The Plot to Kill Jesus

1 Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. (太26:2; 可14:1; 约6:4) 2 And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.

Judas to Betray Jesus

3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. 5:3) 4 He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. (徒4:1; 徒5:24; 徒5:26) 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6 So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.

The Passover with the Disciples

7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread, on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. (出12:18; 太26:17; 可14:12; 林前5:7) 8 So Jesus[1] sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat it.” 9 They said to him, “Where will you have us prepare it?” 10 He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters 11 and tell the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ (路2:7; 约11:28) 12 And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” (徒1:13) 13 And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

Institution of the Lord’s Supper

14 And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. (太26:20; 可14:17) 15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you I will not eat it[2] until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” (路14:15; 路22:30; 启19:9) 17 And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. (太15:36) 18 For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” (太26:29; 可14:25; 路22:16) 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 11:23) 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.[3] (出24:8; 亚9:11; 路22:19; 林后3:6; 來13:20) 21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. (诗41:9; 太26:21; 可14:18; 约13:18; 约13:21) 22 For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” (徒2:23) 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.

Who Is the Greatest?

24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. (可9:34; 路9:46) 25 And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. (太18:1; 太20:25; 可10:42; 彼前5:3) 26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. (太23:11; 路9:48; 路22:25) 27 For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. (太20:28; 路12:37) 28 “You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, (來2:18; 來4:15) 29 and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, (太25:34; 太28:18; 约17:18; 徒14:22; 提后2:12; 启1:6) 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you,[4] that he might sift you like wheat, (伯1:6; 伯2:1; 摩9:9; 约16:32; 林前5:5; 林后2:11; 彼前5:8) 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” (诗51:13; 约17:9; 约17:11; 约17:15; 约21:15) 33 Peter[5] said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” (约21:19; 徒12:4) 34 Jesus[6] said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”

Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

35 And he said to them, “When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” (太10:9; 可6:8; 路9:3; 路10:4) 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about me has its fulfillment.” (赛53:12; 太1:22; 路13:33; 约17:4; 约19:30; 徒1:16) 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “It is enough.”

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

39 And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. (太21:1; 太26:30; 可14:26; 路21:37; 约18:1; 约18:2) 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” (太6:13; 太26:36; 可14:32; 约18:2; 彼前4:7) 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, (徒7:60) 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” (太6:10; 太20:22; 來5:7) 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. (太4:11; 來1:14) 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.[7] (路22:42) 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, (太26:47; 可14:43; 路22:3; 约18:3) 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” (路22:38) 50 And one of them struck the servant[8] of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? (路22:4) 53 When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”

Peter Denies Jesus

54 Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house, and Peter was following at a distance. (太26:57; 太26:58; 可14:53; 可14:54; 约18:15) 55 And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. (太26:3; 太26:69; 可14:66; 约18:16; 约18:25) 56 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” 58 And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” (徒12:15) 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” (可10:21; 路22:34; 徒3:13) 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Is Mocked

63 Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. (太26:67; 可14:65; 约18:22) 64 They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?” (路7:39; 路22:63) 65 And they said many other things against him, blaspheming him.

Jesus Before the Council

66 When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said, (太5:22; 太26:63; 太27:1; 可14:61; 可15:1; 路22:67; 约18:19; 约18:28; 徒22:5) 67 “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, (太1:17; 约10:24) 68 and if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” (可16:19; 徒7:56; 來1:3) 70 So they all said, “Are you the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, “You say that I am.” (太14:33; 太26:25; 太27:11; 可15:2; 路23:3) 71 Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.”
