Los dos espías

1 Entretanto, Josué ben Nun había enviado secretamente desde Sitim a dos espías, diciendo: Id y reconoced el país, particularmente a Jericó. Y ellos fueron a casa de cierta mujer ramera cuyo nombre era Rahab, y se acostaron allí. 2 Pero se le dio aviso al rey de Jericó, diciendo: He ahí unos hombres de los hijos de Israel han entrado durante la noche para espiar el país. 3 Entonces el rey de Jericó envió a decir a Rahab: ¡Echa fuera a esos hombres que llegaron a ti y han entrado en tu casa, pues han venido a espiar todo el país! 4 Pero la mujer ya había tomado a los dos hombres y los había ocultado. Ella pues respondió: Verdad es que los hombres vinieron a mí, pero yo no sabía de dónde eran, 5 y al oscurecer, cuando se iba a cerrar la puerta de la ciudad, los hombres salieron. No sé dónde se hayan ido esos hombres. Seguid rápidamente en pos de ellos que los alcanzaréis. 6 Pero ella los había hecho subir al terrado, y los había escondido entre unos manojos de lino que tenía acomodados en el terrado. 7 Así pues, aquellos hombres fueron en pos de ellos camino del Jordán, hasta los vados; y tan pronto como los perseguidores hubieron salido, se cerraron las puertas. 8 Y antes que se acostaran, ella subió al terrado y les dijo: 9 Yo se que YHVH os ha dado la tierra, y que el terror vuestro ha caído sobre nosotros, y que todos los habitantes de la tierra desfallecen ante vosotros. 10 Porque hemos oído cómo YHVH hizo secar las aguas del Mar Rojo delante de vosotros cuando salisteis de Egipto, y lo que hicisteis a los dos reyes del amorreo allende el Jordán: a Sehón y a Og, a quienes destruisteis por completo. 11 Y cuando lo oímos, se nos derritió el corazón, y no ha quedado más aliento en hombre alguno por causa de vosotros, porque YHVH vuestro Dios, Él solo es ’Elohim arriba en los cielos y abajo en la tierra. 12 Ahora pues, os ruego que me juréis por YHVH, que como he hecho misericordia con vosotros, así también vosotros haréis misericordia con la casa de mi padre, de lo cual me daréis una contraseña segura, 13 y haréis que viva mi padre y mi madre, mis hermanos y hermanas, y todo lo suyo, librando nuestras almas de la muerte. 14 A lo cual le dijeron los hombres: Nuestra vida responderá por la vuestra, con tal que no denunciéis este asunto nuestro; y será que cuando YHVH nos entregue esta tierra, mostraremos contigo fidelidad y bondad. 15 Entonces ella los hizo descender con una cuerda por la ventana (pues su casa estaba adosada al muro, y ella vivía en el muro), 16 y les dijo: Marchaos al monte, no sea que os alcancen los perseguidores. Os esconderéis allí tres días, hasta que hayan vuelto los perseguidores, y después seguiréis vuestro camino. 17 Y los hombres le dijeron: Sin culpa seremos en lo tocante a este juramento tuyo con que nos has juramentado, 18 a menos que cuando entremos en el país, tú ates este cordón de hilo escarlata a la ventana por donde nos vas a descolgar. Reunirás entonces a tu padre y a tu madre, a tus hermanos y a toda la casa de tu padre contigo en tu casa, 19 pues acontecerá que la sangre de todo aquel que salga fuera de las puertas de tu casa, caerá sobre su propia cabeza, y nosotros estaremos sin culpa, pero la sangre de cualquiera que esté contigo en la casa caerá sobre nuestra cabeza, si mano alguna lo toca. 20 Pero si denuncias este asunto nuestro, quedaremos desobligados de este juramento tuyo con que nos has juramentado. 21 A lo cual ella respondió: Sea conforme a vuestras palabras. De esta manera los despidió y se fueron, y ella ató a la ventana el cordón escarlata. 22 Ellos pues caminaron y llegaron al monte, y permanecieron allí tres días, hasta que los perseguidores regresaron, porque quienes los perseguían habían buscado por todo el camino, pero no los habían hallado. 23 Entonces los dos hombres regresaron, y descendiendo del monte, cruzaron al otro lado y llegaron adonde Josué ben Nun, y le relataron todo lo que les habían ocurrido. 24 Y dijeron a Josué: ¡Ciertamente YHVH ha entregado en nuestra mano toda esta tierra, porque todos los habitantes de la tierra desmayan a causa de nosotros!

Rahab Hides the Spies

1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent^[1] two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. (Nm 25:1; Mt 1:5; Heb 11:31; Stg 2:25)

2 And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.” 3 Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.” 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 5 And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.” 6 But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof. 7 So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out. (Jue 3:28; Jue 7:24) 8 Before the men^[2] lay down, she came up to them on the roof 9 and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. 12 Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign (Jos 2:18) 13 that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” 14 And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.” (Jue 1:24) 15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window, for her house was built into the city wall, so that she lived in the wall. (1 S 19:12; Hch 9:25; 2 Co 11:33) 16 And she said^[4] to them, “Go into the hills, or the pursuers will encounter you, and hide there three days until the pursuers have returned. Then afterward you may go your way.” 17 The men said to her, “We will be guiltless with respect to this oath of yours that you have made us swear. 18 Behold, when we come into the land, you shall tie this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and you shall gather into your house your father and mother, your brothers, and all your father’s household. (Jos 2:12; Jos 6:23) 19 Then if anyone goes out of the doors of your house into the street, his blood shall be on his own head, and we shall be guiltless. But if a hand is laid on anyone who is with you in the house, his blood shall be on our head. (Mt 27:25) 20 But if you tell this business of ours, then we shall be guiltless with respect to your oath that you have made us swear.” (Jos 2:14) 21 And she said, “According to your words, so be it.” Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet cord in the window. 22 They departed and went into the hills and remained there three days until the pursuers returned, and the pursuers searched all along the way and found nothing. 23 Then the two men returned. They came down from the hills and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun, and they told him all that had happened to them. (Jos 2:7) 24 And they said to Joshua, “Truly the Lord has given all the land into our hands. And also, all the inhabitants of the land melt away because of us.” (Ex 23:31; Jos 2:9; Jos 21:44)
