The Command to Leave Sinai

1 The Lord said to Moses, “Depart; go up from here, you and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give it.’ (Ge 12:7; Ex 32:7; Ex 32:13) 2 I will send an angel before you, and I will drive out the Canaanites, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. (Ex 13:5; Ex 14:19) 3 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.” (Ex 3:8; Ex 32:9; Ex 32:10; Ex 33:15; Nu 16:21; Nu 16:45)

4 When the people heard this disastrous word, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments. (Nu 14:39; Eze 24:17; Eze 24:23; Eze 26:16)

5 For the Lord had said to Moses, “Say to the people of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people; if for a single moment I should go up among you, I would consume you. So now take off your ornaments, that I may know what to do with you.’” (Ex 32:12; Ex 33:3; Ex 33:4) 6 Therefore the people of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments, from Mount Horeb onward.

The Tent of Meeting

7 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far off from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought the Lord would go out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp. (Ex 29:42; De 4:29; 2Sa 21:1; 1Ch 16:10; Ps 40:16)

8 Whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people would rise up, and each would stand at his tent door, and watch Moses until he had gone into the tent. (Nu 16:27) 9 When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent, and the Lord^[1] would speak with Moses. (Ex 13:21) 10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise up and worship, each at his tent door. 11 Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent. (Ge 32:30; Ex 17:9; Ex 24:13; Ex 32:17; Nu 12:8; De 34:10)

Moses’ Intercession

12 Moses said to the Lord, “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ (Ex 32:34; Ex 33:17) 13 Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.” (De 9:29; Ps 25:4; Ps 103:7; Joe 2:17)

15 And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. (Ex 33:1) 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? 21 And the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 1 Der HERR sprach zu Mose: Geh, zieh hinauf von hier, du und das Volk, das du aus dem Land Ägypten heraufgeführt hast, in das Land, von dem ich Abraham, Isaak und Jakob geschworen habe: Deinen Nachkommen werde ich es geben. 2 Ich sende einen Engel, der dir vorangeht, und ich vertreibe die Kanaaniter, Amoriter, Hetiter, Perisiter, Hiwiter und Jebusiter. 3 In ein Land, in dem Milch und Honig fließen, wirst du kommen. Ich selbst ziehe nicht in deiner Mitte hinauf, damit ich dich unterwegs nicht vertilge, denn du bist ein hartnäckiges Volk. 4 Als das Volk diese Drohung hörte, trauerten sie und keiner legte seinen Schmuck an. 5 Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Sag zu den Israeliten: Ihr seid ein hartnäckiges Volk. Wenn ich auch nur einen einzigen Augenblick mit dir zöge, müsste ich dir ein Ende machen. Jetzt aber leg deinen Schmuck ab! Dann will ich sehen, was ich mit dir tun kann. 6 Da legten die Israeliten ihren Schmuck ab, vom Berg Horeb an. 7 Mose nahm jeweils das Zelt und schlug es für sich außerhalb des Lagers auf, in einiger Entfernung vom Lager. Er nannte es Offenbarungszelt. Wenn einer den HERRN aufsuchen wollte, ging er zum Offenbarungszelt vor das Lager hinaus. 8 Wenn Mose zum Zelt hinausging, erhob sich das ganze Volk. Jeder trat vor sein Zelt und sie schauten Mose nach, bis er in das Zelt eintrat. 9 Sobald Mose das Zelt betrat, ließ sich die Wolkensäule herab und blieb am Zelteingang stehen. Dann redete der HERR mit Mose. 10 Wenn das ganze Volk die Wolkensäule am Zelteingang stehen sah, erhoben sich alle und warfen sich vor ihren Zelten zu Boden, jeder am Eingang seines Zeltes. 11 Der HERR und Mose redeten miteinander von Angesicht zu Angesicht, wie einer mit seinem Freund spricht. Mose ging ins Lager zurück, während sein Diener Josua, der Sohn Nuns, ein junger Mann, nicht vom Zelt wich. 12 Mose sagte zum HERRN: Siehe, du hast zwar zu mir gesagt: Führ dieses Volk hinauf! Du hast mich aber nicht wissen lassen, wen du mit mir sendest. Du hast doch gesagt: Ich habe dich mit Namen erkannt und du hast Gnade in meinen Augen gefunden. 13 Wenn ich wirklich Gnade in deinen Augen gefunden habe, so lass mich doch deine Wege erkennen, dass ich dich kenne und Gnade in deinen Augen finde, und siehe, diese Nation ist dein Volk! 14 Da sagte er: Mein Angesicht wird mitgehen, bis ich dir Ruhe verschafft habe. 15 Da entgegnete er ihm: Wenn dein Angesicht nicht mitginge, dann führe uns nicht von hier hinauf! 16 Woran soll man erkennen, dass ich Gnade in deinen Augen gefunden habe, ich und dein Volk? Doch wohl daran, dass du mit uns ziehst. Und dann werden wir, ich und dein Volk, vor allen Völkern auf der Erde ausgezeichnet werden. 17 Der HERR erwiderte Mose: Auch das, was du jetzt verlangt hast, will ich tun; denn du hast Gnade in meinen Augen gefunden und ich kenne dich mit Namen. 18 Dann sagte er: Lass mich doch deine Herrlichkeit schauen! 19 Da sagte er: Ich will meine ganze Güte vor dir vorüberziehen lassen und den Namen des HERRN vor dir ausrufen. Ich bin gnädig, wem ich gnädig bin, und ich bin barmherzig, wem ich barmherzig bin. 20 Weiter sprach er: Du kannst mein Angesicht nicht schauen; denn kein Mensch kann mich schauen und am Leben bleiben. 21 Dann sprach der HERR: Siehe, da ist ein Ort bei mir, stell dich da auf den Felsen! 22 Wenn meine Herrlichkeit vorüberzieht, stelle ich dich in den Felsspalt und halte meine Hand über dich, bis ich vorüber bin. 23 Dann ziehe ich meine Hand zurück und du wirst meinen Rücken sehen. Mein Angesicht kann niemand schauen.

L’Eternel n’ira pas avec le peuple

1 L’Eternel dit à Moïse: Va, quitte ce lieu, toi et le peuple que tu as fait sortir d’Egypte, et rendez-vous au pays que j’ai promis par serment à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob de donner à leurs descendants^[1]. (Ge 12:7; Ge 26:3; Ge 28:13; Ex 19:1; Nu 10:11)

2 J’enverrai un ange devant toi et je chasserai les Cananéens, les Amoréens, les Hittites, les Phéréziens, les Héviens et les Yebousiens. 3 Il vous conduira vers un pays ruisselant de lait et de miel. Pour moi, je n’irai pas au milieu de vous, car vous êtes un peuple rebelle et je pourrais vous exterminer pendant le voyage. 4 Lorsque le peuple entendit cette parole sévère, il prit le deuil: personne ne mit ses parures. 5 L’Eternel avait ordonné à Moïse de dire aux Israélites: Vous êtes un peuple rebelle; si je marchais au milieu de vous, ne fût-ce qu’un seul instant, je vous exterminerais. Otez donc vos parures et l’on verra comment je vais vous traiter. 6 Les Israélites enlevèrent leurs parures, à distance du mont Horeb.

La tente de la Rencontre

7 Moïse prit une tente et la dressa pour lui à l’extérieur du camp à une bonne distance. Il l’appelait tente de la Rencontre. Celui qui voulait consulter l’Eternel devait sortir du camp pour se rendre à la tente de la Rencontre. 8 Chaque fois que Moïse sortait pour aller à cette tente, le peuple se levait et chacun se tenait à l’entrée de sa tente pour suivre Moïse du regard jusqu’à ce qu’il soit entré dans la tente. 9 Dès qu’il y pénétrait, la colonne de nuée descendait et se tenait à l’entrée de la tente, et l’Eternel s’entretenait avec Moïse. 10 Tout le peuple voyait la colonne de nuée se tenir à l’entrée de la tente et le peuple tout entier se levait et se prosternait, chacun à l’entrée de sa tente. 11 L’Eternel s’entretenait avec Moïse directement comme un homme parle avec son ami. Puis Moïse regagnait le camp; mais son jeune assistant Josué, fils de Noun, restait dans la tente.

Moïse prie l’Eternel d’accompagner son peuple

12 Moïse dit à l’Eternel: Vois, tu me demandes de conduire ce peuple, mais tu ne me fais pas connaître qui tu enverras pour m’accompagner! Pourtant tu m’avais dit: « Je t’ai choisi personnellement et tu jouis de ma faveur. » 13 Maintenant, si réellement j’ai obtenu ta faveur, veuille me révéler tes intentions pour que je te connaisse. Alors j’aurai vraiment ta faveur. Et considère que ce peuple-là, c’est ton peuple! 14 Dieu répondit: Je marcherai moi-même avec toi, pour te rassurer. 15 Moïse reprit: Si tu ne viens pas toi-même avec nous, ne nous fais pas partir d’ici. 16 A quoi reconnaîtra-t-on que j’ai obtenu ta faveur, moi ainsi que ton peuple, sinon si tu marches avec nous, et si nous sommes ainsi distingués, moi et ton peuple, de tous les autres peuples sur la terre? 17 Alors l’Eternel répondit à Moïse: Même ce que tu viens de demander, je te l’accorde parce que tu jouis de ma faveur et que j’ai une relation particulière avec toi. 18 Moïse reprit: Permets-moi de contempler ta gloire! 19 Dieu lui répondit: Je ferai moi-même passer devant toi toute ma bonté et je proclamerai devant toi les qualités de l’Eternel. Je ferai grâce à qui je veux faire grâce, j’aurai compassion de qui je veux avoir compassion^[2]. (Ro 9:15) 20 Mais tu ne pourras pas voir ma face, car nul homme ne peut me voir et demeurer en vie. 21 L’Eternel dit encore: Il y a ici un lieu près de moi; tiens-toi debout sur le rocher, 22 et quand ma gloire passera, je te mettrai dans le creux du rocher et je te couvrirai de ma main, jusqu’à ce que j’aie passé. 23 Puis je retirerai ma main et tu me verras de dos, mais ma face ne pourra pas être vue.
