The People Rebel

1 Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. (Nu 11:4) 

2 And all the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The whole congregation said to them, “Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! (Ex 15:24; Ex 16:2; Ex 17:3; Nu 14:27; Nu 14:29; Nu 14:33; Nu 16:41; Jos 9:18; Ps 106:25) 

3 Why is the LORD bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become a prey. Would it not be better for us to go back to Egypt?” (Nu 14:31) 

4 And they said to one another, “Let us choose a leader and go back to Egypt.” (De 17:16; Ne 9:17; Ac 7:39) 

5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the people of Israel. (Nu 16:4; Nu 16:22; Nu 20:6) 

6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their clothes (Nu 13:6; Nu 13:8; Nu 14:30) 

7 and said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceedingly good land. (Nu 13:27; De 1:25) 

8 If the LORD delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. (Ex 3:8; De 10:15; 2Sa 22:20; 1Ki 10:9; Ps 18:19; Ps 22:8; Isa 62:4) 

9 Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them.” (Nu 24:8; De 7:18; De 20:3; Jos 22:16; Jos 22:18; Jos 22:19; Jos 22:29; Ps 14:4; Ps 74:14) 

10 Then all the congregation said to stone them with stones. But the glory of the LORD appeared at the tent of meeting to all the people of Israel. (Ex 17:4; Le 9:23) 

11 And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will this people despise me? And how long will they not believe in me, in spite of all the signs that I have done among them? (Nu 14:23; Nu 16:30; De 1:32; De 9:23; Ps 78:22; Ps 78:32; Ps 106:24; Joh 12:37; Heb 3:18) 

12 I will strike them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and I will make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.” (Ex 32:10) 

Moses Intercedes for the People

13 But Moses said to the LORD, “Then the Egyptians will hear of it, for you brought up this people in your might from among them, (Ex 32:12; De 9:28; De 32:27; Ps 106:23; Eze 20:9; Eze 20:14) 

14 and they will tell the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, O LORD, are in the midst of this people. For you, O LORD, are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. (Ex 13:21; Ex 15:14; Jos 2:9; Jos 2:10; Jos 5:1) 

15 Now if you kill this people as one man, then the nations who have heard your fame will say, 

16 ‘It is because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’ (De 9:28; Jos 7:9) 

17 And now, please let the power of the Lord be great as you have promised, saying, 

18 ‘The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.’ (Ex 20:5; Ex 34:6; Ex 34:7) 

19 Please pardon the iniquity of this people, according to the greatness of your steadfast love, just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt until now.” (Ex 34:9; Ps 78:38; Ps 106:45) 

God Promises Judgment

20 Then the LORD said, “I have pardoned, according to your word. (Ps 106:23; Jas 5:16) 

21 But truly, as I live, and as all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD, (Ps 72:19; Hab 2:14) 

22 none of the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have put me to the test these ten times and have not obeyed my voice, (Ge 31:7; De 1:35; Job 19:3; Ps 95:11; Ps 106:26; Heb 3:17; Heb 3:18) 

23 shall see the land that I swore to give to their fathers. And none of those who despised me shall see it. (Nu 32:11; Eze 20:15) 

24 But my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has followed me fully, I will bring into the land into which he went, and his descendants shall possess it. (Nu 13:6; Nu 14:6; Nu 32:12; Jos 14:8; Jos 14:9) 

25 Now, since the Amalekites and the Canaanites dwell in the valleys, turn tomorrow and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.” (Nu 13:29; Nu 14:43; De 1:40) 

26 And the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 

27 “How long shall this wicked congregation grumble against me? I have heard the grumblings of the people of Israel, which they grumble against me. (Ex 16:7; Ex 16:12; Nu 14:35) 

28 Say to them, ‘As I live, declares the LORD, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you: (Nu 14:2; Nu 14:21; Nu 26:65) 

29 your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness, and of all your number, listed in the census from twenty years old and upward, who have grumbled against me, (Ex 30:14; Nu 1:3; Nu 1:45; Nu 26:64; De 1:35; 1Co 10:5; Heb 3:17) 

30 not one shall come into the land where I swore that I would make you dwell, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun. (Ge 1:1; Ge 14:22; Nu 13:6; Nu 14:6) 

31 But your little ones, who you said would become a prey, I will bring in, and they shall know the land that you have rejected. (Nu 14:3; De 1:39; Ps 106:24) 

32 But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. (Nu 14:29) 

33 And your children shall be shepherds in the wilderness forty years and shall suffer for your faithlessness, until the last of your dead bodies lies in the wilderness. (Nu 32:13; De 2:14; Ps 95:10; Ps 107:40; Eze 23:35) 

34 According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty days, a year for each day, you shall bear your iniquity forty years, and you shall know my displeasure.’ (Nu 13:25; Eze 4:6) 

35 I, the LORD, have spoken. Surely this will I do to all this wicked congregation who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall come to a full end, and there they shall die.” (Nu 14:27; Nu 23:19) 

36 And the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land, who returned and made all the congregation grumble against him by bringing up a bad report about the land— (Nu 13:32) 

37 the men who brought up a bad report of the land— died by plague before the LORD. (1Co 10:10; Heb 3:17; Jud 1:5) 

38 Of those men who went to spy out the land, only Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive. (Nu 13:16; Nu 26:65) 

Israel Defeated in Battle

39 When Moses told these words to all the people of Israel, the people mourned greatly. (Ex 33:4) 

40 And they rose early in the morning and went up to the heights of the hill country, saying, “Here we are. We will go up to the place that the LORD has promised, for we have sinned.” (De 1:41) 

41 But Moses said, “Why now are you transgressing the command of the LORD, when that will not succeed? (2Ch 24:20) 

42 Do not go up, for the LORD is not among you, lest you be struck down before your enemies. (De 1:42; De 31:17) 

43 For there the Amalekites and the Canaanites are facing you, and you shall fall by the sword. Because you have turned back from following the LORD, the LORD will not be with you.” (Nu 13:29; Nu 14:25) 

44 But they presumed to go up to the heights of the hill country, although neither the ark of the covenant of the LORD nor Moses departed out of the camp. (De 1:43; 1Sa 4:3) 

45 Then the Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and defeated them and pursued them, even to Hormah. (Nu 14:43; Nu 21:3; De 1:44; Jud 1:17)

1 当晚，全体会众放声大哭，整夜哀号。 

2 他们埋怨摩西和亚伦说：“我们还不如死在埃及或旷野！ 

3 耶和华为什么把我们领到这里来，让我们死于刀下？我们的妻儿必被掳去。我们还不如返回埃及。” 

4 他们彼此议论说：“我们选一位首领带我们回埃及吧！” 

5 摩西和亚伦俯伏在以色列全体会众面前。 

6 打探迦南的人中，嫩的儿子约书亚和耶孚尼的儿子迦勒撕裂衣服， 

7 对以色列全体会众说：“我们去打探的地方是佳美之地。 

8 如果耶和华喜悦我们，祂必把我们带到那片土地，将那奶蜜之乡赐给我们。 

9 你们不要背叛耶和华，也不要害怕那里的人，他们不过是我们的猎物，他们已失去庇护。耶和华与我们同在，不要怕他们。” 

10 但全体会众威胁要用石头打死他们二人。这时耶和华的荣光在会幕中向以色列人显现。 

11 耶和华对摩西说：“这些人藐视我要到何时呢？我在他们中间行了这么多神迹，他们仍然不相信我。 

12 我要用瘟疫毁灭他们，不让他们承受那片土地。但我要使你成为大国，比他们更强盛。” 

13 摩西对耶和华说：“你曾经用大能把以色列人从埃及领出来，埃及人听说这事后， 

14 一定会告诉迦南的居民。那里的居民早已听说你耶和华与以色列人同在，你面对面向他们显现，你的云彩停留在他们上面，你白天用云柱、黑夜用火柱引导他们。 

15 如果你把他们全部消灭，那些听过你威名的列国就会议论说， 

16 ‘耶和华无法把以色列人领到祂起誓要赐给他们的地方，所以在旷野把他们杀了。’ 

17 因此，求主彰显伟大的权能，正如你所宣告的， 

18 ‘耶和华不轻易发怒，充满慈爱；祂赦免罪恶和过犯，但决不免除罪责，必向子孙追讨父辈的罪债，直到三四代。’ 

19 从他们离开埃及直到现在，你一直在饶恕他们，求你以伟大的慈爱再次赦免这些人的罪。” 

20 耶和华说：“我听你的祈求，赦免他们。 

21 但我凭我的永恒起誓，正如大地充满我的荣耀一样确实， 

22-23 他们绝对看不到我起誓要赐给他们祖先的土地，藐视我的人都看不到那片土地。这些人见过我的荣耀，见过我在埃及和旷野所行的神迹，却仍然不听我的话，试探我十次之多。 

24 但我的仆人迦勒并非如此，他全心跟从我，所以我必带他进入那片他去过的土地，让他的子孙拥有那片产业。 

25 由于亚玛力人和迦南人住在山谷中，明天你们要转回，沿红海的路前往旷野。” 

26 耶和华对摩西和亚伦说： 

27 “这邪恶的会众向我发怨言要到何时呢？我已听见以色列人对我的埋怨。 

28 你们去把我的话告诉他们，‘以色列人啊，我凭我的永恒起誓，我必照你们所说的对待你们。 

29 你们当中凡登记在册、二十岁以上向我发怨言的人，必倒毙在这旷野中， 

30 除耶孚尼的儿子迦勒和嫩的儿子约书亚之外，你们无人能进入我起誓应许的那片土地。 

31 你们说你们的儿女会被掳去，但我要把他们带到那里，让他们享有那片你们厌弃的土地。 

32 而你们必死在这旷野。 

33 你们的儿女要在旷野飘泊四十年，为你们的不忠而受苦，直到你们都死在旷野。 

34 你们打探了那地方四十天，你们要为自己的罪受苦四十年，一年顶一天。那时，你们就知道与我为敌的后果。’ 

35 我耶和华已经说过。我必使你们这群与我为敌的恶人死在旷野，无一幸免。” 

36 摩西派去打探迦南的人回来以后危言耸听，以致会众向摩西发怨言。 

37 打探的人因而染上瘟疫，死在耶和华面前， 

38 只有嫩的儿子约书亚和耶孚尼的儿子迦勒得以幸免。 

39 摩西传达完耶和华的话后，以色列人非常悲伤。 

40 他们次日清早起来到山顶去，说：“我们知罪了，现在我们要去耶和华应许的地方。” 

41 摩西说：“你们为什么要违背耶和华的命令？你们不会成功的。 

42 不要去！耶和华已经不在你们中间，你们会被敌人打败。 

43 你们会遇见亚玛力人和迦南人，并丧身在他们刀下，因为你们离弃耶和华，祂不再与你们同在。” 

44 尽管耶和华的约柜和摩西都没有出营，他们却擅自上山顶去。 

45 住在山区的亚玛力人和迦南人下来击溃了他们，一路追杀他们到何珥玛。

Rebelión del pueblo

1 Entonces toda la asamblea levantó la voz y clamó, y el pueblo estuvo llorando aquella noche. 

2 Y todos los hijos de Israel murmuraron contra Moisés y Aarón, y toda la asamblea les dijo: ¡Ojalá hubiéramos muerto en la tierra de Egipto!, ¡Ojalá muriéramos en este desierto! 

3 ¿Para qué nos trae YHVH a esta tierra, para caer a espada, y que nuestras mujeres y nuestros pequeños sirvan de presa? ¿No nos sería mejor volvernos a Egipto? 

4 Y cada cual decía a su hermano: ¡Pongamos un caudillo y regresemos a Egipto! 

5 Entonces Moisés y Aarón cayeron sobre sus rostros en presencia de toda la asamblea de la congregación de los hijos de Israel. 

6 Y Josué ben Nun, y Caleb ben Jefone, que eran de los que habían explorado la tierra, rasgaron sus vestidos, 

7 y hablaron a toda la asamblea de los hijos de Israel, diciendo: La tierra por donde pasamos para explorarla es tierra extremadamente buena. 

8 Si YHVH se agrada de nosotros, Él nos introducirá en esa tierra, y nos la entregará. Es una tierra que fluye leche y miel. 

9 Pero no os rebeléis contra YHVH ni temáis a la gente del país, porque serán como nuestro pan. Su defensa se ha apartado de ellos, y YHVH está con nosotros. ¡No les tengáis temor! 

10 Pero la asamblea entera hablaba de lapidarlos. Entonces la gloria de YHVH se apareció en la Tienda de Reunión ante todos los hijos de Israel, 

11 y YHVH dijo a Moisés: ¿Hasta cuándo me despreciará este pueblo? ¿Hasta cuándo se negará a creer en mí, con todos los prodigios que he obrado en su seno? 

12 Lo heriré con pestilencia y lo desheredaré, y haré de ti una nación más grande y más fuerte que él. 

13 Pero Moisés dijo a YHVH: Se enterarán los egipcios, pues de en medio de ellos Tú sacaste a este pueblo con tu fuerza, 

14 y se lo dirán a los habitantes de esta tierra, pues ellos han oído que Tú, oh YHVH, estás en medio de este pueblo, que Tú, oh YHVH, te dejas ver cara a cara, que tu nube está sobre ellos, y que Tú marchas delante en columna de nube de día y en columna de fuego de noche. 

15 Si haces morir, pues, a este pueblo como un solo hombre, las gentes que han oído tu fama hablarán, diciendo: 

16 Porque no pudo YHVH introducir a este pueblo en la tierra que les había prometido con juramento, los ha matado en el desierto. 

17 Ahora pues, ¡engrandézcase, te ruego, el poder de mi Señor!, tal como hablaste, diciendo: 

18 YHVH, lento para la ira y grande en misericordia, que carga con la iniquidad y la transgresión, pero de ningún modo tiene por inocente al culpable y visita la iniquidad de los padres sobre los hijos, sobre terceros y cuartos. 

19 Perdona, te ruego, la iniquidad de este pueblo según la grandeza de tu misericordia, conforme has cargado con este pueblo desde Egipto hasta aquí. 

20 Y YHVH dijo: Lo perdono conforme a tu palabra. 

21 No obstante, tan cierto como Yo vivo, y la gloria de YHVH llena toda la tierra, 

22 que todos los hombres que vieron mi gloria y mis señales que hice en Egipto y en el desierto, y aun así me provocaron ya diez veces y no oyen mi voz, 

23 no verán la tierra sobre la cual juré a sus padres. Todos los que me despreciaron, no la verán. 

24 Pero a mi siervo Caleb, por cuanto hubo otro espíritu en él y fue íntegro conmigo, lo introduciré en la tierra donde entró, y su descendencia tomará posesión de ella, 

25 aunque el amalecita y el cananeo habiten en el valle. Regresad mañana y marchad al desierto por el camino del Mar Rojo. 

26 Y habló YHVH a Moisés y a Aarón, diciendo: 

27 ¿Hasta cuándo he de soportar a esta congregación perversa que murmura contra mí? He oído las murmuraciones de los hijos de Israel con que murmuran contra mí. 

28 Diles: Vivo Yo, dice YHVH, que tal como habéis hablado a mis oídos, así haré Yo con vosotros. 

29 Vuestros cuerpos caerán en este desierto, y todos vuestros censados, según todos los que habéis contado de veinte años arriba, que habéis murmurado contra mí, 

30 no entraréis en la tierra por la cual alcé mi mano para jurar que os haría morar en ella, excepto Caleb ben Jefone y Josué ben Nun. 

31 Pero vuestros pequeños, que dijisteis: ¡Llegarán a ser presa! Yo los introduciré, y conocerán la tierra que vosotros habéis despreciado. 

32 En cuanto a vosotros, vuestros cadáveres yacerán en este desierto, 

33 y vuestros hijos deambularán en el desierto cuarenta años, y ellos cargarán con vuestras fornicaciones, hasta que vuestros cadáveres sean deshechos en el desierto. 

34 Por el número de los días, de los cuarenta días en que explorasteis la tierra, cargaréis con vuestras iniquidades cuarenta años, un año por cada día, y conoceréis mi disgusto. 

35 Yo, YHVH, he hablado. ¿Acaso no he de hacer esto a toda esta congregación perversa que se confabuló contra mí? En este desierto se consumirán, y allí morirán. 

36 Y los hombres que Moisés había enviado a explorar la tierra y que, vueltos, habían hecho murmurar contra él a toda la congregación, al difamar aquella tierra, 

37 aquellos hombres, pues, que habían difamado la tierra perversamente, murieron a causa de una plaga en presencia de YHVH. 

38 Sólo Josué ben Nun y Caleb ben Jefone quedaron con vida de entre aquellos hombres que habían ido a explorar la tierra. 

39 Cuando Moisés refirió esas palabras a todos los hijos de Israel, el pueblo se afligió en gran manera. 

40 Y levantándose temprano por la mañana, subieron a la cumbre del monte, diciendo: Aquí estamos, subiremos al lugar que ha dicho YHVH, pues hemos pecado. 

41 Pero Moisés dijo: ¿Por qué pretendéis traspasar el dicho de YHVH? Esto no prosperará. 

42 No subáis, porque YHVH no está en medio de vosotros, así no seréis derrotados delante de vuestros enemigos. 

43 Porque el amalecita y el cananeo están esperando allí contra vosotros, y caeréis a espada, por cuanto os volvisteis de seguir a YHVH. YHVH no estará con vosotros. 

44 Sin embargo, se empecinaron en subir a la cumbre del monte, aunque ni el Arca del Pacto de YHVH ni Moisés se movieron de en medio del campamento. 

45 Entonces descendieron los amalecitas y los cananeos que habitaban en aquel monte, y los derrotaron, y los persiguieron hasta Horma.
