Psalm 50

1 A Psalm of Asaph. The Mighty One, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. (Jos 22,22; 1Chr 6,39; 1Chr 15,17; 1Chr 16,5; 1Chr 16,7; 1Chr 25,2; 2Chr 29,30; Ps 113,3)2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth. (5Mo 33,2; Ps 48,2; Ps 80,1; Ps 94,1; Kla 2,15)3 Our God comes; he does not keep silence;[1] before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty tempest. (2Mo 19,16; 3Mo 10,2; 4Mo 16,35; Ps 21,9; Ps 97,3; Dan 7,10)4 He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people: (5Mo 4,26; 5Mo 31,28; 5Mo 32,1; Jes 1,2; Mi 6,1)5 “Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!” (1Mo 15,9; 2Mo 24,7)6 The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge! (Ps 58,11; Ps 75,7; Ps 89,5; Ps 97,6; Offb 16,5; Offb 16,7; Offb 19,2)7 “Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, I will testify against you. I am God, your God. (2Mo 20,2; Ps 49,1; Ps 81,8)8 Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you; your burnt offerings are continually before me. (Ps 40,6)9 I will not accept a bull from your house or goats from your folds.10 For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills.11 I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. (Mt 10,29)12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine. (Ps 24,1)13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?14 Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,[2] and perform your vows to the Most High, (4Mo 30,2; 5Mo 23,21; Hi 22,27; Ps 22,25; Ps 27,6; Ps 50,23; Ps 61,8; Ps 65,1; Ps 69,30; Ps 76,11; Ps 107,22; Ps 116,14; Ps 116,18; Pred 5,4; Hos 14,2; Röm 12,1; Hebr 13,15)15 and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” (Ps 22,23; Ps 50,23; Ps 81,7; Ps 91,15; Ps 107,6; Sach 13,9)16 But to the wicked God says: “What right have you to recite my statutes or take my covenant on your lips?17 For you hate discipline, and you cast my words behind you. (1Kön 14,9; Neh 9,26; Röm 2,21)18 If you see a thief, you are pleased with him, and you keep company with adulterers. (Röm 1,32; 1Tim 5,22)19 “You give your mouth free rein for evil, and your tongue frames deceit. (Ps 52,2)20 You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother’s son.21 These things you have done, and I have been silent; you thought that I[3] was one like yourself. But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you. (2Kön 19,4; Hi 13,18; Hi 23,4; Ps 90,8; Pred 8,11; Jes 57,11)22 “Mark this, then, you who forget God, lest I tear you apart, and there be none to deliver! (Ps 7,2; Ps 9,17)23 The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!” (Ps 50,14; Ps 91,16; Gal 6,16)

1 The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to where it sets.2 From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.3 Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages.4 He summons the heavens above, and the earth, that he may judge his people:5 ‘Gather to me this consecrated people, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.’6 And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for he is a God of justice.[1]7 ‘Listen, my people, and I will speak; I will testify against you, Israel: I am God, your God.8 I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before me.9 I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens,10 for every animal of the forest is mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills.11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine.12 If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is mine, and all that is in it.13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?14 ‘Sacrifice thank-offerings to God, fulfil your vows to the Most High,15 and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honour me.’16 But to the wicked person, God says: ‘What right have you to recite my laws or take my covenant on your lips?17 You hate my instruction and cast my words behind you.18 When you see a thief, you join with him; you throw in your lot with adulterers.19 You use your mouth for evil and harness your tongue to deceit.20 You sit and testify against your brother and slander your own mother’s son.21 When you did these things and I kept silent, you thought I was exactly[3] like you. But I now arraign you and set my accusations before you.22 ‘Consider this, you who forget God, or I will tear you to pieces, with no-one to rescue you:23 those who sacrifice thank-offerings honour me, and to the blameless[4] I will show my salvation.’

1 The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks. He calls out to the earth from the sunrise in the east to the sunset in the west.2 From Zion, perfect and beautiful, God’s glory shines out.3 Our God comes, and he won’t be silent. A burning fire goes ahead of him. A terrible storm is all around him.4 He calls out to heaven and earth to be his witnesses. Then he judges his people.5 He says, ‘Gather this holy people around me. They made a covenant with me by offering a sacrifice.’6 The heavens announce that what God decides is right. That’s because he is a God of justice.7 God says, ‘Listen, my people, and I will speak. I will be a witness against you, Israel. I am God, your God.8 I don’t bring charges against you because of your sacrifices. I don’t bring charges because of the burnt offerings you always bring me.9 I don’t need a bull from your barn. I don’t need goats from your pens.10 Every animal in the forest already belongs to me. And so do the cattle on a thousand hills.11 I own every bird in the mountains. The insects in the fields belong to me.12 If I were hungry, I wouldn’t tell you. The world belongs to me. And so does everything in it.13 Do I eat the meat of bulls? Do I drink the blood of goats?14 Bring me thank-offerings, because I am your God. Carry out the promises you made to me, because I am the Most High God.15 Call out to me when trouble comes. I will save you. And you will honour me.’16 But here is what God says to a sinful person. ‘What right do you have to speak the words of my laws? How dare you speak the words of my covenant!17 You hate my teaching. You turn your back on what I say.18 When you see a thief, you join him. You make friends with those who commit adultery.19 You use your mouth to speak evil. You use your tongue to spread lies.20 You are a witness against your brother. You always tell lies about your own mother’s son.21 When you did these things, I kept silent. So you thought I was just like you. But now I’m going to bring you to court. I will bring charges against you.22 ‘You who forget God, think about this. If you don’t, I will tear you to pieces. No one will be able to save you.23 People who sacrifice thank-offerings to me honour me. To those who are without blame I will show my power to save.’

Psalm 50

King James Version

1 A Psalm of Asaph. The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined.3 Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him.4 He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people.5 Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.6 And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.7 Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God.8 I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me.9 I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.10 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.11 I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.12 If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.13 Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?14 Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.16 But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth?17 Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.18 When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers.19 Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit.20 Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother' son.21 These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.22 Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.23 Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.
