Johannes der Täufer

1 In jenen Tagen aber kommt Johannes der Täufer und predigt in der Wüste von Judäa (Joh 1,6) 2 und spricht: Tut Buße! Denn das Reich^[1] der Himmel ist nahe gekommen. (Dan 2,44; Mt 4,17; Mt 10,7; Mk 1,15; Mk 6,12; Lk 10,9; Apg 2,38)

3 Denn dieser ist der, von dem durch den Propheten Jesaja geredet ist, der spricht: »Stimme eines Rufenden in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des Herrn, macht gerade seine Pfade!« (Jes 40,3; Jes 57,14) 4 Er aber, Johannes, hatte seine Kleidung von Kamelhaaren und einen ledernen Gürtel um seine Lenden^[2]; seine Speise aber waren Heuschrecken und wilder Honig. (2Kön 1,8; Mt 11,18; Lk 7,25) 5 Da ging zu ihm hinaus Jerusalem und ganz Judäa und die ganze Umgegend des Jordan; (Mt 11,7) 6 und sie wurden von ihm im Jordanfluss getauft, indem sie ihre Sünden bekannten. (Joh 3,23) 7 Als er aber viele der Pharisäer^[3] und Sadduzäer^[4] zu seiner Taufe kommen sah, sprach er zu ihnen: Otternbrut! Wer hat euch gewiesen, dem kommenden Zorn zu entfliehen? 8 Bringt nun der Buße würdige Frucht; (Apg 26,20) 9 und meint nicht, bei euch selbst zu sagen: Wir haben Abraham zum Vater! Denn ich sage euch, dass Gott dem Abraham aus diesen Steinen Kinder zu erwecken vermag. (Joh 8,39; Röm 2,28) 10 Schon ist aber die Axt an die Wurzel der Bäume gelegt; jeder Baum nun, der nicht gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und ins Feuer geworfen. (Mt 7,19; Lk 13,7; Joh 15,2) 11 Ich zwar taufe euch mit^[5] Wasser zur Buße; der aber nach mir kommt, ist stärker als ich, dessen Sandalen zu tragen ich nicht würdig bin; er wird euch mit^[6] Heiligem Geist und Feuer taufen; (Joh 1,15; Joh 1,33; Apg 1,5; Apg 13,24)

12 seine Worfschaufel ist in seiner Hand, und er wird seine Tenne durch und durch reinigen und seinen Weizen in die Scheune sammeln, die Spreu aber wird er mit unauslöschlichem Feuer verbrennen. (Mt 13,30; Mk 1,9; Mk 9,48; Lk 3,21; Joh 1,29)

Die Taufe Jesu

13 Dann kommt Jesus aus Galiläa an den Jordan zu Johannes, um sich von ihm taufen zu lassen^[7]. 14 Johannes aber wehrte ihm und sprach: Ich habe nötig, von dir getauft zu werden. Und du kommst zu mir? (Joh 13,6) 15 Jesus aber antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Lass es jetzt ⟨so sein⟩! Denn so gehört es sich für uns, alle Gerechtigkeit zu erfüllen. Da lässt er ihn. (Mt 5,17) 16 Und als Jesus getauft war, stieg er sogleich aus dem Wasser herauf; und siehe, die Himmel wurden ihm^[8] geöffnet, und er sah den Geist Gottes wie eine Taube herabfahren und auf sich^[9] kommen. John the Baptist prepares the way

1 In those days John the Baptist came and preached in the Desert of Judea. 2 He said, ‘Turn away from your sins! The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 3 John is the one Isaiah the prophet had spoken about. He had said, ‘A messenger is calling out in the desert, “Prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight paths for him.” ’ (Jes 40,3) 4 John’s clothes were made out of camel’s hair. He had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea. They also came from the whole area around the River Jordan. 6 When they confessed their sins, John baptised them in the Jordan. 7 John saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptising. He said to them, ‘You are like a nest of poisonous snakes! Who warned you to escape the coming of God’s anger? 8 Live in a way that shows you have turned away from your sins. 9 Don’t think you can say to yourselves, “Abraham is our father.” I tell you, God can raise up children for Abraham even from these stones. 10 The axe is ready to cut the roots of the trees. All the trees that don’t produce good fruit will be cut down. They will be thrown into the fire. 11 ‘I baptise you with water, calling you to turn away from your sins. But after me, someone is coming who is more powerful than I am. I’m not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His pitchfork is in his hand to clear the straw from his threshing-floor. He will gather his wheat into the storeroom. But he will burn the husks with fire that can’t be put out.’

Jesus is baptised

13 Jesus came from Galilee to the River Jordan. He wanted to be baptised by John. 14 But John tried to stop him. So he told Jesus, ‘I need to be baptised by you. So why do you come to me?’ 15 Jesus replied, ‘Let it be this way for now. It is right for us to do this. It carries out God’s holy plan.’ Then John agreed. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptised, he came up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened. Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove. 17 A voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, and I love him. I am very pleased with him.’
