1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, (Ac 3:18; 2Ti 4:5; 2Ti 4:17) 

2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us, (Mr 1:1; Mr 4:14; Joh 15:27; Joh 16:4; Ac 4:20; Ac 11:15; Ac 26:16; 1Co 4:1; 1Co 11:2; 1Co 11:23; Heb 2:3; 1Pe 5:1; 2Pe 1:16; 1Jo 1:1; 1Jo 1:3) 

3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, (Ac 1:1; Ac 11:4; Ac 23:26; Ac 24:3; Ac 26:25)

Birth of John the Baptist Foretold

5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah. And he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. (1Ch 24:10; Mt 2:1; Lu 1:8) 

6 And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord. (Lu 2:25; Ac 23:1; Ac 24:16; Php 2:15; Php 3:6; 1Th 2:10; 1Th 3:13; 1Th 5:23) 

7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. (Ge 18:11; Jud 13:2; 1Sa 1:2; Lu 1:36; Heb 11:11) 

8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, (1Ch 24:19; 2Ch 8:14; 2Ch 31:2; Lu 1:5; Lu 1:23) 

9 according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. (Ex 30:7; 1Sa 2:28; 1Ch 23:13; 2Ch 29:11; Lu 1:21; Heb 9:2; Re 11:2; Re 11:19) 

10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. (Le 16:17; Ps 141:2; Re 5:8; Re 8:3) 

11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. (Ex 30:1; Ex 40:26) 

12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. (Ac 19:17) 

13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. (Lu 1:60; Lu 1:63; Ac 10:4; Ac 10:31) 

14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, (Lu 1:58) 

15 for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, 

17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.” (Mal 3:1; Mal 4:6; Mt 11:10; Mt 11:14; Mr 1:2; Lu 1:76; Lu 7:27; Joh 3:28; Ro 10:21) 

18 And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” (Ge 15:8; Ge 17:17) 

19 And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. (1Ki 17:1; Job 1:6; Isa 63:9; Da 8:16; Da 9:21; Mt 18:10; Lu 1:26; Re 8:2) 

20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.” (Eze 3:26; Eze 24:27) 

21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they were wondering at his delay in the temple. (Lu 1:9) 

22 And when he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision in the temple. And he kept making signs to them and remained mute. (Lu 1:21; Lu 1:62) 

23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. (2Ki 11:5; 1Ch 9:25; 2Ch 23:8; Lu 1:8; Heb 10:11) 

24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she kept herself hidden, saying, 

25 “Thus the Lord has done for me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among people.” (Ge 30:23; 1Sa 1:6; Ps 113:9; Isa 4:1) 

Birth of Jesus Foretold

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, (Mt 2:23; Lu 1:19) 

27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. (Mt 1:16; Mt 1:18; Mt 1:20; Lu 2:4) 

28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” (Jud 6:12; Ps 45:2; Da 9:23) 

29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. (Lu 1:12) 

30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. (Ac 7:46) 

31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. (Isa 7:14; Mt 1:21; Mt 1:25; Lu 2:21)

34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” 

35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. (Mt 1:18; Mt 1:20; Mt 14:33; Lu 1:32; Joh 6:69) 

36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. (Lu 1:7) 

37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” (Ge 18:14; Mt 19:26) 

38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. (Jud 6:21; Ac 12:10) 

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, (Jos 20:7; Jos 21:11; Lu 1:65) 

40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 

41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, (Lu 1:15; Lu 1:67) 

42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! (De 28:4; Jud 5:24; Ps 127:3) 

43 And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? (Lu 2:11; Lu 20:42; Joh 20:28) 

44 For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 

45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” (Lu 1:20; Joh 20:29) 

Mary’s Song of Praise: The Magnificat

46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, (1Sa 2:1; Ps 34:2; Ps 69:30; Ac 10:46; Ac 19:17; 1Th 5:23)

56 And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home. 

The Birth of John the Baptist

57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore a son. 

58 And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. (Ge 19:19) 

59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child. And they would have called him Zechariah after his father, (Ge 17:12; Le 12:3; Lu 2:21; Php 3:5) 

60 but his mother answered, “No; he shall be called John.” (Lu 1:13) 

61 And they said to her, “None of your relatives is called by this name.” 

62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he wanted him to be called. (Lu 1:22) 

63 And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they all wondered. (Isa 8:1; Isa 30:8; Lu 1:60) 

64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. (Mr 7:35; Lu 1:20; Lu 2:28; Lu 24:53) 

65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea, (Lu 1:39; Lu 7:16)

Zechariah’s Prophecy

67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, (Joe 2:28; Lu 1:15; Lu 1:41) 

68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people (Ex 4:31; 1Ki 1:48; 1Ch 29:10; Ezr 7:27; Ps 41:13; Ps 72:18; Ps 106:48; Ps 111:9; Ps 130:7; Isa 29:23; Isa 43:1; Isa 59:20; Mt 15:31; Lu 1:78; Lu 2:38; Lu 7:16; Lu 24:21; Ac 13:17; Ac 15:14; Heb 2:6) 

69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, (1Sa 2:1; 1Sa 2:10; 2Sa 22:3; Ps 18:2; Ps 132:17; Eze 29:21; Lu 1:32) 

70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, (Jer 23:5; Ac 3:21; Ro 1:2) 

71 that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us; (Ps 106:10) 

72 to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, (Le 26:42; Ps 105:8; Mic 7:20; Lu 1:54; Ro 9:4) 

73 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us (Ge 22:16; Ge 26:3; Heb 6:13) 

74 that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, (Zep 3:15) 

75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. (Jer 32:39; Mt 28:20; Eph 4:24; 1Th 2:10; Tit 2:12) 

76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, (Mal 3:1; Mt 3:3; Mt 11:9; Mt 14:5; Mr 1:2; Lu 1:17; Lu 1:32; Lu 3:4; Lu 7:26; Lu 7:27; Lu 20:6) 

77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, (Mt 26:28; Mr 1:4) 

78 because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high (Mal 4:2; Lu 1:68; Lu 24:49; Eph 5:14; Col 3:12; 2Pe 1:19) 

79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Ps 107:10; Isa 9:2; Isa 42:7; Mt 4:16; Lu 2:14; Joh 8:12; Ac 26:18; Ro 3:17) 

80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness until the day of his public appearance to Israel. (Mt 3:1; Mt 11:7; Lu 2:40)

Introducción

1 Ya que muchos intentaron compilar un relato acerca de las cosas que entre nosotros han sido del todo certificadas, 

2 según nos las transmitieron los que desde el principio fueron testigos oculares y servidores del Logos, 

3 me ha parecido bien también a mí, habiendo investigado exactamente todas las cosas desde sus fuentes, escribírtelas en orden, oh excelentísimo Teófilo, 

4 para que te percates de la verdad precisa respecto a las cosas en que fuiste oralmente instruido. 

Juan el Bautista (anuncio de su nacimiento)

5 Hubo en los días de Herodes, rey de Judea, cierto sacerdote de nombre Zacarías, de la clase de Abías, y su mujer era de las hijas de Aarón, y su nombre era Elisabet. 

6 Ambos eran justos delante de Dios, conduciéndose irreprochablemente en todos los mandamientos y ordenanzas del Señor. 

7 Y no tenían descendencia, porque Elisabet era estéril, y ambos eran ya bien avanzados en días. 

8 Aconteció, pues, que mientras él ministraba como sacerdote delante de Dios en el turno de su clase, 

9 conforme a la costumbre del sacerdocio, entrando en el santuario del Señor, le cayó en suerte ofrecer incienso. 

10 Y toda la gente del pueblo estaba orando afuera, a la hora del incienso. 

11 Entonces, desde la derecha del altar del incienso, se le apareció de pie un ángel del Señor. 

12 Al verlo, Zacarías se turbó, y el temor se apoderó de él. 

13 Pero el ángel le dijo: No temas, Zacarías, porque fue oída tu oración, y tu mujer Elisabet te dará a luz un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Juan. 

14 Y tendrás gozo y alegría, y muchos se regocijarán por su nacimiento, 

15 porque será grande delante del Señor. No beberá vino ni licor, y será lleno del Espíritu Santo aun desde el vientre de su madre. 

16 Convertirá a muchos de los hijos de Israel al Señor Dios de ellos. 

17 E irá delante de Él con el espíritu y el poder de Elías, para hacer volver los corazones de los padres a los hijos, y los rebeldes a la prudencia de los justos; a preparar para el Señor un pueblo bien dispuesto. 

18 Y Zacarías dijo al ángel: ¿Cómo sabré esto? Porque soy anciano y mi mujer avanzada en días. 

19 Respondiendo el ángel, le dijo: Yo soy Gabriel, que asisto en la presencia de Dios, y he sido enviado para hablar contigo y anunciarte estas buenas nuevas. 

20 He aquí estarás mudo y sin poder hablar hasta el día que lleguen a suceder estas cosas, por cuanto no creíste a mis palabras, las cuales serán cumplidas a su debido tiempo. 

21 Y el pueblo estaba esperando a Zacarías, y se extrañaba de que se demorara en el santuario. 

22 Y cuando salió, no podía hablarles; y comprendieron que había visto una visión en el santuario, porque les hacía señas, pero permanecía mudo. 

23 Y aconteció que cuando se cumplieron los días de su ministerio, se fue a su casa. 

24 Después de esos días su mujer Elisabet concibió, y se mantenía en reclusión cinco meses, diciendo: 

25 Así ha hecho conmigo el Señor en los días en que se dignó quitar mi afrenta entre los hombres. 

El anuncio

26 Al sexto mes, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea, cuyo nombre era Nazaret, 

27 a una virgen desposada con un varón cuyo nombre era José, de la casa de David, y el nombre de la virgen era Miriam. 

28 Y entrando en donde ella estaba, dijo: ¡Te saludo, muy favorecida! ¡El Señor está contigo! 

29 Ella se turbó mucho por esta expresión, y se preguntaba qué clase de salutación sería ésta. 

30 Pero el ángel le dijo: ¡No temas Miriam, porque has hallado gracia ante Dios! 

31 He aquí quedarás encinta y darás a luz un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Jesús. 

32 Éste será grande, y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo, y el Señor Dios le dará el trono de David su padre; 

33 y reinará sobre la casa de Jacob por los siglos, y de su reino no habrá fin. 

34 Entonces Miriam dijo al ángel: ¿Cómo ocurrirá esto, puesto que no conozco varón? 

35 Respondiendo el ángel, le dijo: El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti, y el poder del Altísimo te hará sombra; por lo cual también lo nacido será llamado Santo, Hijo de Dios. 

36 Y he aquí tu parienta Elisabet, ella también ha concebido un hijo en su vejez, y éste es el sexto mes para aquella que era llamada estéril; 

37 porque de parte de Dios ninguna cosa es imposible. 

38 Entonces Miriam dijo: He aquí la sierva del Señor, hágase conmigo conforme a tu palabra. Y el ángel se retiró de ella. 

El misterio de la piedad

39 En esos días, Miriam se levantó y partió apresuradamente hacia una ciudad en la región montañosa de Judá; 

40 y entrando en casa de Zacarías, saludó a Elisabet. 

41 Cuando Elisabet oyó el saludo de Miriam, aconteció que la criatura saltó de gozo en su vientre, y Elisabet fue llena del Espíritu Santo. 

42 Y exclamó a gran voz, y dijo: ¡Bendita tú entre las mujeres, y bendito el fruto de tu vientre! 

43 ¿Por qué se me concede esto, que la madre de mi Señor venga a mí? 

44 Porque he aquí, en cuanto la voz de tu salutación llegó a mis oídos, la criatura saltó de alegría en mi vientre. 

45 ¡Bienaventurada la que creyó que tendrán cumplimiento las cosas que le fueron dichas de parte del Señor! 

46 Entonces Miriam dijo: Mi alma engrandece al Señor, 

47 Y mi espíritu se regocija en Dios mi Salvador, 

48 Porque miró la bajeza de su sierva; pues he aquí desde ahora Me llamarán bienaventurada todas las generaciones. 

49 Porque me ha hecho grandes cosas el Poderoso; ¡Santo es su nombre! 

50 Su misericordia es de generación en generación para los que le temen. 

51 Hizo proezas con su brazo; Esparció a los soberbios en la intención de su corazón. 

52 Quitó de los tronos a los poderosos, Y exaltó a los humildes. 

53 A los hambrientos colmó de bienes, Y envió vacíos a los que se enriquecen. 

54 Acudió en ayuda de Israel su siervo, Para recordar su misericordia 

55 Con Abraham y su descendencia para siempre, Conforme habló a nuestros padres. 

56 Y Miriam permaneció con ella como tres meses, y regresó a su casa. 

Nacimiento del Bautista

57 Entonces se le cumplió a Elisabet el tiempo de dar a luz; y dio a luz un hijo. 

58 Y sus vecinos y parientes oyeron que el Señor había engrandecido su misericordia con ella, y se regocijaban juntamente con ella. 

59 Y aconteció que al octavo día fueron a circuncidar al niño; y lo llamaban Zacarías, por el nombre de su padre. 

60 Pero interviniendo su madre, dijo: ¡No!, sino que será llamado Juan. 

61 Y le dijeron: No hay ninguno de tu parentela llamado con ese nombre. 

62 Y por señas le preguntaban a su padre cómo desearía llamarlo. 

63 Entonces él pidiendo una tablilla, escribió, diciendo: Juan es su nombre. Y todos se maravillaron. 

64 Y al instante fue abierta su boca y su lengua, y hablaba bendiciendo a Dios. 

65 Y sobrevino temor a todos sus vecinos, y en toda la región montañosa de Judea eran comentadas todas estas cosas. 

66 Y todos los que las oyeron las guardaron en su corazón, diciendo: ¿Quién, pues, llegará a ser este niño? Porque la mano del Señor ciertamente estaba con él. 

67 Y su padre Zacarías fue lleno del Espíritu Santo, y profetizó, diciendo: 

68 Bendito el Señor Dios de Israel, Porque visitó e hizo redención a su pueblo, 

69 Y nos levantó Cuerno de salvación, En la casa de David su siervo 

70 (Como habló por boca de sus santos profetas, Desde el principio del mundo), 

71 Salvación de nuestros enemigos y de la mano de todos los que nos aborrecen, 

72 Para hacer misericordia con nuestros padres, Y acordarse de su santo pacto: 

73 El juramento que juró a nuestro padre Abraham, 

74 De concedernos que, rescatados de mano del enemigo, Lo sirviéramos sin temor, 

75 En santidad y en justicia delante de Él, todos nuestros días. 

76 ¡Y tú, niño, serás llamado profeta del Altísimo! Porque irás delante de la faz del Señor, Para preparar sus caminos; 

77 Y dar conocimiento de salvación a su pueblo, Mediante el perdón de sus pecados; 

78 A causa de las entrañas de misericordia de nuestro Dios, Con las cuales nos visitará desde lo alto el Sol de la aurora, 

79 Para dar luz a los que habitan en tinieblas y en sombra de muerte, Para guiar nuestros pies hacia el Camino de paz. 

80 Y el niño crecía y se fortalecía en espíritu, y estuvo en los desiertos hasta el día de su manifestación a Israel.
