1 Und es geschah im vierten Jahr Jojakims, des Sohnes Josias, des Königs von Juda, da geschah dieses Wort von dem HERRN zu Jeremia: (Jer 25,1; Jer 45,1) 2 Nimm dir eine Schriftrolle und schreib darauf all die Worte, die ich zu dir geredet habe über Israel und über Juda und über alle Nationen, von dem Tag an, da ich zu dir geredet habe, von den Tagen Josias an bis auf diesen Tag! 3 Vielleicht wird das Haus Juda auf all das Unheil hören, das ich ihnen zu tun gedenke, dass sie umkehren, jeder von seinem bösen Weg, und ich ihre Schuld und ihre Sünde vergebe. – (Jer 18,8; Apg 3,19; Offb 2,5) 4 Da rief Jeremia Baruch herbei, den Sohn des Nerija. Und Baruch schrieb aus dem Mund Jeremias all die Worte des HERRN, die er zu ihm geredet hatte, auf eine Schriftrolle. (Jes 30,8; Jer 30,2; Jer 32,12; Jer 36,18; Jer 45,1; Röm 16,22; Offb 1,11)

5 Und Jeremia befahl dem Baruch: Ich bin verhindert, ich kann nicht in das Haus des HERRN gehen. 6 So geh du hin und lies am Tag des Fastens aus der Rolle vor, was du aus meinem Mund geschrieben hast, die Worte des HERRN, vor den Ohren des Volkes im Haus des HERRN am Tag des Fastens. Auch sollst du sie vor den Ohren aller Judäer^[1] lesen, die aus ihren Städten kommen. (Jer 7,2) 7 Vielleicht fällt ihr Flehen vor dem HERRN nieder, und sie kehren um, jeder von seinem bösen Weg; denn groß ist der Zorn und der Grimm, den der HERR diesem Volk angesagt hat. (2Kön 22,13; Joe 2,12) 8 Und Baruch, der Sohn des Nerija, tat nach allem, was der Prophet Jeremia ihm befohlen hatte, indem er aus dem Buch die Worte des HERRN im Haus des HERRN vorlas. 9 Und es geschah im fünften Jahr Jojakims, des Sohnes Josias, des Königs von Juda, im neunten Monat, da rief man zu einem Fasten vor dem HERRN das ganze Volk in Jerusalem auf und das ganze Volk, das aus den Städten Judas nach Jerusalem kam. (2Chr 20,3; Jes 58,1; Joe 1,14) 10 Da las Baruch aus dem Buch die Worte Jeremias vor im Haus des HERRN, in der Zelle Gemarjas, des Sohnes Schafans, des Schreibers, im oberen Vorhof, im Eingang des neuen Tores am Haus des HERRN vor den Ohren des ganzen Volkes. Und siehe, dort saßen alle Obersten^[2]: Elischama, der Schreiber, und Delaja, der Sohn Schemajas, und Elnatan, der Sohn Achbors, und Gemarja, der Sohn Schafans, und Zedekia, der Sohn Hananjas, und alle ⟨anderen⟩ Obersten^[3]. 13 Und Michaja berichtete ihnen all die Worte, die er gehört hatte, als Baruch vor den Ohren des Volkes aus dem Buch vorlas. 14 Da sandten alle Obersten^[4] Jehudi, den Sohn Netanjas, des Sohnes Schelemjas, des Sohnes Kuschis, zu Baruch und ließen ⟨ihm⟩ sagen: Die Rolle, aus der du vor den Ohren des Volkes vorgelesen hast, nimm sie in deine Hand und komm! Da nahm Baruch, der Sohn Nerijas, die Rolle in seine Hand und kam zu ihnen. 15 Und sie sagten zu ihm: Setz dich doch und lies sie vor unseren Ohren vor! Da las Baruch vor ihren Ohren vor. 16 Und es geschah, als sie all die Worte gehört hatten, sahen sie einander erschrocken an und sagten zu Baruch: Wir müssen dem König all diese Worte berichten. (2Kön 22,11; Jer 23,9; Jer 36,24) 17 Und sie fragten Baruch: Teile uns doch mit, wie du all diese Worte aus seinem Mund aufgeschrieben hast! 18 Da sprach Baruch zu ihnen: Aus seinem Mund sagte er mir all diese Worte vor, und ich schrieb sie mit Tinte in das Buch. (Jer 36,4) 19 Und die Obersten^[5] sagten zu Baruch: Geh, verbirg dich, du und Jeremia, dass niemand erkennt, wo ihr seid! (Spr 28,12; Jer 26,24) 20 Und sie gingen zum König in den Hof^[6]. Die Rolle aber hatten sie in der Zelle des Schreibers Elischama niedergelegt. Und sie berichteten all die Worte vor den Ohren des Königs. 21 Da sandte der König den Jehudi, die Rolle zu holen. Und er holte sie aus der Zelle des Schreibers Elischama. Und Jehudi las sie vor den Ohren des Königs und vor den Ohren aller Obersten^[7], die um den König standen. (2Kön 22,10) 22 Der König aber saß im Winterhaus – ⟨es war⟩ im neunten Monat –, und das Feuer im Kohlenbecken war^[8] vor ihm angezündet. (Esr 10,9; Am 3,15) 23 Und es geschah, sooft Jehudi drei oder vier Spalten vorgelesen hatte, zerschnitt sie der König^[9] mit dem Schreibermesser und warf sie in das Feuer, das auf dem Kohlenbecken war, bis die ganze Rolle im Feuer auf dem Kohlenbecken vernichtet war. (Ps 50,17) 24 Aber der König und alle seine Knechte, die all diese Worte hörten, erschraken nicht und zerrissen ihre Kleider nicht. (2Mo 7,23; 1Kön 21,27; 2Kön 22,11; Ps 36,2; Jer 36,16)

25 Und obwohl Elnatan, Delaja und Gemarja in den König drangen, dass er die Rolle nicht verbrennen solle, hörte er nicht auf sie. 26 Und der König befahl Jerachmeel, dem Königssohn^[10], und Seraja, dem Sohn des Asriël, und Schelemja, dem Sohn des Abdeel, den Schreiber Baruch und den Propheten Jeremia festzunehmen. 27 Und das Wort des HERRN geschah zu Jeremia, nachdem der König die Rolle und die Worte, die Baruch aus dem Mund Jeremias aufgeschrieben, verbrannt hatte: 28 Nimm dir noch einmal eine Rolle, eine andere, und schreibe darauf all die vorigen Worte, die auf der vorigen Rolle waren, die Jojakim, der König von Juda, verbrannt hat. 29 Und über Jojakim, den König von Juda, sollst du sagen: So spricht der HERR: Du hast diese Rolle verbrannt und gesagt: Warum hast du darauf geschrieben: Der König von Babel wird ganz bestimmt kommen und dieses Land zerstören und aus ihm Menschen und Vieh verschwinden lassen? (Jer 21,7; Jer 32,3) 30 Darum, so spricht der HERR über Jojakim, den König von Juda: Er wird niemanden ⟨als Nachkommen⟩ haben, der auf dem Thron Davids sitzt. Und seine Leiche wird hingeworfen bleiben der Hitze bei Tag und der Kälte bei Nacht. (Pred 6,3; Jer 22,18; Jer 22,30) 31 Und ich will an ihm und an seinen Nachkommen und an seinen Knechten ihre Schuld heimsuchen und will über sie und über die Bewohner von Jerusalem und über die Männer von Juda all das Unglück bringen, das ich über sie geredet habe; aber sie haben nicht gehört. – (Ps 94,23; Jer 19,15; Hes 7,8) 32 Da nahm Jeremia eine andere Rolle und gab sie dem Schreiber Baruch, dem Sohn des Nerija. Und er schrieb darauf aus dem Mund Jeremias alle Worte des Buches, das Jojakim, der König von Juda, im Feuer verbrannt hatte. Und es wurden noch viele Worte wie diese hinzugefügt.

Jehoiakim burns Jeremiah’s scroll

1 A message from the LORD came to Jeremiah. It came in the fourth year that Jehoiakim was king of Judah. He was the son of Josiah. The message said, 2 ‘Get a scroll. Write on it all the words I have spoken to you. Write down what I have said about Israel, Judah and all the other nations. Write what I have said to you from the time of King Josiah until now. 3 The people of Judah will hear about all the trouble I plan to bring on them. Maybe then each of them will turn from their evil ways. If they do, I will forgive their sins and the evil things they have done.’ 4 So Jeremiah sent for Baruch, the son of Neriah. Jeremiah told him to write down all the words the LORD had spoken to him. And Baruch wrote them on the scroll. 5 Then Jeremiah said to him, ‘I’m not allowed to go to the LORD’s temple. 6 So you go there. Go on a day when the people are fasting. Read to them from the scroll. Read the words of the LORD you wrote down as I gave them to you. Read them to all the people of Judah who come in from their towns. 7 They will hear what the LORD will do to them when his burning anger blazes out against them. Then perhaps they will pray to him. And maybe each of them will turn from their evil ways.’ 8 Baruch, the son of Neriah, did everything Jeremiah the prophet told him to do. He went to the LORD’s temple. There he read the words of the LORD from the scroll. 9 It was in the fifth year that Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, was king of Judah. It was the ninth month of that year. A time of fasting at the LORD’s temple had been ordered. All the people in Jerusalem were told to take part in it. So were those who had come in from the towns of Judah. 10 Baruch read to all the people who were at the LORD’s temple. He read Jeremiah’s words from the scroll. He was in the room of Gemariah the secretary. It was located in the upper courtyard at the entrance of the New Gate of the temple. Gemariah was the son of Shaphan. 11 Micaiah was the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan. Micaiah heard Baruch reading all the LORD’s words that were written on the scroll. 12 Then he went down to the secretary’s room in the royal palace. All the officials were sitting there. They included the secretary Elishama and Delaiah, the son of Shemaiah. Elnathan, the son of Akbor, was also there. So was Gemariah, the son of Shaphan. Zedekiah, the son of Hananiah, was there too. And so were all the other officials. 13 Micaiah told all of them what he had heard. He told them everything Baruch had read to the people from the scroll. 14 All the officials sent Jehudi to speak to Baruch, the son of Neriah. Jehudi was the son of Nethaniah. Nethaniah was the son of Shelemiah. Shelemiah was the son of Cushi. Jehudi said to Baruch, ‘Come. Bring the scroll you have read to the people.’ So Baruch went to them. He carried the scroll with him. 15 The officials said to him, ‘Please sit down. Read the scroll to us.’ So Baruch read it to them. 16 They heard all its words. Then they looked at one another in fear. They said to Baruch, ‘We must report all these words to the king.’ 17 They said to Baruch, ‘Tell us. How did you happen to write all these things? Did Jeremiah tell you to do this?’ 18 ‘Yes’, Baruch replied. ‘He told me to write down all these words. So I wrote them in ink on the scroll.’ 19 Then the officials spoke to Baruch. They said, ‘You and Jeremiah must go and hide. Don’t let anyone know where you are.’ 20 The officials put the scroll in the room of Elishama the secretary. Then they went to the king in the courtyard. They reported everything to him. 21 The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll. Jehudi brought it from the room of Elishama the secretary. Jehudi read it to the king. All the officials were standing beside the king. So they heard it too. 22 It was the ninth month. The king was sitting in his winter apartment. A fire was burning in the brazier in front of him. 23 Jehudi read three or four sections from the scroll. Then the king cut them off with a secretary’s knife. He threw them into the brazier. He did that until the entire scroll was burned in the fire. 24 The king and some of his attendants heard all these words. But they weren’t afraid. They didn’t tear their clothes. 25 Elnathan, Delaiah and Gemariah begged the king not to burn the scroll. But he wouldn’t listen to them. 26 Instead, the king commanded three men to arrest Baruch the secretary and Jeremiah the prophet. But the LORD had hidden them. The three men were Jerahmeel, Seraiah and Shelemiah. Jerahmeel was a member of the royal court. Seraiah was the son of Azriel. And Shelemiah was the son of Abdeel. 27 A message from the LORD came to Jeremiah. It came after the king burned the scroll. On the scroll were the words Baruch had written down. Jeremiah had told him to write them. The message said, 28 ‘Get another scroll. Write on it all the words that were on the first one. King Jehoiakim burned that one. 29 Also tell King Jehoiakim, “The LORD says, ‘You burned that scroll. You said to Baruch, “Why did you write that the king of Babylon would certainly come? Why did you write that he would destroy this land? And why did you write that he would remove from it people and animals alike?” ’ 30 So now the LORD has something to say about Jehoiakim, the king of Judah. He says, ‘No one from Jehoiakim’s family line will sit on David’s throne. Jehoiakim’s body will be thrown out. It will lie outside in the heat by day and in the frost at night. 31 I will punish him and his children and his attendants. I will punish them for their sinful ways. I will bring on them all the trouble I said I would. And I will bring it on the people of Jerusalem and Judah. They have not listened to me.’ ” ’ 32 So Jeremiah got another scroll. He gave it to Baruch the secretary. He was the son of Neriah. Jeremiah told Baruch what to write on it. Baruch wrote down all the words that were on the scroll King Jehoiakim had burned in the fire. And many more words were written on it. They were similar to those that had already been written.
