The Lord’s Covenant with David

1 Now when the king lived in his house and the Lord had given him rest from all his surrounding enemies, (Jos 11:23; 1Ch 17:1) 2 the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells in a tent.” (Ex 26:1; 2Sa 5:11; 2Sa 7:17; 2Sa 12:1)

6 I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for my dwelling. 14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, (Ps 89:26; Ps 89:32; Heb 1:5) 15 but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me.^[3] Your throne shall be established forever.’” (2Sa 7:13; Ps 89:36; Lu 1:33) 17 In accordance with all these words, and in accordance with all this vision, Nathan spoke to David.

David’s Prayer of Gratitude

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? (Ge 32:10) 19 And yet this was a small thing in your eyes, O Lord God. You have spoken also of your servant’s house for a great while to come, and this is instruction for mankind, O Lord God! (2Sa 7:12; 1Ch 17:17) 20 And what more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Lord God! (Ps 139:1) 21 Because of your promise, and according to your own heart, you have brought about all this greatness, to make your servant know it. 22 Therefore you are great, O Lord God. For there is none like you, and there is no God besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. (Ex 15:11; De 3:24; 1Ch 16:25; 2Ch 2:5; Ps 86:8; Ps 89:6; Ps 89:8; Isa 45:5; Jer 10:6)

23 And who is like your people Israel, the one nation on earth whom God went to redeem to be his people, making himself a name and doing for them^[4] great and awesome things by driving out before your people,^[5] whom you redeemed for yourself from Egypt, a nation and its gods? 25 And now, O Lord God, confirm forever the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, and do as you have spoken. 26 And your name will be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is God over Israel,’ and the house of your servant David will be established before you. 27 For you, O Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, have made this revelation to your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. 28 And now, O Lord God, you are God, and your words are true, and you have promised this good thing to your servant. (Joh 17:17) 29 Now therefore may it please you to bless the house of your servant, so that it may continue forever before you. For you, O Lord God, have spoken, and with your blessing shall the house of your servant be blessed forever.” (2Sa 22:51; Ps 89:28)

El pacto con David

1 Aconteció que cuando ya el rey habitaba en su casa, después que YHVH le había dado reposo de todos sus enemigos en derredor, 2 el rey dijo al profeta Natán: He aquí, yo habito en casa de cedro, pero el Arca de Dios está entre cortinas. 3 Y Natán respondió al rey: ¡Ve, haz todo lo que está en tu corazón, porque YHVH está contigo! 4 Pero aconteció que esa misma noche llegó palabra de YHVH a Natán, diciendo: 5 Ve y di a mi siervo, a David: Así dice YHVH: ¿Tú me edificarás Casa en que Yo habite? 6 Porque no he habitado en casa alguna desde el día en que hice subir a los hijos de Israel de Egipto hasta hoy, sino que estuve en tienda y en tabernáculo. 7 Doquiera que he estado yendo con todos los hijos de Israel ¿acaso he hablado palabra con alguna de las tribus de Israel, a quien haya mandado apacentar a mi pueblo Israel, para decirles: ¿Por qué no me edificáis una Casa de cedro? 8 Ahora pues, así dirás a mi siervo, a David: Así dice YHVH Sebaot: Yo te tomé del redil, de seguir tras el rebaño, para que fueras caudillo sobre mi pueblo, sobre Israel, 9 y he estado contigo en todo cuanto has andado, y he cortado de tu presencia a todos tus enemigos, y te haré un gran nombre, como el nombre de los grandes de la tierra. 10 Asimismo he dispuesto un lugar para mi pueblo, para Israel; y lo he plantado para que habite en él, y no sea más removido, ni los hijos de iniquidad continúen oprimiéndolo como al principio, 11 como desde el día en que puse jueces sobre mi pueblo Israel, y te daré descanso de todos tus enemigos. Además, YHVH te hace saber que YHVH te edificará casa. 12 Cuando tus días sean cumplidos y duermas con tus padres, entonces levantaré a tu descendiente después de ti, el cual saldrá de tus entrañas, y afirmaré su reino. 13 Él edificará casa a mi Nombre y Yo afirmaré el trono de su reino para siempre. 14 Yo le seré por padre y él me será por hijo. Cuando haga mal lo corregiré con vara de hombres y con azotes de hijos de hombre. 15 Pero mi misericordia no se apartará de él como la aparté de Saúl, a quien quité de delante de ti. 16 Tu casa y tu reino permanecerán para siempre ante ti, y tu trono será estable eternamente. 17 Conforme a todas estas palabras, y según toda esta visión, así habló Natán a David. 18 Entonces el rey David vino a sentarse ante YHVH y dijo: ¡Oh Adonay YHVH! ¿Quién soy yo y qué es mi casa, para que me hayas traído hasta aquí? 19 Y como si esto fuera poco ante tus ojos, oh Adonay YHVH, has hablado también acerca de la casa de tu siervo para un lejano porvenir. ¡Oh Adonay YHVH, cuán grande designio para un hombre! 20 ¿Y qué más puede decirte David? ¡Oh Adonay YHVH, Tú conoces a tu siervo! 21 Según tu palabra y conforme a tu corazón has hecho toda esta grandeza para darla a conocer a tu siervo. 22 Por tanto ¡cuán grande eres, oh Adonay YHVH! ¡Nadie hay como Tú, ni hay otro ’Elohim aparte de ti, conforme a todo lo que hemos escuchado con nuestros oídos! 23 ¿Y qué otra nación hay en la tierra como tu pueblo Israel, al cual ’Elohim vino a redimir como pueblo suyo, y a ponerle nombre, y a hacer por vosotros cosas grandes y terribles, expulsando a las naciones y a sus dioses ante el pueblo que libraste de Egipto? 24 Y has establecido a tu pueblo, Israel, como pueblo tuyo para siempre, y Tú, oh YHVH, has llegado a ser su Dios. 25 Ahora pues, YHVH ’Elohim, confirma para siempre la palabra que has hablado acerca de tu siervo y de su casa, y haz como Tú has dicho. 26 Que tu Nombre sea engrandecido para siempre, y que digan: ¡YHVH Sebaot es el Dios de Israel! Y que la casa de tu siervo David sea firme delante de ti. 27 Porque Tú, YHVH Sebaot, Dios de Israel, has despertado el oído de tu siervo, diciendo: Yo te edificaré casa. Por eso tu siervo ha hallado en su corazón osadía para elevar esta oración ante ti. 28 Ahora pues, Adonay YHVH, Tú mismo eres Ha-’Elohim, y tus palabras son verdad, y has hablado a tu siervo este bien. 29 Dígnate, pues, bendecir la casa de tu siervo, para que esté siempre en tu presencia, porque Tú, oh Adonay YHVH, has hablado, y con tu bendición, la casa de tu siervo será bendita para siempre.
