1När Jesus hade gett sina tolv närmaste efterföljare dessa föreskrifter, gick han vidare för att undervisa och sprida sitt budskap i städerna i Galileen.2Johannes döparen, som just hade blivit satt i fängelse, fick höra om alla de under som Jesus Kristus[1] gjorde. Han skickade därför iväg några av sina efterföljare till Jesus för att fråga honom:3”Är du verkligen den som Gud har lovat sända oss, eller ska vi vänta på någon annan?”4Jesus svarade dem: ”Gå tillbaka till Johannes och berätta för honom vad ni har hört och sett:5att blinda börjar se, förlamade går, spetälska blir friska, döva hör, döda får liv igen, och de fattiga får höra ett glatt budskap.[2]6Säg sedan till honom: ’Lycklig är den som inte tvivlar på mig.’ ”7När Johannes efterföljare hade gått, började Jesus tala till folket om Johannes. Han sa: ”När ni gick ut till honom i ödemarken, vad ville ni då se? Ville ni se en svag man, lik ett grässtrå som vajar hit och dit för vinden?8Självklart inte! Ville ni se en man klädd i vackra kläder? Nej, då hade det varit bättre om ni gått till ett kungligt palats.9Ville ni kanske se en profet som framförde Guds budskap? Ja, jag säger er att Johannes är mer än en profet.10Han är den som Gud talar om i Skriften[3] när han säger: ’Lyssna! Jag sänder min budbärare före dig, och han ska bereda vägen för dig.’11Jag försäkrar er, att Johannes döparen har betytt mer än någon annan människa som har trätt fram offentligt. Ändå kommer den minst betydelsefulla bland dem som får vara Guds eget folk[4] att betyda mer än vad Johannes gjorde här på jorden.12Ända sedan den dag då Johannes döparen började tala till folket och fram till nu, har Gud med kraft börjat regera bland människorna,[5] även om det finns de som vill få det att ske med våld.13Att Gud skulle regera på jorden, var förutsagt av honom genom Moses lag och profeterna[6] redan innan Johannes började sin uppgift.14Och vare sig ni tror det eller inte, så är Johannes den som Gud talade om när han sa att Elia[7] skulle komma .15Lyssna noga och försök att förstå!16Vad ska jag säga om detta släkte som inte vill tro? De är som barn som leker på torget och ropar till de andra barnen:17’Vi spelade bröllopsmusik för er, men ni ville inte dansa. Vi spelade begravningsmusik för er, men ni ville inte sörja.’18Exakt så reagerar man när det gäller Johannes döparen och mig. Johannes dricker inte vin och går ofta utan mat, och då säger man: ’Han är besatt av en ond ande.’19Men jag, Människosonen[8], äter och dricker, och då beskyller man mig för att frossa i mat och dryck och leva tillsammans med de värsta syndare! Men till slut kommer Gud i sin vishet ändå att få rätt, när man ser resultatet av hans vishet.”
Jesus anklagar galileiska städer
20Sedan började Jesus anklaga människorna i de städer där han hade gjort de flesta av sina under, eftersom de inte hade vänt om till Gud. Han sa:21”Hur fruktansvärt kommer det inte att bli för er som bor i Korasin och Betsaida! För om de under jag gjorde hos er hade gjorts i Tyros och Sidon[9], hade människorna där ångrat sin synd och vänt om till Gud för länge sedan.22Jag försäkrar er, att på domens dag ska både Tyros och Sidon få ett lindrigare straff än ni!23Och ni, Kafarnaums invånare, tror ni att ni ska bli upphöjda till himlen? Nej, ner till helvetet ska ni störtas . För om de fantastiska under jag gjorde hos er hade utförts i Sodom[10], skulle den staden ha funnits kvar än idag.24Jag kan försäkra er, att Sodom ska slippa lindrigare undan på domens dag än ni!”
Jesus utlovar ro och vila
25Efter det bad Jesus den här bönen: ”Jag tackar dig Far, du som är Herre över himlen och jorden, för att du gömmer sanningen för dem som tror sig vara lärda och kloka, men visar den för dem som är som barn.26Ja, Far, så har du bestämt.”27Jesus fortsatte: ”Min Far har överlämnat allt åt mig. Ingen känner Sonen, utom Fadern, och ingen känner Fadern, utom Sonen och de människor som Sonen vill visa honom för.28Kom till mig alla ni som är trötta och kämpar med problem och tunga bördor, så ska jag ge er vila.29Gå in under mina villkor och låt mig undervisa er! Jag är mild och ödmjuk. Hos mig finner ni ro för era själar. Jag lägger inga tunga bördor på er.”
1När Jesus hade gett sina tolv lärjungar dessa föreskrifter, gick han vidare för att undervisa och förkunna i städerna i Galileen.2Johannes döparen, som satt i fängelse, fick höra om Kristus gärningar och skickade därför iväg några av sina lärjungar3för att fråga honom: ”Är du den som ska komma, eller ska vi vänta på någon annan?”4Jesus svarade dem: ”Gå tillbaka till Johannes och berätta för honom vad ni har hört och sett:5att blinda börjar se, förlamade går, spetälska blir rena, döva hör, döda uppstår, och de fattiga får höra evangeliet.[1]6Lycklig är den som inte kommer på fall för min skull.”7När Johannes lärjungar hade gått, började Jesus tala till folket om Johannes. Han sa: ”När ni gick ut i ödemarken, vad ville ni då se? Ett grässtrå som vajar för vinden?8Eller vad gick ni ut för att se? En man klädd i fina kläder? Nej, män som går omkring i dyrbara kläder finns i kungapalatsen.9Vad gick ni ut för att se? En profet? Ja, jag säger er: han är mer än en profet.10Han är den som det står skrivet om: ’Se! Jag ska sända min budbärare före dig, och han ska bereda vägen för dig.’[2]11Sannerligen säger jag er: ingen av kvinna född har trätt fram som är större än Johannes döparen. Ändå är den minsta i himmelriket större än han.12Ända sedan Johannes döparens tid och fram tills nu har himmelriket trängt fram, och det finns de som vill få det att ske med våld[3].13Lagen och profeterna har profeterat fram till Johannes.14Och vare sig ni tror det eller inte, så är han Elia[4] som skulle komma[5].15Lyssna, hör, den som har öron!16Vad ska jag jämföra detta släkte med? De är som barn som leker på torget och ropar till de andra barnen:17’Vi spelade flöjt för er, men ni ville inte dansa. Vi sjöng klagosång för er, men ni ville inte sörja.’18Johannes döparen kom och går ofta utan mat och dricker inte vin, och då säger man: ’Han är besatt av en ond ande.’19Men Människosonen har kommit och äter och dricker, och då säger folk: ’Se vilken frossare och drinkare, en vän till tullindrivare och syndare! Men vishetens gärningar ger ändå visheten rätt.[6]’ ”
Jesus anklagar galileiska städer
20Sedan började Jesus anklaga människorna i de städer där han hade gjort de flesta av sina under, eftersom de inte hade omvänt sig. Han sa:21”Ve dig, Korasin, och ve dig, Betsaida! För om de under som gjorts hos er hade gjorts i Tyros och Sidon[7], hade de för länge sedan omvänt sig i säck och aska.22Men jag säger er, att på domens dag ska både Tyros och Sidon få det lindrigare än ni.23Och du, Kafarnaum, du ska väl inte bli upphöjt till himlen? Nej, ner till dödsriket ska du störtas. För om de under som gjorts hos dig hade utförts i Sodom[8], skulle den staden ha funnits kvar än idag.24Jag kan försäkra er, att Sodom ska slippa lindrigare undan på domens dag än du!”
Jesus utlovar ro och vila
25Vid den tiden sa Jesus: ”Jag prisar dig, Fader, du som är Herre över himlen och jorden, för att du har dolt detta för de lärda och kloka, men visat det för dem som är som barn.26Ja, Fader, så har du bestämt.27Min fader har överlämnat allt åt mig. Ingen känner Sonen, utom Fadern, och ingen känner Fadern, utom Sonen och de som Sonen vill uppenbara honom för.28Kom till mig alla ni som är trötta och bär tunga bördor, så ska jag ge er vila.29Gå in under mitt ok och lär av mig. Jag är mild och ödmjuk i hjärtat. Hos mig finner ni ro för era själar.30Mitt ok är behagligt och min börda är lätt.”
1After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.[1]2When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples3to ask him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’4Jesus replied, ‘Go back and report to John what you hear and see:5the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy[2] are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.6Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.’7As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind?8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces.9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.10This is the one about whom it is written: ‘ “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.” (Mal 3:1)11Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.12From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[3] and violent people have been raiding it.13For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John.14And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.15Whoever has ears, let them hear.16‘To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the market-places and calling out to others:17‘ “We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.”18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, “He has a demon.”19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, “Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.’
Woe on unrepentant towns
20Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent.21‘Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.22But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.23And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[4] For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.24But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.’
The Father revealed in the Son
25At that time Jesus said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.26Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.27‘All things have been committed to me by my Father. No-one knows the Son except the Father, and no-one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.28‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.29Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.30For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.’
1Jesus finished teaching his 12 disciples. Then he went on to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee.2John the Baptist was in prison. When he heard about the actions of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to him.3They asked Jesus, ‘Are you the one who is supposed to come? Or should we look for someone else?’4Jesus replied, ‘Go back to John. Report to him what you hear and see.5Blind people receive sight. Disabled people walk. Those who have skin diseases are made “clean”. Deaf people hear. Those who are dead are raised to life. And the good news is preached to those who are poor.6Blessed is anyone who does not give up their faith because of me.’7As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John. He said, ‘What did you go out into the desert to see? Tall grass waving in the wind?8If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No. People who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces.9Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.10He is the one written about in Scripture. It says, ‘ “I will send my messenger ahead of you. He will prepare your way for you.” (Mal 3:1)11What I’m about to tell you is true. No one more important than John the Baptist has ever been born. But the least important person in the kingdom of heaven is more important than he is.12Since the days of John the Baptist, the kingdom of heaven has been under attack. And violent people are taking hold of it.13All the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John came.14If you are willing to accept it, John is the Elijah who was supposed to come.15Whoever has ears should listen.16‘What can I compare today’s people to? They are like children sitting in the markets and calling out to others. They say,17‘ “We played the flute for you. But you didn’t dance. We sang a funeral song. But you didn’t become sad.”18When John came, he didn’t eat or drink as you do. And people say, “He has a demon.”19But when the Son of Man came, he ate and drank as you do. And people say, “This fellow is always eating and drinking far too much. He’s a friend of tax collectors and ‘sinners’. ” By wise actions wisdom is shown to be right.’
Towns that do not turn away from sin
20Jesus began to speak against the towns where he had done most of his miracles. The people there had not turned away from their sins. So he said,21‘How terrible it will be for you, Chorazin! How terrible for you, Bethsaida! Suppose the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon. They would have turned away from their sins long ago. They would have put on clothes for mourning. They would have sat down in ashes.22But I tell you this. On judgment day it will be easier for Tyre and Sidon than for you.23And what about you, Capernaum? Will you be lifted to the heavens? No! You will go down to the place of the dead. Suppose the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom. It would still be here today.24But I tell you this. On judgment day it will be easier for Sodom than for you.’
Rest for all who are tired
25At that time Jesus said, ‘I praise you, Father. You are Lord of heaven and earth. You have hidden these things from wise and educated people. But you have shown them to little children.26Yes, Father. This is what you wanted to do.27‘My Father has given all things to me. The Father is the only one who knows the Son. And the only ones who know the Father are the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to make him known.28‘Come to me, all you who are tired and are carrying heavy loads. I will give you rest.29Become my servants and learn from me. I am gentle and free of pride. You will find rest for your souls.30Serving me is easy, and my load is light.’
