La de Urías

1 Aconteció en la primavera del año, al tiempo que los reyes suelen salir a campaña, que David envió a Joab y con él a sus siervos y todo Israel, los cuales destruyeron a los amonitas y sitiaron a Rabá; pero David permaneció en Jerusalem. 2 Y sucedió que a la hora de la tarde, David se levantó de su lecho y se paseaba por el terrado de la casa real, y desde el terrado vio a una mujer bañándose, y la mujer era muy hermosa. 3 Y David envió a indagar acerca de la mujer, y uno dijo: ¿No es ésta Betsabé hija de Eliam, mujer de Urías heteo? 4 Y envió David mensajeros y la tomó; y cuando ella fue a él, él se acostó con ella, pues acababa de purificarse de su impureza. Después ella volvió a su casa. 5 Y la mujer concibió y mandó a informar a David, diciendo: He concebido. 6 Entonces David encargó a Joab: ¡Tráeme a Urías heteo! Así que Joab envió a Urías a David. 7 Cuando Urías llegó ante la presencia de David, éste le preguntó por la salud de Joab, por la salud de la gente y por el estado de la guerra. 8 Después dijo David a Urías: Desciende a tu casa y lava tus pies. Y saliendo Urías de la casa real, le fue enviado un presente del rey. 9 Pero Urías durmió a la entrada de la casa del rey con todos los siervos de su señor, y no bajó a su casa. 10 Cuando se lo refirieron a David, diciendo: Urías no bajó a su casa, David preguntó a Urías: ¿Acaso no has venido de un viaje? ¿Por qué no bajas a tu casa? 11 Y Urías respondió a David: El Arca, Israel y Judá permanecen en tiendas, y mi señor Joab con los siervos de mi señor acampan a campo abierto. ¿Y yo he de ir a mi casa a comer y a beber y acostarme con mi mujer? ¡Por tu vida, y por la vida de tu alma, que no haré tal cosa! 12 Y David dijo a Urías: Quédate aquí hoy también, que mañana te dejaré ir. Así pues, Urías se quedó en Jerusalem aquel día y el siguiente. 13 Después David lo mandó a llamar, y comió y bebió ante él. Y él hizo que se embriagara, pero al anochecer fue a acostarse en su cama con los siervos de su señor, y no bajó a su casa. 14 Llegada la mañana, David escribió una carta a Joab que envió por mano de Urías. 15 Y en la carta escribió diciendo: Poned a Urías al frente, en lo más recio de la batalla, y retiraos de él, para que sea herido y muera. 16 Así fue que cuando Joab asediaba la ciudad, asignó a Urías el lugar donde sabía que estaban los hombres más valientes. 17 Y los hombres de la ciudad salieron y lucharon contra Joab y cayeron algunos del pueblo, de los siervos de David, y Urías heteo también murió. 18 Y Joab hizo comunicar a David todos los sucesos de la guerra, 19 y le encomendó al mensajero, diciendo: Cuando termines de contar al rey todos los sucesos de la guerra, 20 si sucede que sube la ira del rey y te pregunta: ¿Por qué os acercasteis tanto a la ciudad para luchar? ¿Es que no sabéis lo que arrojan desde el muro? 21 ¿Quién hirió a Abimelec ben Jeroboset? ¿No fue una mujer que arrojó desde el muro un pedazo de rueda de molino, y murió en Tebes? ¿Por qué os acercasteis tanto al muro? Entonces tú responderás: También tu siervo Urías heteo ha muerto. 22 El mensajero fue pues, y llegando ante David, le declaró todo lo que Joab le había encargado. 23 Y el mensajero dijo a David: Los hombres prevalecieron contra nosotros y salieron hacia nosotros al campo, pero los acometimos hasta la entrada de la puerta. 24 Entonces los arqueros tiraron contra tus siervos desde lo alto del muro y murieron algunos de los siervos del rey, y también tu siervo Urías heteo ha muerto. 25 Y David dijo al mensajero: Así dirás a Joab: Que esto no te desagrade, porque la espada devora tanto a uno como a otro. Refuerza tu ataque contra la ciudad y destrúyela. Y tú, aliéntale. 26 Al oír la mujer de Urías que su marido Urías había muerto, hizo duelo por su señor. 27 Y cuando pasó el luto, David la hizo traer a su casa, y ella fue su mujer y le dio un hijo. Pero lo que David había hecho fue desagradable ante los ojos de YHVH.

David and Bathsheba

1 In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel. And they ravaged the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. (Dt 3:11; 2 S 12:26; 1 R 20:22; 1 R 20:26; 1 Cr 20:1; 2 Cr 36:10)

2 It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. (1 S 9:25) 3 And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, “Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” (2 S 23:39; 1 Cr 3:5) 4 So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. (Lv 15:19; Lv 15:28; Lv 18:19) 5 And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.” 6 So David sent word to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. 7 When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab was doing and how the people were doing and how the war was going. 8 Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house and wash your feet.” And Uriah went out of the king’s house, and there followed him a present from the king. (Gn 18:4) 9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. 10 When they told David, “Uriah did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “Have you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?” 11 Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in booths, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field. 12 Then David said to Uriah, “Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. 13 And David invited him, and he ate in his presence and drank, so that he made him drunk. And in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house. (Gn 19:33; Gn 19:35; 2 S 11:11) 14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. (1 R 21:8) 15 In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down, and die.” (2 S 12:9) 16 And as Joab was besieging the city, he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew there were valiant men. 17 And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab, and some of the servants of David among the people fell. Uriah the Hittite also died. 18 Then Joab sent and told David all the news about the fighting. 19 And he instructed the messenger, “When you have finished telling all the news about the fighting to the king, 20 then, if the king’s anger rises, and if he says to you, ‘Why did you go so near the city to fight? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall? 21 Who killed Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?’ then you shall say, ‘Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.’” (Jue 9:53) 22 So the messenger went and came and told David all that Joab had sent him to tell. 23 The messenger said to David, “The men gained an advantage over us and came out against us in the field, but we drove them back to the entrance of the gate. 24 Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall. Some of the king’s servants are dead, and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.” 25 David said to the messenger, “Thus shall you say to Joab, ‘Do not let this matter displease you, for the sword devours now one and now another. Strengthen your attack against the city and overthrow it.’ And encourage him.” 26 When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she lamented over her husband. 27 And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord. (2 S 12:9)
