1 Entonces Josué llamó a los rubenitas, a los gaditas y a la media tribu de Manasés, 2 y les dijo: Vosotros habéis guardado todo lo que Moisés, siervo de YHVH os ordenó, y habéis obedecido mi voz en todo lo que os he mandado. 3 No habéis abandonado a vuestros hermanos en estos muchos días hasta hoy, sino que habéis respetado la observancia del mandamiento de YHVH vuestro Dios. 4 Y ahora que YHVH vuestro Dios ha dado reposo a vuestros hermanos, tal como les habló, tornad vuestras tiendas, y volved a la tierra de vuestra propiedad, que Moisés siervo de YHVH os entregó allende el Jordán. 5 Solamente tened mucho cuidado de poner por obra el mandamiento y la enseñanza que Moisés siervo de YHVH os intimó: amar a YHVH vuestro Dios y andar en todos sus caminos, guardar sus mandamientos y apegarse a Él, y servirle con todo vuestro corazón y con toda vuestra alma. 6 Y los bendijo Josué, y los despidió, y se fueron a sus tiendas. 7 Y Moisés había dado a la media tribu de Manasés posesión en Basán, pero a la otra media tribu Josué le dio heredad entre sus hermanos hacia el occidente, allende el Jordán. También a éstos bendijo Josué cuando los envió a sus tiendas, 8 y les habló, diciendo: Volved a vuestras tiendas con riquezas abundantes, con mucho ganado, con plata, con oro, con bronce, con hierro, y con muchos vestidos. ¡Repartid el despojo de vuestros enemigos con vuestros hermanos! 9 Entonces los hijos de Rubén, los hijos de Gad y la media tribu de Manasés regresaron, y se fueron de entre los hijos de Israel, de Silo, que está en la tierra de Canaán, para ir a la tierra de Galaad, a la tierra de su propiedad, la cual habían adquirido, conforme al mandato de YHVH por medio de Moisés. 10 Y cuando los hijos de Rubén, los hijos de Gad y la media tribu de Manasés llegaron a las cercanías del Jordán, que está en la tierra de Canaán, edificaron un altar junto al Jordán, un altar de apariencia grandiosa. 11 Y los hijos de Israel oyeron decir: He aquí los hijos de Rubén, los hijos de Gad y la media tribu de Manasés han edificado el altar que está enfrente de la tierra de Canaán, en las cercanías del Jordán, en el lado de los hijos de Israel. 12 Cuando los hijos de Israel oyeron esto, toda la comunidad de los hijos de Israel se congregó en Silo, para subir en batalla contra ellos. 13 Y los hijos de Israel enviaron a Finees, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, a los hijos de Rubén, a los hijos de Gad y a la media tribu de Manasés, a la tierra de Galaad, 14 y con él a diez jefes, un jefe de cada casa paterna de todas las tribus de Israel, cada uno de los cuales era cabeza de su casa paterna en la multitud de Israel. 15 Llegaron pues a los hijos de Rubén, a los hijos de Gad y a la media tribu de Manasés, en tierra de Galaad, y les hablaron, diciendo: 16 Toda la comunidad de YHVH dice así: ¿Qué traición es ésta con que habéis prevaricado contra el Dios de Israel, al apartaros hoy de seguir a YHVH, y construiros un altar para rebelaros hoy contra YHVH? 17 ¿Acaso fue poca la iniquidad de Peor, de la que aún no estamos limpios hasta este día, aunque hubo una mortandad en la comunidad de YHVH? 18 ¡Y vosotros os apartáis hoy de en pos de YHVH! Y sucederá que por haberos rebelado hoy contra YHVH, mañana Él estará airado contra toda la comunidad de Israel. 19 Y ciertamente, si la tierra de vuestra propiedad es impura, pasaos a la tierra de la posesión de YHVH, en la cual está el Tabernáculo de YHVH, y tomad posesión entre nosotros, pero no os rebeléis contra YHVH ni os rebeléis contra nosotros, edificándoos un altar aparte del altar de YHVH nuestro Dios. 20 ¿No cometió Acán ben Zera una prevaricación con el anatema, y vino la ira sobre toda la comunidad de Israel? Y aquel hombre no fue el único que falleció por su iniquidad. 21 Entonces los hijos de Rubén, los hijos de Gad y la media tribu de Manasés respondieron y hablaron a las cabezas de los millares de Israel: 22 YHVH, el Dios de dioses, YHVH el Dios de dioses, Él lo sabe, y que lo sepa Israel: Si ha sido rebelión o prevaricación contra YHVH, no nos salves en este día. 23 ¿Edificamos acaso un altar para apartarnos de en pos de YHVH, o para sacrificar sobre él holocausto u ofrenda, o para hacer sobre él sacrificios de paz? ¡Sea YHVH el que pida cuenta! 24 ¿O lo hicimos por temor, diciendo: Mañana vuestros hijos dirán a nuestros hijos: ¿Qué tenéis vosotros con YHVH, el Dios de Israel? 25 Pues YHVH ha puesto el Jordán por frontera entre nosotros y vosotros, oh hijos de Rubén e hijos de Gad, vosotros no tenéis parte en YHVH. Y así vuestros hijos harían que nuestros hijos dejaran de temer a YHVH. 26 Por tanto, dijimos: Apresurémonos a edificarnos un altar, no para holocausto ni para sacrificio, 27 sino como un testimonio entre nosotros y vosotros, y entre nuestras generaciones después de nosotros, para servir en la obra de YHVH, en su presencia, con nuestros holocaustos, con nuestros sacrificios, y con nuestras ofrendas de paz; así vuestros hijos no dirán mañana a nuestros hijos: Vosotros no tenéis parte con YHVH. 28 Nosotros pues dijimos: Entonces, si mañana nos dicen esto a nosotros o a nuestros descendientes, responderemos: Mirad la réplica del altar de YHVH, el cual hicieron nuestros ancestros, no para holocaustos o sacrificios, sino para que fuera testimonio entre nosotros y vosotros. 29 Nunca tal acontezca que nos rebelemos contra YHVH, o que nos apartemos hoy de seguir a YHVH al edificar un altar para holocaustos, para ofrenda o para sacrificio, aparte del altar de YHVH nuestro Dios que está delante de su Tabernáculo. 30 Y Finees el sacerdote, y los jefes de la comunidad, y las cabezas de los millares de Israel que estaban con él, escucharon las palabras que hablaron los hijos de Rubén, los hijos de Gad y los hijos de Manasés, y les pareció bien ante sus ojos. 31 Entonces Finees, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, dijo a los hijos de Rubén, a los hijos de Gad y a los hijos de Manasés: Hoy hemos entendido que YHVH está entre nosotros, pues no habéis cometido contra YHVH esta prevaricación. Así habéis librado a los hijos de Israel de la mano de YHVH. 32 Y Finees, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, y los jefes, volvieron de estar con los hijos de Rubén y con los hijos de Gad en la tierra de Galaad, a la tierra de Canaán, a los hijos de Israel, y les dieron la respuesta. 33 Y el asunto pareció bien a ojos de los hijos de Israel, y bendijeron a ’Elohim, y no hablaron más de subir contra ellos en guerra para devastar la tierra en que habitaban los hijos de Rubén y los hijos de Gad. 34 Y los hijos de Rubén y los hijos de Gad proclamaron respecto al altar: Sea testigo entre nosotros de que YHVH es Ha-’Elohim.

1 At that time Joshua summoned the Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, 2 and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you and have obeyed my voice in all that I have commanded you. (Nm 32:20; Dt 3:18; Jos 1:16) 3 You have not forsaken your brothers these many days, down to this day, but have been careful to keep the charge of the Lord your God. 4 And now the Lord your God has given rest to your brothers, as he promised them. Therefore turn and go to your tents in the land where your possession lies, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. (Jos 11:23; Jos 13:8) 5 Only be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and to cling to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” (Dt 6:5; Dt 6:6; Dt 6:17; Dt 10:12; Dt 11:1; Dt 11:13; Dt 11:22; Jos 23:11) 6 So Joshua blessed them and sent them away, and they went to their tents. (Jos 14:13) 7 Now to the one half of the tribe of Manasseh Moses had given a possession in Bashan, but to the other half Joshua had given a possession beside their brothers in the land west of the Jordan. And when Joshua sent them away to their homes and blessed them, (Jos 17:5) 8 he said to them, “Go back to your tents with much wealth and with very much livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, and iron, and with much clothing. Divide the spoil of your enemies with your brothers.” (Nm 31:27; 1 S 30:24) 9 So the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home, parting from the people of Israel at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, their own land of which they had possessed themselves by command of the Lord through Moses. (Nm 32:1; Nm 32:26; Nm 32:29) 10 And when they came to the region of the Jordan that is in the land of Canaan, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, an altar of imposing size. 11 And the people of Israel heard it said, “Behold, the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built the altar at the frontier of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the people of Israel.” (Dt 13:12) 12 And when the people of Israel heard of it, the whole assembly of the people of Israel gathered at Shiloh to make war against them. (Jue 20:1) 13 Then the people of Israel sent to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, (Ex 6:25; Nm 25:7; Jue 20:28) 14 and with him ten chiefs, one from each of the tribal families of Israel, every one of them the head of a family among the clans of Israel. (Nm 1:4) 15 And they came to the people of Reuben, the people of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, in the land of Gilead, and they said to them, 16 “Thus says the whole congregation of the Lord, ‘What is this breach of faith that you have committed against the God of Israel in turning away this day from following the Lord by building yourselves an altar this day in rebellion against the Lord? (Lv 17:8; Nm 14:9; Dt 12:13; Jos 22:18) 17 Have we not had enough of the sin at Peor from which even yet we have not cleansed ourselves, and for which there came a plague upon the congregation of the Lord, (Nm 25:3; Dt 4:3; Sal 106:28) 18 that you too must turn away this day from following the Lord? And if you too rebel against the Lord today then tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel. (Nm 16:22; Jos 22:16) 19 But now, if the land of your possession is unclean, pass over into the Lord’s land where the Lord’s tabernacle stands, and take for yourselves a possession among us. Only do not rebel against the Lord or make us as rebels by building for yourselves an altar other than the altar of the Lord our God. (Jos 18:1; Jos 22:16; Jos 22:18) 20 Did not Achan the son of Zerah break faith in the matter of the devoted things, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? And he did not perish alone for his iniquity.’” (Jos 7:1; Jos 7:5; Jos 22:18) 21 Then the people of Reuben, the people of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh said in answer to the heads of the families of Israel, 22 “The Mighty One, God, the Lord! The Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows; and let Israel itself know! If it was in rebellion or in breach of faith against the Lord, do not spare us today (Dt 10:17; 1 R 8:39) 23 for building an altar to turn away from following the Lord. Or if we did so to offer burnt offerings or grain offerings or peace offerings on it, may the Lord himself take vengeance. (Dt 18:19; 1 S 20:16) 24 No, but we did it from fear that in time to come your children might say to our children, ‘What have you to do with the Lord, the God of Israel? (Jos 4:6; Jos 4:21) 25 For the Lord has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you, you people of Reuben and people of Gad. You have no portion in the Lord.’ So your children might make our children cease to worship the Lord. 26 Therefore we said, ‘Let us now build an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice, 27 but to be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we do perform the service of the Lord in his presence with our burnt offerings and sacrifices and peace offerings, so your children will not say to our children in time to come, “You have no portion in the Lord.”’ (Gn 31:48; Dt 12:5; Dt 12:17; Jos 22:34; Jos 24:27) 28 And we thought, ‘If this should be said to us or to our descendants in time to come, we should say, “Behold, the copy of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifice, but to be a witness between us and you.”’ (Jos 22:27) 29 Far be it from us that we should rebel against the Lord and turn away this day from following the Lord by building an altar for burnt offering, grain offering, or sacrifice, other than the altar of the Lord our God that stands before his tabernacle!” (Jos 22:16) 30 When Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation, the heads of the families of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the people of Manasseh spoke, it was good in their eyes. (Jos 22:13; Jos 22:33) 31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the people of Reuben and the people of Gad and the people of Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is in our midst, because you have not committed this breach of faith against the Lord. Now you have delivered the people of Israel from the hand of the Lord.” (Lv 26:11) 32 Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the chiefs, returned from the people of Reuben and the people of Gad in the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the people of Israel, and brought back word to them. (Jos 22:10; Jos 22:15) 33 And the report was good in the eyes of the people of Israel. And the people of Israel blessed God and spoke no more of making war against them to destroy the land where the people of Reuben and the people of Gad were settled. (Jos 22:30; 1 Cr 29:20; Neh 8:6; Dn 2:19; Lc 2:28) 34 The people of Reuben and the people of Gad called the altar Witness, “For,” they said, “it is a witness between us that the Lord is God.” (Jos 22:27)
