Amnon and Tamar

1 Now Absalom, David’s son, had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar. And after a time Amnon, David’s son, loved her. (2Sa 3:2; 1Ch 3:2; 1Ch 3:9) 2 And Amnon was so tormented that he made himself ill because of his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible to Amnon to do anything to her. 3 But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David’s brother. And Jonadab was a very crafty man. (1Sa 16:9; 1Sa 17:13; 1Ch 2:13) 4 And he said to him, “O son of the king, why are you so haggard morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom’s sister.” 5 Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. And when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’” 6 So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. And when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.” (Ge 18:6) 7 Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go to your brother Amnon’s house and prepare food for him.” 8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon’s house, where he was lying down. And she took dough and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight and baked the cakes. 9 And she took the pan and emptied it out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “Send out everyone from me.” So everyone went out from him. (Ge 45:1) 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother. 11 But when she brought them near him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.” 12 She answered him, “No, my brother, do not violate^[1] me, for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this outrageous thing. 13 As for me, where could I carry my shame? And as for you, you would be as one of the outrageous fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.” (2Sa 3:33) 14 But he would not listen to her, and being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her. 15 Then Amnon hated her with very great hatred, so that the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. And Amnon said to her, “Get up! Go!” 16 But she said to him, “No, my brother, for this wrong in sending me away is greater than the other that you did to me.”^[2] But he would not listen to her. 17 He called the young man who served him and said, “Put this woman out of my presence and bolt the door after her.” 18 Now she was wearing a long robe with sleeves,^[3] for thus were the virgin daughters of the king dressed. So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her. (Ge 37:3; Jud 5:30; Ps 45:14) 19 And Tamar put ashes on her head and tore the long robe that she wore. And she laid her hand on her head and went away, crying aloud as she went. (Jos 7:6; 2Sa 1:11; Jer 2:37) 20 And her brother Absalom said to her, “Has Amnon your brother been with you? Now hold your peace, my sister. He is your brother; do not take this to heart.” So Tamar lived, a desolate woman, in her brother Absalom’s house. 21 When King David heard of all these things, he was very angry.^[4] 22 But Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad, for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had violated his sister Tamar. (Ge 24:50; Ge 31:24)

Absalom Murders Amnon

23 After two full years Absalom had sheepshearers at Baal-hazor, which is near Ephraim, and Absalom invited all the king’s sons. (Ge 31:19; Ge 38:12; 1Sa 25:4) 24 And Absalom came to the king and said, “Behold, your servant has sheepshearers. Please let the king and his servants go with your servant.” 25 But the king said to Absalom, “No, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome to you.” He pressed him, but he would not go but gave him his blessing. 26 Then Absalom said, “If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us.” And the king said to him, “Why should he go with you?” 27 But Absalom pressed him until he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him. 28 Then Absalom commanded his servants, “Mark when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say to you, ‘Strike Amnon,’ then kill him. Do not fear; have I not commanded you? Be courageous and be valiant.” (Jud 19:6) 29 So the servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and each mounted his mule and fled. 30 While they were on the way, news came to David, “Absalom has struck down all the king’s sons, and not one of them is left.” 31 Then the king arose and tore his garments and lay on the earth. And all his servants who were standing by tore their garments. (2Sa 1:11; 2Sa 12:16) 32 But Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David’s brother, said, “Let not my lord suppose that they have killed all the young men, the king’s sons, for Amnon alone is dead. For by the command of Absalom this has been determined from the day he violated his sister Tamar. (2Sa 13:3) 33 Now therefore let not my lord the king so take it to heart as to suppose that all the king’s sons are dead, for Amnon alone is dead.” (2Sa 19:19)

Absalom Flees to Geshur

34 But Absalom fled. And the young man who kept the watch lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, many people were coming from the road behind him^[5] by the side of the mountain. (2Sa 13:37) 35 And Jonadab said to the king, “Behold, the king’s sons have come; as your servant said, so it has come about.” 36 And as soon as he had finished speaking, behold, the king’s sons came and lifted up their voice and wept. And the king also and all his servants wept very bitterly. 37 But Absalom fled and went to Talmai the son of Ammihud, king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son day after day. 38 So Absalom fled and went to Geshur, and was there three years. (2Sa 13:37) 39 And the spirit of the king^[6] longed to go out^[7] to Absalom, because he was comforted about Amnon, since he was dead. (Ge 24:67; Ge 37:35; Ge 38:12)

暗嫩玷污她玛

1 大卫的儿子押沙龙有一个美丽的妹妹，名叫她玛。大卫的另一个儿子暗嫩爱上了她。 2 她仍是处女，住在深宫里，暗嫩无法接近她，相思成病。 3 暗嫩有一个朋友名叫约拿达，是大卫长兄示米亚的儿子，生性狡猾。 4 他问暗嫩：“王子，你为什么一天比一天消沉？能告诉我吗？”暗嫩答道：“我爱上了我兄弟押沙龙的妹妹她玛。” 5 约拿达说：“你回去躺在床上装病，你父亲来探望你的时候，你就请求他叫你妹妹她玛来，在你面前预备食物，请她亲手递给你吃。” 6 暗嫩就躺在床上装病。王来看他的时候，他便对王说：“请你叫我妹妹她玛来这里，在我面前做两个饼，请她亲自递给我吃。” 7 大卫便派人进宫对她玛说：“你去你哥哥暗嫩房里为他预备食物吧。” 8 她玛到了哥哥暗嫩的家，暗嫩正躺在床上装病。她拿了面团在他面前揉面做饼，把饼烤熟了。 9 她拿着锅在他面前把饼倒出来，但暗嫩却不肯吃。暗嫩命令仆人：“你们全都出去吧！”仆人就都退下了。 10 暗嫩对她玛说：“你把食物拿到我的卧房来，亲手递给我吃。”她玛便拿着饼进了她哥哥暗嫩的卧房里， 11 服侍他吃饼，暗嫩却抓住她，说：“妹妹，与我同寝吧！” 12 她玛说：“哥哥，不要，不要玷污我！在以色列不应当发生这种事，不要做这种恶事。 13 你这样叫我怎么见人呢？你在以色列也必遭人唾弃。你可以请求王，他会同意把我许配给你。” 14 暗嫩却充耳不闻，因为他力气比她玛大，就把她强奸了。 15 事后暗嫩非常憎恨她玛，对她的恨比以前对她的爱还强烈。他对她玛说：“你起来走吧！” 16 她玛哀求道：“不要这样对我！你这样做是错上加错。”暗嫩却不听， 17 他吩咐随从：“把这女人赶出去，关上门不要让她进来。” 18 他的随从就把她玛赶出去，随后锁上了门。那时，她玛穿着彩色的长衣，没有出嫁的公主都穿这种衣服。 19 她玛把灰尘撒在头上，撕破身上的彩衣，双手抱着头，一面走一面哭。 20 她的哥哥押沙龙问她：“是不是你哥哥暗嫩污辱了你？妹妹，不要声张，他是你哥哥，不要把这件事放在心上。”于是她玛就忧忧郁郁地住在押沙龙家里。 21 大卫王听见了这件事以后，非常生气。 22 押沙龙没有对暗嫩说一句话，只是心里暗暗地恨他，因为他玷污了妹妹她玛。

押沙龙为妹妹报仇

23 两年后，押沙龙的工人在以法莲附近的巴力·夏琐剪羊毛，押沙龙邀请王的众子去那里。 24 他去见王，说：“我的工人正在剪羊毛，请王和众臣仆跟我一起去吧。” 25 王说：“我儿，我们不必都去打扰你。”押沙龙再三邀请，王还是推辞了，但他为押沙龙祝福。 26 押沙龙说：“倘若王不去，求你叫我兄弟暗嫩去吧。”大卫说：“何必要他同去呢？” 27 但押沙龙再三恳求，王就让暗嫩和其他王子一同去了。 28 押沙龙吩咐仆人说：“你们要留意，当暗嫩喝得正高兴的时候，我叫你们杀他，你们就要动手。不要畏缩，要刚强勇敢！因为这是我的命令。” 29 押沙龙的仆人就照命令把暗嫩杀了。王的众子都起来骑上骡子逃走了。 30 他们还在路上的时候，有人禀告大卫说：“押沙龙把王子都杀了，无一幸免！” 31 王便站起来撕裂衣服，躺在地上。他的臣仆也都撕裂衣服，站在旁边。 32 大卫的长兄示米亚的儿子约拿达说：“我主不要以为所有的王子都被杀了，其实只有暗嫩一人死了。自从暗嫩奸污押沙龙的妹妹她玛以来，押沙龙便决定要报仇了。 33 所以，我主我王啊，不要相信这消息，不是所有的王子都死了，只有暗嫩一人死了。” 34 此时，押沙龙已经逃走了。守卫的人举目瞭望，见有一大群人从山坡上跑来。 35 约拿达对大卫王说：“请看，王子们都回来了！正如仆人所言。” 36 话刚说完，众王子已经来到他们跟前放声大哭，王和臣仆也哀痛不已。 37-38 押沙龙逃到了亚米忽的儿子基述王达买那里，在那里住了三年。大卫王天天为他的儿子暗嫩悲伤， 39 后来心情恢复平静，开始想念押沙龙。
