1Entonces el sumo sacerdote dijo: ¿Es esto así?2Y él declaró: Varones hermanos y padres, oíd: El Dios de la gloria apareció a nuestro padre Abraham, estando en Mesopotamia, antes que viviera en Harán,3y le dijo: Sal de tu tierra y de tu parentela, y ve a la tierra que Yo te muestre.4Saliendo entonces de la tierra de los caldeos, habitó en Harán; y de allí, luego de morir su padre, lo trasladó a esta tierra en la que vosotros vivís ahora.5Pero no le dio herencia en ella, ni aun para asentar un pie, y cuando él no tenía aún hijo, prometió dársela en posesión, y a su descendencia después de él.6Y Dios habló así: Tu descendencia será extranjera en tierra ajena por cuatrocientos años, y la esclavizarán y maltratarán.7Pero Yo juzgaré, dijo Dios, a la nación a la cual servirán como esclavos, y después de estas cosas, saldrán y me servirán en este lugar.8Y le dio el pacto de la circuncisión; y así engendró a Isaac, y lo circuncidó al octavo día; e Isaac a Jacob, y Jacob a los doce patriarcas.9Y los patriarcas, teniendo envidia de José, se deshicieron de él vendiéndolo para Egipto. Pero Dios estaba con él,10y lo libró de todas sus tribulaciones, y le dio gracia y sabiduría delante de Faraón, rey de Egipto, quien lo puso a gobernar sobre Egipto y sobre toda su casa.11Vino entonces una hambruna en todo Egipto y Canaán, y una gran aflicción; y nuestros padres no hallaban alimentos.12Pero oyendo Jacob que había alimento en Egipto, envió a nuestros padres la primera vez.13Y en la segunda, José se dio a conocer a sus hermanos, y fue manifestado a Faraón el linaje de José.14Y José envió a llamar a su padre Jacob, y a toda la familia, en número de setenta y cinco personas.15Y Jacob bajó a Egipto, y murió él, y nuestros padres.16Y fueron trasladados a Siquem y puestos en el sepulcro que Abraham había comprado por precio de plata a los hijos de Hamor en Siquem.17Pero cuando se acercaba el tiempo de la promesa que Dios había declarado a Abraham, el pueblo creció y se multiplicó en Egipto,18hasta que se levantó otro rey que no había conocido a José.19Éste, tratando con astucia a nuestro linaje, maltrató a los padres para que abandonaran a la intemperie a sus niños de pecho, para que no sobrevivieran.20En aquel tiempo nació Moisés, y fue hermoso a la vista de Dios, y fue criado por tres meses en la casa de su padre;21pero al abandonarlo a la intemperie, la hija de Faraón lo adoptó y lo crió como si fuera hijo suyo.22Y Moisés fue instruido en toda sabiduría de los egipcios, y era poderoso en sus palabras y en hechos.23Cuando tenía como cuarenta años, le vino al corazón visitar a sus hermanos, los hijos de Israel.24Y viendo a uno que era tratado injustamente, lo defendió; y matando al egipcio, vengó al maltratado.25Suponía entonces que los hermanos entenderían que Dios les daría salvación por su mano, pero ellos no entendieron.26Y al día siguiente se presentó a unos que estaban peleando, y trataba de ponerlos en paz, diciendo: Varones, sois hermanos, ¿por qué os maltratáis el uno al otro?27Entonces, el que maltrataba a su prójimo, lo rechazó, diciendo: ¿Quién te ha puesto por príncipe y juez sobre nosotros?28¿Acaso quieres tú matarme, como ayer mataste al egipcio?29Ante esta palabra, Moisés huyó, y vino a ser extranjero en la tierra de Madián, donde engendró dos hijos.30Transcurridos cuarenta años, el ángel se le apareció en el desierto del monte Sinay, en la llama de una zarza ardiente.31Al verlo entonces Moisés, se maravillaba de la visión, y al acercarse para observar, le llegó la voz del Señor:32Yo soy el Dios de tus padres, el Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Jacob. Lleno de temor, Moisés no se atrevía a mirar.33Y el Señor le dijo: Quítate las sandalias de tus pies, porque el lugar en que estás es tierra santa.34Ciertamente he visto la opresión de mi pueblo que está en Egipto, y he oído sus gemidos, y he descendido a librarlos. Ahora, pues, ven, para que te envíe a Egipto.35A este Moisés, a quien rechazaron, diciendo: ¿Quién te ha puesto por príncipe y juez? a éste envió Dios como príncipe y libertador, por mano del ángel que se le apareció en la zarza.36Éste los sacó, haciendo prodigios y señales milagrosas en tierra de Egipto, y en el mar Rojo, y en el desierto, por cuarenta años.37Éste es el Moisés que dijo a los hijos de Israel: Profeta os levantará Dios de entre vuestros hermanos, como a mí.38Éste es el que estuvo con la iglesia en el desierto, con el ángel que le hablaba en el monte Sinay, y con nuestros padres, quien recibió oráculos vivientes para dárnoslos;39al cual nuestros padres no quisieron obedecer, sino que lo rechazaron, y en sus corazones se volvieron a Egipto,40diciéndole a Aarón: ¡Haznos dioses que vayan delante de nosotros, porque este Moisés que nos sacó de tierra de Egipto, no sabemos qué le ha ocurrido!41Y en aquellos días hicieron un becerro, y ofrecieron sacrificio al ídolo, y se regocijaron en las obras de sus manos.42Pero Dios se apartó y los entregó a rendir culto al ejército del cielo, como está escrito en el libro de los profetas: ¿Acaso me ofrecisteis víctimas y sacrificios En el desierto por cuarenta años, oh casa de Israel?43Antes bien, llevasteis el tabernáculo de Moloc, Y la estrella del dios Renfán, Las imágenes que os hicisteis para adorarlas. Os transportaré, pues, más allá de Babilonia.44Tenían nuestros padres el tabernáculo del testimonio en el desierto, como había ordenado el que hablaba a Moisés para que lo hiciera conforme al modelo que había visto.45Después de recibirlo, nuestros padres a su vez lo introdujeron con Josué al tomar posesión de las naciones que Dios arrojó de la presencia de nuestros padres, hasta los días de David;46quien halló gracia delante de Dios, y pidió proveer tabernáculo para la Casa de Jacob;47pero Salomón le edificó Casa,48si bien el Altísimo no habita en casas hechas de mano; como dice el profeta:49El cielo es mi trono, Y la tierra, estrado de mis pies. ¿Qué casa me edificaréis? dice el Señor; ¿O cuál es el lugar de mi reposo?50¿No hizo mi mano todas estas cosas?51¡Duros de cerviz, e incircuncisos de corazones y de oídos! Vosotros resistís siempre al Espíritu Santo; como vuestros padres, también vosotros.52¿A cuál de los profetas no persiguieron vuestros padres? Y mataron a los que anunciaron de antemano la venida del Justo, a quien vosotros ahora habéis llegado a entregar y asesinar.53Vosotros, que recibisteis la ley por medio de los ángeles, y no la guardasteis.
Martirio de Esteban
54Al oír estas cosas, se enfurecieron en sus corazones y crujían los dientes contra él.55Pero él, lleno del Espíritu Santo, fijos los ojos en el cielo, vio la gloria de Dios, y a Jesús en pie a la diestra de Dios,56y dijo: ¡He aquí, veo los cielos abiertos y al Hijo del Hombre en pie a la diestra de Dios!57Pero ellos, gritando a gran voz, se taparon los oídos y arremetieron a una contra él,58y sacándolo fuera de la ciudad, lo apedrearon, y los testigos pusieron sus ropas a los pies de un joven llamado Saulo.59Y mientras apedreaban a Esteban, él invocaba y decía: ¡Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu!60Y puesto de rodillas, clamó a gran voz: ¡Señor, no les tomes en cuenta este pecado! And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living. (Ex 1:8)19He dealt shrewdly with our race and forced our fathers to expose their infants, so that they would not be kept alive. (Ex 1:9; Ex 1:16; Ex 1:22; Sal 105:25)20At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God’s sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father’s house, (Ex 2:2; Heb 11:23)21and when he was exposed, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son. (Ex 2:3)22And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds. (1 R 4:30; Is 19:11; Dn 1:4; Dn 1:17; Lc 24:19)23“When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel. (Ex 2:11)24And seeing one of them being wronged, he defended the oppressed man and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian.25He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand.26And on the following day he appeared to them as they were quarreling and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?’ (Ex 2:13)27But the man who was wronging his neighbor thrust him aside, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? (Lc 12:14; Hch 7:35)28Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’29At this retort Moses fled and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons. (Ex 2:15; Ex 2:22; Ex 18:3)30“Now when forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush. (Ex 3:1; Ex 3:2)31When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and as he drew near to look, there came the voice of the Lord:32‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham and of Isaac and of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and did not dare to look. (Ex 3:6)33Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. (Ex 3:5; Jos 5:15)34I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’ (Ex 2:24; Ex 3:7; Ex 3:8; Ex 3:10)35“This Moses, whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—this man God sent as both ruler and redeemer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. (Ex 3:2; Ex 14:19; Ex 23:20; Nm 20:16; Hch 7:27)36This man led them out, performing wonders and signs in Egypt and at the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years. (Ex 7:3; Ex 12:41; Ex 14:21; Ex 14:27; Ex 16:1; Ex 16:35; Ex 17:1; Ex 33:1; Nm 14:33; Sal 78:15; Sal 78:43; Sal 78:53; Sal 95:10; Sal 105:27; Sal 106:9; Hch 7:42; Hch 13:18; Heb 3:9; Heb 3:17; Heb 8:9)37This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers.’ (Dt 18:15; Hch 3:22)38This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. He received living oracles to give to us. (Ex 19:3; Ex 19:17; Dt 5:27; Dt 5:31; Dt 32:47; Dt 33:4; Is 63:9; Jn 1:17; Hch 7:53; Ro 3:2; Heb 5:12; 1 P 4:11)39Our fathers refused to obey him, but thrust him aside, and in their hearts they turned to Egypt, (Ex 16:3; Nm 11:4; Nm 14:3; Ez 20:8; Ez 20:24)40saying to Aaron, ‘Make for us gods who will go before us. As for this Moses who led us out from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ (Ex 32:1; Ex 32:23)41And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and were rejoicing in the works of their hands. (Ex 32:4; Ex 32:35; Dt 9:16; Sal 106:19; Is 2:8; Jer 1:16; Jer 25:6; Am 6:13)42But God turned away and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: “‘Did you bring to me slain beasts and sacrifices, during the forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel? (Dt 4:19; Jos 24:20; 2 R 17:16; 2 R 21:3; 2 R 23:5; Sal 81:12; Is 63:10; Jer 19:13; Ez 20:39; Am 5:25; Sof 1:5; Hch 7:36; Ro 1:28)43You took up the tent of Moloch and the star of your god Rephan, the images that you made to worship; and I will send you into exile beyond Babylon.’ (1 R 11:7)44“Our fathers had the tent of witness in the wilderness, just as he who spoke to Moses directed him to make it, according to the pattern that he had seen. (Ex 25:40; Ex 38:21; Ap 15:5)45Our fathers in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our fathers. So it was until the days of David, (Nm 32:5; Dt 32:49; Jos 3:10; Jos 3:14; Jos 23:9; Jos 24:18; 2 S 7:1; 2 Cr 20:7; Hch 13:19)46who found favor in the sight of God and asked to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.[1] (Gn 49:24; 1 S 16:1; 1 R 8:17; 1 Cr 22:7; Sal 89:19; Sal 132:5; Is 49:26; Hch 13:22)47But it was Solomon who built a house for him. (2 S 7:13; 1 R 6:1; 1 R 8:20; 2 Cr 3:1)48Yet the Most High does not dwell in houses made by hands, as the prophet says, (1 R 8:27; 2 Cr 2:6; Hch 17:24)49“‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest? (Sal 11:4; Is 66:1; Mt 5:34)50Did not my hand make all these things?’51“You stiff-necked people, uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so do you. (Ex 32:9; Lv 26:41; Dt 10:16; Jer 6:10; Jer 9:26; Ez 44:7; Ez 44:9; Mal 3:7)52Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand the coming of the Righteous One, whom you have now betrayed and murdered, (1 R 19:10; 2 Cr 36:16; Jer 2:30; Mt 5:12; Mt 21:35; Mt 23:31; Mt 23:37; Hch 3:14; Hch 5:28)53you who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it.” (Dt 33:2; Jn 7:19; Hch 7:38; Gl 3:19; Heb 2:2)
