Solomon’s Prayer for Wisdom

1 Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt. He took Pharaoh’s daughter and brought her into the city of David until he had finished building his own house and the house of the Lord and the wall around Jerusalem. (1Ki 2:10; 1Ki 7:1; 1Ki 7:8; 1Ki 9:15; 1Ki 9:16; 1Ki 9:24; 2Ch 8:11)

2 The people were sacrificing at the high places, however, because no house had yet been built for the name of the Lord. (De 12:2; 1Ki 22:43) 3 Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places. 6 And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. 7 And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. 10 It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. 11 And God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, 12 behold, I now do according to your word. 15 And Solomon awoke, and behold, it was a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem and stood before the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants. (Ge 41:7)

Solomon’s Wisdom

16 Then two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. (Nu 27:2) 17 The one woman said, “Oh, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth to a child while she was in the house. 18 Then on the third day after I gave birth, this woman also gave birth. And we were alone. There was no one else with us in the house; only we two were in the house. 19 And this woman’s son died in the night, because she lay on him. 20 And she arose at midnight and took my son from beside me, while your servant slept, and laid him at her breast, and laid her dead son at my breast. 21 When I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, he was dead. But when I looked at him closely in the morning, behold, he was not the child that I had borne.” 22 But the other woman said, “No, the living child is mine, and the dead child is yours.” The first said, “No, the dead child is yours, and the living child is mine.” Thus they spoke before the king. 23 Then the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son that is alive, and your son is dead’; and the other says, ‘No; but your son is dead, and my son is the living one.’” 24 And the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So a sword was brought before the king. 25 And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one and half to the other.” 26 Then the woman whose son was alive said to the king, because her heart yearned for her son, “Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means put him to death.” But the other said, “He shall be neither mine nor yours; divide him.” (Ge 43:30; Isa 49:15; Jer 31:20) 27 Then the king answered and said, “Give the living child to the first woman, and by no means put him to death; she is his mother.” 28 And all Israel heard of the judgment that the king had rendered, and they stood in awe of the king, because they perceived that the wisdom of God was in him to do justice. Sabiduría de Salomón

1 Salomón emparentó con Faraón, rey de Egipto, al tomar por mujer a la hija de Faraón, y la trajo a la ciudad de David hasta que terminó de edificar su propia casa, y la Casa de YHVH, y el muro alrededor de Jerusalem. 2 Sólo que el pueblo ofrecía sacrificios en los lugares altos, porque en aquellos tiempos aún no había sido edificada Casa al nombre de YHVH. 3 Y Salomón amaba a YHVH y andaba en los caminos de su padre David, pero brindaba sus sacrificios y ofrendas en los lugares altos. 4 Y el rey iba a Gabaón para ofrecer allí sacrificios, por ser el lugar alto más importante. Salomón llegó a ofrecer mil holocaustos sobre aquel altar. 5 Y en Gabaón se apareció YHVH a Salomón en el sueño de la noche. Y le dijo ’Elohim: Pide lo que quieras que Yo te dé. 6 Y Salomón respondió: Tú has mostrado gran misericordia a tu siervo David, mi padre, porque él anduvo delante de ti con fidelidad, con justicia y con rectitud de corazón para contigo. Tú le has conservado esta gran misericordia, y le has dado un hijo que se siente en su trono, como en este día. 7 Y ahora, oh YHVH, Dios mío, Tú has constituido a tu siervo rey en lugar de mi padre David, aunque soy un joven pequeño, y no sé cómo salir ni cómo entrar. 8 Y tu siervo está en medio de tu pueblo, al cual escogiste; un pueblo tan numeroso que por su multitud no se puede contar ni se puede numerar. 9 Da pues a tu siervo un corazón que sepa escuchar, para juzgar a tu pueblo, y para discernir entre lo bueno y lo malo; porque, ¿quién será capaz de juzgar a este pueblo tuyo tan grande? 10 Y esta petición agradó a Adonay, por haber pedido Salomón semejante cosa. 11 Y ’Elohim le dijo: Porque has pedido esto, y no has pedido para ti una larga vida, ni has pedido para ti riquezas, ni has pedido la vida de tus enemigos, sino que has pedido para ti inteligencia para discernir justicia; 12 he aquí cumplo tu ruego y te doy un corazón sabio y entendido, tal que no ha habido otro antes de ti, ni lo habrá después de ti. 13 Y también te concedo lo que no has pedido, así riquezas como honores, de modo que no habrá entre los reyes hombre como tú en todos tus días. 14 Y si andas en mis caminos para cumplir mis estatutos y mis mandamientos, como anduvo David tu padre, te prolongaré tus días. 15 Y Salomón despertó, y he aquí era un sueño. Volviendo entonces a Jerusalem, se detuvo ante el Arca del Pacto de Adonay, e hizo subir holocaustos y brindó sacrificios de paz, e hizo un banquete para todos sus siervos. 16 Dos mujeres prostitutas vinieron al rey y se pusieron de pie delante de él. 17 Y dijo una de las mujeres: ¡Ay, señor mío! Esta mujer y yo habitamos en la misma casa; y di a luz mientras estaba con ella en la casa. 18 Y sucedió que tres días después de mi parto, esta mujer también dio a luz. Nosotras estábamos juntas y ningún extraño estaba con nosotras en la casa; sólo nosotras dos estábamos en la casa. 19 Y el hijo de esta mujer murió durante la noche, porque ella se durmió sobre él. 20 Y levantándose a medianoche, tomó a mi hijo de junto a mí, pues tu servidora estaba dormida, y lo hizo recostar en su regazo, en tanto que a su hijo muerto lo recostó en mi seno. 21 Cuando me levanté por la mañana para amamantar a mi hijo, ¡he aquí estaba muerto! Pero por la mañana lo observé bien, ¡y he aquí no era mi hijo, el que yo había parido! 22 Pero la otra mujer replicó: ¡No! Sino que mi hijo es el vivo y tu hijo el muerto. Y la otra volvió a decir: ¡No! ¡Tu hijo es el muerto y mi hijo el vivo! Y disputaban muchísimo delante del rey. 23 Entonces dijo el rey: Esta dice: Mi hijo es el que vive, y tu hijo es el muerto; y la otra dice: ¡No! Sino que tu hijo es el muerto, y mi hijo el vivo. 24 Y el rey dijo: ¡Traedme una espada! Cuando trajeron la espada ante el rey, 25 dispuso el rey: ¡Partid al niño vivo en dos, y dad la mitad a la una y la otra mitad a la otra! 26 Pero entonces, la mujer de quien era el hijo vivo habló al rey (porque sus entrañas se conmovieron por su hijo), y exclamó: ¡Ay, señor mío! Dad a ésta el niño vivo; pero no lo hagas morir. Pero la otra dijo: No sea ni para mí ni para ti. ¡Partidlo! 27 Entonces el rey, tomando la palabra, dijo: ¡Dadle a aquélla el niño vivo y no lo matéis! Ella es su madre. 28 Y todo Israel se enteró de la sentencia que había dado el rey, y tuvieron temor al rey, porque vieron que la sabiduría de Dios estaba en su corazón para hacer justicia.
