Die Magier aus dem Osten

1 Als aber Jesus zu Bethlehem in Judäa geboren war, in den Tagen des Königs Herodes^[1], siehe, da kamen Weise^[2] vom Morgenland^[3] nach Jerusalem, die sprachen: (Lk 1,5; Lk 2,4) 2 Wo ist der König der Juden, der geboren worden ist? Denn wir haben seinen Stern im Morgenland^[4] gesehen und sind gekommen, ihm zu huldigen^[5]. (4Mo 24,17; Mt 27,11; Joh 19,19) 3 Als aber der König Herodes es hörte, wurde er bestürzt und ganz Jerusalem mit ihm; 4 und er versammelte alle Hohen Priester^[6] und Schriftgelehrten des Volkes und erkundigte sich bei ihnen, wo der Christus geboren werden solle. 5 Sie aber sagten ihm: Zu Bethlehem in Judäa; denn so steht durch den Propheten geschrieben: (Joh 7,42) 6 »Und du, Bethlehem, Land Juda, bist keineswegs die geringste unter den Fürsten Judas, denn aus dir wird ein Führer hervorkommen, der mein Volk Israel hüten wird.« (2Sam 5,2; Ps 78,71; Jes 40,11; Mi 5,1)

7 Dann berief Herodes die Weisen heimlich und erforschte genau von ihnen die Zeit der Erscheinung des Sternes; 8 und er sandte sie nach Bethlehem und sprach: Zieht hin und forscht genau nach dem Kind! Wenn ihr es aber gefunden habt, so berichtet es mir, damit auch ich komme und ihm huldige^[7]. 9 Sie aber zogen hin, als sie den König gehört hatten. Und siehe, der Stern, den sie im Morgenland gesehen hatten, ging vor ihnen her, bis er kam und oben über ⟨der Stelle⟩ stand, wo das Kind war. 10 Als sie aber den Stern sahen, freuten sie sich mit sehr großer Freude. (Jon 4,6) 11 Und als sie in das Haus gekommen waren, sahen sie das Kind mit Maria, seiner Mutter, und sie fielen nieder und huldigten ihm^[8], und sie öffneten ihre Schätze^[9] und opferten ihm Gaben: Gold und Weihrauch und Myrrhe^[10]. (Ps 72,10; Jes 60,6; Lk 2,16) 12 Und als sie im Traum eine göttliche Weisung empfangen hatten, nicht wieder zu Herodes zurückzukehren, zogen sie auf einem anderen Weg hin in ihr Land.

Flucht nach Ägypten – Kindermord zu Bethlehem

13 Als sie aber hingezogen waren, siehe, da erscheint ein Engel des Herrn dem Josef im Traum und spricht: Steh auf, nimm das Kind und seine Mutter zu dir und fliehe nach Ägypten, und bleibe dort, bis ich es dir sage! Denn Herodes wird das Kind suchen, um es umzubringen. (1Kön 11,40; Jer 26,21; Mt 1,20; Lk 13,31; Offb 12,4)

14 Er aber stand auf, nahm das Kind und seine Mutter des Nachts zu sich und zog hin nach Ägypten. 15 Und er war dort bis zum Tod des Herodes; damit erfüllt wurde, was von dem Herrn geredet ist durch den Propheten, der spricht: »Aus Ägypten habe ich meinen Sohn gerufen.« (2Mo 4,22; Hos 11,1) 16 Da ergrimmte Herodes sehr, als er sah, dass er von den Weisen hintergangen worden war; und er sandte hin und ließ alle Jungen töten, die in Bethlehem und in seinem ganzen Gebiet waren, von zwei Jahren und darunter, nach der Zeit, die er von den Weisen genau erforscht hatte. 17 Da wurde erfüllt, was durch den Propheten Jeremia geredet ist, der spricht: 18 »Eine Stimme ist in Rama gehört worden, Weinen und viel Wehklagen: Rahel beweint ihre Kinder, und sie wollte sich nicht trösten lassen, weil sie nicht ⟨mehr⟩ sind.« (Jer 31,15)

Rückkehr aus Ägypten

19 Als aber Herodes gestorben war, siehe, da erscheint ein Engel des Herrn dem Josef in Ägypten im Traum (Mt 2,13) 20 und spricht: Steh auf, nimm das Kind und seine Mutter zu dir und zieh in das Land Israel! Denn sie sind gestorben, die dem Kind nach dem Leben trachteten. (2Mo 4,19) 21 Und er stand auf und nahm das Kind und seine Mutter zu sich, und er kam in das Land Israel. 22 Als er aber hörte, dass Archelaus^[11] über Judäa herrschte^[12] anstelle seines Vaters Herodes, fürchtete er sich, dahin zu gehen; und als er im Traum eine göttliche Weisung empfangen hatte, zog er hin in die Gegenden von Galiläa (Mt 2,13) 23 und kam und wohnte in einer Stadt, genannt Nazareth; damit erfüllt wurde, was durch die Propheten geredet ist: »Er wird Nazoräer^[13] genannt werden.« (Mt 21,11; Mt 26,71; Mk 1,1; Mk 1,9; Mk 1,24; Lk 1,26; Lk 3,1; Lk 18,37; Joh 1,19; Joh 1,45; Joh 18,5; Apg 10,38; Apg 22,8)

The Magi visit the Messiah

1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi^[1] from the east came to Jerusalem 2 and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’ 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 ‘In Bethlehem in Judea,’ they replied, ‘for this is what the prophet has written: 6 ‘ “But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.” ’ (Mi 5,2; Mi 5,4) 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, ‘Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.’ 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

The escape to Egypt

13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up,’ he said, ‘take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.’ 14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘Out of Egypt I called my son.’ (Hos 11,1) 16 When Herod realised that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: 18 ‘A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.’ (Jer 31,15)

The return to Nazareth

19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 and said, ‘Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.’ 21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets, that he would be called a Nazarene.

1 Gesù nacque nella cittadina di Betlemme, in Giudea, durante il regno di Erode. In quel periodo alcuni magi arrivarono a Gerusalemme dallʼOriente e chiesero: 2 «Dovʼè il re dei Giudei appena nato? Abbiamo visto la sua stella nei lontani paesi dʼOriente e siamo venuti qui per adorarlo». 3 Il re Erode rimase turbato da queste parole, e con lui gli abitanti di Gerusalemme. 4 Egli riunì tutti i capi religiosi. «Ci hanno mai detto i profeti dove sarebbe nato il Messia?» chiese il re. 5 «Sì, a Betlemme», risposero, «così infatti scrisse il profeta Michea: 6 “O piccola Betlemme, tu non sei la meno importante fra i villaggi della Giudea, perché da te sorgerà un principe, che guiderà il mio popolo Israele”». 7 Allora Erode chiese di parlare in privato con i magi. Durante questo colloquio, scoprì il momento esatto in cui la stella era apparsa e disse loro: 8 «Andate a Betlemme a cercare il bambino. Quando lʼavrete trovato, venite ad avvertirmi, così anchʼio potrò andare ad adorarlo!» 9 Dopo questo incontro, i magi ripresero il loro viaggio. Poi presentarono i loro doni e glieli offrirono: oro, incenso e mirra. 12 Ma nel viaggio di ritorno verso il loro paese, non passarono più per Gerusalemme ad informare Erode, perché Dio li aveva avvertiti in sogno di seguire unʼaltra strada. 13 Partiti i magi, un angelo del Signore apparve in sogno a Giuseppe. «Àlzati e fuggi in Egitto col bambino e sua madre», disse lʼangelo, «e restaci finché non ti dirò di ritornare, perché il re Erode cercherà di uccidere il bimbo!» 14 Quella notte stessa Giuseppe partì con Maria e il bambino per lʼEgitto, 15 dove rimasero fino alla morte di Erode. Così sʼavverava la predizione del profeta: «Ho chiamato mio figlio dallʼEgitto».

La strage degli innocenti

16 Erode andò su tutte le furie quando venne a sapere che i magi si erano presi gioco di lui. Mandò i suoi soldati a Betlemme e ordinò loro di uccidere tutti i bambini maschi al di sotto dei due anni, sia in città che nelle campagne circostanti, perché i magi gli avevano detto che la stella era apparsa loro due anni prima. 17 Con questa brutale azione di Erode si avverava la profezia di Geremia: 18 «Grida di dolore si odono da Rama, un pianto irrefrenabile; è Rachele sconsolata che piange per i suoi figli, perché sono morti». 19 Dopo la morte di Erode, un angelo del Signore apparve in sogno a Giuseppe in Egitto e gli disse: 20 «Àlzati e riporta il bambino e sua madre in Israele, perché ormai quelli che volevano uccidere il bimbo sono tutti morti». 21 E Giuseppe ritornò immediatamente in Israele con Gesù e sua madre. 22 Ma, sulla via del ritorno, apprese con timore che il nuovo re era Archelao, figlio di Erode. Sempre in sogno, fu avvertito di non tornare in Giudea; si stabilirono allora tutti e tre in Galilea, 23 a Nazaret. Si realizzava così la predizione del profeta concernente il Messia: «Egli sarà chiamato Nazareno».
