1 Vzácnější jest jméno dobré než bohatství veliké, a přízeň lepší než stříbro a zlato. 2 Bohatý a chudý potkávají se, učinitel obou jest Hospodin. 3 Opatrný vida zlé, vyhne se, ale hloupí předce jdouce, těžkosti docházejí. 4 Pokory a bázně Hospodinovy odplata jest bohatství a sláva i život. 5 Trní a osídla jsou na cestě převráceného; kdož ostříhá duše své, vzdálí se od nich. 6 Vyučuj mladého podlé způsobu cesty jeho; nebo když se i zstará, neuchýlí se od ní. 7 Bohatý nad chudými panuje, a vypůjčující bývá služebníkem toho, jenž půjčuje. 8 Kdo rozsívá nepravost, žíti bude trápení; prut zajisté prchlivosti jeho přestane. 9 Oko dobrotivé, onoť požehnáno bude; nebo udílí z chleba svého chudému. 10 Vyvrz posměvače, a odejdeť svada, anobrž přestane svár a lehkost. 11 Kdo miluje čistotu srdce, a v čích rtech jest příjemnost, takového král přítelem bývá. 12 Oči Hospodinovy ostříhají umění, ale snažnosti ošemetného převrací. 13 Říká lenoch: Lev jest vně, naprostřed ulic byl bych zabit. 14 Jáma hluboká ústa postranních; ten, na kohož se hněvá Hospodin, vpadne tam. 15 Bláznovství přivázáno jest k srdci mladého, ale metla kázně vzdálí je od něho. 16 Kdo utiská nuzného, aby rozmnožil své, a dává bohatému, jistotně bude v nouzi. 17 Nakloň ucha svého, a slyš slova moudrých, a mysl svou přilož k učení mému. 18 Nebo to bude utěšenou věcí, jestliže je složíš v srdci svém, budou-li spolu nastrojena ve rtech tvých. 19 Aby bylo v Hospodinu doufání tvé, oznamujiť to dnes. I ty také ostříhej toho. 20 Zdaližť jsem nenapsal znamenitých věcí z strany rad a umění, 21 Aťbych v známost uvedl jistotu řečí pravých, tak abys vynášeti mohl slova pravdy těm, kteříž by k tobě poslali? 22 Nelup nuzného, proto že nuzný jest, aniž potírej chudého v bráně. 23 Nebo Hospodin povede při jejich, a vydře duši těm, kteříž vydírají jim. 24 Nebývej přítelem hněvivého, a s mužem prchlivým neobcuj, 25 Abys se nenaučil stezkám jeho, a nevložil osídla na duši svou. 26 Nebývej mezi rukojměmi, mezi slibujícími za dluhy. 27 Nemáš-li, čím bys zaplatil, proč má kdo bráti lůže tvé pod tebou? 28 Nepřenášej mezníku starodávního, kterýž učinili otcové tvoji. 29 Vídáš-li, že muž snažný v díle svém před králi stává? Nestává před nepatrnými.

Na náměstí by mě zadávil.“ 14 Ústa cizaček jsou hluboká jáma; na koho se Hospodin rozhněvá, ten tam spadne. 15 Vězí-li v srdci chlapce pošetilost, trestající hůl ji od něho vzdálí. 16 Kdo utiskuje nuzného, aby mu přibylo, nebo kdo dává bohatému, bude mít nedostatek.

17 Nakloň své ucho a slyš slova moudrých, zaměř srdce k tomu, co jsem poznal. 18 Bude ti k blahu, budeš-li je ve svém nitru zachovávat, budou rovněž pohotově na tvých rtech. 19 Abys na Hospodina spoléhal, poučím tě dnes – ano, tebe. 20 Zdali jsem ti již dříve nenapsal rady a poznání, 21 abych tě poučil o spolehlivé jistotě slov pravdy, abys mohl pravdivě odpovědět tomu, kdo tě poslal? 22 Neodírej nuzného, vždyť nic nemá, po utištěném nešlapej v bráně. 23 Neboť jejich spor povede Hospodin, uchvátí život jejich uchvatitelům. 24 Nepřátel se s hněvivým člověkem a s mužem vznětlivým se nestýkej, 25 ať se nepřizpůsobíš jeho stezkám a nenastražíš léčku své duši. 26 Nebuď mezi těmi, kdo dají druhému ruku, kdo se zaručují za půjčku, 27 nemáš-li čím splatit; proč ti má někdo vzít pod tebou lůžko? 28 Nepřenášej dávné mezníky, které zasadili tvoji otcové. 29 Viděls muže, který je zběhlý v svém díle? Před králi bude stávat; nebude stávat před bezvýznamnými.

17 Nakloň své ucho a slova mudrců slyš, své srdce věnuj mému vědění. 18 Příhodné bude, když zachováš je v nitru, budou-li pohotově vždy na tvých rtech. 19 Dnes právě tebe mám v úmyslu učit, abys na Hospodina pevně spoléhal. 20 Třicatero rad jsem pro tebe sepsal – je v nich poučení a vědění, 21 abys poznal výroky spolehlivé pravdy a předával ji těm, kdo na ni čekají: 22 Neodírej chudáka – je přece chudák; u soudu neutlačuj ubohé. 23 Sám Hospodin se jejich pře ujme a vydře duši těm, kdo vydírají je! 24 Neměj za přítele vznětlivého muže, se vzteklým člověkem se nespolčuj, 25 jinak se přiučíš jeho zvykům, do pasti uvrhneš duši svou. 26 Nepatři k těm, kdo se upisují, nezaručuj se za půjčky. 27 Proč bys měl přijít i o vlastní lůžko, až nebudeš mít čím zaplatit? 28 Neposunuj dávné mezníky, které tví otcové vztyčili. 29 Hleď – kdo je mistrem svého díla, v královských službách octne se; nepatrným lidem sloužit nebude.
