1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. (Mt 20:19; Mt 27:26; Mr 15:15; Lu 23:16) 2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. (Mt 27:27; Mr 15:16) 3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. 4 Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” (Joh 18:38; Joh 19:6) 5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” (Joh 19:2; Joh 19:14) 6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” (Joh 18:31; Joh 19:4) 7 The Jews[1] answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” (Le 24:16; Mt 26:63; Lu 22:70; Joh 5:17; Joh 10:33; Joh 10:36) 8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. (Mt 27:19) 9 He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. (Mt 26:63; Joh 7:27; Joh 18:33; Joh 18:37) 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.” (Mt 27:2; Joh 9:41; Joh 18:14; Joh 18:28; Ro 13:1) 12 From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” (Lu 23:2; Ac 3:13) 13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic[2] Gabbatha. (Mt 27:19) 14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.[3] He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” (Mt 27:62; Joh 18:28; Joh 19:5) 15 They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” (Lu 23:18; Ac 21:36) 16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, (Mt 27:26; Mr 15:15; Lu 23:25; Joh 18:36) 17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. (Mt 27:32; Mt 27:33; Mr 15:21; Mr 15:22; Lu 14:27; Lu 23:26; Lu 23:33) 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. (Mt 27:38; Mr 15:24; Mr 15:27; Lu 23:32) 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” (Mt 27:37; Mr 15:26; Lu 23:38) 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. (Nu 15:35; Joh 19:17; Heb 13:12) 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” (Ge 43:14; Es 4:16) 23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.[4] But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, (Mt 27:35; Mr 15:24; Lu 23:34) 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things, (Ps 22:18; Joh 13:18) 25 but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. (Mt 27:55; Mr 15:40; Lu 23:49) 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” (Joh 2:4; Joh 13:23) 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. (Joh 16:32) 28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” (Ps 69:21; Joh 4:6; Joh 19:24; Joh 19:30) 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. (Mt 27:48; Mr 15:36; Lu 23:36) 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. (Mt 27:50; Mr 15:37; Lu 23:46; Joh 17:4; Joh 19:28; Ac 13:29) 31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. (Ex 12:16; De 21:23; Jos 8:29; Jos 10:26; Joh 19:14) 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. (Joh 19:18) 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. (1Jo 5:6; 1Jo 5:8) 35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. (Joh 15:27; Joh 20:31; Joh 21:24; 1Jo 1:1; Re 1:2) 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” (Ex 12:46; Nu 9:12; Ps 34:20; Mt 1:22; 1Co 5:7) 37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.” (Zec 12:10; Re 1:7) 38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. (Mt 27:57; Mr 15:42; Lu 23:50; Joh 7:13) 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus[5] by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds[6] in weight. (Ps 45:8; Pr 7:17; So 4:14; Mr 16:1; Lu 24:1; Joh 3:1; Joh 7:50) 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. (2Ch 16:14; Lu 24:12; Joh 11:44; Joh 20:5; Ac 5:6) 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. (2Ki 21:18; 2Ki 21:26; Mr 11:2; Lu 23:53; Joh 20:15) 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. (Joh 19:14; Joh 19:31; Joh 19:41)

1 Tedy vzal Pilát Ježíše, a zbičoval jej. 2 A žoldnéři zpletše korunu z trní, vstavili na hlavu jeho, a pláštěm šarlatovým přioděli jej. 3 A říkali: Zdráv buď, Králi Židovský. A dávali jemu poličky. 4 I vyšel opět ven Pilát, a řekl jim: Aj, vyvedu jej vám ven, abyste poznali, žeť na něm žádné viny nenalézám. 5 Tedy vyšel Ježíš ven, nesa trnovou korunu a plášť šarlatový. I řekl jim Pilát: Aj, člověk. 6 A jakž jej uzřeli přední kněží a služebníci jejich, zkřikli řkouce: Ukřižuj, ukřižuj ho. Dí jim Pilát: Vezmětež vy jej a ukřižujte, nebo já na něm viny nenalézám. 7 Odpověděli jemu Židé: My Zákon máme, a podle Zákona našeho máť umříti, nebo Synem Božím se činil. 8 A když Pilát uslyšel tuto řeč, více se obával. 9 I všel do radného domu zase, a řekl Ježíšovi: Odkud jsi ty? Ale Ježíš nedal jemu odpovědi. 10 Tedy řekl jemu Pilát: Nemluvíš se mnou? Nevíš-liž, že mám moc ukřižovati tě a moc mám propustiti tebe? 11 Odpověděl Ježíš: Neměl bys nade mnou moci nižádné, byť nebylo dáno s hůry; protož, kdoť jest mne tobě vydal, většíť hřích má. 12 Od té chvíle hledal Pilát propustiti ho. Ale Židé volali řkouce: Propustíš-li tohoto, nejsi přítel císařův; nebo každý, kdož se králem činí, protiví se císaři. 13 Tedy Pilát uslyšev tu řeč, vyvedl ven Ježíše, a sedl na soudné stolici na místě, kteréž slove Litostrotos, a Židovsky Gabbata. 14 A byl den připravování před velikonocí, okolo šesté hodiny. I řekl Židům: Aj, král váš. 15 Oni pak zkřikli: Vezmi, vezmi a ukřižuj jej. Řekl jim Pilát: Krále vašeho ukřižuji? Odpověděli přední kněží: Nemámeť krále, než císaře. 16 Tedy vydal jim ho, aby byl ukřižován. I pojali Ježíše a vedli jej ven. 17 A on nesa kříž svůj, šel až na místo, kteréž slove popravné, a Židovsky Golgota. 18 Kdežto ukřižovali ho, a s ním jiné dva s obou stran, a v prostředku Ježíše. 19 Napsal pak i nápis Pilát, a vstavil na kříž. A bylo napsáno: Ježíš Nazaretský, Král Židovský. 20 Ten pak nápis mnozí z Židů čtli; nebo blízko města bylo to místo, kdež ukřižován byl Ježíš. A bylo psáno Židovsky, Řecky a Latině. 21 Tedy přední kněží Židovští řekli Pilátovi: Nepiš: Král Židovský, ale že on řekl: Král Židovský jsem. 22 Odpověděl Pilát: Co jsem psal, psal jsem. 23 Žoldnéři pak, když Ježíše ukřižovali, vzali roucha jeho, a učinili čtyři díly, každému rytíři díl jeden, vzali také i sukni, kterážto sukně byla nesšívaná, ale odvrchu všecka naskrze setkaná. 24 I řekli mezi sebou: Neroztrhujme jí, ale losujme o ni, čí bude. Aby se naplnilo písmo, řkoucí: Rozdělili sobě roucho mé, a o můj oděv metali los. A žoldnéři zajisté tak učinili. 25 Stály pak blízko kříže Ježíšova matka jeho a sestra matky jeho, Maria, manželka Kleofášova, a Maria Magdaléna. 26 Tedy Ježíš uzřev matku a učedlníka tu stojícího, kteréhož miloval, řekl k matce své: Ženo, aj, syn tvůj. 27 Potom řekl učedlníkovi: Aj, matka tvá. A od té hodiny přijal ji učedlník ten k sobě. 28 Potom věda Ježíš, že již všecko jiné dokonáno jest, aby se naplnilo písmo, řekl: Žízním. 29 Byla pak tu postavena nádoba plná octa. Tedy oni naplnili houbu octem, a obloživše yzopem, podali k ústům jeho. 30 A když okusil Ježíš octa, řekl: Dokonánoť jest. A nakloniv hlavy, ducha Otci poručil. 31 Židé pak, aby nezůstala na kříži těla na sobotu, poněvadž byl den připravování, (byl zajisté veliký ten den sobotní,) prosili Piláta, aby zlámáni byli hnátové jejich a aby byli složeni. 32 I přišli žoldnéři, a prvnímu zajisté zlámali hnáty, i druhému, kterýž ukřižován byl s ním. 33 Ale k Ježíšovi přišedše, jakž uzřeli jej již mrtvého, nelámali hnátů jeho. 34 Ale jeden z žoldnéřů bok jeho kopím otevřel, a hned vyšla krev a voda. 35 A ten, jenž viděl, svědectví vydal, a pravé jest svědectví jeho; onť ví, že pravé věci praví, abyste i vy věřili. 36 Stalo se pak to, aby se naplnilo Písmo: Kost jeho žádná nebude zlámána. 37 A opět jiné Písmo dí: Uzříť, v koho jsou bodli. 38 Potom pak prosil Piláta Jozef z Arimatie, (kterýž byl učedlník Ježíšův, ale tajný, pro strach Židovský,) aby sňal tělo Ježíšovo. I dopustil Pilát. A on přišed, i sňal tělo Ježíšovo. 39 Přišel pak i Nikodém, (kterýž byl prve přišel k Ježíšovi v noci,) nesa smíšení mirry a aloes okolo sta liber. 40 Tedy vzali tělo Ježíšovo, a obvinuli je prostěradly s vonnými věcmi, jakž obyčej jest Židům se pochovávati. 41 A byla na tom místě, kdež ukřižován byl, zahrada, a v zahradě hrob nový, v němžto ještě žádný nebyl pochován. 42 Protož tu pro den připravování Židovský, že blízko byl hrob, položili Ježíše.
