Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah

1 Zedekiah the son of Josiah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah, reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim. (2Ki 24:17; 2Ch 36:10; Jer 22:24; Eze 17:13)

2 But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land listened to the words of the Lord that he spoke through Jeremiah the prophet. (2Ch 36:12) 3 King Zedekiah sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, to Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “Please pray for us to the Lord our God.” (Jer 21:1; Jer 21:2; Jer 35:4; Jer 37:13; Jer 38:1)

4 Now Jeremiah was still going in and out among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison. (Nu 27:17; Jer 32:2; Jer 33:1) 5 The army of Pharaoh had come out of Egypt. And when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news about them, they withdrew from Jerusalem. (Jer 32:2; Jer 34:21; Jer 37:11; Eze 17:15)

6 Then the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet: 7 “Thus says the Lord, God of Israel: Thus shall you say to the king of Judah who sent you to me to inquire of me, ‘Behold, Pharaoh’s army that came to help you is about to return to Egypt, to its own land. 8 And the Chaldeans shall come back and fight against this city. They shall capture it and burn it with fire. (Jer 34:22) 9 Thus says the Lord, Do not deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely go away from us,” for they will not go away. 10 For even if you should defeat the whole army of Chaldeans who are fighting against you, and there remained of them only wounded men, every man in his tent, they would rise up and burn this city with fire.’” (Jer 21:4; Jer 37:8)

Jeremiah Imprisoned

11 Now when the Chaldean army had withdrawn from Jerusalem at the approach of Pharaoh’s army, (Jer 37:5) 12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem to go to the land of Benjamin to receive his portion there among the people. (Jer 1:1; Jer 32:8; Jer 32:9; Jer 37:4; Jer 39:14)

13 When he was at the Benjamin Gate, a sentry there named Irijah the son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans.” (Jer 21:9; Jer 37:3; Jer 38:1; Jer 38:7; Jer 38:19; Jer 39:9; Jer 52:15; Zec 14:10)

14 And Jeremiah said, “It is a lie; I am not deserting to the Chaldeans.” But Irijah would not listen to him, and seized Jeremiah and brought him to the officials. (Jer 36:12) 15 And the officials were enraged at Jeremiah, and they beat him and imprisoned him in the house of Jonathan the secretary, for it had been made a prison. (Heb 11:36) 16 When Jeremiah had come to the dungeon cells and remained there many days, (Jer 38:6) 17 King Zedekiah sent for him and received him. The king questioned him secretly in his house and said, “Is there any word from the Lord?” Jeremiah said, “There is.” Then he said, “You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.” (Jer 21:7; Jer 38:16) 18 Jeremiah also said to King Zedekiah, “What wrong have I done to you or your servants or this people, that you have put me in prison? (Jer 37:15) 19 Where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you and against this land’? (Jer 28:2; Jer 28:11; Jer 28:17) 20 Now hear, please, O my lord the king: let my humble plea come before you and do not send me back to the house of Jonathan the secretary, lest I die there.” (Jer 38:26; Jer 38:28) 21 So King Zedekiah gave orders, and they committed Jeremiah to the court of the guard. And a loaf of bread was given him daily from the bakers’ street, until all the bread of the city was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard. En la cárcel

1 En lugar de Conías ben Joacim, reinó como rey Sedequías, hijo de Josías, al cual Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, constituyó por rey en la tierra de Judá. 2 Pero ni él ni sus siervos, ni el pueblo de la tierra escucharon las palabras que YHVH habló por medio del profeta Jeremías. 3 El rey Sedequías envió a Jucal ben Selemías y a Sofonías ben Maasías, el sacerdote, para que dijeran al profeta Jeremías: Te ruego que ores por nosotros a YHVH nuestro Dios. 4 En ese entonces Jeremías entraba y salía en medio del pueblo, porque todavía no lo habían puesto en la cárcel. 5 Entre tanto, el ejército de Faraón había salido de Egipto, y al llegar la noticia a oídos de los caldeos que tenían sitiada a Jerusalem, se retiraron de Jerusalem. 6 Entonces llegó palabra de YHVH al profeta Jeremías, diciendo: 7 Así dice YHVH Dios de Israel: Diréis así al rey de Judá, que os envió a mí para que me consultarais: He aquí el ejército de Faraón que había salido en vuestro socorro, se ha vuelto a su tierra en Egipto. 8 Y los caldeos volverán y atacarán esta ciudad, y la tomarán y le prenderán fuego. 9 Así dice YHVH: No os engañéis a vosotros mismos, diciendo: ¡Seguramente los caldeos se apartarán de nosotros!, porque no se apartarán. 10 Porque aun cuando hirierais a todo el ejército de los caldeos que luchan contra vosotros, y de ellos quedaran solamente hombres heridos, cada uno se levantaría de su tienda y quemarían a fuego esta ciudad. 11 Cuando el ejército caldeo se retiró de Jerusalem a causa del ejército de Faraón, 12 Jeremías intentó salir de Jerusalem hacia el territorio de Benjamín, para repartirse una herencia con los suyos. 13 Pero cuando llegó a la puerta de Benjamín, estaba allí un capitán llamado Irías ben Selemías, hijo de Hananías, el cual apresó al profeta Jeremías, diciendo: ¡Te pasas a los caldeos! 14 Jeremías respondió: ¡Falso, no me paso a los caldeos! Pero él no lo quiso escuchar, y prendiendo a Jeremías, lo llevó ante los príncipes. 15 Y los príncipes se airaron contra Jeremías, y lo azotaron y lo pusieron en prisión en la casa del escriba Jonatán, pues la habían convertido en cárcel. 16 Y Jeremías fue puesto en el calabozo de la mazmorra, y allí permaneció muchos días. 17 El rey Sedequías lo mandó buscar, y una vez en su casa, le preguntó secretamente: ¿Hay palabra de YHVH? Jeremías respondió: Hay; y añadió: Serás entregado en mano del rey de Babilonia. 18 Jeremías dijo además al rey Sedequías: ¿En qué pequé contra ti o contra tus siervos, o contra este pueblo, para que me pusieras en la cárcel? 19 ¿Dónde están vuestros profetas que os profetizaban diciendo: El rey de Babilonia no vendrá contra vosotros, ni contra esta tierra? 20 Y ahora, oh rey, señor mío, te ruego me escuches. Acoge mi súplica y no me hagas volver a casa del escriba Jonatán, no sea que muera allí. 21 Entonces el rey Sedequías ordenó que custodiaran a Jeremías en el atrio de la guardia real, y que le dieran una hogaza de pan al día, de la calle de los Panaderos, mientras hubiera pan en la ciudad. Y así se quedó Jeremías en el atrio de la guardia real.
