Gegen die Priester

1 Und nun für euch, ihr Priester, dieses Gebot! 2 Wenn ihr nicht hört und wenn ihr ⟨es euch⟩ nicht zu Herzen nehmt, meinem Namen Ehre zu geben, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen, dann sende ich den Fluch unter euch und verfluche eure Segensgaben^[1]; ja, ich habe sie schon verflucht, weil ihr es nicht zu Herzen nehmt. (5Mo 28,15; Jer 13,16; Mal 3,9) 3 Siehe, ich bedrohe^[2] euch die Saat^[3] und streue Mist auf euer Gesicht, den Mist eurer Feste; und man wird euch zu ihm hintragen. (1Sam 2,30; Joe 1,10; Nah 3,6) 4 So werdet ihr erkennen, dass ich dieses Gebot zu euch gesandt habe, damit mein Bund mit Levi ⟨gültig⟩ bleibt, spricht der HERR der Heerscharen. (4Mo 18,2) 5 Mein Bund mit ihm war das Leben und der Friede; und ich gab sie ihm. ⟨Er war⟩^[4] Furcht, und er fürchtete mich, und vor meinem Namen erschauerte er. In Frieden und Geradheit lebte^[5] er mit mir, und viele brachte er zur Umkehr von Schuld. (1Mo 5,22; Jak 5,20) 7 Denn die Lippen des Priesters sollen Erkenntnis bewahren, und Weisung sucht man aus seinem Mund; denn er ist ein Bote des HERRN der Heerscharen. 8 Ihr aber, ihr seid abgewichen vom Weg, ihr habt viele durch ⟨falsche⟩ Weisung zu Fall gebracht^[6], habt den Bund Levis gebrochen^[7], spricht der HERR der Heerscharen. (1Sam 2,24; 2Kön 16,11; Neh 13,29; Jer 2,8; Hes 22,26; Hes 44,7; Mal 1,6; Mt 23,3)

9 So habe denn auch ich euch verächtlich und niedrig gemacht für das ganze Volk, weil^[8] ihr meine Wege nicht beachtet und die Person anseht^[9], wenn ihr Weisung gebt. (Hi 32,21; Spr 12,8; Mi 3,11)

Gegen Mischehen und Ehescheidung

10 Haben wir nicht alle einen Vater? Hat nicht ein Gott uns geschaffen? Warum handeln wir treulos aneinander, um den Bund unserer Väter zu entweihen? (Hi 31,15; Jes 63,16; Jes 64,7; 1Kor 8,6)

11 Juda hat treulos gehandelt, und ein Gräuel ist in Israel und in Jerusalem verübt worden; denn Juda hat das Heiligtum des HERRN entweiht, das er liebt, und hat die Tochter eines ausländischen Gottes geheiratet. (Jer 3,10) 12 Dem Mann, der das tut, wird der HERR ⟨alles⟩ ausrotten, was lebt und antwortet^[10], aus den Zelten Jakobs, ⟨selbst⟩ wenn er dem HERRN der Heerscharen eine Opfergabe darbringt. Deswegen weil der HERR Zeuge gewesen ist zwischen dir und der Frau deiner Jugend, an der du treulos gehandelt hast, wo sie ⟨doch⟩ deine Gefährtin ist und die Frau deines Bundes^[12]. 15 Und hat er sie nicht zu Einem gemacht? Zu einem Fleisch^[13], in dem Geist ist. Und was erstrebt das Eine? Nachkommenschaft von Gott.^[14] So hütet euch bei eurem Leben^[15]! Und an der Frau deiner Jugend handle nicht treulos! 16 Denn er hasst Scheidung^[16], hat der HERR, der Gott Israels, gesagt, und dass man sein Gewand mit Gewalttat bedeckt^[17], spricht der HERR der Heerscharen. So hütet euch bei eurem Leben^[18] und handelt nicht treulos! (Spr 5,20; Mt 19,5; 1Kor 7,11)

Der Tag des HERRN – Gericht für Juda

17 Ihr ermüdet den HERRN mit euren Worten. Doch ihr sagt: Womit ermüden wir ihn?^[19] – Damit dass ihr sagt: Jeder, der Böses tut, ist gut in den Augen des HERRN, und an solchen hat er Gefallen; oder: Wo ist der Gott des Gerichts? (Jes 43,24; Jer 12,1; Mal 3,13)

Additional warning to the priests

1 ‘And now, you priests, this warning is for you. 2 If you do not listen, and if you do not resolve to honour my name,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘I will send a curse on you, and I will curse your blessings. Yes, I have already cursed them, because you have not resolved to honour me. 3 ‘Because of you I will rebuke your descendants^[1]; I will smear on your faces the dung from your festival sacrifices, and you will be carried off with it. 4 And you will know that I have sent you this warning so that my covenant with Levi may continue,’ says the Lord Almighty. 5 ‘My covenant was with him, a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him; this called for reverence and he revered me and stood in awe of my name. 6 True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin. 7 ‘For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, because he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty and people seek instruction from his mouth. 8 But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi,’ says the Lord Almighty. 9 ‘So I have caused you to be despised and humiliated before all the people, because you have not followed my ways but have shown partiality in matters of the law.’

Breaking covenant through divorce

10 Do we not all have one Father^[2]? Did not one God create us? Why do we profane the covenant of our ancestors by being unfaithful to one another? 11 Judah has been unfaithful. A detestable thing has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem: Judah has desecrated the sanctuary the Lord loves by marrying women who worship a foreign god. 12 As for the man who does this, whoever he may be, may the Lord remove him from the tents of Jacob^[3] – even though he brings an offering to the Lord Almighty. 13 Another thing you do: you flood the Lord’s altar with tears. You weep and wail because he no longer looks with favour on your offerings or accepts them with pleasure from your hands. 14 You ask, ‘Why?’ It is because the Lord is the witness between you and the wife of your youth. You have been unfaithful to her, though she is your partner, the wife of your marriage covenant. 15 Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring.^[4] So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth. 16 ‘The man who hates and divorces his wife,’ says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘does violence to the one he should protect,’^[5] says the Lord Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.

Breaking covenant through injustice

17 You have wearied the Lord with your words. ‘How have we wearied him?’ you ask. By saying, ‘All who do evil are good in the eyes of the Lord, and he is pleased with them’ or ‘Where is the God of justice?’
