— Žena pro Izáka - Abrahamův služebník přivádí pro dědice zaslíbení ženu, kterou vybral Hospodin.

1 Abraham byl stařec pokročilého věku. Hospodin mu ve všem požehnal. 2 I řekl Abraham služebníku, správci svého domu, který vládl vším, co mu patřilo: „Polož ruku na můj klín. 3 Zavazuji tě přísahou při Hospodinu, Bohu nebes a Bohu země, abys nebral pro mého syna ženu z dcer Kenaanců, mezi nimiž sídlím. 4 Půjdeš do mé země a do mého rodiště a vezmeš odtamtud ženu pro mého syna Izáka.“ 5 Služebník mu na to odvětil: „Co když mě ta žena nebude chtít následovat sem, do této země? Mám tvého syna zavést zpátky do země, z níž jsi vyšel?“ 6 Abraham řekl: „Chraň se tam mého syna zavést! 7 Hospodin, Bůh nebes, který mě vzal z domu mého otce a z mé rodné země, promluvil ke mně a přísahal mi, že tuto zemi dá mému potomstvu; on sám vyšle před tebou svého posla, a ty budeš moci vzít odtamtud ženu pro mého syna. 8 Kdyby tě snad ta žena nechtěla následovat, budeš své přísahy zproštěn. Jen tam mého syna nezaváděj!“ 9 I položil služebník ruku na klín svého pána Abrahama a odpřisáhl mu to. 10 Služebník tedy vzal deset velbloudů svého pána a jel. Vybaven všelijakými drahocennostmi svého pána vydal se na cestu do aramského Dvojříčí, do města Náchorova. 11 Před městem zastavil velbloudy u studně s vodou. Bylo to navečer, v době, kdy ženy vycházívají čerpat vodu. 12 Tu řekl: „Hospodine, Bože mého pána Abrahama, dopřej mi to prosím a prokaž milosrdenství mému pánu Abrahamovi. 13 Hle, stojím nad pramenem a dcery mužů města vycházejí čerpat vodu. 14 Dívce, která přijde, řeknu: Nakloň svůj džbán, abych se napil. Odvětí-li: ‚Jen pij, a také tvé velbloudy napojím,‘ předurčil jsi ji pro svého služebníka Izáka. Podle toho poznám, že jsi mému pánu prokázal milosrdenství.“ 15 Ještě než domluvil, přišla Rebeka, která se narodila Betúelovi, synu Milky, ženy Abrahamova bratra Náchora. Měla na rameni džbán. 16 Byla to dívka velmi půvabného vzhledu, panna, muž ji dosud nepoznal. Sestoupila k pramenu, naplnila svůj džbán a vystoupila. 17 Služebník jí přiběhl naproti a řekl: „Dej mi prosím doušek vody ze džbánu!“ 18 Odvětila: „Jen se napij, můj pane.“ A rychle spustila džbán na ruku a dala mu pít. 19 Když mu dala napít, řekla: „Načerpám i tvým velbloudům, aby se napili.“ 20 Rychle vylila vodu ze svého džbánu do napajedla a znovu odběhla ke studni čerpat, aby napojila i všechny jeho velbloudy. 21 Muž ji přitom mlčky pozoroval, aby poznal, zda Hospodin dává jeho cestě zdar, či nikoli. 22 Když se velbloudi napili, vzal muž zlatý nosní kroužek o váze půl šekelu a dva náramky pro ni o váze deseti šekelů zlata. 23 Řekl: „Pověz mi prosím, čí jsi dcera? Bylo by pro nás v domě tvého otce místo k přenocování?“ 24 Odvětila mu: „Jsem dcera Betúela, syna Milky, kterého porodila Náchorovi.“ 25 A dodala: „Slámy i obroku máme dost, i místo k přenocování.“ 26 Tu padl muž na kolena, klaněl se Hospodinu 27 a řekl: „Požehnán buď Hospodin, Bůh mého pána Abrahama, že od mého pána neodňal své milosrdenství a svou věrnost. Dovedl mě až do domu bratří mého pána.“ 28 Dívka odběhla a oznámila rodině své matky, co a jak se stalo. 29 Rebeka měla bratra jménem Lábana. Lában běžel ven k tomu muži u pramene. 30 Viděl totiž nosní kroužek a na sestřiných rukou náramky a slyšel slova své sestry Rebeky, o čem s ní ten muž mluvil. Přišel k tomu muži, který dosud stál u velbloudů nad pramenem, 31 a řekl: „Pojď, požehnaný Hospodinův! Proč stojíš venku? Už jsem připravil dům i místo pro velbloudy.“ 32 I vešel ten muž do domu a odstrojil velbloudy. Lában dal velbloudům slámu a obrok; jemu a jeho mužům dal vodu k umytí nohou. 33 Pak dal před něho prostřít, aby pojedl. On však řekl: „Nebudu jíst, dokud nevyřídím svou záležitost.“ Lában odvětil: „Mluv.“ 34 Pravil tedy: „Jsem služebník Abrahamův. 35 Hospodin mému pánu velmi požehnal, takže je zámožný. Dal mu brav a skot, stříbro a zlato, otroky a otrokyně, velbloudy a osly. 36 A Sára, žena mého pána, ač velmi stará, porodila mému pánu syna. Jemu dá všechno, co má. 37 Mne pak můj pán zavázal přísahou: ‚Nevezmeš pro mého syna ženu z dcer Kenaanců, v jejichž zemi sídlím. 38 Půjdeš do domu mého otce a k mé čeledi a vezmeš odtamtud ženu pro mého syna.‘ 39 Nato jsem svému pánu řekl: ‚Možná, že se mnou ta žena nepůjde.‘ 40 Odvětil mi: ‚Hospodin, před nímž chodím, pošle s tebou svého posla a dá tvé cestě zdar. Ty pak vezmeš pro mého syna ženu z mé čeledi a z domu mého otce. 41 Svého závazku se zprostíš tehdy, když dojdeš k mé čeledi: Nedají-li ti ji, budeš svého závazku zproštěn.‘ 42 Dnes jsem přišel k prameni a řekl jsem: ‚Hospodine, Bože mého pána Abrahama, kéž bys dal zdar cestě, po níž jdu!‘ 43 Hle, stojím nad pramenem. Dívce, která přijde čerpat vodu, řeknu: ‚Dej mi prosím napít ze svého džbánu trochu vody.‘ 44 Jestliže mi ona řekne: ‚Jen se napij, a také tvým velbloudům načerpám,‘ bude to žena, kterou synu mého pána předurčil Hospodin. 45 Ještě jsem sám u sebe nedomluvil, když tu přišla Rebeka se džbánem na rameni. Sestoupila k pramenu a čerpala vodu. Řekl jsem jí: ‚Dej mi prosím napít!‘ 46 Rychle spustila džbán s ramene a řekla: ‚Jen se napij, a také tvé velbloudy napojím.‘ Napil jsem se a ona napojila i velbloudy. 47 Pak jsem se jí zeptal: ‚Čí jsi dcera?‘ Odvětila: ‚Jsem dcera Betúela, syna Náchora, kterého mu porodila Milka.‘ Navlékl jsem jí tento kroužek do nosu a náramky na ruce. 48 Padl jsem na kolena a klaněl se Hospodinu. Dobrořečil jsem Hospodinu, Bohu mého pána Abrahama, že mě vedl pravou cestou, abych mohl dceru pánova bratra přivést pro jeho syna. 49 A teď mi povězte, chcete-li mému pánu prokázat milosrdenství a věrnost. Ne-li, povězte mi, a já se obrátím napravo nebo nalevo.“ 50 Lában i Betúel odpověděli: „Toto vyšlo od Hospodina a my nemůžeme tobě říci ani zlé ani dobré. 51 Hle, tady je Rebeka. Vezmi si ji a jdi, ať se stane ženou syna tvého pána, jak mluvil Hospodin.“ 52 Jakmile Abrahamův služebník uslyšel jejich slova, poklonil se Hospodinu až k zemi. 53 Potom vyňal stříbrné a zlaté předměty a látky a dal je Rebece, též jejímu bratrovi a její matce dal vzácné dary. 54 Pak jedli a pili, on i mužové, kteří byli s ním, a přenocovali. Když ráno vstali, řekl: „Propusťte mě k mému pánu.“ 55 Ale její bratr a matka odvětili: „Ať s námi dívka ještě nějaký čas zůstane, aspoň deset dní; potom půjde.“ 56 On však jim řekl: „Nezdržujte mě, když Hospodin dopřál mé cestě zdaru. Propusťte mě, ať mohu jít k svému pánu.“ 57 Odvětili: „Zavoláme dívku a zeptáme se přímo jí.“ 58 Zavolali Rebeku a otázali se jí: „Půjdeš s tímto mužem?“ Řekla: „Půjdu.“ 59 Propustili tedy svou sestru Rebeku a její chůvu i Abrahamova služebníka a jeho muže. 60 Rebece požehnali slovy: „Sestro naše, buď matkou nesčíslných tisíců, tvé potomstvo ať obsadí bránu těch, kteří je nenávidí!“ 61 Rebeka a její dívky vsedly hned potom na velbloudy a následovaly toho muže. Tak dostal služebník Rebeku a odešel. 62 Izák právě přicházel od Studnice Živého, který mě vidí, neboť sídlil v Negebu. 63 Vyšel totiž k večeru na pole, aby přemýšlel. Tu se rozhlédl a spatřil přicházet velbloudy. 64 I Rebeka se rozhlédla a spatřila Izáka. Sesedla z velblouda 65 a otázala se služebníka: „Kdo je ten muž, který nám jde po poli vstříc?“ Služebník odvětil: „To je můj pán.“ Vzala tedy roušku a zahalila se. 66 Služebník podal Izákovi zprávu o všem, co vykonal. 67 Izák pak uvedl Rebeku do stanu své matky Sáry. Vzal si ji a stala se jeho ženou. A zamiloval si ji. Tak našel útěchu po smrti své matky.

1 Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years. And the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. (Gn 13,2; Gn 24,35) 2 And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who had charge of all that he had, “Put your hand under my thigh, (Gn 15,2; Gn 24,9; Gn 47,29) 3 that I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell, (Gn 26,34; Gn 27,46; Dt 7,3; 2K 6,14)

4 but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.” (Gn 28,2) 5 The servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land. Must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?” 6 Abraham said to him, “See to it that you do not take my son back there. 7 The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘To your offspring I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. 8 But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be free from this oath of mine; only you must not take my son back there.” (Jz 2,17) 9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and swore to him concerning this matter. (Gn 24,2) 10 Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master; and he arose and went to Mesopotamia^[1] to the city of Nahor. 13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. (Gn 24,43) 14 Let the young woman to whom I shall say, ‘Please let down your jar that I may drink,’ and who shall say, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels’—let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this^[2] I shall know that you have shown steadfast love to my master.” (Gn 15,8) 15 Before he had finished speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, came out with her water jar on her shoulder. (Gn 11,29; Gn 22,23) 16 The young woman was very attractive in appearance, a maiden^[3] whom no man had known. She went down to the spring and filled her jar and came up. (Gn 26,7) 17 Then the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water to drink from your jar.” 18 She said, “Drink, my lord.” And she quickly let down her jar upon her hand and gave him a drink. 19 When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will draw water for your camels also, until they have finished drinking.” 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw water, and she drew for all his camels. 21 The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the Lord had prospered his journey or not. 22 When the camels had finished drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a half shekel,^[4] and two bracelets for her arms weighing ten gold shekels, 23 and said, “Please tell me whose daughter you are. Is there room in your father’s house for us to spend the night?” 24 She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.” (Gn 22,23; Gn 24,15) 25 She added, “We have plenty of both straw and fodder, and room to spend the night.” 26 The man bowed his head and worshiped the Lord (Gn 24,48; Gn 24,52; Ex 4,31) 27 and said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his steadfast love and his faithfulness toward my master. 28 Then the young woman ran and told her mother’s household about these things. 29 Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban. Laban ran out toward the man, to the spring. (Gn 25,20; Gn 28,2; Gn 29,5) 30 As soon as he saw the ring and the bracelets on his sister’s arms, and heard the words of Rebekah his sister, “Thus the man spoke to me,” he went to the man. And behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. 31 He said, “Come in, O blessed of the Lord. Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house and a place for the camels.” (Gn 26,29; Sd 17,2; Rt 3,10) 32 So the man came to the house and unharnessed the camels, and gave straw and fodder to the camels, and there was water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. But he said, “I will not eat until I have said what I have to say.” He said, “Speak on.” 34 So he said, “I am Abraham’s servant. 35 The Lord has greatly blessed my master, and he has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, camels and donkeys. (Gn 24,1) 36 And Sarah my master’s wife bore a son to my master when she was old, and to him he has given all that he has. (Gn 21,2; Gn 25,5) 37 My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell, (Gn 24,3) 38 but you shall go to my father’s house and to my clan and take a wife for my son.’ 39 I said to my master, ‘Perhaps the woman will not follow me.’ 40 But he said to me, ‘The Lord, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you and prosper your way. You shall take a wife for my son from my clan and from my father’s house. (Gn 17,1; Gn 24,21) 41 Then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my clan. And if they will not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.’ 42 “I came today to the spring and said, ‘O Lord, the God of my master Abraham, if now you are prospering the way that I go, (Gn 24,12; Gn 24,27; Gn 24,40) 43 behold, I am standing by the spring of water. Let the virgin who comes out to draw water, to whom I shall say, “Please give me a little water from your jar to drink,” (Gn 24,13) 44 and who will say to me, “Drink, and I will draw for your camels also,” let her be the woman whom the Lord has appointed for my master’s son.’ (Gn 24,14; Gn 24,18) 45 “Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her water jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ (1S 1,13) 46 She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will give your camels drink also.’ So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also. 47 Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her arms. (Ez 16,11) 48 Then I bowed my head and worshiped the Lord and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way^[5] to take the daughter of my master’s kinsman for his son. 49 Now then, if you are going to show steadfast love and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.” (Gn 47,29; Jz 2,14) 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, “The thing has come from the Lord; we cannot speak to you bad or good. (Gn 31,24; 2S 13,22) 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you; take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the Lord has spoken.” (Gn 24,13; Gn 24,42) 52 When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the earth before the Lord. (Gn 24,48) 53 And the servant brought out jewelry of silver and of gold, and garments, and gave them to Rebekah. He also gave to her brother and to her mother costly ornaments. 54 And he and the men who were with him ate and drank, and they spent the night there. When they arose in the morning, he said, “Send me away to my master.” (Gn 24,56; Gn 24,59) 55 Her brother and her mother said, “Let the young woman remain with us a while, at least ten days; after that she may go.” 56 But he said to them, “Do not delay me, since the Lord has prospered my way. Send me away that I may go to my master.” 57 They said, “Let us call the young woman and ask her.” 58 And they called Rebekah and said to her, “Will you go with this man?” She said, “I will go.” 59 So they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse, and Abraham’s servant and his men. (Gn 35,8) 60 And they blessed Rebekah and said to her, “Our sister, may you become thousands of ten thousands, and may your offspring possess the gate of those who hate him!”^[6] (Gn 17,16; Gn 22,17) 61 Then Rebekah and her young women arose and rode on the camels and followed the man. Thus the servant took Rebekah and went his way. 62 Now Isaac had returned from Beer-lahai-roi and was dwelling in the Negeb. (Gn 16,14; Gn 25,11) 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field toward evening. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, there were camels coming. (Ž 77,12; Ž 143,5) 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she dismounted from the camel 65 and said to the servant, “Who is that man, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself. 66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. 67 Then Isaac brought her into the tent of Sarah his mother and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death. (Gn 23,2; Gn 37,35; Gn 38,12)
