— Abímelekovo kralování - Abímelek pobíjí Gedeónovce, ujímá se vlády v Šekemu, padá rukou ženy.

1 Abímelek, syn Jerubaalův, odešel do Šekemu, k bratrům své matky a promluvil k nim i k celé čeledi rodu své matky takto: 2 „Předneste všem šekemským občanům: Co je pro vás lepší, aby nad vámi vládlo sedmdesát mužů, samí Jerubaalovci, anebo aby nad vámi vládl jediný muž? Pamatujte, že jsem vaše krev a vaše tělo.“ 3 Bratři jeho matky přednesli o něm toto všechno všem šekemským občanům a ti se k Abímelekovi přiklonili, neboť si řekli: „Je to náš bratr.“ 4 Potom mu vydali sedmdesát šekelů stříbra z chrámu Baala smlouvy; za ně si Abímelek najal lehkomyslné a bezohledné muže, aby ho provázeli. 5 Vešel do otcovského domu v Ofře a povraždil na jednom kameni své bratry Jerubaalovce, sedmdesát mužů. Zbyl jen Jótam, nejmladší syn Jerubaalův, protože se ukryl. 6 Všichni šekemští občané a všichni z domu Miló se shromáždili a prohlásili Abímeleka za krále při božišti u sloupu, který byl v Šekemu. 7 Když to oznámili Jótamovi, šel a postavil se na vrcholu hory Gerizímu, hlasitě volal a mluvil k nim: „Slyšte mě, šekemští občané, a vás nechť slyší Bůh! 8 Sešly se pospolu stromy, aby si nad sebou pomazaly krále. Vyzvaly olivu: ‚Kraluj nad námi!‘ 9 Oliva jim však odpověděla: ‚Mám se vzdát své tučnosti, jíž se uctívají bohové i lidé, a kymácet se nad stromy?‘ 10 Stromy pak vyzvaly fík: ‚Pojď nad námi kralovat ty!‘ 11 Fík jim však odpověděl: ‚Mám se vzdát své sladkosti a svých výborných plodů a kymácet se nad stromy?‘ 12 Stromy pak vyzvaly vinnou révu: ‚Pojď nad námi kralovat ty!‘ 13 Vinná réva jim však odpověděla: ‚Mám se vzdát svého moštu, který je k radosti bohům i lidem, a kymácet se nad stromy?‘ 14 I vyzvaly všechny stromy trnitý keř: ‚Pojď nad námi kralovat ty!‘ 15 A trnitý keř stromům odpověděl: ‚Jestliže mě doopravdy chcete pomazat za krále nad sebou, pojďte se schoulit do mého stínu! Jestliže však ne, vyšlehne z trnitého keře oheň a pozře i libanónské cedry!‚ 16 Nuže: Jednali jste věrně a bezelstně, když jste si ustanovili za krále Abímeleka? Jednali jste dobře s Jerubaalem a s jeho domem? Jednali jste s ním podle toho, jak si zasloužil? 17 Můj otec přece za vás bojoval s nasazením vlastního života a vytrhl vás z rukou Midjánců. 18 Vy však jste dnes proti domu mého otce povstali, povraždili jste jeho syny, sedmdesát mužů, na jednom kameni, a ustanovili jste Abímeleka, syna jeho otrokyně, za krále šekemských občanů jen proto, že to je váš bratr. 19 Jestliže jste tohoto dne jednali s Jerubaalem a s jeho domem věrně a bezelstně, radujte se z Abímeleka a také on ať se raduje z vás. 20 Jestliže však nikoli, ať vyšlehne z Abímeleka oheň a pozře šekemské občany i dům Miló, pak ať vyšlehne oheň z šekemských občanů a z domu Miló a pozře Abímeleka.“ 21 Poté se dal Jótam na útěk a uprchl před svým bratrem Abímelekem do Beéru, kde se usadil. 22 Abímelek panoval nad Izraelem tři roky. 23 Bůh poslal mezi Abímeleka a šekemské občany zlého ducha a šekemští občané se vůči Abímelekovi zachovali věrolomně. 24 Tak násilí spáchané na sedmdesáti Jerubaalovcích a jejich prolitá krev dopadly na Abímeleka, jejich bratra, který je povraždil, i na šekemské občany za to, že ho podporovali, když vraždil své bratry. 25 Šekemští občané postavili proti němu zálohy na vrcholcích hor a oloupili každého, kdo se ubíral cestou mimo ně. Bylo to hlášeno Abímelekovi. 26 Tenkrát přišel Gaal, syn Ebedův, se svými bratry a dorazili do Šekemu. Šekemští občané k němu pojali důvěru. 27 Vyšli na pole a sbírali na svých vinicích hrozny, lisovali je a uspořádali slavnost vinobraní, pak vešli do domu svého boha, hodovali, pili a zlořečili Abímelekovi. 28 Přitom mluvil Gaal, syn Ebedův: „Kdo je Abímelek ve srovnání s Šekemem, že mu máme sloužit? Což to není syn Jerubaalův? A není u něho dozorcem Zebúl? Služte raději mužům Chamóra, otce Šekemova. Proč bychom my měli sloužit jemu? 29 Kdybych měl v rukou tento lid, Abímeleka bych odstranil.“ Vyzval Abímeleka: „Rozmnož své oddíly a vytáhni!“ 30 Jak uslyšel Zebúl, velitel města, řeč Gaala, syna Ebedova, vzplanul hněvem 31 a tajně poslal k Abímelekovi posly se vzkazem: „Hle, do Šekemu přišel Gaal, syn Ebedův, se svými bratry a pobuřují proti tobě město. 32 Povstaň teď v noci spolu s lidem, který je s tebou, a ukryj se v poli do zálohy. 33 Za časného jitra při východu slunce přitrhneš k městu. On i jeho lid vyjdou k tobě a ty mu uděláš, co se tvé ruce naskytne.“ 34 Abímelek v noci povstal, i všechen lid, který byl s ním, a rozestavili proti Šekemu do čtyř oddílů zálohy. 35 Gaal, syn Ebedův, vyšel a stoupl si do vrat městské brány, právě když Abímelek se svým lidem povstal ze zálohy. 36 Když Gaal uviděl ten lid, řekl Zebúlovi: „Hle, z hřebenů hor sestupuje nějaký lid!“ Zebúl mu odpověděl: „Vidíš stín hor a připadá ti jako mužové.“ 37 Ale Gaal mluvil dál: „Hle, nějaký lid sestupuje z Pupku země a jeden oddíl přichází cestou od božiště mrakopravců.“ 38 Tu mu řekl Zebúl: „Kdepak jsou teď tvé řeči? Vždyť jsi říkal: ‚Kdo je Abímelek, že bychom mu měli sloužit?‘ Ano, je to ten lid, který jsi tak podceňoval. Jen vytrhni a bojuj proti němu!“ 39 Gaal tedy vyšel v čele šekemských občanů, aby bojoval proti Abímelekovi, 40 ale Abímelek ho zahnal na útěk, a mnoho skolených zůstalo ležet až po vrata brány. 41 Abímelek se usadil v Arumě a Zebúl vypudil Gaala a jeho bratry ze Šekemu. 42 Druhého dne vyšel lid na pole. Hlásili to Abímelekovi. 43 Ten rozdělil lid do tří oddílů a ukryl se do zálohy v poli. Když uviděl, že lid vychází z města, zvedl se proti nim, aby je pobil. 44 Abímelek a oddíly, které byly s ním, přitrhli a postavili se do vrat městské brány, kdežto na všechny, kdo byli na poli, přitrhly dva zbývající oddíly a pobily je. 45 Po celý den bojoval Abímelek proti městu. Město dobyl a povraždil lid, který byl v něm, potom je rozbořil a posypal solí. 46 Jak to uslyšeli všichni občané šekemské věže, vešli do sklepení domu boha smlouvy. 47 Abímelekovi bylo hlášeno, že se tam shromáždili všichni občané šekemské věže. 48 I vystoupil Abímelek se vším svým lidem na horu Salmón, uchopil sekeru, usekl ze stromu větev, zvedl ji a dal si ji na rameno. Lidu, který byl s ním, poručil: „Co jste viděli, že jsem udělal, udělejte rychle jako já!“ 49 Všechen lid, každý z nich, usekli větev a šli za Abímelekem. Nakladli je na sklepení a zapálili je nad nimi. Tak zemřeli všichni muži šekemské věže, na tisíc mužů a žen. 50 Potom táhl Abímelek do Tebesu, oblehl jej a dobyl. 51 Uprostřed města byla pevná věž, kam utekli všichni mužové a ženy i všichni občané města. Zavřeli za sebou a vystoupili na střechu věže. 52 Abímelek přišel až k věži a bojoval proti ní. Přiblížil se ke vchodu do věže, aby založil požár. 53 Vtom hodila nějaká žena Abímelekovi na hlavu mlýnský kámen a prorazila mu lebku. 54 Rychle zavolal svého zbrojnoše a poručil mu: „Vytas meč a usmrť mě, ať o mně neříkají: ‚Zabila ho žena!‘“ Mládenec jej tedy probodl a on zemřel. 55 Když izraelští muži uviděli, že Abímelek zemřel, vrátil se každý do svého domova. 56 Tak odplatil Bůh Abímelekovi za zločin, jehož se dopustil proti svému otci, když povraždil svých sedmdesát bratrů. 57 Též všechny zločiny šekemských mužů obrátil Bůh na jejich hlavu. Postihlo je zlořečení Jótama, syna Jerubaalova.

Abimelech’s Conspiracy

1 Now Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother’s relatives and said to them and to the whole clan of his mother’s family, (Sd 8,31) 2 “Say in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that all seventy of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember also that I am your bone and your flesh.” (Gn 29,14; Sd 8,30; Sd 9,1) 3 And his mother’s relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they said, “He is our brother.” (Sd 9,18) 4 And they gave him seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith with which Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him. 5 And he went to his father’s house at Ophrah and killed his brothers the sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself. (Sd 6,24; 2Kr 11,1) 6 And all the leaders of Shechem came together, and all Beth-millo, and they went and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem. 16 “Now therefore, if you acted in good faith and integrity when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house and have done to him as his deeds deserved— (Sd 6,32; Sd 8,35; Př 12,14; Iz 3,11)

The Downfall of Abimelech

22 Abimelech ruled over Israel three years. 23 And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, (1S 16,14; 1S 18,10; 1S 19,9; Iz 33,1)

24 that the violence done to the seventy sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid on Abimelech their brother, who killed them, and on the men of Shechem, who strengthened his hands to kill his brothers. (Sd 9,56; 1Kr 2,32; Est 9,25; Ž 7,16; Mt 23,35)

25 And the leaders of Shechem put men in ambush against him on the mountaintops, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way. And it was told to Abimelech. 26 And Gaal the son of Ebed moved into Shechem with his relatives, and the leaders of Shechem put confidence in him. 27 And they went out into the field and gathered the grapes from their vineyards and trod them and held a festival; and they went into the house of their god and ate and drank and reviled Abimelech. (Sd 9,4; Sd 9,46) 28 And Gaal the son of Ebed said, “Who is Abimelech, and who are we of Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? I would say^[1] to Abimelech, ‘Increase your army, and come out.’” 30 When Zebul the ruler of the city heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was kindled. 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly,^[2] saying, “Behold, Gaal the son of Ebed and his relatives have come to Shechem, and they are stirring up^[3] the city against you. 32 Now therefore, go by night, you and the people who are with you, and set an ambush in the field. 33 Then in the morning, as soon as the sun is up, rise early and rush upon the city. And when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you may do to them as your hand finds to do.” (Kaz 9,10) 34 So Abimelech and all the men who were with him rose up by night and set an ambush against Shechem in four companies. 35 And Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance of the gate of the city, and Abimelech and the people who were with him rose from the ambush. 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, “Look, people are coming down from the mountaintops!” And Zebul said to him, “You mistake^[4] the shadow of the mountains for men.” (Sd 9,7; Sd 9,25) 37 Gaal spoke again and said, “Look, people are coming down from the center of the land, and one company is coming from the direction of the Diviners’ Oak.” 38 Then Zebul said to him, “Where is your mouth now, you who said, ‘Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?’ Are not these the people whom you despised? Go out now and fight with them.” (Sd 9,28) 39 And Gaal went out at the head of the leaders of Shechem and fought with Abimelech. 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled before him. And many fell wounded, up to the entrance of the gate. 41 And Abimelech lived at Arumah, and Zebul drove out Gaal and his relatives, so that they could not dwell at Shechem. 42 On the following day, the people went out into the field, and Abimelech was told. 43 He took his people and divided them into three companies and set an ambush in the fields. And he looked and saw the people coming out of the city. So he rose against them and killed them. 44 Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city, while the two companies rushed upon all who were in the field and killed them. (Sd 20,37) 45 And Abimelech fought against the city all that day. He captured the city and killed the people who were in it, and he razed the city and sowed it with salt. (Dt 29,23; 2Kr 3,25) 46 When all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem heard of it, they entered the stronghold of the house of El-berith. (Sd 8,33; Sd 9,4; Sd 9,49) 47 Abimelech was told that all the leaders of the Tower of Shechem were gathered together. 48 And Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an axe in his hand and cut down a bundle of brushwood and took it up and laid it on his shoulder. And he said to the men who were with him, “What you have seen me do, hurry and do as I have done.” (Ž 68,14) 49 So every one of the people cut down his bundle and following Abimelech put it against the stronghold, and they set the stronghold on fire over them, so that all the people of the Tower of Shechem also died, about 1,000 men and women. (Sd 9,46) 50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez and captured it. 51 But there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women and all the leaders of the city fled to it and shut themselves in, and they went up to the roof of the tower. 52 And Abimelech came to the tower and fought against it and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it with fire. 53 And a certain woman threw an upper millstone on Abimelech’s head and crushed his skull. (2S 11,21) 54 Then he called quickly to the young man his armor-bearer and said to him, “Draw your sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” And his young man thrust him through, and he died. (1S 31,4) 55 And when the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, everyone departed to his home. 56 Thus God returned the evil of Abimelech, which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers.
