1Und Bileam sagte zu Balak: Baue mir hier sieben Altäre, und stelle mir hier sieben Stiere bereit und sieben Widder! (Hi 42,8)2Und Balak tat es, wie Bileam gesagt hatte; und Balak und Bileam opferten einen Stier und einen Widder auf jedem Altar. Ich aber will hingehen; vielleicht wird der HERR mir entgegenkommen, und was er mich sehen lassen wird, das werde ich dir berichten. Und er ging hin auf eine kahle Höhe. (4Mo 22,8; 4Mo 23,12)4Und Gott kam dem Bileam entgegen; und der sagte zu ihm: Die sieben Altäre habe ich hergerichtet und auf jedem Altar einen Stier und einen Widder geopfert.5Und der HERR legte ein Wort in den Mund Bileams und sprach: Kehre zu Balak zurück, und so sollst du reden! (5Mo 18,18)6Und er kehrte zu ihm zurück; und siehe, er stand neben seinem Brandopfer, er und alle Obersten von Moab.7Da begann er seinen Spruch und sprach: Aus Aram hat Balak mich hergeführt, von den Bergen des Ostens der König von Moab: Komm, verfluche mir Jakob! Ja, komm und verwünsche Israel! (4Mo 22,5; Ps 49,5)8Wie soll ich verfluchen, wen Gott nicht verflucht, und wie verwünschen, wen der HERR nicht verwünscht hat? (Spr 26,2)9Denn vom Gipfel der Felsen sehe ich es, und von den Höhen herab schaue ich es; siehe, ein Volk, das abgesondert wohnt und sich nicht zu den Nationen rechnet. (2Mo 33,16; 5Mo 33,28; Est 3,8; Mi 7,14)10Wer könnte zählen den Staub Jakobs, und der Zahl nach, den vierten Teil Israels[1]? Meine Seele sterbe den Tod der Aufrichtigen, und mein Ende sei gleich dem ihren! (1Mo 13,16; 4Mo 31,8)11Da sagte Balak zu Bileam: Was hast du mir da angetan! Meine Feinde zu verfluchen, habe ich dich holen lassen, und siehe, du hast sie sogar noch gesegnet! (4Mo 24,10)12Und er antwortete und sagte: Muss ich nicht darauf achten, das zu reden, was der HERR in meinen Mund legt? (4Mo 23,3)13Und Balak sagte zu ihm: Komm doch mit mir an eine andere Stelle, von wo aus du es sehen kannst! Nur den äußersten ⟨Teil⟩ von ihm wirst du sehen, und du wirst es nicht ganz sehen. Und verfluche es mir von dort aus! (4Mo 22,6; 4Mo 22,41)14Und er nahm ihn mit zu dem Feld der Späher, auf den Gipfel des Pisga; und er baute sieben Altäre und opferte einen Stier und einen Widder auf jedem Altar. (4Mo 21,20; 5Mo 34,1)15Und er sagte zu Balak: Stelle dich hier neben dein Brandopfer, und ich, ich will dort ⟨dem HERRN⟩ begegnen.16Und der HERR kam dem Bileam entgegen und legte ein Wort in seinen Mund und sprach: Kehre zu Balak zurück, und so sollst du reden! (5Mo 18,18)17Und er kam zu ihm, und siehe, er stand neben seinem Brandopfer und die Obersten von Moab bei ihm. Und Balak sagte zu ihm: Was hat der HERR geredet? (4Mo 6,27; 1Chr 17,27)21Er erblickt kein Unrecht[3] in Jakob und sieht kein Verderben in Israel; der HERR, sein Gott, ist mit ihm, und Königsjubel ist in ihm. (3Mo 9,24; 4Mo 16,3; 1Sam 25,28; Ps 99,2; Ps 135,21; Jes 12,6; Jes 33,21; Hes 48,35; Joe 2,27; Röm 4,7)22Gott ist es, der es[4] aus Ägypten geführt. Es hat ⟨Kraft⟩ wie die Hörner des Büffels. (2Mo 12,51; 4Mo 24,8; 5Mo 33,17; Hi 39,10; Mt 2,15)23Denn es gibt keine Zauberei gegen Jakob und keine Wahrsagerei gegen Israel[5]. Jetzt wird zu Jakob und zu Israel gesagt: Was hat Gott gewirkt![6] (5Mo 3,24; Jes 44,25)24Siehe, ein Volk; wie eine Löwin steht es auf, und wie ein Löwe erhebt es sich. Es legt sich nicht nieder, bis es die Beute verzehrt und das Blut der Erschlagenen getrunken hat! (4Mo 24,9)25Da sagte Balak zu Bileam: Willst du es schon nicht verfluchen, dann sollst du es auch nicht segnen.[7]26Und Bileam antwortete und sagte zu Balak: Habe ich nicht zu dir geredet und gesagt: Alles, was der HERR reden wird, das werde ich tun? (4Mo 23,3)27Und Balak sagte zu Bileam: Komm doch, ich will dich an eine andere Stelle mitnehmen! Vielleicht wird es in den Augen Gottes recht sein, dass du es mir von dort aus verfluchst. (4Mo 22,6)28Und Balak nahm den Bileam mit auf den Gipfel des Peor, der hinunterblickt über die Fläche der Wildnis[8]. (4Mo 21,20)29Und Bileam sagte zu Balak: Baue mir hier sieben Altäre, und stelle mir hier sieben Stiere und sieben Widder bereit! 1Balaam said to Balak, ‘Build me seven altars here. Prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me to sacrifice.’2Balak did just as Balaam said. The two of them offered a bull and a ram on each altar.3Then Balaam said to Balak, ‘Stay here beside your offering. I’ll go and try to find out what the LORD wants me to do. Maybe he’ll come and meet with me. Then I’ll tell you what he says to me.’ So Balaam went off to a bare hilltop.4God met with him there. Balaam said, ‘I’ve prepared seven altars. On each altar I’ve offered a bull and a ram.’5The LORD put a message in Balaam’s mouth. The LORD said, ‘Go back to Balak. Give him my message.’6So Balaam went back to him. He found Balak standing beside his offering. All the Moabite officials were with him.7Then Balaam spoke the message he had received from God. He said, ‘Balak brought me from the land of Aram. The king of Moab sent for me from the mountains in the east. “Come”, he said. “Put a curse on Jacob’s people for me. Come. Speak against Israel.”8But how can I put a curse on people God hasn’t cursed? How can I speak against people the LORD hasn’t spoken against?9I see them from the rocky peaks. I view them from the hills. I see a group of people who live by themselves. They don’t consider themselves to be one of the nations.10Jacob’s people are like the dust of the earth. Can dust be counted? Who can count even a quarter of the Israelites? Let me die as godly people die. Let my death be like theirs!’11Balak said to Balaam, ‘What have you done to me? I brought you here to put a curse on my enemies! But all you have done is give them a blessing!’12He answered, ‘I have to speak only the words the LORD puts in my mouth.’
Balaam’s second message from God
13Then Balak said to Balaam, ‘Come with me to another place. You can see the Israelites from there. You won’t see all of them. You will only see the outer edges of their camp. From there, put a curse on them for me.’14So Balak took Balaam to the field of Zophim. It was on the highest slopes of Pisgah. There Balak built seven altars. He offered a bull and a ram on each altar.15Balaam said to Balak, ‘Stay here beside your offering. I’ll meet with the LORD over there.’16The LORD met with Balaam. He put a message in Balaam’s mouth. The LORD said, ‘Go back to Balak. Give him my message.’17So Balaam went to Balak. He found him standing beside his offering. The Moabite officials were with him. Balak asked him, ‘What did the LORD say?’18Then Balaam spoke the message he had received from God. He said, ‘Balak, rise up and listen. Son of Zippor, hear me.19God isn’t a mere human. He can’t lie. He isn’t a human being. He doesn’t change his mind. He speaks, and then he acts. He makes a promise, and then he keeps it.20He has commanded me to bless Israel. He has given them his blessing. And I can’t change it.21‘I don’t see any trouble coming on the people of Jacob. I don’t see any suffering in Israel. The LORD their God is with them. The shout of the King is among them.22God brought them out of Egypt. They are as strong as a wild ox.23There isn’t any magic that can hurt the people of Jacob. No one can use magic words to harm Israel. Here is what will be said about the people of Jacob. Here is what will be said about Israel. People will say, “See what God has done!”24The Israelites are going to wake up like a female lion. They are going to get up like a male lion. They are like a lion that won’t rest until it eats what it has caught. They are like a lion that won’t rest until it drinks the blood of what it has killed.’25Then Balak said to Balaam, ‘Don’t put a curse on them at all! And don’t give them a blessing at all!’26Balaam answered, ‘Didn’t I tell you that I must do only what the LORD says?’
Balaam’s third message from God
27Then Balak said to Balaam, ‘Come. Let me take you to another place. Perhaps God will be pleased to let you put a curse on the Israelites for me from there.’28Balak took Balaam to the top of Mount Peor. It looks out over a dry and empty land.29Balaam said, ‘Build me seven altars here. Prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me to sacrifice.’30Balak did just as Balaam said. He offered a bull and a ram on each altar.
