1 And the Lord appeared to him by the oaks^[1] of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. (Ge 13:18; Ge 14:13) 2 He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them and bowed himself to the earth (Ge 19:1; Heb 13:2) 3 and said, “O Lord,^[2] if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. 4 Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, (Ge 19:2; Ge 24:32; Ge 43:24; Lu 7:44; Joh 13:14)

5 while I bring a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” (Ge 19:8; Ge 33:10; Jud 19:5; Ps 104:15)

6 And Abraham went quickly into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quick! Three seahs^[3] of fine flour! Knead it, and make cakes.” 7 And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly. 8 Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate. 9 They said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “She is in the tent.” (Ge 24:67) 10 The Lord said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. (Ge 17:17; Ro 4:19; Heb 11:11) 12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” (Ge 17:17; Lu 1:18; 1Pe 3:6) 13 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard^[4] for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.” (Ge 18:10; Job 42:2; Jer 32:17; Jer 32:27; Zec 8:6; Mt 19:26; Lu 1:37)

15 But Sarah denied it,^[5] saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.” 16 Then the men set out from there, and they looked down toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to set them on their way. 17 The Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, (Ps 25:14; Am 3:7; Joh 15:15) 18 seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? (Ge 12:3; Ge 22:18; Ge 26:4; Ac 3:25; Ga 3:8)

19 For I have chosen^[6] him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” (Am 3:2) 20 Then the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, (Ge 4:10; Ge 19:13; Isa 3:9; Eze 16:49; Jas 5:4)

21 I will go down to see whether they have done altogether^[7] according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, I will know.” (Ge 11:5; Ge 11:7; Ex 3:8; Jos 22:22)

Abraham Intercedes for Sodom

22 So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. (Ge 18:1; Ge 18:16; Ge 19:1; Ps 106:23; Jer 18:20)

23 Then Abraham drew near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? (Ge 20:4; Nu 16:22; 2Sa 24:17) 24 Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? 25 Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” (De 32:4; Job 8:3; Job 8:20; Job 34:10; Ro 3:5)

26 And the Lord said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.” (Isa 65:8; Jer 5:1; Eze 22:30) 27 Abraham answered and said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. (Lu 18:1) 28 Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?” And he said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.” 29 Again he spoke to him and said, “Suppose forty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of forty I will not do it.” 30 Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there.” He answered, “I will not do it, if I find thirty there.” 31 He said, “Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it.” 32 Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.” (Jud 6:39) 33 And the Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

1 Después se le apareció YHVH en el encinar de Mamre estando él sentado a la puerta de la tienda en el más intenso calor del día. 2 Y alzando sus ojos, miró, y he aquí tres varones erguidos frente a él. En cuanto los vio, corrió a su encuentro desde la puerta de su tienda y se postró a tierra, 3 y exclamó: Señor mío, si he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, te ruego que no pases de largo junto a tu siervo. 4 Tráigase ya un poco de agua, y lavad vuestros pies y recostaos bajo el árbol, 5 mientras tomo un trozo de pan para que sustentéis vuestro corazón. Luego seguiréis adelante, pues por eso habéis pasado junto a vuestro siervo. Contestaron: Haz como has dicho. 6 Abraham se apresuró a entrar en la tienda de Sara, y dijo: ¡Toma pronto tres medidas de flor de harina, amásalas y haz tortas! 7 En seguida, corriendo hacia la vacada, Abraham tomó un becerro tierno y bueno, y se lo dio al mozo, y éste se apresuró a aderezarlo. 8 Juntamente con el becerro que había aderezado, tomó también cuajada y leche y lo presentó ante ellos, y mientras él se mantenía en pie junto a ellos debajo del árbol, ellos comían. 9 Después le dijeron: ¿dónde está tu mujer Sara? Y él dijo: He aquí, está en la tienda. 10 Y dijo: Volveré a ti sin falta según el tiempo de la vida, y he aquí que tu mujer Sara tendrá un hijo. Y Sara escuchaba a la entrada de la tienda, pues estaba detrás de él. 11 Y Abraham y Sara eran ancianos, entrados en días, y a Sara le había cesado la costumbre de las mujeres. 12 Y se rió Sara en sus adentros, diciendo: ¿Después de mi menopausia he de tener placer, siendo mi señor anciano? 13 Entonces dijo YHVH a Abraham: ¿Por qué se ha reído Sara así, diciendo: ¿Es cierto que daré a luz cuando ya soy vieja? 14 ¿Acaso hay algo imposible para YHVH? En el momento señalado volveré a ti, según el tiempo de la vida, y Sara tendrá un hijo. 15 Pero Sara negó diciendo: No me he reído (pues tuvo miedo). Pero Él dijo: No, realmente te has reído. 16 Y levantándose de allí aquellos varones, dirigieron la mirada a Sodoma, y Abraham fue con ellos para despedirlos. 17 Y YHVH se dijo: ¿Encubriré a Abraham lo que voy a hacer? 18 Porque ciertamente Abraham llegará a ser una nación grande y fuerte, y en él serán benditas todas las naciones de la tierra. 19 Porque lo he escogido para que instruya a sus hijos y a su casa y a sus sucesores a mantenerse en el camino de YHVH practicando justicia y derecho, para que cumpla YHVH sobre Abraham todo cuanto ha predicho acerca de él. 20 Entonces dijo YHVH: Por cuanto el clamor contra Sodoma y Gomorra es grande, y se ha agravado en extremo su pecado, 21 descenderé ahora y veré si en todo han obrado según el clamor que llega hasta mí, y si no, lo sabré. 22 Entonces los varones se volvieron y se encaminaron hacia Sodoma, pero YHVH se quedó aún con Abraham. 23 Entonces, acercándose, Abraham dijo: ¿Destruirás al justo con el malvado? 24 Quizá haya cincuenta justos en medio de la ciudad. ¿Arrasarás, acaso, y no perdonarás al lugar, por amor a los cincuenta justos que estén en medio de ella? 25 ¡Lejos de ti hacer cosa tal! ¿Que hagas morir al justo con el malvado, y que el justo sea como el malvado? ¡Lejos de ti! ¿Acaso el Juez de toda la tierra no hará justicia? 26 Y dijo YHVH: Si hallo en Sodoma cincuenta justos en la ciudad, entonces perdonaré a todo el lugar por causa de ellos. 27 Y respondió Abraham, y dijo: En verdad, aunque soy polvo y ceniza, ahora que me he atrevido a hablar a mi Señor, 28 quizá falten cinco de los cincuenta justos. ¿Destruirás acaso por cinco a toda la ciudad? Y dijo: No la destruiré si hallo allí cuarenta y cinco. 29 Volvió a hablarle una vez más, y dijo: Quizá se encuentren allí cuarenta. Y respondió: No lo haré por causa de los cuarenta. 30 Entonces dijo: No se enoje ahora mi Señor, y podré hablar: Quizá se hallen allí treinta. Y dijo: No actuaré si hallo allí treinta. 31 Y dijo: En verdad te ruego, al atreverme a hablar a mi Señor, quizá se hallen allí veinte. Y dijo: No destruiré por causa de los veinte. 32 Entonces dijo: Te ruego, no se enardezca mi Señor, y hablaré sólo esta vez: Quizá se hallen allí diez. Y respondió: No la destruiré por causa de los diez. 33 Y cuando YHVH acabó de hablar a Abraham, se fue, y Abraham regresó a su lugar.
