (Jos 1:12) 2 und sagte zu ihnen: »Ihr habt alles getan, was Mose, der Diener des HERRN, euch befohlen hatte, und habt stets meinen Anweisungen gehorcht. 3 Die ganze Zeit über habt ihr eure Brüder, die übrigen Israeliten, nicht im Stich gelassen und habt sorgfältig darauf geachtet, die Gebote des HERRN, eures Gottes, zu befolgen. 4 Jetzt aber hat der HERR euren Brüdern Ruhe und Frieden verschafft, wie er es versprochen hatte, und ihr dürft heimziehen in das Land, das Mose, der Diener des HERRN, euch auf der anderen Seite des Jordans gegeben hat. 5 Aber vergesst nie, was Mose euch eingeschärft hat, als er sagte: ›Ihr sollt den HERRN, euren Gott, lieben, auf seinen Wegen gehen, seine Gebote befolgen, ihm Treue halten und ihm dienen mit ganzem Herzen und allen euren Kräften.‹« (De 6:4) 6 Josua segnete sie zum Abschied und ließ sie nach Hause ziehen. 7 Der einen Hälfte des Stammes Manasse hatte Mose östlich des Jordans in der Landschaft Baschan Landbesitz gegeben, die andere Hälfte hatte ihren Anteil zusammen mit den übrigen Stämmen westlich des Jordans durch Josua bekommen. Josua entließ die Männer von Ost-Manasse mit einem Segenswunsch nach Hause (Jos 13:29; Jos 17:1) 8 und sagte noch zu ihnen: »Ihr kehrt reich beladen nach Hause zurück, mit Silber, Gold, Bronze, Eisen, mit vielen Kleidern und einer Menge Vieh. Teilt die Beute mit euren Stammesbrüdern!« 9 Die Männer der Stämme Ruben, Gad und Ost-Manasse zogen nun von den übrigen Israeliten weg. Von Schilo im Land Kanaan brachen sie auf, um ins Land Gilead zu ziehen. Dort lag der Landanteil, den der HERR ihnen durch Mose zugesprochen hatte und in dem sie sich schon früher angesiedelt hatten. 10 Als sie zu den Gelilot[1] in der Jordanebene kamen, bauten sie direkt am Fluss einen großen Altar, noch auf dieser Seite des Jordans im Land Kanaan. (Jos 15:7; Jos 18:17) 11 Bei den anderen Israeliten sprach es sich herum: »Die Männer von Ruben, Gad und Ost-Manasse haben bei den Gelilot am Jordan einen Altar gebaut, jenseits der Grenze des Landes Kanaan, nicht mehr im Gebiet Israels!« 12 Da kamen alle Männer Israels in Schilo zusammen, um gegen die Oststämme in den Kampf zu ziehen. (Jos 18:1) 13 Sie schickten eine Gesandtschaft zu den Männern von Ruben, Gad und Ost-Manasse nach Gilead: Pinhas, den Sohn des Priesters Eleasar, (Nu 25:7) 14 und dazu die zehn Oberhäupter der westlichen Stämme Israels, lauter Sippenälteste. 15-16 Sie kamen dorthin und fragten im Namen der ganzen Gemeinde des HERRN: »Warum habt ihr dem Gott Israels die Treue gebrochen und euch von ihm abgewandt? Ihr habt einen Altar gebaut; damit habt ihr ihm den Rücken gekehrt! (Le 17:8; De 12:13) 17 Reicht die Schuld noch nicht, die wir bei Pegor auf uns geladen haben und die bis heute auf uns liegt? Ihr wisst, dass der HERR deswegen die ganze Gemeinde gestraft hat. (Nu 25:1) 18 Und trotzdem wendet ihr euch jetzt von ihm ab! Seht ihr nicht, wie das ausgehen wird? Heute lehnt ihr euch gegen den HERRN auf und morgen wird sein Zorn die ganze Gemeinde Israel treffen. 19 Wenn ihr aber meint, dass euer Land unrein ist, dann kommt herüber zu uns in das Land des HERRN, wo er seine Wohnung aufgeschlagen hat. Siedelt euch doch bei uns an! Aber baut auf keinen Fall einen zweiten Altar neben dem Altar des HERRN, unseres Gottes! Damit lehnt ihr euch gegen den HERRN auf und zieht uns in eure Auflehnung mit hinein.[2] (Ex 25:8) 20 Denkt an Achan, den Sohn Serachs, der sich an der Beute vergriff, die der HERR zur Vernichtung bestimmt hatte. Er war nur ein einzelner Mann und doch wurde die ganze Gemeinde Israel dafür bestraft. Hat sein Vergehen ihn nicht das Leben gekostet?« (Jos 7:1) 21 Die Männer von Ruben, Gad und Ost-Manasse antworteten den zehn Stammesoberhäuptern: 22-23 »Gott, der Mächtige, der HERR – Gott, der Mächtige, der HERR –, er weiß es und ganz Israel soll es ebenfalls wissen: Uns trifft keine Schuld. Wenn wir diesen Altar gebaut haben, um uns vom HERRN abzuwenden und ihm die Treue zu brechen, dann soll der HERR uns heute nicht beistehen. Er selbst soll den Fall untersuchen. Wir hatten nie die Absicht, auf dem Altar irgendwelche Opfer darzubringen. 24 Vielmehr hatten wir Sorge, dass in Zukunft eure Nachkommen zu unseren Nachkommen sagen könnten: ›Was verbindet denn euch mit dem HERRN, dem Gott Israels? 25 Er hat doch zwischen euch und uns den Jordan als Grenze gesetzt! Also gehört ihr nicht zum Volk des HERRN!‹ So könnten dann eure Nachkommen die unseren daran hindern, dem HERRN unsere Opfer zu bringen. 26 Deshalb haben wir diesen Altar gebaut – nicht für Brand- oder Mahlopfer, 27 sondern als ein Zeichen, das zwischen uns und euch und zwischen unseren und euren Nachkommen aufgerichtet ist. Es soll bezeugen, dass wir tatsächlich das Recht haben, zum Heiligtum des HERRN zu kommen und ihm Brandopfer, Mahlopfer und andere Opfer darzubringen. Eure Nachkommen sollen nicht zu den unseren sagen dürfen, sie gehörten nicht zur Gemeinde des HERRN. (Jos 24:27; Isa 19:19) 28 Wenn es aber je so weit käme, sollten unsere Nachkommen sagen können: ›Seht diesen Altar! Unsere Vorfahren haben ihn genau nach dem Vorbild des Altars am Heiligtum des HERRN gebaut – nicht um Brand- oder Mahlopfer darzubringen, sondern als Zeichen, das unsere Zugehörigkeit zum HERRN bezeugt.‹ 29 Wir denken nicht entfernt daran, uns vom HERRN abzuwenden und neben dem Altar vor der Wohnung des HERRN, unseres Gottes, noch einen weiteren Altar zu bauen, auf dem Opfer dargebracht werden.« (De 12:4) 30 Der Priester Pinhas und die Abgeordneten der Gemeinde, die Oberhäupter der Stämme, ließen gelten, was die Männer der Stämme Ruben, Gad und Ost-Manasse zu ihrer Verteidigung vorbrachten. 31 Pinhas sagte: »Jetzt erkennen wir, dass der HERR in unserer Mitte ist und sich nicht von uns abgewandt hat. Ihr habt euch mit dem Bau dieses Altars nicht gegen den HERRN aufgelehnt und so habt ihr die Israeliten vor der Strafe des HERRN bewahrt.« 32 Dann kehrten Pinhas und die übrigen Abgesandten ins Land Kanaan zurück und berichteten alles den Israeliten. 33 Diese billigten das Verhalten der Männer von Ruben und Gad und priesen Gott. Sie sahen jetzt keinen Anlass mehr, gegen sie in den Kampf zu ziehen und ihr Land zu verwüsten. 34 Die Leute von Ruben und Gad aber gaben dem Altar einen Namen und erklärten: »Er ist ein Zeichen zwischen uns, das bezeugt, dass der HERR unser Gott ist.«
