1Hear the word that the Lord speaks to you, O house of Israel.2Thus says the Lord: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them,3for the customs of the peoples are vanity.[1] A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. (Isa 40:20; Isa 44:9; Isa 45:20)4They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. (Isa 40:19; Isa 41:7)5Their idols[2] are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. They are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith; their clothing is violet and purple; they are all the work of skilled men. (Ge 10:4; 1Ki 10:22; Ps 115:4; Isa 40:19; Da 10:5)10But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King. At his wrath the earth quakes, and the nations cannot endure his indignation. (De 32:4; Ps 31:5; Ps 42:2)11Thus shall you say to them: “The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens.”[3] (Ps 96:5; Isa 2:18; Jer 10:15; Zec 13:2)12It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens. He makes lightning for the rain, and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses. (Job 5:10; Job 38:22; Job 38:34; Ps 104:6; Ps 135:7; Jer 14:22)14Every man is stupid and without knowledge; every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols, for his images are false, and there is no breath in them. (Ps 135:17; Pr 30:2; Isa 42:17; Jer 10:8; Hab 2:19; Ro 1:22)15They are worthless, a work of delusion; at the time of their punishment they shall perish.16Not like these is he who is the portion of Jacob, for he is the one who formed all things, and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance; the Lord of hosts is his name. (Jer 1:13; Jer 9:11)23I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps. (Pr 16:1; Pr 20:24; Da 5:23)24Correct me, O Lord, but in justice; not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing. (Ps 6:1; Ps 38:1; Jer 30:11; Jer 46:28)25Pour out your wrath on the nations that know you not, and on the peoples that call not on your name, for they have devoured Jacob; they have devoured him and consumed him, and have laid waste his habitation. Sie mögen vor ungewöhnlichen Himmelserscheinungen erschrecken, du sollst das nicht!3Ihre Vorstellungen und Bräuche sind unsinnig: Da holt einer Holz aus dem Wald, der Schnitzer macht einen Gott daraus. (Isa 44:9)4Der wird mit Silber und Gold verziert und auf einem Sockel befestigt, damit er nicht umfällt.5Solche Götter stehen da wie Vogelscheuchen im Gurkenfeld. Sie bringen kein Wort heraus und müssen herumgetragen werden, weil sie von allein nicht laufen können. Habt keine Angst vor ihnen: Sie können euch nichts Böses tun! Und etwas Gutes zu bewirken, sind sie erst recht nicht imstande!« (Ps 115:5)6HERR, niemand ist dir gleich! Du bist mächtig und bekannt für deine Stärke. (Ps 86:8; Isa 40:18; Jer 49:19)7Wer wollte dich nicht fürchten und ehren, du König aller Völker? Darauf hast du ein Recht, denn unter allen Weisen und Königen der Welt kann niemand es mit dir aufnehmen.8Allesamt sind sie dumm und unverständig, denn bei ihren Göttern gibt es nichts zu lernen; die sind ja selber nur Holz.9Der Holzschnitzer hat sie gemacht. Mit Silberblech aus Tarschisch und Gold aus Ufas hat der Goldschmied sie überzogen. Dann bekamen sie auch noch Kleider aus blauem und rotem Purpurstoff. Alle diese Götter sind das Werk kunstfertiger Menschen.10Aber der HERR ist wirklich Gott, ein Gott, der lebt, König von jeher und für alle kommenden Zeiten! Wenn er zornig wird, bebt die Erde; seinem Unmut hält kein Volk stand. (Ps 18:8; Ps 47:6; Jer 4:26)11Angesichts der fremden Götter sollt ihr Leute von Israel sagen: »Die Götter, die weder Himmel noch Erde geschaffen haben, haben unter diesem Himmel auch nichts zu suchen und sollen von der Erde verschwinden!«12Der HERR hat die Erde geschaffen und dadurch seine Macht gezeigt: Das feste Land ist ein Werk seiner Weisheit, der Himmel darüber ein Beweis für sein überlegenes Können. (Ps 121:2; Isa 40:22; Jer 27:5; Jer 32:17)13Wenn er es befiehlt, sammelt sich mit Donnergetöse das Wasser am Himmel, Wolken steigen am Horizont auf, Blitze öffnen dem Regen die Bahn und der Wind bricht aus seinen Kammern hervor. (Job 38:22)14Kein Mensch kann das begreifen, sprachlos vor Staunen steht jeder davor. Und alle, die Götterbilder gemacht haben, müssen sich ihrer Machwerke schämen; denn diese Bilder sind Betrug, kein Hauch von Leben ist in ihnen. (Isa 45:16)15Wertlose Figuren sind sie, über die man spottet. Wenn der HERR Gericht hält, ist es aus mit ihnen.16Wie anders ist der Gott Israels![1] Er hat das Weltall geschaffen und das Volk Israel für immer zu seinem Eigentum gemacht. Sein Name ist »der HERR, der Herrscher der Welt«.[2] (Ge 1:1; Ex 19:5; Jer 50:34; Am 4:13)
Auf Jerusalems Bewohner wartet die Verbannung
17Jerusalem, du belagerte Stadt, deine Bewohner sollen ihre Habseligkeiten zusammenpacken!18Denn so spricht der HERR: »Es ist so weit! Diesmal treibe ich die Menschen dieses Landes weg in die Verbannung. Sie sollen in eine Bedrängnis geraten, aus der es keinen Ausweg mehr gibt.«[3]19Jerusalem klagt: »Ich unglückliche Stadt, ich bin tödlich getroffen, meine Wunde wird nicht mehr heilen. Ich hatte mir eingebildet, mein Leiden sei nicht so schlimm, es ließe sich ertragen. (Jer 8:22; Jer 14:19; Jer 15:18; Jer 30:12; Jer 30:15)20Doch jetzt ist mein Zelt verwüstet, alle Zeltstricke sind durchgeschnitten. Meine Kinder sehe ich nicht mehr; sie sind weggegangen. Niemand ist da, der mein Zelt wieder aufbaut und die Zeltdecken darüber spannt.«21So rächt sich der Unverstand der Hirten des Volkes. Sie haben sich nicht um den HERRN gekümmert, deshalb handelten sie ohne Einsicht und ihre Herde ging zugrunde. (Jer 3:15; Jer 23:1; Jer 50:6; Eze 34:1; Zec 11:16; Mr 6:34)22Horcht! Lärm ist zu hören! Er kommt näher! Ein Tosen und Dröhnen aus dem Land im Norden! Die feindlichen Heere rücken an! Sie machen die Städte in Juda zu öden Steinwüsten, zu einem Tummelplatz für Schakale! (Jer 1:14)
Jeremia betet für sein Volk
23HERR, ich sehe, dass der Mensch sein Geschick nicht selbst in der Hand hat. Nicht er ist’s, der seinen Lebensweg bestimmt. (Pr 16:1; Pr 16:9)24Strafe uns, HERR, aber bleibe gerecht; lass nicht deinem Zorn freien Lauf, denn das wäre unser Ende. (Jer 30:11)25Dein Zorn soll die Völker treffen, die von dir nichts wissen wollen. Denn wie Raubtiere ihre Beute fressen, so haben sie dein Volk gefressen, bis nichts mehr übrig war, und sein Land haben sie zur Wüste gemacht. (Ps 79:6; Jer 12:14; Jer 30:16)
