1Kom til fornuft, I frafaldne folk,2før I blæses væk som avner i vinden, før I rammes af Herrens vrede, før den afsagte dom bliver udført.3Søg Herren, alle I, som er ydmyge og oprigtigt ønsker at adlyde ham. Ydmyg jer for Herren og gør, hvad der er ret. Måske vil Herren skåne jer på dommens dag.
Dommen over de omkringboende folkeslag
4Gaza bliver tømt for mennesker, og Ashkalon bliver lagt øde. Ashdods befolkning drives bort ved højlys dag, og Ekron rykkes op med rode.5Alle I filistre, som bor langs kysten mod syd,[1] ja, alle I, der bor i Kana’ans land, det er ude med jer, for Herrens dom vil ramme jer. Han siger: „Jeg vil udrydde jer, og ikke en eneste skal overleve!” (1.Sam 30,14; Ez 25,16)6Kystlandet bliver til græsmarker, et sted, hvor hyrder og får holder til.7Dér vil resten af Judas stamme slå sig ned og lade deres dyr græsse. De vil lægge sig til hvile i Ashkalons forladte huse, for Herren deres Gud vil tage sig af dem og velsigne dem igen.8-9Herren, den Almægtige, Israels Gud, siger: „Jeg har hørt moabitternes hån og ammonitternes spot. De har hånet mit folk og truet med at overfalde dem. Derfor, så sandt jeg lever, skal Moab blive ødelagt som Sodoma, og Ammon skal blive som Gomorra. De skal overgros med brændenælder, fyldes med saltgruber, og ligge øde hen for evigt. Herren vil ødelægge Assyrien og gøre Nineve til en ruinhob, ubeboelig som en ørken.14Byen ender som græsgang for får og tilholdssted for alle mulige dyr. Hornugler og natugler vil sidde og sove på søjlehovederne, krager vil skrige fra vinduesåbninger og dørtærskler. De fornemme cedertræspaneler udsættes for vejr og vind.15Sådan bliver Nineves skæbne, den før så stolte og prægtige by. Den var sikker på sig selv og følte sig som verdens centrum. Men nu er den blevet en ruinhob, et tilholdssted for vilde dyr. De forbipasserende vil fnyse i foragt, ryste på hovedet med undrende afsky.
