1Und die Männer von Ephraim wurden zusammengerufen und zogen hinüber nach Norden. Und sie sagten zu Jeftah: Warum bist du hinübergezogen, um gegen die Söhne Ammon zu kämpfen, und hast uns nicht gerufen, mit dir zu gehen? Wir werden dein Haus über dir mit Feuer verbrennen! (Ri 8,1; Ri 14,15; Ri 15,6)2Da sagte Jeftah zu ihnen: Ich habe einen heftigen Streit ausgefochten[1], ich und mein Volk, mit den Söhnen Ammon. Ich habe euch zu Hilfe gerufen, aber ihr habt mich nicht aus ihrer Hand gerettet.3Und als ich sah, dass du als Retter nicht da warst, legte ich mein Leben in meine ⟨eigene⟩ Hand und zog hin gegen die Söhne Ammon. Und der HERR gab sie in meine Hand. Was seid ihr denn an diesem Tag gegen mich heraufgezogen, um gegen mich zu kämpfen? (Ri 9,17; 1Sam 19,5)4Und Jeftah versammelte alle Männer von Gilead und kämpfte mit Ephraim. Und die Männer von Gilead schlugen Ephraim; denn die hatten gesagt: Flüchtlinge von Ephraim seid ihr! Gilead ⟨liegt doch⟩ mitten in Ephraim, mitten in Manasse!5Und Gilead nahm Ephraim die Furten des Jordan[2]. Und es geschah, wenn ephraimitische Flüchtlinge sagten: Lass mich hinübergehen!, dann sagten die Männer von Gilead zu ihm: Bist du ein Ephraimiter[3]? Und sagte er: Nein!, (Ri 3,28; Ri 17,7; 1Sam 1,1; 1Kön 11,26)6so sprachen sie zu ihm: Sag mal: Schibbolet[4]! Und sagte er: Sibbolet!, und brachte es nicht fertig, richtig zu sprechen, dann packten sie ihn und schlachteten ihn an den Furten des Jordan. So fielen in jener Zeit von Ephraim 42 000 ⟨Mann⟩. (Mt 26,73)7Und Jeftah richtete Israel sechs Jahre. Und Jeftah, der Gileaditer, starb und wurde in einer der Städte Gileads[5] begraben.
Die Richter Ibzan, Elon und Abdon
8Und nach ihm richtete Israel Ibzan von Bethlehem. (Jos 19,15; Ri 17,7; Ri 19,1)9Und er hatte dreißig Söhne. Dreißig Töchter entließ er nach auswärts, und dreißig Töchter holte er von auswärts für seine Söhne herein. Und er richtete Israel sieben Jahre. (Ps 127,3)10Und Ibzan starb und wurde in Bethlehem begraben.11Und nach ihm richtete Israel Elon, der Sebuloniter. Er richtete Israel zehn Jahre.12Und Elon, der Sebuloniter, starb und wurde in Ajalon im Land Sebulon begraben.13Und nach ihm richtete Israel Abdon, der Sohn Hillels, der Piratoniter. (2Sam 23,30)14Und er hatte vierzig Söhne und dreißig Enkel, die auf siebzig Eseln ritten. Und er richtete Israel acht Jahre. (Ri 5,10)15Und Abdon, der Sohn Hillels, der Piratoniter, starb und wurde in Piraton begraben, im Land Ephraim, auf dem Amalekiterberg. (Ri 5,14)
1The men of Ephraim were called to arms, and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, “Why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire.” (Ri 8,1)2And Jephthah said to them, “I and my people had a great dispute with the Ammonites, and when I called you, you did not save me from their hand.3And when I saw that you would not save me, I took my life in my hand and crossed over against the Ammonites, and the LORD gave them into my hand. And the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, because they said, “You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh.” (1Sam 25,10)5And the Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, “Let me go over,” the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” When he said, “No,” (Ri 3,28)6they said to him, “Then say Shibboleth,” and he said, “Sibboleth,” for he could not pronounce it right. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time 42,000 of the Ephraimites fell. (Ri 5,1)7Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in his city in Gilead.[1]
Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon
8After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.9He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters he gave in marriage outside his clan, and thirty daughters he brought in from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.10Then Ibzan died and was buried at Bethlehem.11After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years.12Then Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.13After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.14He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys, and he judged Israel eight years. (Ri 5,10; Hi 18,19; Jes 14,22; 1Tim 5,4)15Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.
