— Soudcové Tóla a Jaír - Vysvoboditelé z kmene Isachar a Gileád obhajují Izraele po dobu čtyřiceti pěti let.

1 Po Abímelekovi povstal k vysvobozování Izraele Tóla, syn Púy, syna Dódova, muž z pokolení Isacharova. Sídlil v Šamíru v Efrajimském pohoří. 2 Soudil Izraele třiadvacet let. Když zemřel, byl pochován v Šamíru. 3 Po něm povstal Jaír Gileádský. Soudil Izraele dvaadvacet let. 4 Měl třicet synů, kteří jezdili na třiceti oslátkách a měli třicet měst; podle nich se nazývají Jaírovy vesnice až podnes; jsou v gileádské zemi. 5 Když Jaír zemřel, byl pochován v Kamónu.

6 Izraelci se dále dopouštěli toho, co je zlé v Hospodinových očích. Sloužili baalům a aštoretám i bohům aramejským a bohům sidónským, též bohům moábským a bohům Amónovců i bohům Pelištejců. Hospodina opustili a nesloužili mu. 7 Hospodin proto vzplanul proti Izraeli hněvem a vydal jej napospas Pelištejcům a Amónovcům. 8 Ti potírali a týrali Izraelce od toho roku po osmnáct let, i všechny Izraelce za Jordánem v zemi emorejské v Gileádu. 9 Amónovci přešli Jordán, aby bojovali také proti Judovi a Benjamínovi i proti domu Efrajimovu. Na Izraele dolehlo veliké soužení. 10 I úpěli Izraelci k Hospodinu: „Zhřešili jsme proti tobě, opustili jsme svého Boha a sloužili baalům.“ 11 Hospodin řekl Izraelcům: „Což jsem vás nevysvobodil od Egypťanů, Emorejců, Amónovců a Pelištejců? 12 Také Sidónci, Amálek a Maónci vás utlačovali, ale úpěli jste ke mně a já jsem vás vysvobozoval z jejich rukou. 13 Vy jste mě však zase opustili a sloužíte jiným bohům, proto vás už nevysvobodím. 14 Jděte si úpět k bohům, které jste si vybrali, ať vás v čas vašeho soužení vysvobodí!“ 15 Izraelci Hospodinu odpověděli: „Zhřešili jsme. Nalož s námi, jak sám uznáš za vhodné, jenom nás ještě tentokrát vyprosti!“ 16 Odstranili ze svého středu cizí bohy a sloužili Hospodinu. I ustrnul se nad bídou Izraele. 17 Amónovci se svolali a utábořili se v Gileádu. Izraelci se také shromáždili a utábořili se v Mispě. 18 Lid a gileádští velmožové se mezi sebou dohodli: „Ten, kdo zahájí boj proti Amónovcům, bude náčelníkem všech obyvatel Gileádu.“

Tola and Jair

1 After Abimelech there arose to save Israel Tola the son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, and he lived at Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. (Jz 24,33; Sd 2,16; Sd 10,12) 2 And he judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried at Shamir. 3 After him arose Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two years. 4 And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities, called Havvoth-jair to this day, which are in the land of Gilead. (Dt 3,14; Sd 5,10; Sd 12,14) 5 And Jair died and was buried in Kamon.

Further Disobedience and Oppression

6 The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. And they forsook the Lord and did not serve him. (Dt 31,16; Sd 2,11; Sd 2,13; Sd 10,10; Sd 10,13; 1Kr 11,5; 1Kr 11,7; 1Kr 11,33; 2Kr 23,13)

7 So the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites, (Sd 2,14) 8 and they crushed and oppressed the people of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the people of Israel who were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. 9 And the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was severely distressed. 10 And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, saying, “We have sinned against you, because we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals.” (Sd 3,9; Sd 10,6; Sd 10,13) 11 And the Lord said to the people of Israel, “Did I not save you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the Ammonites and from the Philistines?
