Paul Appeals to Caesar

1 Now three days after Festus had arrived in the province, he went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea. (Ac 23:34) 2 And the chief priests and the principal men of the Jews laid out their case against Paul, and they urged him, (Ac 25:15) 3 asking as a favor against Paul^[1] that he summon him to Jerusalem—because they were planning an ambush to kill him on the way. (Ac 9:24) 4 Festus replied that Paul was being kept at Caesarea and that he himself intended to go there shortly. 5 “So,” said he, “let the men of authority among you go down with me, and if there is anything wrong about the man, let them bring charges against him.” 6 After he stayed among them not more than eight or ten days, he went down to Caesarea. And the next day he took his seat on the tribunal and ordered Paul to be brought. (Mt 27:19; Ac 25:10; Ac 25:17) 7 When he had arrived, the Jews who had come down from Jerusalem stood around him, bringing many and serious charges against him that they could not prove. (Ac 24:13) 8 Paul argued in his defense, “Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I committed any offense.” (Joh 7:19; Joh 19:7; Joh 19:12; Ac 6:13; Ac 24:12; Ac 28:17)

9 But Festus, wishing to do the Jews a favor, said to Paul, “Do you wish to go up to Jerusalem and there be tried on these charges before me?” (Ac 24:27) 10 But Paul said, “I am standing before Caesar’s tribunal, where I ought to be tried. To the Jews I have done no wrong, as you yourself know very well. (Ac 25:6; Ac 25:17) 11 If then I am a wrongdoer and have committed anything for which I deserve to die, I do not seek to escape death. But if there is nothing to their charges against me, no one can give me up to them. I appeal to Caesar.” (Ac 26:32; Ac 28:19) 12 Then Festus, when he had conferred with his council, answered, “To Caesar you have appealed; to Caesar you shall go.”

Paul Before Agrippa and Bernice

13 Now when some days had passed, Agrippa the king and Bernice arrived at Caesarea and greeted Festus. 14 And as they stayed there many days, Festus laid Paul’s case before the king, saying, “There is a man left prisoner by Felix, (Ac 24:27) 15 and when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews laid out their case against him, asking for a sentence of condemnation against him. (Ac 25:2) 16 I answered them that it was not the custom of the Romans to give up anyone before the accused met the accusers face to face and had opportunity to make his defense concerning the charge laid against him. (Joh 7:51; Ac 23:30; Ac 25:4) 17 So when they came together here, I made no delay, but on the next day took my seat on the tribunal and ordered the man to be brought. (Ac 25:6; Ac 25:7; Ac 25:10; Ac 25:24)

18 When the accusers stood up, they brought no charge in his case of such evils as I supposed. 19 Rather they had certain points of dispute with him about their own religion and about a certain Jesus, who was dead, but whom Paul asserted to be alive. (Ac 17:18; Ac 18:15; Ac 23:29) 20 Being at a loss how to investigate these questions, I asked whether he wanted to go to Jerusalem and be tried there regarding them. (Ac 25:9) 21 But when Paul had appealed to be kept in custody for the decision of the emperor, I ordered him to be held until I could send him to Caesar.” (Ac 25:11; Ac 25:25) 22 Then Agrippa said to Festus, “I would like to hear the man myself.” “Tomorrow,” said he, “you will hear him.” (Ac 9:15) 23 So on the next day Agrippa and Bernice came with great pomp, and they entered the audience hall with the military tribunes and the prominent men of the city. Then, at the command of Festus, Paul was brought in. (Ac 25:13; Ac 26:30) 24 And Festus said, “King Agrippa and all who are present with us, you see this man about whom the whole Jewish people petitioned me, both in Jerusalem and here, shouting that he ought not to live any longer. (Ac 22:22; Ac 25:2; Ac 25:7) 25 But I found that he had done nothing deserving death. And as he himself appealed to the emperor, I decided to go ahead and send him. (Ac 23:29; Ac 25:11; Ac 25:21) 26 But I have nothing definite to write to my lord about him. Therefore I have brought him before you all, and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that, after we have examined him, I may have something to write. 27 For it seems to me unreasonable, in sending a prisoner, not to indicate the charges against him.”

1 Tedy Festus vladařství ujav, po třech dnech přijel z Cesaree do Jeruzaléma. 2 I oznámili jemu nejvyšší kněz a přednější z Židů o Pavlovi, a prosili ho, 3 Žádajíce té milosti proti němu, aby jej kázal přivésti do Jeruzaléma, zálohy učinivše jemu, aby zabit byl na cestě. 4 A Festus odpověděl, že má Pavel ostříhán býti v Cesaree, a on sám že tudíž tam přijede. 5 Protož (řekl), kteříž z vás mohou, nechť tam také se vypraví spolu se mnou, a jest-li jaká vina na tom muži, nechať naň žalují. 6 A pobyv mezi nimi nic více než deset dní, jel do Cesaree. A druhého dne posadiv se na soudné stolici, kázal Pavla přivésti. 7 Kterýžto když byl přiveden, obstoupili jej ti, jenž byli přišli z Jeruzaléma, Židé, mnohé a těžké žaloby proti Pavlovi vedouce, kterýchž nemohli dovésti, 8 Nebo Pavel při všem mírnou zprávu dával, že ani proti Zákonu Židovskému, ani proti chrámu, ani proti císaři nic neprovinil. 9 Ale Festus, chtěje se Židům zalíbiti, odpověděv, řekl Pavlovi: Chceš-li jíti do Jeruzaléma a tam o to souzen býti přede mnou? 10 I řekl Pavel: Před stolicí císařovou chci státi a tam souzen býti. Židům jsem nic neublížil, jakož i ty dobře to víš. 11 Nebo jestližeť jim v čem ubližuji, aneb něco smrti hodného jsem spáchal, neodpírámť umříti; a pakliť nic toho při mně není, z čehož mne oni viní, žádnýť mne jim nemůže dáti. K císaři se odvolávám. 12 Tedy Festus promluviv s radou, odpověděl: K císařis se odvolal? K císaři půjdeš. 13 A po několika dnech král Agrippa a Bernice přijeli do Cesaree, aby pozdravili Festa. 14 A když tu za mnoho dní pobyli, oznámil Festus králi o Pavlově při, řka: Muž jeden ostaven jest od Felixa v vězení, 15 O kterémž, když jsem byl v Jeruzalémě, oznámili mi přední kněží a starší Židovští, žádajíce na něj ortele. 16 Kterýmž jsem odpověděl, že není obyčej Římanům vydati člověka na smrt, prve nežli by ten, na kohož se žaloba děje, přítomné měl žalobníky a volnost k odpovídání na to, z čehož by byl obviňován. 17 A protož když se byli sem sešli, hned beze všeho meškání, druhý den posadiv se na soudné stolici, rozkázal jsem přivésti toho muže. 18 Jehožto žalobníci tu stojíce, z ničeho takového nevinili ho, čehož jsem já se domníval. 19 Ale o nějaké otázky při tom svém náboženství měli s ním nesnáz, a o jakémsi Ježíšovi mrtvém, o kterémž jistil Pavel, že jest živ. 20 Já pak maje tu při v pochybnosti, řekl jsem jemu, chtěl-li by jíti do Jeruzaléma, a tam o ty věci souzen býti. 21 A když se on odvolal, aby byl chován k soudu Augustovu, kázal jsem ho hlídati, až bych jej poslal k císaři. 22 Tedy Agrippa řekl k Festovi: Chtělť bych i já rád člověka toho slyšeti. A on řekl: Zítra ho uslyšíš. 23 Nazejtří pak, když přišel Agrippa a Bernice s velikou slavou, a vešli na síň s hejtmany a s lidmi nejznamenitějšími města toho, k rozkázání Festovu přiveden jest Pavel. 24 I řekl Festus: Králi Agrippo a všickni, kteříž jste tuto s námi, vidíte tohoto, za nějžto všecko množství Židů prosili mne, i v Jeruzalémě i zde, křičíce, že takový nemá více živ býti. 25 Já pak shledav to, že nic hodného smrti neučinil, však když se sám k Augustovi odvolal, umínil jsem jej tam poslati. 26 O němž, co bych jistého napsal pánu svému, nevím. Protož jsem jej teď přivedl před vás, a zvláště před tebe, králi Agrippo, abych vyptaje se, věděl, co psáti. 27 Nebo zdá mi se to neslušné býti poslati vězně a pře jeho neoznámiti.
