God Rescues Lot

1 The two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed himself with his face to the earth (Ge 18:22) 2 and said, “My lords, please turn aside to your servant’s house and spend the night and wash your feet. Then you may rise up early and go on your way.” They said, “No; we will spend the night in the town square.” (Ge 18:4; Jud 4:18; Lu 24:28; Heb 13:2)

3 But he pressed them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house. And he made them a feast and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. 4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house. 5 And they called to Lot, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them.” (Ge 13:13; Jud 19:22; Isa 3:9; Ro 1:24; Ro 1:27; Jud 1:7)

6 Lot went out to the men at the entrance, shut the door after him, 7 and said, “I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. 8 Behold, I have two daughters who have not known any man. Let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please. Only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof.” (Jud 19:24) 9 But they said, “Stand back!” And they said, “This fellow came to sojourn, and he has become the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them.” Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and drew near to break the door down. (Ge 13:12; Ex 2:14) 10 But the men reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them and shut the door. 11 And they struck with blindness the men who were at the entrance of the house, both small and great, so that they wore themselves out groping for the door. (2Ki 6:18; Ac 13:11) 12 Then the men said to Lot, “Have you anyone else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city, bring them out of the place. (2Pe 2:7; 2Pe 2:9; Re 18:4) 13 For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it.” (Ge 18:20) 14 So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, “Up! 15 As morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be swept away in the punishment of the city.” 16 But he lingered. So the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the Lord being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city. (Ps 34:22) 17 And as they brought them out, one said, “Escape for your life. Do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley. Escape to the hills, lest you be swept away.” (Ge 13:10; Ge 19:26; Mt 24:16) 18 And Lot said to them, “Oh, no, my lords. 19 Behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life. But I cannot escape to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me and I die. 20 Behold, this city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there—is it not a little one?—and my life will be saved!” 21 He said to him, “Behold, I grant you this favor also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. 22 Escape there quickly, for I can do nothing till you arrive there.” Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.^[1] (Ge 14:2)

God Destroys Sodom

23 The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. 24 Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven. (De 29:23; Jer 20:16; Jer 50:40; La 4:6; Am 4:11; Zep 2:9; Lu 17:29; 2Pe 2:6)

25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26 But Lot’s wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. (Lu 17:32) 27 And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the Lord. (Ge 18:22) 28 And he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the valley, and he looked and, behold, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace. 29 So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow when he overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived. (Ge 8:1)

Lot and His Daughters

30 Now Lot went up out of Zoar and lived in the hills with his two daughters, for he was afraid to live in Zoar. So he lived in a cave with his two daughters. (Ge 19:17; Ge 19:19) 31 And the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth. 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve offspring from our father.” 33 So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father. He did not know when she lay down or when she arose. 34 The next day, the firstborn said to the younger, “Behold, I lay last night with my father. Let us make him drink wine tonight also. Then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve offspring from our father.” 35 So they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. 36 Thus both the daughters of Lot became pregnant by their father. 37 The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab.^[2] He is the father of the Moabites to this day. (De 2:9) 38 The younger also bore a son and called his name Ben-ammi.^[3] He is the father of the Ammonites to this day. (De 2:19)

Destrucción de Sodoma y Gomorra

1 Entre tanto los dos ángeles llegaron a Sodoma al atardecer, y Lot estaba sentado en la puerta de Sodoma. Cuando Lot los vio, se levantó a recibirlos y postrándose con su rostro a tierra, 2 dijo: Mirad señores míos, os ruego que os desviéis a casa de vuestro siervo, pernoctéis y lavéis vuestros pies. De madrugada os levantaréis y podréis seguir vuestro camino. Mas ellos contestaron: No, pasaremos la noche en la plaza. 3 Pero como les rogara con insistencia, fueron con él. Entraron en su casa y él les preparó un banquete, coció panes sin levadura, y comieron. 4 Aún no se habían acostado, cuando los hombres de la ciudad, los sodomitas, rodearon la casa: jóvenes y ancianos, toda la población, hasta el último. 5 Y gritando a Lot, le dijeron: ¿Dónde están los varones que han venido a ti esta noche? ¡Sácalos para que los conozcamos! 6 Entonces Lot, saliendo a ellos a la entrada, cerró la puerta tras de sí, 7 y exclamó: ¡Por favor, hermanos míos, no hagáis este mal! 8 Mirad, os ruego, tengo dos hijas que no han conocido varón, voy a sacarlas a vosotros ahora y haced con ellas como bien os parezca, pero no hagáis nada a estos varones que han venido a cobijarse bajo mi techo. 9 Pero respondieron: ¡Quítate de ahí! Y añadieron: Es el único que ha venido como forastero, ¿y pretende erigirse en juez? ¡Ahora te trataremos peor que a ellos! Y arremetiendo violentamente contra Lot, intentaban forzar la puerta. 10 Pero aquellos varones extendieron sus manos y metieron a Lot junto a ellos en la casa y cerraron la puerta, 11 al tiempo que a los hombres que estaban en la entrada de la casa, del menor al mayor, los hirieron con ceguera, de modo que eran incapaces de hallar la entrada. 12 Y dijeron los varones a Lot: ¿Quién más tienes aquí? Saca del lugar a tus yernos, y a tus hijos e hijas, y a cualquiera que tengas en la ciudad, 13 porque nosotros vamos a destruir este lugar, ya que el clamor que subió delante de YHVH es grande, y YHVH nos envió a destruirlo. 14 Entonces salió Lot y habló a sus yernos, los que habían de tomar a sus hijas, y les dijo: ¡Levantaos! ¡Salid de este lugar, porque YHVH va a destruir esta ciudad! Pero a sus yernos les pareció que bromeaba. 15 Al despuntar el alba, los ángeles apremiaban a Lot, diciendo: ¡Levántate, toma a tu mujer y a tus dos hijas presentes para que no seas barrido por el pecado de la ciudad! 16 Pero como él no se decidía, los varones lo agarraron y lo sacaron de la mano a él, a su mujer y a sus dos hijas, gracias a la misericordia de YHVH hacia él, y lo hicieron estar fuera de la ciudad. 17 Cuando los hubieron sacado fuera, se le dijo: ¡Huye por tu vida! No mires tras de ti, ni te detengas en toda la llanura hasta la montaña. ¡Huye o serás barrido! 18 Lot le dijo: ¡Por favor, no, señor mío! 19 Mira, te ruego, tu siervo ha hallado gracia ante tus ojos, y has engrandecido la misericordia que hiciste conmigo preservando mi vida, pero no puedo escapar hasta la montaña, pues el mal me alcanzará, y moriré. 20 He aquí, te ruego, esa aldea está cerca para huir allá y es pequeña, ¿no es insignificante? Permíteme que huya allá y conserve mi vida. 21 Y le respondió: He aquí, también sobre esto he aceptado tu ruego. No derrumbaré la ciudad de la cual has hablado. 22 ¡Apresúrate! Escapa hacia allá, pues no podré hacer cosa alguna hasta que llegues allá. Por eso llamó Zoar el nombre de la ciudad. 23 Salía el sol sobre aquella tierra cuando Lot entraba en Zoar. 24 Entonces YHVH hizo llover desde los cielos sobre Sodoma y Gomorra azufre y fuego de parte de YHVH, 25 y derrumbó estas ciudades y toda aquella llanura, con todos los habitantes de las ciudades y las plantas del suelo. 26 Y la mujer de aquél miró hacia atrás, y se convirtió en pilar de sal. 27 Abraham, madrugando, se dirigió de mañana al lugar donde había estado en presencia de YHVH, 28 y oteando hacia el lado de Sodoma y Gomorra y hacia toda la región de la llanura, he aquí vio que subía de la tierra un humo, como la humareda de un horno. 29 Así, cuando ’Elohim destruyó las ciudades de la llanura, ’Elohim se acordó de Abraham, por eso sacó a Lot de en medio del derrumbamiento de las ciudades en que Lot se había establecido.

Descendencia de Lot

30 Luego Lot subió desde Zoar y habitó en la montaña con sus dos hijas, pues temía permanecer en Zoar. Habitó, pues, en una caverna junto con sus dos hijas. 31 Y dijo la primogénita a la más joven: Nuestro padre es anciano, y no hay en esta tierra ni un varón que se llegue a nosotras según la costumbre de toda la tierra. 32 ¡Ven! hagamos beber vino a nuestro padre, y acostémonos con él. Así preservaremos descendencia de nuestro padre. 33 E hicieron beber vino a su padre aquella noche, y entró la primogénita y se acostó con su padre, pero él no supo cuándo ella se acostó ni cuándo se levantó. 34 Y sucedió al día siguiente que la primogénita dijo a la más joven: Mira, anoche me acosté con mi padre. Hagámosle beber vino también esta noche y ve, acuéstate con él y preservemos descendencia de nuestro padre. 35 Y también hicieron beber vino a su padre aquella noche, y se levantó la más joven y se acostó con él, sin embargo él no supo cuándo ella se acostó, ni cuándo se levantó. 36 Y las dos hijas de Lot concibieron de su padre. 37 La primogénita dio a luz un hijo, y llamó su nombre Moab, el cual es padre de los moabitas hasta hoy. 38 También la más joven dio a luz un hijo, y llamó su nombre Ben-ammí, el cual es padre de los hijos de Amón hasta hoy.
