Joseph Tests His Brothers

1 Then he commanded the steward of his house, “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in the mouth of his sack, (Ge 42:25; Ge 43:16; Ge 44:4) 2 and put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, with his money for the grain.” And he did as Joseph told him. 3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away with their donkeys. 4 They had gone only a short distance from the city. Now Joseph said to his steward, “Up, follow after the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good?^[1] (Ge 44:1) 5 Is it not from this that my lord drinks, and by this that he practices divination? You have done evil in doing this.’” (Ge 30:27; Ge 44:15; 2Ki 21:6; 2Ch 33:6)

6 When he overtook them, he spoke to them these words. 7 They said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing! 8 Behold, the money that we found in the mouths of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house? (Ge 43:21) 9 Whichever of your servants is found with it shall die, and we also will be my lord’s servants.” (Ge 31:32; Ge 44:16) 10 He said, “Let it be as you say: he who is found with it shall be my servant, and the rest of you shall be innocent.” 11 Then each man quickly lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack. 12 And he searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. 13 Then they tore their clothes, and every man loaded his donkey, and they returned to the city. (Ge 37:29) 14 When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, he was still there. They fell before him to the ground. (Ge 37:7; Ge 37:9; Ge 42:6; Ge 43:26; Ge 43:28)

15 Joseph said to them, “What deed is this that you have done? Do you not know that a man like me can indeed practice divination?” (Ge 44:5) 16 And Judah said, “What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how can we clear ourselves? God has found out the guilt of your servants; behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we and he also in whose hand the cup has been found.” (Ge 37:18; Ge 44:9; Nu 32:23) 17 But he said, “Far be it from me that I should do so! Only the man in whose hand the cup was found shall be my servant. But as for you, go up in peace to your father.” 18 Then Judah went up to him and said, “Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not your anger burn against your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself. (Ge 41:40; Ge 43:20; Ex 32:22) 19 My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father, or a brother?’ 20 And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, and a young brother, the child of his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother’s children, and his father loves him.’ (Ge 37:3; Ge 43:8; Ge 44:30) 21 Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’ (Ge 42:15; Ge 42:20; Ge 43:3; Ge 43:5)

22 We said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.’ (Ge 44:31) 23 Then you said to your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not see my face again.’ (Ge 43:3) 24 “When we went back to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. 25 And when our father said, ‘Go again, buy us a little food,’ (Ge 43:2) 26 we said, ‘We cannot go down. If our youngest brother goes with us, then we will go down. For we cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’ 27 Then your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons. (Ge 46:19) 28 One left me, and I said, “Surely he has been torn to pieces,” and I have never seen him since. (Ge 37:33) 29 If you take this one also from me, and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs in evil to Sheol.’ (Ge 42:4; Ge 42:36; Ge 42:38) 30 “Now therefore, as soon as I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us, then, as his life is bound up in the boy’s life, 31 as soon as he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die, and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol. 32 For your servant became a pledge of safety for the boy to my father, saying, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father all my life.’ (Ge 43:9) 33 Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the boy as a servant to my lord, and let the boy go back with his brothers. 34 For how can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? I fear to see the evil that would find my father.”

La copa de José

1 Luego él ordenó al que estaba a cargo de su casa, diciendo: Llena de comida los costales de estos hombres, tanto como puedan llevar, y coloca la plata de cada uno en la boca de su costal. 2 Y coloca mi copa, la copa de plata, en la boca del costal del menor, con la plata de su grano. E hizo conforme a la palabra que había hablado José. 3 Cuando rayó el alba, fueron despedidos aquellos varones, ellos y sus asnos. 4 Salieron ellos de la ciudad, y no se habían alejado, cuando José dijo al que estaba a cargo de su casa: Levántate y persigue a esos hombres, y cuando los alcances, diles: ¿Por qué habéis pagado mal por bien? 5 ¿No es ésta en la cual bebe mi señor, y con lo que suele adivinar? Habéis obrado mal en lo que hicisteis. 6 Así, los alcanzó y les habló estas palabras. 7 Y ellos le dijeron: ¿Por qué habla mi señor tales cosas? ¡Lejos sea de tus siervos hacer cosa semejante! 8 He aquí, la plata que hallamos en la boca de nuestros costales, te la volvimos a traer desde la tierra de Canaán, ¿cómo, pues, hurtaríamos de la casa de tu señor plata u oro? 9 Aquel de tus siervos en quien sea hallada, que muera, y nosotros también seremos esclavos de mi señor. 10 Y él dijo: Sea ahora conforme a vuestras palabras, aquél en quien se halle llegará a ser mi esclavo, y vosotros seréis inocentes. 11 Y se apresuraron, y bajando cada uno su costal a tierra, cada cual abrió su costal. 12 Él, pues, comenzó a registrar por el mayor y terminó con el menor, y la copa fue hallada en el costal de Benjamín. 13 Entonces ellos se rasgaron las vestiduras, y cada uno cargó su asno y regresaron a la ciudad. 14 Y llegaron Judá y sus hermanos a casa de José, y él estaba aún allí, y cayeron a tierra ante él. 15 Y José les dijo: ¿Qué acción es esta que habéis hecho? ¿No sabéis que un hombre como yo es capaz de adivinar? 16 Entonces dijo Judá: ¿Qué diremos a mi señor? ¿Qué hablaremos? ¿Cómo nos justificaremos? ’Elohim ha descubierto la iniquidad de tus siervos. He aquí, somos esclavos de mi señor, nosotros, y también aquél en cuya mano fue hallada la copa. 17 Pero él dijo: Lejos de mí el hacer esto, el hombre en cuya mano fue hallada la copa, él será mi esclavo. Vosotros subid en paz a vuestro padre. 18 Entonces Judá se acercó a él, y dijo: ¡Ay, señor mío! Te ruego que hable tu siervo una palabra a oídos de mi señor, y no se encienda tu ira contra tu siervo, porque tú eres como el mismo Faraón. 19 Mi señor ha preguntado a sus siervos, diciendo: ¿Tenéis padre o hermano? 20 Y nosotros dijimos a mi señor: Tenemos un padre anciano, y un muchacho pequeño que le nació en su vejez, pues su hermano murió, sólo él quedó de su madre, y su padre lo ama. 21 Y dijiste a tus siervos: Hacedlo bajar para que lo vea. 22 Entonces nosotros dijimos a mi señor: El muchacho no puede abandonar a su padre, porque si lo abandonara, su padre moriría. 23 Y dijiste a tus siervos: Si vuestro hermano menor no baja con vosotros, no veréis más mi rostro. 24 Y aconteció que cuando subimos adonde mi padre, tu siervo, le referimos las palabras de mi señor. 25 Y nuestro padre dijo: Volved a comprar para nosotros un poco de alimento. 26 Pero nosotros dijimos: No podemos bajar. Si nuestro hermano menor va con nosotros, bajaremos, porque no podremos ver el rostro de aquel hombre si no está con nosotros nuestro hermano menor. 27 Entonces tu siervo, mi padre, nos dijo: Vosotros mismos sabéis que mi mujer me dio a luz dos. 28 El uno salió de mi lado, y dije: Ciertamente fue despedazado. Y hasta ahora no lo he vuelto a ver. 29 Y si tomáis también a éste de mi presencia y le sucede alguna desgracia, haréis descender mis canas con maldad al Seol. 30 Y ahora, cuando llegue a tu siervo, mi padre, y el muchacho no esté con nosotros, como su alma está ligada al alma de él, 31 sucederá que cuando vea que el muchacho no está, morirá, y tus siervos habrán hecho descender con dolor al Seol las canas de tu siervo, nuestro padre. 32 Porque yo, tu siervo, he quedado como fiador del muchacho ante mi padre, diciendo: Si no te lo traigo, sea pecador ante mi padre todos los días. 33 Y ahora, te ruego que tu siervo quede en lugar del joven por esclavo de mi señor, y el joven suba con sus hermanos. 34 Porque ¿cómo subiré yo hasta mi padre si el joven no está conmigo? ¡No vea el mal que le sobrevendrá a mi padre!
